Enough, Michelle K. Bourgeois
Enough, Michelle K. Bourgeois
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This collection of short stories follows the themes of trauma and the feeling of not being enough for yourself or others. This includes the pressures we put on ourselves to keep trying to be “right” or what we’re “supposed to be”. The idea is apparent that reaching out instead of self- isolating benefits the characters. What also connects these works is a hint of Southern flair, family, and humor. An irreverent voice connects the work and most of the characters. The inclusion of humor to get through suffering and as a way to talk about tough subjects is a concurrent …
The Impact Of Forced Displacement On Social Capital In Texas, Shannon Strother, Shannon Strother
The Impact Of Forced Displacement On Social Capital In Texas, Shannon Strother, Shannon Strother
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In 2018, over 28 million persons were newly displaced globally, of which 1.2 million reside in the United States alone. Natural disasters, conflict and violence leads to forced displacement on a global scale. This displacement leads to increased vulnerabilities in terms of financial, human and social capital. To date, there has been extensive research on the impact relocation has had on the social capital of refugees and other migrant groups. However, there remains a significant gap in scholarship on the impact of forced, internal displacement has on an individual’s social capital.
The goal of the work is to contribute to …

Zaitzart Bat: Pete Cenarrusa, Culture, Politics, And The Creation Of A Basque-American Community From The 1930s To The 2000s, Christine M. Tarride, Christine M. Tarride
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines how Basque-American communities from the 1930s to the 2000s, responding in part to external threats and accusations of treason, communism, or terrorism, and have come to be identified more with cultural practice over homeland politics. This can be seen through the career and legacy of Pete Cenarrusa (1917-2013), a longtime Idaho politician of Basque descent. Cenarrusa’s early life and career were dedicated to Basque nationalist politics, but his primary legacy is that of a cultural preserver, who helped to further develop the Western United States’ Basque community’s cultural focus, as expressed through festivals, physical sites and community-based …

Low Impact Development Mitigation For Base Flood Elevation Disparity Between Adjacent Properties, Shaelynn Moore
Low Impact Development Mitigation For Base Flood Elevation Disparity Between Adjacent Properties, Shaelynn Moore
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Disputes between adjacent property owners in which new development at higher elevation requirements has caused adverse effects in stormwater drainage towards lower, older developments has recently grown in concern. The difference of elevations between properties causes a faster sheet flow effect that bypasses existing drainage paths in the servitude. The goal of this research is to design a low impact development methodology that encourages detention and redirection back toward the shared drainage boundary. Detention is encouraged through subsurface infiltration, storage and re-direction of the flow path. Infiltration trench simulations using EPA’s SWMM software were used to mirror the new LID …

Numerical Study On Oscillating Flow Over A Flat Plate Using Pseudo-Compressibility In Intermittent Turbulent Regime, Shivank Srivastava Mr.
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
A Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) in-house code is developed to study unsteady characteristics of incompressible oscillating boundary layer flow over a flat plate under laminar and intermittently turbulent condition using pseudo-compressible unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier- Stokes (RANS) model. In the in-house code, the two-dimensional, unsteady conservation of mass and momentum equations are discretized using finite difference techniques which employs second order accurate (based on Taylor series) central differencing for spatial derivatives and second order Runge-Kutta accurate differencing for temporal derivatives. The in-house code employs Fully Explicit-Finite Difference technique (FEFD) to solve the governing differential equations of the mathematical model. In …
The Synthesis Of Heterogeneous Catalysts: Transition Metal Nanoparticles Encapsulated In Halloysite And Applications In Organic Transformations, Jumanah Hamdi
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The natural scrolled clay, halloysite, was studied as a catalyst and solid support for the development of encapsulated transition metal nanoparticles (M@Hal). With the unique tubular nanostructure, raw halloysite exhibited remarkable chemical reactivity superior to other clays in the esterification of biomass-derived carboxylic acids. Raw halloysite was also effective in the esterification of various aromatic and non-aromatic carboxylic acids. These results indicated that halloysite has the potential utility as a “Green” heterogeneous catalyst for a broad scope of esterification applications. A novel Pd@Hal nanocomposite was synthesized under ambient conditions. The newly prepared catalyst was applied to the widely used Suzuki-Miyaura …

Gender Inequality And Terrorism: The Impacts Of Female Empowerment On Domestic And Transnational Terrorism, Jennifer Dumas
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In the post-9/11 years, terrorism has emerged as an urgent issue with important national security and foreign policy ramifications. Within political science, terrorism research has likewise developed as a burgeoning subfield with the potential for significant contributions to policymaking worldwide. However, the literature has until recently generally neglected gender inequality as a structural antecedent to terrorism, despite studies which support a relationship between gender parity and conflict mitigation in other areas as well as increasing calls for the integration of gender measures into counterterrorism agendas and initiatives among scholars and policymakers. To address this gap in the literature, I introduce …

Into The Depths Of Economic Extraction: Louisiana Lumber’S Rise And Fall, John C. Creed Jr
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Throughout Louisiana’s history, from the Louisiana Purchase to present day, the state has well benefited from its economic location. From the Port of New Orleans to Union Pacific railyard, all along the state, Louisiana has possessed its natural resources of the lumber commerce. Beginning in the 1880s to a peak in the 1910s, Louisiana represented a state-wide economic development. This paper argues that Louisiana advancement post-Reconstruction and into this new period of newly commercialized railroad systems made the biggest economic impact on Southwestern Louisiana with one essential economic, lumber. From 1880 to 1925, the lumber industry in Vernon Parish, Louisiana, …

Atypical Structural Neuroconnectivity Associated With Emotional Face Processing And Clinical Affect In Children With Chromosome 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome, David Dodd Stephenson Jr
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SCZ) is a debilitating psychiatric disorder that affects approximately 1% of the general population. The etiopathology of this disorder is not fully understood with genetic and environmental factors underpinning vulnerability and disease progression. Children with chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) are at ultra-high risk for developing SCZ with 30% developing the disorder in adolescence or young adulthood. To investigate associations with psychosis vulnerability, much work has been performed looking at neurological underpinnings between schizophrenia and 22q11.2DS to assess similarities between both genetic and idiopathic forms of schizophrenia in adults. However, many past studies have assessed this using …

Investigation Of Two-Phase Flow Phenomena In Rotating Paper Dryer To Achieve Effective Heat Transfer With Low Energy Consumption, Hamed Abdul Majeed
Investigation Of Two-Phase Flow Phenomena In Rotating Paper Dryer To Achieve Effective Heat Transfer With Low Energy Consumption, Hamed Abdul Majeed
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The paper industry provides important consumer products comprised of paper, tissue, paper board, and pulping. The papermaking process requires a lot of energy, in the form of steam, to dry the paper web in rotating dryers. As steam condenses inside the dryers by releasing heat to the dryer walls, the condensate is removed using either stationary or rotary siphons. Since the condensate is usually at a saturated state, part of the condensate flashes into vapor during the extraction process and becomes difficult to extract. Thus, additional blow-through steam is used to push the condensate out. Since this blow-through steam is …

Through the synthesis of demographic data from the 152 mugshots that pertain to tattooed arrestees, and three case studies on arrestees with patriotic, nautical, …
Final Vestiges Of Existence: The Survival And Protection Of Cemeteries As Landscapes Of Grieving And Cultural Memory In Louisiana, Ryan M. Seidemann
Final Vestiges Of Existence: The Survival And Protection Of Cemeteries As Landscapes Of Grieving And Cultural Memory In Louisiana, Ryan M. Seidemann
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In many contexts, cemeteries are an afterthought, both in terms of their design and situation in the landscape as well as in terms of what to do when they are encountered during development or other activities. How these sites have been managed and treated, at least historically, often has been a function of who is buried in them. In such situations, considerations regarding the preservation or protection of marginalized peoples’ final resting places were often nonexistent and, consequently, these sites were violently erased from the landscape. Indeed, archaeological evidence has recently demonstrated substantial deviations in practice from de jure legal …

From The Lafitte Greenway To The Carondelet Canal: Genealogy Of An Emerging Place On The New Orleans Landscape, Elizabeth Williams
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In 2015, New Orleans opened the Lafitte Greenway, a linear urban bike path. The Lafitte Greenway follows the footprint of the Carondelet Canal, a historic shipping channel developed in the late-eighteenth century. While it was created as a public resource, the Carondelet Canal became a thriving residential and commercial corridor during New Orleans’ antebellum period, accompanied by public spaces in which class- and race-based hierarchies were produced, contested, and reimagined. Archaeological and archival data from Square 240, a block along the canal’s route, illustrate the tensions inherent in the production of urban public spaces, both past and present. A genealogy …
Temporal Thermal Heterogeneity As A Potential Evolutionary Driver Of Thermoregulation In The Generalist Grasshopper Melanoplus Differentialis From Five Sites In The Midwestern And Southern United States, Devin Preston
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Environmental drivers of the evolution of thermoregulation, especially thermal fluctuation, have been incompletely investigated. I used a combination of field and laboratory studies to determine if thermal heterogeneity selected for greater thermal tolerance or ability to thermoregulate in a generalist grasshopper by testing upper and lower thermal limits, behavioral thermoregulation, and acclimation. I measured these from individuals originating from sites that had varying degrees of thermal fluctuation over time. I found partial support for thermal heterogeneity as an evolutionary driver of thermal tolerance, behavioral thermoregulation, and acclimation. However, whether or not differences in these metrics conformed to my hypothesis varied …

Applied Molecular Dynamics: From Targeting Viral Helicases, To Understanding The Interactions Of Cucurbituril Complexes In Ionic Solutions, Bryan Raubenolt
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Molecular Dynamics simulations are a highly useful tool in helping understand the fundamental interactions present in a variety of chemical systems. The work discussed here illustrates it’s use in determining the conformational dynamics of the Zika and SARS-Cov-2 helicase in a physiological environment, largely in an effort to discover inhibitors capable of rendering the protein inert. Additionally, we show how it can be used to understand paradoxical trends in the anion-induced precipitation of Cucurbituril cavitands.
Viral helicases are motor proteins tasked with unwinding the viral dsRNA, a crucial step in preparing the strand to be translatable by host cells. By …

Get Rich Or Die Tryin’: Media And Black Male Academic Identity Development, Kevin S. Mcclain
Get Rich Or Die Tryin’: Media And Black Male Academic Identity Development, Kevin S. Mcclain
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Black males encounter many difficulties in their educational journeys. Often these disadvantages can be linked to socioeconomic and environmental factors, which have consistently plagued the Black community. However, a relatively unexplored area of interest in higher education is the influence media representation has on the academic identity of Black males. Routinely shown in media outlets as athletes, entertainers, and criminals, Black males rarely view positive representations of themselves across media, thus limiting their academic pursuits. From this study, the researcher hoped to develop a fuller understanding on the influence between multimedia and Black male identity and academic success in higher …
