Web Affinity: A Study Of Undergraduate Students In Nigerian Universities, Obuh Alex Ozoemelem

The study focused on undergraduates in Nigerian universities. Three hundred students, 100 each from the three universities, were sampled using simple random sampling methods. The analysis of the data reveals a low level of ICT skill and web experience among the students. Nevertheless, there is a high level of Web use that cuts across genders. E-mail, research, and e-payments were the major reasons for Web use.

The study investigated the availability and use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in six university -based library schools in Nigeria. Survey research methodology was adopted, and two sets of questionnaires were administered to the directors and 65 academic staff of the six library schools. Findings indicate that all six schools studied have a fair number of IT applications for education and training of students but that more is needed.

Information sharing, dissemination, digital libraries, and repositories are not new concepts. Open Access Initiatives make digital information more accessible to users. Access management is an important issue which illustrates the process of providing controlled, secure access to online resources which involves both authentication and authorization. Online security is one of the key services for the network infrastructure of digital repositories. Confidentiality and integrity of information cannot be ensured without a proper access management mechanism. This paper reviews available informatin on user authentications and authorization, and the authentication of digital materials is illustrated.

Information resource management supports information management, which is managing the ownership, content, quality, and use of information.The research reported on in this article aimed to know how information systems are supported for small scale industries, represented here by the tapioca industry. Survey and focus group research on a sample of female undergraduates at the University of Ibadan sought information on their use of information on contraception. Results showed that female undergraduates receive information on contraception regularly through the broadcast media and friends; however, they have only partial knowledge, because of twelve method of contraception, they are generally familiar with only three, particularly condoms. This paper reports on the study instituted to determine the sources of legal information and means used to access legal information by Lawyers in Uganda and propose strategic interventions. This paper examines ICT applications in Nigerian secondary schools. It reveals that ICTs should be adopted in Nigerian schools to improve the educational system and help the students receive a solid education, enabling them to live successfully. Though some efforts have been made to ensure the integration of ICTs in the system, the level of ICT adoption and use is low, due to poor policy/project implementation strategies, and limited/poor information infrastructure. Recommendations for improvement of ICT applications are set forth.

Despite the efforts to check the spread of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria, deaths and new infections are recorded daily. The government has formed the National Action Committee on AIDS (NACA), the State Action Committee on AIDS (SACA), and the Local Action Committee on AIDS (LACA), to create awareness through rural extension services. The factors such as Library Automation (LA), Network Infrastructure (NI), Computer Infrastructure (CI), Electronic Resources (ER), and Manpower (MA) are compared to Networked Services (NS) offered by the NIT libraries. The study investigates the provision and use of legal information among civil rights groups in oil producing communities of Nigeria. The survey research design was employed for this study. Data was gathered by questionnaire from 127 active civil rights group members spread across ten oil producing communities in three major oil producing states of Nigeria – Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers. This study is a survey of access to health information by people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in Nigeria. A questionnaire was used to collect data from 120 respondents. The data obtained were analysed using simple percentages. The study reveals that libraries are not used as sources of health information by PLWHA. The study recommends that libraries should repackage information for PLWHA, educate users, and organise awareness/outreach services in collaboration with NGOs on the subject of HIV/AIDS.

This study examined awareness and accessibility of environmental information in Nigeria with specific reference to Warri Central Local Government Area of Delta state. The paper presents the results of a survey of library and information science professionals working in various institutions in Pakistan. Their access to and use of the Internet were measured. Their attitude towards Internet and relationship of the attitude with some personal and Internet use related variables were also explored. The findings reveal that the participants’ attitude was very positive towards Internet based facilities and services. They found these tools very useful in their professional and personal work.
