From Library To Knowledge Center: Building A Website To Introduce A New Building To The Community, Araby Greene
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
When announced in March 2004, the biggest gift in the University of Nevada 's history was in support of a new library building, to be called “The Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center.” The decision to call the new facility a “Knowledge Center” deliberately calls attention to the expanded role of the institution. This article describes the design and development of a website to tell users about the role and progress of the Knowledge Center, allay fears about books disappearing forever into the great maw of the Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS), encourage feedback, and create some excitement about a beautiful new …

Philosophical Views About Digital Information And Relational Schemata, Markos Dendrinos
Philosophical Views About Digital Information And Relational Schemata, Markos Dendrinos
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The nature and organization of digital information are examined from a philosophical point of view. A Platonic model is first suggested, based on both the Platonic allegory of the two worlds and the hypothesis of the informationised universe. Ancient classification schemata are presented in terms of the relationship types involved, concluding with an attempt to view the semantically rich web management system as an extended Platonic model.
Information Access Post September 11: What Librarians Need To Know, Laura Taddeo
Information Access Post September 11: What Librarians Need To Know, Laura Taddeo
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The tragedy of September 11, 2001 has forced both the American people and the government to reevaluate how information is collected and disseminated. Part of the White House's response to September 11 includes protecting "sensitive information from inappropriate disclosure," and encouraging federal agencies to review whether certain information, formerly readily accessible, should be removed from the American public’s view. The ability to control the way information is made available to the public has changed, especially during the Digital Age. The Internet, like the radio during World War II, is one of the most powerful tools used to relay information to …

Bicycle Access To Public Libraries: A Survey Of Pennsylvania Public Libraries And Their Accessibility To Patrons Arriving Via Bicycle, Samantha Hypatia Thompson
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
In 1994, the US Department of Transportation set the goal of doubling the number of bicycle trips undertaken in this country. Impediments to this goal are trip and destination barriers. One major public destination intended for universal access is the public library. This is relevant to young adults, the poor, and recent immigrants, all of whom may choose bicycle transportation at higher rates than the general population. A survey of 225 public libraries in Pennsylvania found that 54% of respondent libraries had poor overall bicycle accessibility. These overall levels were the result of the trip or destination barriers at each …

Resource Sharing In The Digital Age: Prospects And Problems In African Universities, Felicia Etim
Resource Sharing In The Digital Age: Prospects And Problems In African Universities, Felicia Etim
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Africa’s universities and research centers have a unique role to play in knowledge production and dissemination as drivers of knowledge-based development. To this end, they need to be locally established and socially connected in order to draw fully from the society while feeding back the products of knowledge. Problems identified are the high cost of Internet access, partial realization of campus networks in the universities, ineffective configuration of platforms and the lack of reliable and permanent source of power. Regulatory bodies have been set up for the organization and production of contents which will serve for development support, and the …

Information Society: European Considerations In Economic And Cultural Contexts, George Adam Holland
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The phrase "information society" is used across many disciplines, yet consensus on its meaning and significance is lacking. This paper explores possible meanings, with particular emphasis on economic and cultural factors. Frank Webster and Manuel Castells inform the discussion through their theoretical and empirical research on the topic. The European engagement development of information societies is analyzed with particular emphasis on Finland. Following this economic and cultural exploration of the information society, methodological implications are identified for research into information societies and consideration for information professionals.
On Not Revising The Ala Code Of Ethics: An Alternate Proposal, John Buschman
On Not Revising The Ala Code Of Ethics: An Alternate Proposal, John Buschman
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The American Library Association (ALA) is undertaking a revision of its code of ethics. The author propo ses and discusses three reasons not to revise the code. The reasons are that there is already a set of interlocking policies on ethics and related issues; that ALA leadership has taken the most conservative possible approach to ethics policy - and especially the connection between librarians' professional responsibilities and rights; and that when policies are amended, they are not always improved, and those on the books are often ignored. The author considers and discusses likely objections to his proposal.

Alternative Models Of Knowledge Production: A Step Forward In Information Literacy As A Liberal Art, Shilpa Shanbhag
Alternative Models Of Knowledge Production: A Step Forward In Information Literacy As A Liberal Art, Shilpa Shanbhag
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Information literacy is embedded within the traditional disciplinary model of knowledge production wherein the role of the scholar/expert and the process of peer-review are emphasized. Exclusive reference to this model is inadequate in informing the production of knowledge outside of formal academic setting and consequently inadequate in supporting the objectives of liberal learning. Shapiro and Hughes' concept of information literacy as a liberal art provides a useful framework for discussion on alternative models of knowledge production.

Do You Really Want To Be A Forum?, Leonard Hitchcock
Do You Really Want To Be A Forum?, Leonard Hitchcock
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This article examines what a public forum is, and whether or not a library can legitimately claim to be one. Beginning with an imaginary visit to a rather odd public park, and a brief review of the development of the legal doctrine of the public forum, an attempt is made to establish that the library 1) falls far short of being a genuine public forum, 2) is actually ambivalent about being a forum at all, and 3) could, if it really wanted to, become much more of a forum by making a very simple change in its online catalog.
Information As A Value Concept, Thomas Weissinger
Information As A Value Concept, Thomas Weissinger
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Philosophically, materialists and idealists understand the world differently. In materialist theory information directly represents the natural world, whereas idealism understands it to be the very structure of thought. Some of the problems arising between information theory and the actual practice of librarianship are due to mixing concepts from incompatible theories. The concept of information favored by materialist theories is not interchangeable with the concepts preferred by idealists and critical theorists. Materialism overemphasizes the empirical features of information, while giving short shrift to the possibility that information can be both factual and evaluative. Consequently, this leads to theories of information which …
Empowering The Intentional Learner: A Critical Theory For Information Literacy Instruction, John J. Doherty, Kevin Ketchner
Empowering The Intentional Learner: A Critical Theory For Information Literacy Instruction, John J. Doherty, Kevin Ketchner
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The empowered intentional learner is a starting point towards a grounded theory in information literacy instruction. The authors engage this theory in a critical dialogue with instructional practice, in this instance a for-credit college freshman class built around information literacy concepts. Only through such reflection, where theory informs practice and practice informs theory, is it possible to develop a grounded theory where a less privileged role for the instruction librarian takes a back seat role to the control students should have over their own learning.
