'The Street Scene Prologue': Holocaust Survivors, The American Nazi Party, And Exodus, Jason Van
'The Street Scene Prologue': Holocaust Survivors, The American Nazi Party, And Exodus, Jason Van
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
During the early 1960s when the American Civil Rights movement was beginning to gain momentum, another movement across the world was taking place to solidify the newly formed country of Israel as a sovereign state. To commemorate the foundation of Israel, American director Otto Preminger created the film Exodus, adapted from a book of the same name by Leon Uris. George Lincoln Rockwell, leader of the American Nazi Party, decided to take action by traveling throughout the country with his closest members to protest the film. Rockwell and his group of Nazis were outraged by the pro-Zionist depictions and the …
Impacts Of Risk Perception On Elderly Vulnerability: An Exploration Of Effects On Disaster Preparedness In Assisted Living Facilities, Jacquelyn Ann Marchand
Impacts Of Risk Perception On Elderly Vulnerability: An Exploration Of Effects On Disaster Preparedness In Assisted Living Facilities, Jacquelyn Ann Marchand
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Disasters are increasing in intensity and frequency. With this expectation, it is important for communities to be proactive in disaster preparedness to ensure the safety of their citizens. Vulnerable populations need special consideration in disaster planning. The elderly are one of these vulnerable groups. By 2025 one-quarter of the U.S. population will fall into the 65 or older age category. Age itself does not make a person vulnerable. It is physical and cognitive change that often accompany aging which can make a person vulnerable. The importance of elderly vulnerability and risk perception cannot be overlooked. The casualty data alone can …
An Investigation And Analysis Of The 2021 Surfside Condo Collapse, Ryan L. Blanchard
An Investigation And Analysis Of The 2021 Surfside Condo Collapse, Ryan L. Blanchard
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
A central mission of civil engineering is to create safe structures to prevent the loss of life and property. The most effective tool in this effort is the development and standardization of codes to govern best practices, material specifications, and safe minimums and assumptions. While much of this is done through thorough testing and research, many lessons are learned the hard way. Historically, major disasters and failures have brought about new standards and changes to ensure that history is not repeated. On June 24th, 2021, 98 people lost their lives when Champlain Towers South, a 12-story condominium in Surfside, Florida, …
State Estimation—Beyond Gaussian Filtering, Haozhan Meng
State Estimation—Beyond Gaussian Filtering, Haozhan Meng
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation considers the state estimation problems with symmetric Gaussian/asymmetric skew-Gaussian assumption under linear/nonlinear systems. It consists of three parts. The first part proposes a new recursive finite-dimensional exact density filter based on the linear skew-Gaussian system. The second part adopts a skew-symmetric representation (SSR) of distribution for nonlinear skew-Gaussian estimation. The third part gives an optimized Gauss-Hermite quadrature (GHQ) rule for numerical integration with respect to Gaussian integrals and applies it to nonlinear Gaussian filters.
We first develop a linear system model driven by skew-Gaussian processes and present the exact filter for the posterior density with fixed dimensional recursive …
Self-Train Semi-Supervised Contour Detection For Automated Monitoring Of Surface Water Across The Globe, Mohammad B. Syed
Self-Train Semi-Supervised Contour Detection For Automated Monitoring Of Surface Water Across The Globe, Mohammad B. Syed
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Surface water is a critical resource that requires constant monitoring due to drastic impacts of human use, climate change, and severe weather phenomena. Existing monitoring techniques are limited and vary in their efficacy. It is proposed, here, that contour detection in the visible range is better for monitoring dynamic and long-term changes to surface water bodies. For that purpose, a semi-automated method for collecting and labeling water contours from Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 images is presented. Due to the need for human inspection, the method has thus far generated 14K labeled images from more than 200,000 images. Given the cost of …

Synthesis Of Inorganic-Organic Perovskite Hybrid Materials Via A Microwave Assisted Method, Anamika Poduval
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The research presented here focusses on fabrication of organic modified inorganic two-dimensional and three-dimensional materials via microwave assisted methods. These hybrid materials are of importance due to their capacity to incorporate the characteristics of both organic and inorganic components. Microwave methods have been utilized to expedite the topochemical modification of layered perovskites. In one set of studies, microwave assisted grafting reactions were performed on layered perovskite (HLaNb2O7) materials with a series of hydroxy carboxylic acids. The reactivities of these organic compounds with the layered perovskites and the influence of precursor, temperature and time are demonstrated. The …

Trinkets, Baubles, & Ephemera: This Will Look Real Good On Your Shelf., Kjelshus H. Collins
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
I am an amalgamation: Printmaker, ceramic sculptor, and toy maker.
I usually only make things with intent. I hardly ever throw anything away or destroy my art. I like the idea of archiving my work as possible artifacts for future generations. Prehistory, archaeology, mass production, and the consumers are my inspiration. Art is all an act of creation. I use various rituals and practices to create. The constant thoughts on alchemy and the personifications of the objects are driving influences. Through sculpting I create a new object in this reality. This object can be personified by simple alterations to the …

"Expendable As A Battleship:" Uaw Local 50, Demobilization, And The Post War Future Of The Willow Run Bomber Plant, 1940-1945, Andrew W. Good
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The Willow Run Bomber Plant was leased to the Ford Motor Company during World War II and specialized in the mass production of Consolidated B-24 bombers. While Willow Run’s war service and production record is often highlighted, the plant’s demobilization experience is often ignored along with the United Auto Workers Local 50 that represented the plant’s 21,000 workers. Allied victory in Europe was accompanied with layoffs that threatened Willow Run’s continued operation. This study investigates the advocacy and goals of Local 50 leaders as they underwent a unique campaign through the spring and summer of 1945 that advocated for the …

Video Games, Grief, And The Character Link System, Nam Nguyen
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Grief can encompass more than just the loss of real-life people. It can be felt with the loss of a pet, changes in daily structure, and even the loss of video game characters. The topic of grief related to video games and video game characters comes at a time when games as a service (GaaS) continue to increase in popularity and the phenomenon where these games also inevitably terminate service. To combat this unique form of grief, the Character LINK System was created as a tool that uses simple natural language processing (NLP) techniques to offer support to the bereaved …
Climate Change And Urban Tourism: Preservation Strategies And Destination Management Policies In Coastal Cities. The Case Of Venice, Nina Balan
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Climate change is an influencing phenomenon in the present global perspective, having a wide range of impacts at different levels within society and the global tourism industry. Climate change has progressively affected coastal areas more vulnerable to intense hydrodynamic and atmospheric events due to their proximity to water. The primary process to be held responsible is eustatic sea-level rise due to anthropogenic (human-induced) and morphological (natural) factors over time. While the exact magnitude of global sea-level rise and regional variability remains uncertain, sea-level rise is considered one of the most certain consequences of anthropogenic climate change in the coastal regions …

Design And Synthesis Of Novel Synthetic Cannabinoid 5-Hydroxy-1h-Indazole-3-Carboxamide Metabolites, Nichole Ann Pianovich
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Since the discovery of Δ9-THC, the pharmaceutical industry has continuously developed synthetic analogs intending to develop compounds that exhibit the bioactivity of natural cannabinoids but are devoid of its psychoactivity. Synthetic cannabinoids often exhibit potencies significantly greater than Δ9-THC, as do their metabolites. Phase I metabolism of synthetic cannabinoids bearing an indazole core predominantly proceeds through oxidative transformations to produce mono-hydroxylated variants of the parent compound. Recent studies have primarily focused on N-1/C-3 hydroxylated pentyl side chains and carboxamide linked groups. These compounds often retain affinity and potency for the CB1 receptor …
Fluctuating Parasite Prevalence Is Not Linked To Patterns Of Mhc Class Ii-Ss Diversity In An Island Endemic Reptile, Gina Zwicky
Fluctuating Parasite Prevalence Is Not Linked To Patterns Of Mhc Class Ii-Ss Diversity In An Island Endemic Reptile, Gina Zwicky
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Few studies have explored the evolutionary mechanisms that maintain adaptive immunogenetic diversity in nature. We took advantage of museum samples to test for evidence of parasite-mediated fluctuating selection at MHC Class II-ß loci in an endemic island reptile. The Saban anole Anolis sabanus is commonly infected with three species of malaria (Plasmodium). Proportions of each parasite species detected in anole blood samples fluctuated over space and time, suggesting competitive interactions between parasites or differences in vector ecology. Our analyses of parasite prevalence and MHC Class II-ß allelic variation found that malaria infection was not associated with patterns of …

Enchanting Music: How English Playwrights Use Music In Renaissance Witchcraft Plays, Alyssa Anders
Enchanting Music: How English Playwrights Use Music In Renaissance Witchcraft Plays, Alyssa Anders
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Music is an integral aspect of the Early Modern theater, but because most of this music is lost, scholars and students typically only analyze these works using literary theories. This approach does not allow for a full understanding these plays, which is especially true of witchcraft plays because witches typically utilize music for their spells. In this thesis, I am exploring the interdisciplinary connection of music and literature in the Jacobean witchcraft plays The Witch (c. 1616) by Thomas Middleton and The Tragedy of Sophonisba or The Wonder of Women (1604-1606). From my analysis of the existing music from The …

"The Best Defense Is A Good Offense:" Teaching Phishing Defense Tactics Through A High Agency Playable Experience, Saroj Duwal
"The Best Defense Is A Good Offense:" Teaching Phishing Defense Tactics Through A High Agency Playable Experience, Saroj Duwal
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Phishing attacks are challenging to detect and can have severe consequences. For example, in 2020 alone, phishing attacks cost organizations more than $1.8 billion. Numerous phishing training programs such as reading materials, training videos, and games aim to mitigate the incurred losses. However, regardless of the medium, nearly all existing training places the learner in the role of the victim.
We hypothesize placing the players as an attacker tasked with strategically creating emails will naturally lead to players better recognizing phishing emails. Based on this hypothesis, we have developed an interactive game that trains the users against phishing attacks as …
Lessons From Perceived Rejection: An Argument For Process Oriented Thinking In Theatre, William Russell Leak
Lessons From Perceived Rejection: An Argument For Process Oriented Thinking In Theatre, William Russell Leak
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Rejection is a part of human existence. This is especially true in the world of art. The following is a case-study that documents the trial-and-error process by which I accepted the challenge of portraying a character 30 years my senior and in my opinion the least substantial and meaningful role within the ensemble of the play “Stupid Fucking Bird”; the result of this study led to the discovery of the truth that serious growth as an actor comes not from the external acknowledgement of peers but from the internal effort produced by the actor. This work is examined through the …

The Effect Of Conditional Volatility, Skewness, And Excess Kurtosis On Interest Rates, Sarah H. Al Talafha
The Effect Of Conditional Volatility, Skewness, And Excess Kurtosis On Interest Rates, Sarah H. Al Talafha
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This paper examines the lognormality assumption of per capita, real consumption growth, which is a common assumption in asset pricing models. We found that shocks to household consumption growth are persistent, negatively skewed, and have excess kurtosis. Therefore, we revisited the fundamental relation between expected growth and the real risk-free rate, assuming a non-Gaussian distribution of consumption growth, and found a robust positive association between real consumption growth and real risk-free interest rate, and a negative relationship between macroeconomic uncertainty and real rates, although less in magnitude, which is consistent with both intertemporal smoothing and precautionary savings. This paper offers …
The Relationship Between Political Contributions And Federal Earmarks And The Impact Of State-Owned Enterprises On U.S. Competition, Tahsin I. Huq
The Relationship Between Political Contributions And Federal Earmarks And The Impact Of State-Owned Enterprises On U.S. Competition, Tahsin I. Huq
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
With the reintroduction of hard earmarks in the U.S., it is essential to understand the factors that drive earmark receipt. Legislative earmarks have historically represented a significant source of revenue for several firms. We examine the relationship between political expenditure, federal earmarks, and subsequent firm performance. Using a sample of earmarks from 2008-2010 Appropriations bills, we demonstrate that Political Action Committee (PAC) contributions by firms to Senators and Representatives strongly predict both the size and number of earmarks directed to these companies. We also show that PAC contributions to a member of Congress increase the probability that a politician writes …
Levee Seepage Identification From Aerial Images Using Machine Learning, Sofiane Benkara
Levee Seepage Identification From Aerial Images Using Machine Learning, Sofiane Benkara
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Levees protect from natural disasters that can threaten human health, infrastructure, and biological systems by protecting low-lying lands near or below sea level from flooding. However, seepage in those levees undermines their structural integrity, leading to failures. Today the United States has approximately over a hundred thousand miles of levee, many of which are reaching or have surpassed their initial design life. Given the concern, there is a need to develop reliable, rapid, and non-intrusive levee monitoring systems to detect the presence of seepage. This study explores the use of Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) integrated with Discrete Cosine Transform …

Analysis Of Residual Neural Networks For Marine Mammal Classification Using Multi-Channel Spectrograms, Daniel T. Murphy
Analysis Of Residual Neural Networks For Marine Mammal Classification Using Multi-Channel Spectrograms, Daniel T. Murphy
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Surveys of marine mammal populations are an essential part of monitoring the welfare of these animals and their ecosystems. Marine mammal vocalizations provide a reliable method of identifying most species, but passive acoustic monitoring of underwater audio may generate large quantities of data that exceed the capacity of human classifiers. Preprocessing and machine learning techniques provide a method of automating the classification process. In this study, we explore machine learning approaches to vocalization classification using convolutional neural networks with residual learning. Optimal parameters for noise-removal, spectrographic window functions, preprocessing augmentations, and multi-channel spectrogram generation are derived through a series of …
Exploring The Effect Of Cte Coursework And Work Experience On Adolescent Career Readiness, Albion Sumrell
Exploring The Effect Of Cte Coursework And Work Experience On Adolescent Career Readiness, Albion Sumrell
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Career readiness is an area of youth development that is often overlooked in secondary education. Preparing students for the professional world is especially important for high school students, who upon graduation, will have to decide to pursue postsecondary education or a career. Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, which involve teaching youth employable knowledge and skills, have been shown to assist students in transitioning more seamlessly from high school to college and careers. Work experiences, such as jobs and internships, have also been found to support adolescent career readiness. Currently, there is not a widely used quantitative measure for assessing …

Investigation Of Added Mass Of Heeled 2-D Sections In A Seaway Using The Patch Method In Heave, Roll, And Sway Motions, Adam N. Bacon
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This thesis analyzes the effects of the angle of heel and beam-to-draft ratio on the sectional added mass of primitive cross-sectional shapes in regular harmonic waves in the frequency domain using 2-D boundary element method for uncoupled heave, sway, and roll motion. This 2-D boundary element method uses the patch method developed by Söding (1993b) [4] to compute the added mass of asymmetric geometry. The angles of heel used varied from 0 to 90 degrees in 5-degree intervals, while the beam-to-draft ratios varied from B/T = 0.5 to B/T = 3.0 in half increments. Triangles, rectangles, and rectangles with rounded …
The Relationship Between The Practice Of Martial Arts, Anxiety, Wellness, And Self-Efficacy, William K. Knight Jr
The Relationship Between The Practice Of Martial Arts, Anxiety, Wellness, And Self-Efficacy, William K. Knight Jr
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Although anxiety is a frequently researched topic, the growing numbers of diagnosed cases and the state of the present outcomes warrant the study of alternative approaches to address the causes and conditions of its prevalence, as well as possible adaptive strategies and tactics to improve outcomes for clients with anxiety. Counseling distinguishes itself in part due to its focus on well-being rather than mere alleviation of diagnosed symptoms. As such, it may be useful to measure the likelihood of some strategies and tactics associated with improved well-being in attempting to reduce symptoms of anxiety.
This study measured the practice of …
