Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) was signed into law on November 12, 1999. This act is regarded as the most influential deregulation for the U.S. financial services industry in the past one-century. The purpose of this study is to determine and analyze the wealth effects of the GLBA on U.S. and foreign banks and insurance companies. This dissertation is composed of four separate essays. In the first two chapters I investigate the wealth effects of the GLBA on domestic banks and insurance companies. I find that Money Center Banks followed by Super Regional Banks benefit most from this deregulation. I also find …

This study investigated 9 variables to determine their relationship to the frequency of use of "Play Therapy" or non- verbal counseling techniques by elementary school counselors as well as their relationship to counselor perceived self-efficacy when counseling children who speak a language in which the counselor is not fluent. The notion of placing an emphasis on "Play Therapy" or non- verbal counseling techniques with such a population has emerged as a possible therapeutic intervention when working with individuals from a cultural background which is different from that of the counselor. Researchers in counseling have noted the importance of providing adequate …

A Theory And Analysis Of Planing Catamarans In Calm And Rough Water, Zhengquan Zhou May 2003

A Theory And Analysis Of Planing Catamarans In Calm And Rough Water, Zhengquan Zhou

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

A planing catamaran is a high-powered, twin-hull water craft that develops the lift which supports its weight, primarily through hydrodynamic water pressure. Presently, there is increasing demand to further develop the catamaran's planing and seakeeping characteristics so that it is more effectively applied in today's modern military and pleasure craft, and offshore industry supply vessels. Over the course of the past ten years, Vorus (1994,1996,1998,2000) has systematically conducted a series of research works on planing craft hydrodynamics. Based on Vorus' planing monohull theory, he has developed and implemented a first order nonlinear model for planing catamarans, embodied in the computer …

Microgmagnetics Study Of "Seed" Induced Incoherent Magnetic Reversal In A Cobalt Element Array, Hanning Chen May 2003

Microgmagnetics Study Of "Seed" Induced Incoherent Magnetic Reversal In A Cobalt Element Array, Hanning Chen

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

A stochastic dynamic micromagnetics code using the LLG equation has been developed and applied to study the seed induced magnetic reversal of a cobalt element array. The spin orientation of the seed element is chosen to be antiparallel to the spin orientation of the first element in the array producing a domain wall that is stabilized by the strong crystalline anisotropy and exchange interactions of cobalt. By exposing the element array to an applied magnetic field for a specific time, the domain wall moved along the easy axis and was pinned at a specific position. In this manner, the portions …

Miniaturized Fluorescence Biosensor For Studying Neuronal Events, Thuvan Nguyen May 2003

Miniaturized Fluorescence Biosensor For Studying Neuronal Events, Thuvan Nguyen

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

When developing new techniques to analyze neuro-chemical microenvironments, it is important to realize the incredible variability in the cellular content and the response to stimulation between cells and within a single cell. Conventional analysis techniques yield an average result to describe the content and function of cells. This approach often misses important information since the onset of pathological conditions is always initiated in a small number of cells. New minimally invasive single cell analysis techniques are required for single cell studies in order to gain new insights and understanding of cells' functions. The objective of my Ph.D. study was to …

The Third Side Of The Coin, Tamara Wells-Banar Dec 2002

The Third Side Of The Coin, Tamara Wells-Banar

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Third Side of the Coin is a manuscript of poetry exploring ironic distances, both physical and metaphysical, both slight and significant. It opens with a quote from Agha Shahid Ali who asked, "What then is separation's geography?" The poems in this collection describe the geography of separation between individuals, cultures, ideas, man and nature and the physical and metaphysical realms. As the author travels deserts, oceans, and outer space, she seeks proofs of existence and questions natural laws deemed irrefutable. This questioning is reflected in the book's title, which, on one hand, represents a state of geometric impossibility. And …

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Jacob Hawke, a documentary photographer, returns to his long forsaken West Virginia hometown roots to document the activities of a Christian serpent handling church, of which his father is pastor. Jacob, a non-believer, is caught in an emotional vortex consisting of his hatred for his father (whom he abandoned after his mother was killed in a serpent-handling incident) and his growing attraction to Minnie, an enigmatic member of the Signs Following Church. Jacob is slowly lured by the strength of faith demonstrated by the community and must come to terms with his relationship with his father and make a crucial …

A Service Discovery-Enabled Lcd Projector Device, Jeevan Kale Dec 2002

A Service Discovery-Enabled Lcd Projector Device, Jeevan Kale

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The widespread deployment of inexpensive communications technology, computational resources in the networking infrastructure and network-enabled end devices pose a problem for end users: how to locate a particular network service or device out of those accessible. Service providers use Service Discovery Services (SDS) to advertise the descriptions of available or already running services, while clients use SDS to compose queries for locating these services. Service descriptions and queries use the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) to encode vendor specific information and device- or service-specific capabilities as well as the actions addressed to the device or service. This report presents the architecture …

Self-Assembly, Templation And Biomimetics, Xuehe Li Dec 2002

Self-Assembly, Templation And Biomimetics, Xuehe Li

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Self-assembly, templation and biomimetics are three important, overlapping areas in supramolecularChemistry. Some contributions to these three areas are introduced. Novel substituted trispyridylmethanol derived ligands were synthesized to mimic the active site of carbonic anhydrase. The key two-step process in constructing the trispyridylmethanol core structure is proven to be more efficient than the traditional one-step synthesis. Self-assembly is a very efficient way to form nanoscale structure from relatively simple subunits. Tetraphenylmethane-based subunits were synthesized. The result of self-assembly reactions demonstrated the formation of 1~3 nm sized molecules in one step. Potential multi-generation self-assembly on this subunit is also discussed. A novel …

Virtual Fetal Pig Dissection As An Agent Of Knowledge Acquisition And Attitudinal Change In Female High School Biology Students, Rebecca Maloney

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

One way to determine if all students can learn through the use of computers is to introduce a lesson taught completely via computers and compare the results with those gained when the same lesson is taught in a traditional manner. This study attempted to determine if a virtual fetal pig dissection can be used as a viable alternative for an actual dissection for females enrolled in high school biology classes by comparing the knowledge acquisition and attitudinal change between the experimental (virtual dissection) and control (actual dissection) groups. Two hundred and twenty four students enrolled in biology classes in a …

When Urban Education Meets Community Activism: A Case Of Student Empowerment In New Orleans, Lisa Richardson Dec 2002

When Urban Education Meets Community Activism: A Case Of Student Empowerment In New Orleans, Lisa Richardson

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This is an ethnographic study of urban education and community development in the city of New Orleans. In New Orleans, as in all American cities, the public schools are at the center of local politics and the policies that affect community life. Institutions of public education have come under fire for failing to prepare youth to compete in the global economy. This is particularly true in urban communities, where schools serve a higher proportion of students of color facing greater incidences of poverty, underemployment and economic distress. As education policymakers and business leaders look to improve education, many of the …

Specularity In Late Nineteenth-Century French Literature And Art, Marguerite Libassi Aug 2002

Specularity In Late Nineteenth-Century French Literature And Art, Marguerite Libassi

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In the mid-to-late 1800s, French writers and artists resolved to shed their Romantic skins in favor of new self-conscious "husks"--to borrow Baudelaire's poetic term--that is to say: Naturalism, Realism, Impressionism and Symbolism. Some of the older reformers found themselves in an awkward, transitional stage contrary to the younger vanguardists who bore no allegiance to the past. The first group included Baudelaire, Flaubert, Courbet, Manet, Degas and Pissarro while the latter listed among its most successful members: Zola, Mallarmé, Huysmans, Morisot, Monet, Renoir and Cézanne. This thesis argues that specularity--a sort of mirror mimesis--was part of the fertile, artistic exchange between …

Contested Suburbs: Space And Its Representation In Moral Panics, Stacey L. Simmons Aug 2002

Contested Suburbs: Space And Its Representation In Moral Panics, Stacey L. Simmons

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Over the last thirty years there has been modest investigation into the phenomenon of moral panic. Several high profile moral panics have been investigated by social scientists but with relatively little new theoretical developments. This research hypothesizes that there are two different forms of moral panic that have not been discerned by other researchers. I call these: metapanics and localized panics. In addition, in the last two decades a handful of well-respected theorists have drawn attention to the fact that social research is dominated by an historical perspective. Edward Soja. and Henri Lefebvre have been at the fore, but even …

Arbeit Macht Frei, Rebecca Basham Dec 2001

Arbeit Macht Frei, Rebecca Basham

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

"Arbeit Macht Frei," which is translated, "Work Will Make You Free," is a surreal drama that sporadically and without regard to traditional chronological order spans the years of 1931-1947 in Nazi Germany. It is many stories of humanity and its strengths and weaknesses, its triumphs and atrocities, melded into theatrical representation as men and women who are interred in a concentration camp unwillingly build the walls that hold them under Nazi oppression. It is also the specific stories of four individual characters. Heinrich is the camp commander whose work is to construct and run the camp. Herta is the German …

Remembering North Claiborne: Community And Place In Downtown New Orleans, Daniel Robert Samuels Dec 2000

Remembering North Claiborne: Community And Place In Downtown New Orleans, Daniel Robert Samuels

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The construction of Interstate 10 on North Claiborne Avenue in the mid-1960s is seen by many in the historic downtown New Orleans neighborhoods of Treme and the Seventh Ward as a pivotal event in the life of their community. For many years, North Claiborne, with its broad, oak-lined median, had served as an anchor for the social, economic, and cultural life of this predominantly Creole and African American community.

The construction of Interstate 10 radically altered the physical character of North Claiborne. Many of the homes and businesses that lined the street were demolished to accommodate a series of access …

The Social Impacts Of Condominium Conversion In The Vieux Carré Neighborhood, New Orleans, La, Randi Kaufman Aug 2000

The Social Impacts Of Condominium Conversion In The Vieux Carré Neighborhood, New Orleans, La, Randi Kaufman

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In order to better understand the effects of condominium conversions, this study explores the nature and extent of the conversion trend, and its social impacts on the Vieux Carré neighborhood. The increasing number of conversions in the Vieux Carré, also known as the French Quarter, has been the focus of recent controversy and has been perceived by many residents as a threat to the viability of the historic district as a neighborhood. Long-term Vieux Carré residents and neighborhood organizations have expressed fears that the converted rental units are being used as short-term rentals to tourists or second homes, which may …

Building A Better Briton: Parliament's Push For State-Funded Secondary Schools, 1901-1903, Jason K. Burnett Aug 2000

Building A Better Briton: Parliament's Push For State-Funded Secondary Schools, 1901-1903, Jason K. Burnett

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The first three years of the twentieth century were a crucial time in the development of state-funded education in England. The rising tide of Germanophobia in the wake of the South African War impressed Conservative politicians with the need to improve England's educational system in order that she remain competitive in the world. With the aid of a very few Liberal imperialists, the Conservatives were able to shepherd through a series of bills which established state funded secondary schools throughout all of England, an expansion on the system created by the Education Act of 1870 in terms of both curriculum …

The Impact Of Staff Development Practices On Implementation Of Middle School Components, Denise Charbonnet May 1999

The Impact Of Staff Development Practices On Implementation Of Middle School Components, Denise Charbonnet

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Middle schools serve young adolescents who require a separate schooling experience from both elementary and high school students. The Middle School Movement has been around since the 1960s, yet middle schools have not been fully implemented in this country. Middle schools are still in the early stage of reform.

Staff development activities are necessary to prepare school personnel to implement best middle school practices. Because few states require certification at the middle school level, most school personnel are poorly prepared to implement best middle school practices. Thus, Carnegie (1989) recommendations are not fully incorporated in most middle schools.

In this …

The Cenozoic faulting consists of five distinct sets of structures ordered by cross cutting relationships. The oldest, BF1, are fragments of reverse faults trending NW and dipping 45-60 SW. BF2 consist of NW trending, en echelon, sinistral strike-slip faults. BF3 is a conjugate set of N-NE trending …

Women's Bodies And Selves In Chronic Illness: An Analytic Comparison Of Illness Narratives, Jennifer K. Boles Aug 1996

Women's Bodies And Selves In Chronic Illness: An Analytic Comparison Of Illness Narratives, Jennifer K. Boles

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This paper is a critical analysis of individual, chronically ill bodies in their various relationships to Anthony Giddens' construction of the reflexive self, and in turn, how these selves interpret the societal/cultural ideals concerning their bodies. Specifically, this paper is a comparison of anorexic and environmentally ill bodies examined through individual narratives. The struggle between the self and the body in both illnesses expresses the intricate relationship between society and the social location of women and their physical selves.

Saving The Historic Homes Of New Orleans: An Overview Of Plans And Policies Affecting Housing And Historic Preservation, S. Elizabethe Bogart May 1996

Saving The Historic Homes Of New Orleans: An Overview Of Plans And Policies Affecting Housing And Historic Preservation, S. Elizabethe Bogart

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to provide a clear and cohesive plan to assist the City of New Orleans in rehabilitating historic homes and neighborhoods. One of the main attractions for visitors to New Orleans is the charm of its architecture. A larger portion of the architecture is in disrepair. Most of the neighborhoods that are suffering from blight are homes in low-income communities. These families have little help in maintaining these historic structures because of the increased costs.

The administration of Mayor Marc Morial has decided that revitalizing the City's neighborhoods is of primary concern. This administration has …

Potentiality In Lorenzo Da Ponte's Don Giovanni, James Ortego May 1996

Potentiality In Lorenzo Da Ponte's Don Giovanni, James Ortego

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The thesis essay "Potentiality in Lorenzo da Ponte's Don Giovanni" explores the many facets of Don Giovanni's roles and functions in the opera by Mozart-daPonte. The thesis states that Don Giovanni does not merely function as a libertine who is finally punished for his crimes; instead, Don Giovanni offers many various roles and functions to the other characters. The functio of Don Giovanni at any given time in the opera depends on the other character's psychological background and impression of Don Giovanni. For instance, the noble Donna Elvira looks to Don Giovanni for a lover; but the peasant Zerlina sees …

Two Dimensional Power Spectral Estimation Using Constrained Iterative Spectral Deconvolution, Jerome Leslie Coggins May 1993

Two Dimensional Power Spectral Estimation Using Constrained Iterative Spectral Deconvolution, Jerome Leslie Coggins

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Two-dimensional power spectral estimation is an important tool for seismic data analysis and other applications. Some datasets, however, have a limited number of points in one or both dimensions. In seismic applications, there are typically fewer points in the spatial domain as compared to the temporal domain. Conventional spectral estimation techniques suffer from poor resolution on short datasets due to inherent smoothing or bias.

Ramaswamy and loup developed a one-dimensional method for the estimation of power spectra for short datasets. Constrained Iterative Spectral Deconvolution (CISD) greatly improves the power spectral resolution using a straight-forward algorithm. In a comparison to other …
