Strategies Implemented By Top Ncaa Olympic Coaches To Enhance Support Surrounding Their Programs, Lee Roberts, Coyte G. Cooper, Erianne A. Weight

Journal of Applied Sport Management

A shift in institutional priorities related to profit maximization in “big time” sport programs (men’s basketball and football) has led to the elimination of many men’s Olympic sport programs (Ridpath, Yiamouyiannis, Lawrence, & Galles, 2009). As previous literature has demonstrated, coaches can work toward minimizing elimination decisions by raising money that will limit the financial burden of their program on the athletic department (Weight, 2010). Thus, the purpose of the study was to explore fund-raising practices of top NCAA Division I wrestling coaches (N = 10) to determine strategies that programs can implement to encourage sustainability initiatives. Following the identification …

Future Trends In Outsourced Marketing Within Division I Intercollegiate Athletics: An Initial Round Of A Delphi Study, Robert H. Zullo

Journal of Applied Sport Management

The purpose of this study was to examine opinions regarding future trends in outsourced intercollegiate sports marketing from managers of the outsourced marketing companies hired to administer media and marketing rights at select National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I schools. Twenty-eight of the 61 companies selected to participate in this study responded. Via the Delphi Method, data were collected as descriptive statistics, and frequencies were analyzed along with qualitative responses. The findings indicated that outsourced companies seek new business opportunities for the future with athletic departments. The most likely area involved athletic facility naming rights; retailing, licensing and concessions …

Moving On Up: Division I Athletic Directors’ Career Progression And Involvement, Robin Hardin, Coyte G. Cooper, Landon T. Huffman Jan 2013

Moving On Up: Division I Athletic Directors’ Career Progression And Involvement, Robin Hardin, Coyte G. Cooper, Landon T. Huffman

Journal of Applied Sport Management

Collegiate athletic directors (ADs) are the chief executive officers within the athletic department of the colleges and universities they serve. While they are certainly high-profile, influential professionals, there are a limited number of research studies that focus in-depth on the career experiences of these athletic administrators. The purpose of this research was to examine the career experiences of athletic directors. The results showed a shift in the need for athletic directors to understand business and development and obtain a graduate degree. More than 80% held a master’s degree with previous areas of employment in development and marketing. Such skills were …

Game Day Experience Through The Lens Of Critical Incident Technique, Robin Hardin, Brody Ruihley, Cindy Veraldo

Journal of Applied Sport Management

This qualitative study examined the game-day experiences of fans at a college football game using Critical Incident Technique. This technique identifies and examines important occurrences, or incidents, identified by participants based on their own positive or negative experience. A total of 2,450 individuals responded to the optional open-ended question on a survey. Respondents indicated the most positive aspects of the experience as the enjoyment, pride, and tradition associated with attending the games. The facility, atmosphere, and policies and operations were reported as the most negative aspects of the experience. It is important to understand the experience of fans at events …

In Pursuit Of Sport Sustainability: Fund-Raising And The Ncaa Division I Track And Field Core Product, Logan W. Roberts, Erianne A. Weight

Journal of Applied Sport Management

National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I track and field programs have been a target of elimination in recent decades (Irick, 2011) as funds are often allocated to sports that provide the largest perceived potential return on investment (Marburger & Hogshead-Makar, 2003). Building on research that documents the influential role coaches can play in sport sustainability efforts (Cooper, 2012; Weight, 2010; Weight & Cooper, 2011), this study examines fund raising and fortification strategies of 111 Division I coaches through survey methodology. Important fund raising strategies emerged including communication with donors, maintaining an up-to-date contact database, and providing thank-you notes and/ …

Sustainable Volunteerism At A Major International Sporting Event: The Impact Of Perceived Event Prestige, Seungmo Kim, Sung Il Hong, Damon P.S. Andrew

Journal of Applied Sport Management

The primary purpose of the current study was to examine the impact of perceived event prestige (PEP) on intention to continue voluntary work via volunteer commitment and satisfaction at a globally prestigious sporting event. A total of 202 volunteers at the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Championship, held in August, 2011, in Daegu, South Korea, participated in the study. The results of structural equation modeling (SEM) supported the full mediating effects of both attitudinal variables between PEP and intention to continue voluntary work. In other words, volunteers are more likely to feel satisfied with their voluntary work and develop …

A Polarizing Issue: Faculty And Staff Perceptions Of Intercollegiate Athletic Academics, Governance, And Finance Post-Ncaa Investigation, Gregory Lewinter, Erianne A. Weight, Barbara Osborne, John Brunner

Journal of Applied Sport Management

Following an athletics scandal that invoked internal upheaval and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) sanctions, non-athletics employees at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill were invited to participate in a survey investigating their satisfaction with academics, governance, and finance of intercollegiate athletics. This study extends the 2006 Knight Commission sponsored study, Faculty Perceptions of Intercollegiate Athletics: A National Study of Faculty at NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) Institution to a post-infraction single-school population. Three philosophical viewpoints describing basic faculty issues and assumptions that divide Division I institutional reformers were utilized to frame the examination (Sack, 2009). …

Faculty Attitudes Toward Athletics At Ncaa Division Ii Institutions, Travis Feezell

Journal of Applied Sport Management

Faculty members at institutions in three Division II conferences were surveyed regarding their opinions on general issues in intercollegiate athletics. In addition, faculty members at these institutions were asked to express their opinions and understanding as to the role of intercollegiate athletics and the place of faculty governance of athletics at their respective institutions. Analysis revealed that the demographic characteristics of NCAA divisional status, institutional status, gender, and past participation in athletics do influence the attitudes of faculty members and that these attitudes generally differ from faculty colleagues in Divisions I and III. Moreover, analysis noted that Division II faculty …

Managing A Sport Organization: The Impact Of Recruiting, Selecting, And Retaining Elite Level Coaches In Sport, Jonathon Edwards, Marvin Washington

Journal of Applied Sport Management

Hockey clubs in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada are a fascinating setting to study as they merge issues related to youth sport participation and volunteerism with elite level sport development. We examine the management of elite level hockey clubs, through interviews, to understand how the organizations develop and implement processes that enable them to obtain and maintain a positive reputation through the development of elite level hockey players. The results of our analyses show that hockey clubs view the coach as a vital part of creating and maintaining a successful organizational reputation. This study makes two contributions to the sport management literature; …

Perceptions Of Criminal And Gang Involvement Among College Student-Athletes, Geoff Alpert, Jeff Rojek, Scott H. Decker, J. Andrew Hansen, Randy Shannon, Dan Radakovich

Journal of Applied Sport Management

The involvement of youth and young adults in gangs and other criminal activities continues to be a serious threat and grounds for concern among a variety of stakeholders on college campuses and beyond. The extant literature examining the criminality of intercollegiate student-athletes is limited to media accounts or research focused on few types of offenses or athletics programs. The presence and impact of gangs in institutions such as secondary education and the military has been documented, but the expansion of gangs to college athletics has not been empirically verified despite media portrayals. The current study addresses these gaps in knowledge …

A Resource-Based Analysis Of The Gonzaga University Men’S Basketball Program, Kenneth S. Anderson, G. Eddy Birrer

Journal of Applied Sport Management

In recent years, the Resource-Based View (RBV) of firms has been applied to strategic management in the context of sport. Numerous studies have examined the relationship between human resource management and athletic performance, as well as success in sport sponsorship. Other studies employed the RBV in the context of professional sports franchises and a major NCAA athletic program. This paper builds on previous research by using the RBV to show how the effective management of a strategic resource has led to a sustained competitive advantage for the Gonzaga University men’s basketball program. The key resource of the Gonzaga program is …

Internet Sport Bloggers: Who Are These People And Where Do They Come From?, Edward M. Kian, Joe W. Burden Jr., Stephanie D. Shaw Jan 2011

Internet Sport Bloggers: Who Are These People And Where Do They Come From?, Edward M. Kian, Joe W. Burden Jr., Stephanie D. Shaw

Journal of Applied Sport Management

Little is known of Internet sport bloggers, who increasingly are becoming important cogs in sport journalism. In this phenomenology, semi-structured interviews were conducted with highly prominent sport bloggers. All were recorded, transcribed, and coded. A total of five dominant themes emerged from the data that focused on the shared experiences and learned attitudes toward Internet sport journalism. Overall, these themes showed sport bloggers were highly educated and very happy with their jobs, had a wide array of past work experiences that often had little to no relation with blogging or sport journalism, consider their jobs too varied to fall under …

Bridging The Gap: The Perceptions Of Athletic Directors And Coaches Regarding Nonrevenue Program Discontinuation Decisions, Erianne A. Weight, Coyte G. Cooper Jan 2011

Bridging The Gap: The Perceptions Of Athletic Directors And Coaches Regarding Nonrevenue Program Discontinuation Decisions, Erianne A. Weight, Coyte G. Cooper

Journal of Applied Sport Management

The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of athletic directors and coaches regarding wrestling program discontinuation decisions. In the past few decades, an alarming number of NCAA men’s wrestling programs have been eliminated throughout the United States (Student-athlete, 2006). Historically, the educational value offered through intercollegiate athletics was enough to justify financial funding of these programs; however, the marked trend toward the discontinuation of sports that are nonrevenue in nature support the notion that this justification may no longer be sufficient in today’s big-time intercollegiate athletic environment. In order to ensure the sustainability of programs that do …

The Relationship Of Fantasy Football Participation With Nfl Television Ratings, John A. Fortunato Jan 2011

The Relationship Of Fantasy Football Participation With Nfl Television Ratings, John A. Fortunato

Journal of Applied Sport Management

An estimated 30 million people participate in fantasy football leagues, yet little academic research has been conducted on this topic. While there are many factors that can contribute to the television rating of a sports event, this study asks if fantasy football participation can serve as an additional motivating factor for fans to watch National Football League (NFL) games on television. Results provide some evidence that games with more NFL players starting in a high percentage of fans’ fantasy football leagues have higher Nielsen ratings, although there are differences for the games on NBC vs. ESPN, percentage of starting fantasy …

Implications For Concussion Assessments And Return-To-Play Standards In Intercollegiate Football: How Are The Risks Managed?, John J. Miller, John T. Wendt, Nick Potter Jan 2011

Implications For Concussion Assessments And Return-To-Play Standards In Intercollegiate Football: How Are The Risks Managed?, John J. Miller, John T. Wendt, Nick Potter

Journal of Applied Sport Management

The lack of understanding regarding the symptoms and effects of concussions by athletes and coaches can generate pressure on both the team physicians to diagnose concussions as well as the sport administrators who need to be aware what concussion protocols are being followed. The significance of appropriate diagnosis of a concussion and the returnto-play protocols may be complicated by the number of guidelines available as well as the reliance on the athlete to self-report the symptoms of a concussion. While the grading guidelines have advanced the use of uniform terminology and increased awareness of concussion signs and symptoms, the lack …

Implications Of Toppling Goal Posts In College Football: Managing Institutional Risk, David Lavetter, Yun Seok Choi

Journal of Applied Sport Management

This article discusses a summary of lawsuits stemming from fans being injured by toppled goal posts following American college football games. Several examples of goal post-related injuries occurred during post-game celebrations when crowds surged onto the fields at various stadiums. The purpose of this article is to explicate the legal implications of lawsuits filed by injured plaintiffs and discusses potential liability incurred by educational institutions. Very limited legal precedence exists to facilitate understanding of the full legal responsibilities of injured individuals, institutions, parties providing security, or goal post manufacturers; however, courts have ruled on three particular cases involving injuries sustained …

Do Bcs National Championships Lead To Recruiting Violations? A Trend Analysis Of Ncaa Division I (Fbs) Infractions, Robert S. Clark, Paul J. Batista

Journal of Applied Sport Management

With the NCAA suggesting increased severity of sanctions for NCAA rules violators (Wieberg, 2008), an area of great concern to athletic directors is the institution’s violation of Article 13 of NCAA Division I legislation while recruiting prospective student-athletes. While researchers state that NCAA violations are on the rise (Mahony,1999; Jordan, Greenwell, Geist, Pastore, & Mahony, 2004), very little research has been conducted to ascertain the number of NCAA recruiting violations committed, and by whom. The purpose of this study was to describe the nature of recruiting violations, including major and secondary violations, conference affiliation of institutions committing major violations, then …

Social Problems In Major League Baseball: Revisiting And Expanding Talamini’S Analysis Twenty Years Later, Mark Vermillion, G. Clayton Stoldt, Jordan Bass Jan 2009

Social Problems In Major League Baseball: Revisiting And Expanding Talamini’S Analysis Twenty Years Later, Mark Vermillion, G. Clayton Stoldt, Jordan Bass

Journal of Applied Sport Management

The purpose of this research was to review, revisit, and expand Talamini’s social problems within Major League Baseball (MLB). Talamini’s categories, which include gambling, player/managerial violence, spectator violence, cheating, crime, and greed are reviewed and applied to social problems in MLB since the original publication in 1987. In order to better understand social problems and deviant behavior within MLB, the original categories are related to specific deviance theories to better understand causation of deviance. Theories are then organized by Shoemaker’s proposed integrated model, which organizes causes of deviance on the structural, social-psychological, and psychological levels. Relating Talamini’s social problems categories …
