Market Frictions And The Efficiency Of Capital Allocation, William J. Hippler Iii May 2014

Market Frictions And The Efficiency Of Capital Allocation, William J. Hippler Iii

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The following dissertation contains two unique empirical studies that contribute to the overall literature in the field of Financial Economics in the areas of mutual fund investing and financial intermediation and regulation. The first Chapter, entitled “The Impact of Macroeconomic Stress on the U.S. Financial Sector”, examines the relative impact of macroeconomic stress on financial and non-financial U.S. firms. Empirical results show that macroeconomic shocks appear to have a larger impact on financial firms. Additionally, the sensitivity of financial firms to macroeconomic events can be traced to the influence of non-depository institutions, or “shadow banks”, like finance and investment companies, …

A Framework For Air Dispersion Modeling – A Hypothetical Case Of Port Operations, Amrita Iyer May 2014

A Framework For Air Dispersion Modeling – A Hypothetical Case Of Port Operations, Amrita Iyer

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

One of the primary modes for pollutants to reach the human body is through their release into the atmosphere and dispersion in the nearby areas. This makes air emissions one of the important components of an environmental assessment. They are frequently of interest to the people living in the vicinity of the site. The analysis carried out in this research provides a framework for atmospheric dispersion modeling of air pollutants using AERMOD, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) approved regulatory model, for modeling port related emissions. There are various sources of emissions from the ports, however for this …

Willful Misinterpretation, Peter Hoffman May 2014

Willful Misinterpretation, Peter Hoffman

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

My work in painting and sculpture is an ongoing problem-solving activity in which the issues of how to present images or objects, and how to make a compelling piece of art, frequently clash. By combining a sense of earnestness in the means in which my work is made with self-conscious and deliberately awkward choices, my work occupies a place between pleasureful, visual abandon and the calculated, humorously abject. Through combinations of disparate elements, formal choices, and attitudes towards subject matter, I am making work that seeks to create new images within contradictions.

New Metal-Nhc Complexes: Synthesis, Characterization, And Uses, Roy A. Kelly Iii May 2014

New Metal-Nhc Complexes: Synthesis, Characterization, And Uses, Roy A. Kelly Iii

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

N-Heterocyclic Carbenes (NHC) present a viable alternative to traditional phosphine ligands in a variety of organometallic mediated catalytic reactions. Singlet ground-state carbenes are stabilized by the push-pull presence of two adjacent nitrogen atoms in an imidizolium 5-membered ring, allowing neutral electron donor properties. The ability to synthesize a variety of NHC ligands with differing steric and electronic properties is possible by changing the sustiuents on the nitrogen atoms of the imidizolium. Tunable characteristics and enhanced chemical and thermal stability give NHC’s an advantage over phosphines in many catalytic systems.

This dissertation focuses on the use N-Hetercyclic Carbenes in a variety …

Major League Baseball And World War Ii: Protecting The Monopoly By Selling Major League Baseball As Patriotic, Patrick A. Stephen

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Green Light letter from President Franklin Roosevelt to Major League Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis gave MLB permission to continue throughout World War II. The team owners felt relief that MLB is the only professional sport to survive during the years of World War II (1941-1945). MLB became a primary contributor toward the war effort. While war-supporting efforts were conducted, team owners positioned themselves to benefit from the bond between baseball and the American people. MLB portrayed itself through the commissioner’s office policy as a patriotic partner by providing entertainment for American factory workers and contributing equipment to servicemen …

Two Essays In Finance: Analyzing The Value Of Cash To U.S. And Non-U.S. Firms And Institutional Trading In Stock Index Futures, Li Xu

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In the first chapter, we analyze the role of market development, risk premium, and transparency as factors influencing the value of cash in firms listed as American Depository Receipts. Based on the method by Pinkowitz and Williamson (2002), our primary results are as follows. The market value of cash is greater on average for ADR firms than for U.S. firms, and within the ADR sample the value of cash is greater for firms based in less developed countries after 2007 financial crisis but not before. Together, the results suggest that the market development is especially important during more volatile periods. …

The Influence Of Cultural And Social Capital On Post-Baccalaureate Students’ Decision To Enter And Complete Graduate School, Kelly L. Alig

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Despite increased diversity noted in undergraduate education in recent years (Antonio, 2003), students from non-majority groups continue to be underrepresented in graduate school. Many research studies (Perna, 2000, 2004; Perna & Titus, 2005; Rowan-Kenyon, 2007; Walpole, 2003, 2007b) have used measures of cultural and social capital to increase the explanatory power of the traditional econometric framework in college choice models, but have not used these sociological variables as a primary focus. The purpose of this correlational study was to explore the influence of cultural capital and social capital on the decision of bachelor’s degree completers to enter graduate school and …

Further Investigation Of A New Traction Stress Based Shear Strength Characterization Method With Test Data, Srimanth Boppudi May 2014

Further Investigation Of A New Traction Stress Based Shear Strength Characterization Method With Test Data, Srimanth Boppudi

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, a new traction stress based method for characterizing shear strength is investigated by carrying out a series of shear strength tests. The AWS method for the calculation of shear strength shows significant discrepancies between longitudinal and transverse specimens. The main purpose of this new traction based definition for shear strength is to demonstrate that there exists a single shear strength value regardless of specimen geometry and loading conditions. With this new approach a better correlation between shear strength values for transverse and longitudinal specimens is achieved. Special issues occur with the multi-pass welds in regards to the …

Women Rule, But Do They Make A Difference? Women In Politics, Social Policy And Social Conditions In Latin America, Erika Del Pilar Burton May 2014

Women Rule, But Do They Make A Difference? Women In Politics, Social Policy And Social Conditions In Latin America, Erika Del Pilar Burton

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Since the transitions to democracy in Latin America, women in the region have undergone major changes in their roles in society. From traditionally only present in the home to participating in collective action efforts, and finally participating at increasing numbers in governments, women have made incredible strides in the Latin American region. Latin American countries have successfully advocated for the inclusion of women in government, but few studies in academia focus on determining whether their inclusion has made a difference in government processes or in society. Borrowing from the literature positing that women are behaviorally different from men as well …

An Analysis Of The Green Knoll Salt Dome, Located In The Southeast Green Canyon, Deep Water Gulf Of Mexico, Randal J. Broussard

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The western portion of the Mississippi/Atwater fold belt in the Gulf of Mexico contains what is known as The Green Knoll Salt Dome. The creation and growth of this salt diapir is punctuated by salt deposition, salt migration, sediment loading, and is linked to the “Frampton” fold belt. An indicator of these growth periods is exhibited in an angular unconformity (halo-kinetic sequence boundary) that flanks the diapir. This unconformity developed during the Miocene-Pliocene chronostratigraphic boundary. The “Redwood” (Green Canyon 1001) prospect was drilled after the discovery of middle Miocene sands containing hydrocarbons in the Mad Dog field (GC 826). The …

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

For most of the Cold War, the United States attempted to maintain friendly relations with the Communist nations comprising the Eastern Bloc, but with no other Soviet satellite was the relationship as close as it was with Romania. No other member nation of the Warsaw Pact took to the United States’ overtures so eagerly. Diplomatic relations between the United States and the Romanian Communist government were established relatively early, almost immediately following the end of the Second World War. However, it was not until 1968, when Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceauşescu denounced the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia, that the …

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Usakos pegmatite, Namibia, is a highly evolved, rare-element LCT-type pegmatite. The pegmatite is emplaced in metasedimentary rocks of the Kuiseb formation. Ca and Al enrichment at the contact, B mineralization in the country rock and Sr mineralization in the core of the pegmatite are all evidence of interaction of the pegmatite melt and hosting country rock. K/Rb ratios within mica and feldspar are very low indicating a highly evolved melt. Tourmaline has a fractionation trend from Fe-rich at contact and intermediate areas to Fe-depleted in core regions and pockets. Columbite tantalite group minerals show a similar trend in fractionation, …

Leap Of Faith: Clergy In State Legislative Elections, Victonio B. Spencer May 2014

Leap Of Faith: Clergy In State Legislative Elections, Victonio B. Spencer

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study expands the literature on clergy as political actors by shedding light on the relative electoral performance of clergy who hold office in state legislatures. Kinney’s 2008 study on the occurrence of clergy in local office, as well as other works showing the divergence in attitudes towards church-state separation among racial groups and religious traditions, illustrate potential factors affecting the performance of clergy in elections. The analyses examine the factors related to differences in vote percentages, margins of victory, and campaign funding between clergy and non-clergy. These factors include racial and religious traditions and how their effects interact. The …

Comparative Biology Of Three Species Of Costa Rican Haeterini, Laura Alexander

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Documenting life history characteristics of populations, especially of herbivorous insects such as butterflies, is fundamental to the ecological study of tropical rainforests. However, we know relatively little about tropical forest butterflies. Here, I combine information gathered using the mark-release-recapture (MRR) approach with manipulative and observational experiments in a natural environment to explore aspects of the population biology of three closely-related species of Costa Rican fruit-feeding understory butterflies (Cithaerias pireta, Dulcedo polita, and Pierella helvina), specifically: vertical stratification, attraction to and persistence in fruit-baited traps, relative abundance and distribution, movement patterns, probabilities of recapture and daily survival, …

Keep It Up: The Things Within And Without, Vanessa R. Centeno May 2014

Keep It Up: The Things Within And Without, Vanessa R. Centeno

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

My art explores my attraction and repulsion to a commodity driven society. Paint Thing and Saint Thing are characters that I created to push my boundaries as a painter and question my process within painting. Working through my agitation, feeling of loss and confusion, I find that two parts need to be present: a belief in the process and the fear of it coming undone.

I use painting, sculpture and video to question the materiality of canvas and paint. I incorporate plastic objects, glittery materials, and things that have ephemeral qualities. I am attracted to synthetic forms and objects when …

The History And Memory Of The Assassination Of Lord Moyne, Hannah Dailey May 2014

The History And Memory Of The Assassination Of Lord Moyne, Hannah Dailey

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This paper analyzes the assassination of Lord Moyne, the British Resident Minister of the Middle East, in 1944 by the extremist Jewish group Lehi and the effect the incident has carried throughout the last sixty eight years in both Britain and Israel. The weight of the memory of the assassination as well as how terrorism is defined becomes poignant with the 1975 peace agreement between Egypt and Israel following the Yom Kippur War. With an eye to how Israel has continued to make the assassination part of its national identity and Britain’s reaction in 2012 with the death of Yitzhak …
