Community In The Cell: Queer Women’S Space And Place In New Orleans, Jordan Hammon, Jordan Hammon
Community In The Cell: Queer Women’S Space And Place In New Orleans, Jordan Hammon, Jordan Hammon
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines queer women’s history and space/places of community in New Orleans using spatial analysis and feminist theory to fill the silences. The Special Citizens Committee for the Vieux Carré laid the foundation for regulating queer women and transmasculine people starting in the 1950s. Even after the committee ended, New Orleans Police Department and the Vice Squad had the power to invade and harass places of community for queer women and transmasculine people. Despite this hostility, queer women and transmasculine people resisted and made a place for themselves in New Orleans. As a result of their persistence through visibility …
The Story Of Jennie Steers: An Examination Of Race, Gender, And Lynching In Northwest Louisiana, Lauren Smith
The Story Of Jennie Steers: An Examination Of Race, Gender, And Lynching In Northwest Louisiana, Lauren Smith
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
As the nineteenth century ended, the American South entered a new century equipped with the foundations of a Jim Crow society. Through political intimidation, segregation, and racial violence—most notoriously through the practice of lynching—white Southerners reasserted white supremacist rule. Yet the lynching of Black men in this era is more often documented than the plight of Black women at the hands of white mobs and local authorities. By focusing on Jennie Steers, a woman lynched outside of Shreveport, Louisiana in 1903, this project sheds light on the violent history of Northwest Louisiana and the ways in which Black women navigated …

Shifting Images: Film And Historical Legacy Of Malcolm X, 1959-2021, Kristina M. Smith
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Malcolm X, born Malcolm Little and died el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz, left an indelible mark on the American consciousness. Between 1952 and 1964, Malcolm X earned renown as a minister for the Nation of Islam under the guidance of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. The first film appearance of Malcolm X himself was in the 1959 documentary The Hate That Hate Produced, a film that sent both Malcolm and the Nation of Islam onto the national, and eventually international, stage. The next attempt to immortalize the man in film would be after his death, in 1972’s Malcolm X, a documentary based on …

In partnership with the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park, my project entitled “African Dance in New Orleans: The Roots of Black New Orleans Dance” exhibit will focus on the African diasporic roots of Black traditional dance practices within New Orleans’ African American community. This project aims to diversify the public and political expressions of Black dance in New Orleans. It argues that the study of dance forms and practices uncovers narratives and fragments of African and African American cultural history in New Orleans that are impossible to glean from other sources. This thesis will support three modes of African …
Automating Lackenby's Method: The Design Of A Set Of Scripts To Execute Lackenby's Method With Mcnaull's Expansion In Rhinoceros 3d, Mara E. Kramer
Automating Lackenby's Method: The Design Of A Set Of Scripts To Execute Lackenby's Method With Mcnaull's Expansion In Rhinoceros 3d, Mara E. Kramer
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In vessel design, modifying the design of a preexisting hull is a common practice to save time and labor compared to designing a hull from scratch. This can be achieved either by manually adjusting the hull model in a 3D modeling software or by systematically adjusting certain vessel parameters using an algebraic method. However, these methods are time-intensive and do not fully utilize the capabilities of modern software. To address this issue, this paper presents a set of Rhinoscript and Python scripts that automate part of the hull modification process using Lackenby’s method with McNaull’s expansion. The developed code utilizes …

Functional Ecology Of Calling And Mating In The Cricket Species (Acheta Domesticus And Telogryllus Commodus), Fadeke Adeola
Functional Ecology Of Calling And Mating In The Cricket Species (Acheta Domesticus And Telogryllus Commodus), Fadeke Adeola
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Whole organism performance traits are measures of an organism’s ability to complete dynamic functions relevant to fitness within the contexts of both sexual and natural selection. Performance capacities are subject to allocation based life history trade-offs, but are also frequently implicated in signaling via visual or auditory displays, many of which are sexually dimorphic. But although performance traits are known to influence the outcome of male combat interactions, the effect of performance on mating interactions is poorly understood. Recently, the invertebrate neurotransmitter octopamine has been shown to affect performance expression in house crickets independent of the underlying morphology, raising the …

The Impact Of Grout Specimen Geometry On Compressive Strength Results, Leo J. Keegan
The Impact Of Grout Specimen Geometry On Compressive Strength Results, Leo J. Keegan
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Some project standards specify that grout be tested in accordance with ASTM C1019 “Standard Test Method for Sampling and Testing Grout for Masonry”. This is true even when the grout is not being used for the purpose of masonry construction, such as bridge riser bearing plates and anchoring applications, amongst others. In these instances, the grout compressive strength samples cannot be formed in accordance with ASTM C1019, as there are no masonry units.
The purpose of this project was to evaluate the accuracy of sampling grout in accordance with ASTM C109 “Standard Test Method of Hydraulic Cement Mortars (Using 2-inch …
Digital Forensics For Investigating Control-Logic Attacks In Industrial Control Systems, Nauman Zubair
Digital Forensics For Investigating Control-Logic Attacks In Industrial Control Systems, Nauman Zubair
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Programmable logic controllers (PLC) are required to handle physical processes and thus crucial in critical infrastructures like power grids, nuclear facilities, and gas pipelines. Attacks on PLCs can have disastrous consequences, considering attacks like Stuxnet and TRISIS. Those attacks are examples of exploits where the attacker aims to inject into a target PLC malicious control logic, which engineering software compiles as a reliable code. When investigating a security incident, acquiring memory can provide valuable insight such as runtime system activities and memory-based artifacts which may contain the attacker's footprints. The existing memory acquisition tools for PLCs require a hardware-level debugging …
Phosphate Mineralogy And Paragenesis Of The Fletcher Pegmatite, North Groton, New Hampshire, Susanna T. Kreinik
Phosphate Mineralogy And Paragenesis Of The Fletcher Pegmatite, North Groton, New Hampshire, Susanna T. Kreinik
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Investigation of phosphate assemblages selectively collected at the Fletcher Mine pegmatite, North Groton, New Hampshire, yielded eighteen discrete secondary phosphate species. Secondary phases were formed via metasomatic (high temperature) and hydrothermal (low temperature) alteration of primary triphylite and fluorapatite. Mineral associations bear proximal phases known to occur under contrasting conditions, both oxidizing and reducing, suggesting the formation of microenvironments during concomitant mineral generation. Late-stage hydrothermal fluids provide ions taken up in low temperature secondary phases with calcium and magnesium most prevalent in these suites. High iron to manganese ratios in analyzed specimens establish the relative evolution of the pegmatite host. …
Girlhood And Engendered Alienation In The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter And A Tree Grows In Brooklyn, Lauren C. Dolese
Girlhood And Engendered Alienation In The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter And A Tree Grows In Brooklyn, Lauren C. Dolese
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Utilizing a girls’ studies perspective and materialist feminist lens, this paper seeks to put Carson McCullers’ The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (1940) in conversation with Betty Smith’s A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1943). Besides being published in the early 1940s, both works feature young girls navigating class struggles, exploring their identities, and struggling against dominant ideologies specific to their time and place. McCullers’ and Smith’s novels depict how a patriarchal, capitalist society imposes upon young women a narrow, misogynistic view of themselves and the women around them—facilitating the social reproduction of oppression and alienation. In depicting these realities of …

Abstract
This study explored school leaders and how they perceive and use autonomy to operate a school. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to better understand the lived experiences of school leaders and how they perceive and use their autonomy while operating a charter school in New Orleans, Louisiana. There is relatively little documentation on the perceptions of how school leaders feel they use and balance their autonomy when operating a charter school. This study builds upon the current and past research which regards principal autonomy as a driver of the success of charter schools and school quality. …
Ncrna-Protein Interaction Prediction Using Language-Based Features, Krishna Shah
Ncrna-Protein Interaction Prediction Using Language-Based Features, Krishna Shah
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) play a significant role in several fundamental biological processes by binding to RNA-binding proteins (RBPs); hence, it is necessary to study ncRNA-protein interaction (RPI). Several classic and deep-learning machine learning models have been pro-posed to predict RPI. These models first need to collect features of RNA and protein, such as physicochemical properties, secondary and tertiary structure, et cetera, before feeding them into the model. More recently, after the advancement of high throughput sequenc-ing and the improvement in Natural Language Processing (NLP), transformer models like BERT-RBP and Evolutionary Scaling Model (ESM) can be trained to automatically extract feature …
U.S. Hegemonic Control In Latin America: The 1973 Coup In Chile, Seth Wilbur
U.S. Hegemonic Control In Latin America: The 1973 Coup In Chile, Seth Wilbur
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
On September 11, 1973, the Chilean armed forces staged a coup d’état against their democratically elected and first socialist president, Salvador Allende. The coup ended in Allende’s death and seventeen years of military dictatorship under the auspices of General Augusto Pinochet. Although seemingly a domestic affair, the United States executive branch under the leadership of President Richard Nixon played a significant role in facilitating the coup and it is unlikely the coup would have occurred without U.S. support. While contemporary sources still point to American fears over communist incursion in the western hemisphere as the principal reason for U.S. involvement …
Environmental Sensitivity Of Maternal And Offspring Phenotype In The Green Anole (Anolis Carolinensis) Lizard, Jamie Marks
Environmental Sensitivity Of Maternal And Offspring Phenotype In The Green Anole (Anolis Carolinensis) Lizard, Jamie Marks
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Animals dynamically invest their acquired energetic resources into fitness-related traits, and life-history trade-offs occur when limited resources are invested in a given trait at the expense of another. The phenotypic effects of life history trade-offs are well documented, but the mechanisms facilitating these trade-offs are poorly understood. One such mechanism is the insulin/insulin-like signaling (IIS) network, and specifically its two primary hormones: insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) and insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF2). IGF1 is well-characterized but IGF2 is severely understudied, though it is present in nearly all amniotes and sometimes expressed at higher levels than IGF1 in adulthood. I …
Analysis Of Forensic Artifacts In Database Memory Using Support Vector Machine, Mahfuzul I. Nissan
Analysis Of Forensic Artifacts In Database Memory Using Support Vector Machine, Mahfuzul I. Nissan
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Memory analysis allows forensic investigators to establish a more complete timeline of system activity using a snapshot of main memory (i.e., RAM). Investigators may rely on such analysis to detect malicious activity and understand the scope of what data was exfiltrated. This is of particular interest in the presence of incomplete or untrusted logs, where a privileged user (or an attacker with such capabilities) can altogether bypass or disable logging. In such instances, a forensic investigator can still rely on the fact that data must ultimately be processed in memory, regardless of the information that is recorded in audit logs. …
Photoproducts And Transformations Of Organic Pollutants In Aquatic Environments, Elizabeth Whisenhant
Photoproducts And Transformations Of Organic Pollutants In Aquatic Environments, Elizabeth Whisenhant
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The degradation of petroleum-derived organic pollutants in aquatic systems occurs through lengthened exposure to UV and visible light. In this thesis, organic pollutants include crude oil, refined fuels, and plastic particles or films. The photo-oxidation of these pollutants are monitored over natural waters. To characterize the molecular signatures of photo-oxidized petroleum, bench-scale spills of refined fuels and crude oil were irradiated over Alaskan waters. A 4-component fluorescence PARAFAC model revealed a unique feature associated with photo-oxidized refined fuel unlike traditional “microbial”- or “terrestrial-like” components. In contrast, crude oil photolytically decomposed into humic-like components and oxidized aliphatics. FT-ICR MS data corroborated …
Advocacy Experiences Of Licensed Professional Counselors Who Serve Minor Survivors Of Abuse And Neglect, Earniesha S. Lott-Kennebrew
Advocacy Experiences Of Licensed Professional Counselors Who Serve Minor Survivors Of Abuse And Neglect, Earniesha S. Lott-Kennebrew
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
LPCs in Louisiana operate in multiple professional roles and maintain various responsibilities, including advocacy for clients. Although numerous advocacy opportunities occur when counselors are working with children, a minimal amount of research exists regarding advocacy training, as well as the associated intricacies and responsibilities of advocacy. Lack of awareness of advocacy issues is a prominent barrier to advocacy involvement and it is suggested that counselor education programs are infusing advocacy education into courses but are not necessarily teaching specific constructs of advocacy. Thus, relevant and existing advocacy literature is sparse.
The purpose of my qualitative phenomenological research is to understand …
Analyzing The Robustness Of Prevalent Social Engineering Defense Mechanisms, Bhupendra Acharya
Analyzing The Robustness Of Prevalent Social Engineering Defense Mechanisms, Bhupendra Acharya
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Most cybersecurity attacks begin with a social engineering attack component that exploits human fallibilities. Hence, it is very important to study the prevailing defense mechanisms against such attacks. Unfortunately, not much is known about the effectiveness of these defense mechanisms. This dissertation attempts to fill this knowledge gap by adopting a two-fold approach that conducts a holistic analysis of social engineering attacks.
In the first fold, we focused on phishing attacks, which remain a predominant class of social engineering attacks despite two decades of their existence. Entities such as Google and Microsoft deploy enormous Anti-Phishing Entity systems (APEs) to enable …
Storm Intensity And Forward Speed Controls On Back-Barrier And Shoreface Sediment Dynamics Along The Louisiana Coast, Md Mohiuddin Sakib
Storm Intensity And Forward Speed Controls On Back-Barrier And Shoreface Sediment Dynamics Along The Louisiana Coast, Md Mohiuddin Sakib
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
High energetic storms import sediment to back-barrier bays and marshes and produce a perennial footprint that contributes to the long-term evolution of the inner shelf, bays, and marsh platform. The magnitude of sedimentation in back-barrier bays and marshes varies with storm characteristics (e.g., storm intensity, forward speed, size, and track). However, quantifying the impacts of storm characteristics on the sediment exchange between the inner shelf, bays, and marshes and documenting the resulting net sediment import and export patterns across these interfaces remains largely unexplored. Here we applied a calibrated Delft3D hydrodynamics and sediment transport model to a microtidal bay-marsh complex …
Teachers’ Perceptions Of Their Roles In Blended Learning Environments, Sabrina E. Pence
Teachers’ Perceptions Of Their Roles In Blended Learning Environments, Sabrina E. Pence
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Schools are widely implementing blended learning, defined as a combination of face to face instruction and computer-assisted instruction, to increase student achievement. Given that the computer is taking on a component of instruction, there is some evidence that the role of the teacher is changing. The purpose of this study is to understand the perceptions of primary teachers about their role and possible role change in a blended learning environment. A qualitative study using transcendental phenomenology was conducted among a group of primary teachers who teach reading and math in grades K-4. Role theory was applied to illuminate whether the …
Synthesis And Electrochemical Characterization Of Alkali Metal Borides As Redox Active Anion Frameworks, Michael R. Shabetai
Synthesis And Electrochemical Characterization Of Alkali Metal Borides As Redox Active Anion Frameworks, Michael R. Shabetai
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Redox activity in intercalation cathodes is commonly attributed to changes in oxidation states of transition metal ions. Recently, a growing body of evidence revealed that the redox activity of oxygen contributes to the capacity of some known cathodes. We focused on designing an oxygen free intercalation cathode with redox-active anions. In order to overcome the entropic driving force for the decomposition of a charged redox active anion cathode, we looked for chemistries with solid (no gases) possible decomposition products. Additionally, the involvement of anions in a network of covalent bonds with shared electrons was considered as a possible way for …
Denoising And Deconvolving Sperm Whale Data In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico Using Fourier And Wavelet Techniques, Kendal Mccain Leftwich
Denoising And Deconvolving Sperm Whale Data In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico Using Fourier And Wavelet Techniques, Kendal Mccain Leftwich
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The use of underwater acoustics can be an important component in obtaining information from the oceans of the world. It is desirable (but difficult) to compile an acoustic catalog of sounds emitted by various underwater objects to complement optical catalogs. For example, the current visual catalog for whale tail flukes of large marine mammals (whales) can identify even individual whales from their individual fluke characteristics. However, since sperm whales, Physeter microcephalus, do not fluke up when they dive, they cannot be identified in this manner. A corresponding acoustic catalog for sperm whale clicks could be compiled to identify individual …
Tools For Predicting Emulsification Capacity Of Crude Oil Exposed To Sunlight: Impact Of Photoproduced Carboxylic Acids On Emulsion Stability, Chaka Nacaya Brown
Tools For Predicting Emulsification Capacity Of Crude Oil Exposed To Sunlight: Impact Of Photoproduced Carboxylic Acids On Emulsion Stability, Chaka Nacaya Brown
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The role of acids in the formation of emulsions from sunlight exposed petroleum is not well understood. To elucidate the impact of sunlight on the formation of emulsions from petroleum, Macondo, its surrogate and NIST 1619b and 2717a were separately exposed to simulated sunlight for up to 48 hours as a film dispersed into a quartz dish, or a film spread on water. Emulsion stability was scored from 0-5. All exposures demonstrated a correlation between emulsion stability and sunlight exposure with no observable emulsification in absence of photoproduction due to sunlight exposure. Aqueous studies of DOCHC (dissolved organic carbon …

Thermo-Mechanical Process Modeling Of Friction Stir Deposition Of Ti6al4v Alloy, Gazi A. Raihan
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Additive friction stir deposition (AFSD) is a novel metal additive manufacturing (AM) process that enables fast, scalable manufacturing of metal and alloys by utilizing friction stirring and metal feeding processes together. Thermo-mechanical process optimization during the AFSD process is very critical for ensuring better quality control, improved microstructure, and desired thermo-mechanical properties. In this study, the numerical models based on computational fluid dynamics are developed to investigate spatial thermal and flow behaviors such as temperature evolution, wall heat flux, material velocity, pressure distribution, etc. in the metal printing of Ti6Al4V alloy via the AFSD process. The material conversation law with …
Erosion And Resuspension Of Cohesive Sediments In Coastal Louisiana, Laith Qasem Shamaileh
Erosion And Resuspension Of Cohesive Sediments In Coastal Louisiana, Laith Qasem Shamaileh
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The research presented in this study is motivated by the need to improve the predictions of cohesive sediment erosion and subsequent transport. In addition, the knowledge of the geotechnical engineering soil properties related to the erosion of sediments in coastal Louisiana has broad implications as these properties are used in transport models guiding the current restoration efforts. The erosion measuring device used in the study is the Cheng-Han Tasi and Wilbert Lick Shaker. Previous studies have been conducted before using the Shaker, but challenges with the calibration of the shear stress hampered the resuspension results produced by the Shaker. Therefore, …
Network Intrusion Detection Using A Deep Learning Approach, Sharmin Aktar
Network Intrusion Detection Using A Deep Learning Approach, Sharmin Aktar
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Due to the extensive use and evolution in the cyber world, different network attacks have recently increased significantly. Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack has become one of the fatal threats to the Internet, where attackers send massive amounts of packets to the target system to make online systems unavailable to legitimate users. Proper attack detection measurement is crucial to defend against these attacks. This work proposes a deep learning-based model using a contractive autoencoder to detect anomalies. We train our model to learn the normal traffic pattern from the compacted representation of the input data, and then apply a stochastic threshold …
