JADARA
Peer counselors and program directors from eight agencies in Northern and Southern California were interviewed in order to determine how their programs differed from other services for
hearing impaired persons, and how these programs compared with peer counseling programs in other settings. It was concluded that peer counselors provide a unique service by meeting a wide variety of needs in a supportive setting characterized by a shared background with the client. It was also apparent that the programs surveyed here had some features that were startlingly unlike peer counseling programs in other settings while in other ways they were similar. …

As a consequence of limited access to health information, Deaf and hard of hearing (Deaf/ hh)’ individuals may be at higher risk for health complications and tobacco-related diseases. To address this issue, Communication Service for the Deaf (CSD) of Oklahoma sought funding from the Oklahoma Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust to implement the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Tobacco Use and Cessation Program. The five-year project began in 2006; it was the first major health education initiative in the state that focused on the Deaf community. Prevalence rates and demographic information were collected regarding tobacco use among Deaf/hh participants. In addition, …

JADARA
How are deaf students who choose to seek employment after leaving high school prepared for the world of work? Do they have the basic, everyday readiness skills necessary to compete? Have the families, school systems, vocational rehabilitation and the community worked together effectively enough to to ensure success for the student? Legislation requires that the student have an individualized program and that collaborative efforts occur among the parties involved. But does that happen? The author proposes some practical hands-on techniques for putting the mandates of current legislation into practice to further greater success for the student entering the workforce.
