Jeju Island, located on the remote periphery of the Korean peninsula and historically a site of exile, has become a popular destination for domestic migration over the past decade. Drawing on Michel Foucault’s notion of heterotopia as a methodological framework and taking Jeju Island as an example to reveal “islandness,” this paper discusses how the island is imagined and represented in Korean society. From this perspective, Jeju Island is regarded exteriorly as a place outside the ordinary and internally as a heterogeneous place. When clarifying Spinoza’s concept of affect, Deleuze declares, “Hope as such or love as such represents nothing, strictly nothing.” In this paper, I approach the question of love by taking a detour of nonhuman affinity. First, I present this paper as an experimental becoming that weaves through heterogeneous lines of thinking and creating. Second, explicating the Deleuzian-Guattarian notion of “abstract machine” alongside Isabelle Stengers’s figure of “inappropriable unknown,” I argue for viewing the cosmos and art as interconnected abstract machines that foster novel realities and communities. In view of the salient characteristics of technological innovation and human-machine symbiosis in the era of artificial intelligence, Chinese literary circles have purveyed a productive exploration of “literary study in the era of artificial intelligence.” Chinese scholars’ innovation of literary theory consists of three characteristics. This essay conceptualizes omnibus life writing—collective autobiographical volumes—as a means of decolonizing memories of communism and the transition in Romania. I argue that omnibus life writing offers a viable framework for challenging entrenched postcommunist narratives and fostering a relational and intersectional model of remembering the recent past. Paabat: Provincializing Postmemory In Merlie Alunan’S Poems On The Balangiga Encounter Of 1901, Ian Harvey A. Claros

This essay deploys the Waray word for haunting, apparition, and feeling—paabat—to examine Merlie Alunan’s poems about the Balangiga Encounter of 1901 and its aftermath in the anthology Running with Ghosts and Other Poems (2017). This historical event transpired when the townsfolk launched a surprise attack against the American soldiers stationed in Balangiga, a town in Samar, Philippines. Despite its success, the Americans harshly retaliated by pacifying the entire island through militarization, massacre, and arson. Alunan’s poetry attempts to reconstruct a range of events and subjectivities that constitute this traumatic history. Initially, it can be posited that her poetics and self-reflexivity …

This essay considers a moment in José Rizal’s novel El Filibusterismo (1891)—namely, the substitution of the Spanish figure of “black King Melchor” with the folk “King of the Indios,” Bernardo Carpio, in the eyes of a native coachman—with a critical attention to how such an instant of comparison unfolds. The essay first ruminates on the crucial phrase deployed by Rizal to signify the moment, pensar naturalmente, which has been interpreted differently across various translations of the novel, but specifically rendered here as alaála or remembering. War, Violence, And Womanhood: (Re)Membering Women’S Military Narratives In China’S Revolution And Civil War, Szu-Nuo Chou

In this ethnographic study, the author interviewed Chinese women aged 85 and older to explore their childhood and adolescent experiences of exile and military violence in the context of World War II and Chinese Civil War. Throughout the years of China’s revolution and interparty conflicts, ordinary Chinese women suffered from war-related violence—not only on the frontlines, but especially in domestic spaces, where the head of the household (e.g., father,husband, or son) engaged in a variety of violent and misogynistic performances associated with culturally-rooted Chinese patriarchy and masculinity. This article describes a discursive shift at the beginning of the twenty-first century in academic and public debates from postcolonial to decolonial critiques and asks what this means for the study of national and imperial memories. While some critics, like Robert J. C. Young, see this shift within postcolonial discourse, others, like Sylvia Wynter, believe that postcolonial theory itself needs to be decolonized. Regardless of whether one believes the shift is taking place within postcolonial studies or caused from outside, in any case it presents at least twelve complex transformations. When Sigmund Freud visited the Netherlands in the 1920s, he oversaw the Dutch landscape while travelling by rowing boats, carriages, and on foot. The reclamation of the Zuyderzee especially made an impression. He concluded that this drive for culture to control nature was similar to how the Ego wanted to control the Id. This article will analyze a range of Australian picture books that both explore the topic of disability and serve as educational tools for exploring diversity issues. The books were identified in a survey administered by the State Library of New South Wales (NSW) public library service, which identified 62 books that deal with diversity. Thirteen of the 62 books were assessed as having characters with a disability—including autism, mental illness, dementia, spina bifida, neurodiversity, physical disability, deafness, and implied but unidentified disabilities. Since the year 2000, South Korea has been the propagator of the Hallyu (Korean Wave) that has spread across the world, demonstrating the country’s cultural potential. The subject of Hallyu can be approached from several perspectives, first by identifying its origins, current status, and trends by genre; by looking at its effects and the measures that can sustain the Hallyu phenomenon; and also by examining Hallyu trends by country.
