Technical And Stylistic Changes In Jewelry From The Time Of Theophilus To The Time Of Cellini, Katherine Gresham Hodges

Honors Theses

My thesis consists of research from an art historical perspective concerning a number of changes in the design, style, and fabrication of jewelry from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance and the influences that brought about those changes. I have found that social political, geographical, technological, and philosophical shifts in the Renaissance all wielded significant impact on the changes in design and style of jewelry. I have approached the subject by studying jewelry as an art form equal to other art forms such painting and sculpting, rather than as a decorative art or craft. By focusing on one prominent goldsmith …

Assessing Companies Allowance For Doubtful Accounts: Earnings Management And The Recession, David Mcarthur Neyhart Jan 2012

Assessing Companies Allowance For Doubtful Accounts: Earnings Management And The Recession, David Mcarthur Neyhart

Honors Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to determine if the economic downturn from 2007- 2009 had any significant influence on company’s ability to estimate bad debt expense, and to examine if there were any noticeable trends of earnings management. The estimates that companies use for their estimated allowance for doubtful accounts are largely unregulated and subjective, and therefore are more easily manipulated. This point is illustrated in the Statements on Auditing Standards number 57.4 by saying, “As estimates are based on subjective as well as objective factors, it may be difficult for management to establish controls over them. Even when …

The River Thief: A Collection Of Short Fiction, Andrew David Paul

Honors Theses

With this collection of short stories, 1 attempt to ereate linked pieces with a heavy emphasis on Southern Jewish identity and Eastern European folktale influences. It is in my opinion that the cuiTent Refomi Judaism movement, while modem and accessible. seeks to imitate popular. Western religious trends with no emphasis on uniqueness or authenticity. I looked towards Southern writers with distinct tones and storytelling abilities such as Lewis Nordan, Mark Richard, and Ban*y Hannah for inspiration. In addition, 1 incoiporated iconic Jewish archetyties into some of these stories such as the Wandering Jew and the Golem ot Prague. Although Southern …

An Analysis Of The Metropolitan Atlanta Residential Real Estate Market: Beyond The Housing Bubble, Thomas Mcdowell Platt

Honors Theses

This thesis examines the Metropolitan Atlanta housing market after the collapse of the Atlanta housing bubble between 2007 and 2011. Time-series analyses were performed for home prices, the amount of time homes spent on the market (days on market), and the number of homes listed for sale (inventory). Simple linear regression analyses were used to determine the effects of days on market and inventory on home prices. Homes were separated into quartiles and the analyses were repeated to determine how different price ranges behaved over the four-year period. Following the collapse of the Atlanta housing bubble, home prices and inventory …

Food Preparation Habits Among College Students: An Exploration And Culinary Intervention, Mary Lindsey Simpkins

Honors Theses

The obesity rate among Americans has been growing at an alarming rate in recent years; because of this, there has been much inquiry into the possible causes, interventions, and prevention methods for this problem. One major trend that appears to have an impact on this obesity epidemic is the large proportion of meals eaten outside the home namely, at fast food or sit-down restaurants. This trend is especially prevalent among college students, whose lifestyle is generally marked by an abundance of stress coupled with a lack of time and money. Because of this lifestyle and a lack of food preparation …

The Causes And Effects Of Chinese Investment In Africa, Jamey Hurst Jan 2012

The Causes And Effects Of Chinese Investment In Africa, Jamey Hurst

Honors Theses

China’s engagement in Africa represents a radical departure from the modem paradigm of development. To the West, it represents a threat to the “Washington Consensus” and the accepted aid paradigm, but to African countries, the Chinese are providing much desired investment. Due to a paucity of information on this subject, this research aims to consolidate perspectives on this type of investment and identify factors leading to as well as the possible effects of the China-Africa relationship. This is accomplished by contextualizing the China-Africa relationship within a wider discourse on development, and then separating African countries on the basis of total …

The Scottish Court Of Session And Federal Supremacy In The United States Of America, Matthew Karl Suess Jan 2012

The Scottish Court Of Session And Federal Supremacy In The United States Of America, Matthew Karl Suess

Honors Theses

The federal court system under the United States Constitution varied substantially from the English judicial system. This thesis will explore the extent to which the Court of Session, Scotland’s highest court, influenced the form of the United States federal court system. First, the thesis will examine the Acts of Union of 1707, the contract binding the kingdoms of England and Scotland into one political body. The language of the Acts of Union, specifically the language regarding the form and power of the Court of Session, will serve to draw a parallel with the United States Constitution. Next, the thesis will …

Memphis Taxpayer Blues: An Economic Analysis Of The Memphis Pilot Program, Norman Lee Morris Iii

Honors Theses

This thesis evaluates the economic impact of targeted tax cuts in Tennessee. Specifically, I examine the Payment-In-Lieu-Of-Taxes (PILOT) Program in Memphis, TN Using economic data supplied from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis s Federal Economic Data and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, I consider the effectiveness of the program’s ability to improve economic conditions in Memphis, TN. The merits of a targeted tax cut program such as PILOT are often touted as the total number of jobs created and amount of dollars invested into the community. However, this method of counting the total number of jobs created overstates …

Antibiotic Resistance Of Bacteria Isolated From Leafy Green Salad Vegetables, Brooke Elizabeth Reynolds Jan 2012

Antibiotic Resistance Of Bacteria Isolated From Leafy Green Salad Vegetables, Brooke Elizabeth Reynolds

Honors Theses

Bacterial isolates obtained from samples of five varieties of leafy green vegetables were tested for resistance to four different antibiotics: ampicillin. erythromycin, streptomycin, and tetracycline. Isolates were separated based on media type (TSA vs. R2A media), sterilization techniques (surface sterilized vs. unsterilized). cultivation methods (conventional vs. organic), and specific lettuce type origins. Resistances were tested using a microscale broth culture technique, which allowed for growth of isolates in the presence of different concentrations of antibiotic. Antibiotic resistance was observed in all groups of isolates, although levels of resistance varied depending on the particular isolate and the antibiotic tested. Isolates were …

Currency: The Fantastic Festival Of The Mind, Kristen Marie Vise Jan 2012

Currency: The Fantastic Festival Of The Mind, Kristen Marie Vise

Honors Theses

Currency: The Fantastic Festival of the Mind is an exploration of memory and ephemerality through abstracted imagery originating in the wonder of childhood, the magic of festivals, and the divinity of nature. In the work, an underlying “current” or essence of wonder serves as the “currency” of subjects ranging from carousels to clocks to Sycamore trees. The work explores fragmented concepts of time and memory that intertwine with whimsical imagery in the mind over time, leading to the development of fanciful percepdons and reassembled experience. Pulling from sources as diverse as Environmental Graphic Design, contemporary grapic design. Surrealism, and German …

On The Fringes Of Peripheries: A Comparison Of The Working-Class Representations Of Larry Brown And Irvine Welsh, Christopher Paul Patterson

Honors Theses

In this thesis, I compare the fiction of Mississippi author Larry Brown and Scottish author Irvine Welsh, specifically in how they represent their respective regions’ working classes. The project concerns the genre of working-class fiction in both the American South and Scotland, as well as the general fields of Southern and Scottish contemporary fiction. The groundwork for this thesis began when I read Welsh’s Trainspotting while studying at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland during the spring of 2011.1 wanted to explore why Welsh’s working-class representations felt so similar to the Southern fiction I read at the University of Mississippi, …

Love's Labour's Lost 2.0: Exploring Identity Formation On Facebook And Beyond, Mitchell Watson Hobbs Jan 2012

Love's Labour's Lost 2.0: Exploring Identity Formation On Facebook And Beyond, Mitchell Watson Hobbs

Honors Theses

An adaptation of William Shakespeare's play of the same name, Love's Labour's Lost 2.0 utilizes the social network website Facebook as its stage so as to explore the unique problems and opportunities that social media affords identity creation. Through this lens, I find that identity creation in this digital world is discursively composed, much like identity in the analog world, and serves to shunt dissent or action that may threaten the status quo. Facebook's ultimate promise to this constantly composing individual is the comfort and security of an audience.

Mechanism Of Action Of A Novel Antifungal Compound, Amber Ward Jan 2012

Mechanism Of Action Of A Novel Antifungal Compound, Amber Ward

Honors Theses

Opportunistic fungal infections have become problematic in recent years. There has been an emergence of new fungal pathogens, development of antifungal resistance, and increasing prevalence. In addition, toxicity, resistance, and lack of efficacy as a single agent limit the effectiveness of current antifungal drugs. Therefore, new drugs targeting new pathways are greatly needed. An analog derived from the marine natural product phloeodictine, analog PHL5-34A, was identified as having strong in vitro antifungal activity. In this study, its mechanism of action (MOA) was investigated in the model yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This study made use of a collection of 166 yeast mutants …

Working Towards A Solution To The Obesity Epidemic: A Marketer's Perspective, Elizabeth Ann Clippard Jan 2012

Working Towards A Solution To The Obesity Epidemic: A Marketer's Perspective, Elizabeth Ann Clippard

Honors Theses

The obesity epidemic is a social issue in that critics are quick to blame business and government for failing the consumers. The truth is that all three parties have failed each other by allowing such a cultural change to occur. The issue is similar to the tobacco public health crisis following the spike in lung cancer in the 1950s and 60s. The tobacco companies were blamed entirely for their unhealthy products and the government still spends millions today regulating their products. In order to improve upon this course of action, I believe that a more cooperative solution exists in order …

History, Culture, And Religion In The Development Of Racial Ideology: A Case Study Of The Dutch Reformed Church Of South Africa And The Presbyterian Church Of America, Alexandria Claire Denton

Honors Theses

This thesis deals with the Christian religious tradition in relation to the ideology of white supremacy. By contrasting the history and ideologies of the Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa and the Presbyterian Church of America, this thesis will attempt to show that past history and the present culture affect the way religious communities interpret sacred texts. The primary objective of this thesis is to demonstrate the interactive role of history, culture, and religion within religious communities and society in order to breed conscious awareness of how these institutions are mutually effective. Religious adherents are not only products of their …

Honors Theses

The Hispanic market is a fast growing demographic that has begun to drastically reshape the population composition of the United States. Many unique and different cultures and identities are represented under the label, “Hispanic." Many companies have started l recognizing the value and importance of the Hispanic demographic. Along with the rising Hispanic population, Millennials are becoming an increasingly significant market. Hispanics have a lower median age, 25.4, than both African Americans and Caucasians in the United States and play a vital role as members of the Millennial generation. Hispanic Millennials are a market segment that is often overlooked. A …

Angiotensin Ii As A Potential Regulator Of Inflammatory Cytokines In Inducing Hypertension In Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Khush Singh Aujla Jan 2012

Angiotensin Ii As A Potential Regulator Of Inflammatory Cytokines In Inducing Hypertension In Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Khush Singh Aujla

Honors Theses

The disease Systemic Lupus Erythematosus is a chronic inflammatory, autoimmune disorder that primarily affects women during their reproductive years. Women with SLE are at a greater risk of developing hypertension, which increases their risk of mortality from a cardiac related event. A proposed mechanism for SLE hypertension suggests that inflammation in the kidneys causes renal dysfunction, presumably resulting in less water excretion, increased plasma volume, and thus high blood pressure. This experiment tests the hypothesis that the T-cells from a mouse model of SLE hyper secrete the inflammatory cytokines IL-17, IL-10, and DFN- y, and are more sensitive to the …

Investigations Of Physiological Changes In Gulf Of Mexico Sharks During Acute Stress Events With Emphasis On The Atlantic Sharp Nose Shark, Wood Whittington Dale

Honors Theses

Blood samples were taken from seven species of shark found in the Gulf of Mexico. The species examined were Atlantic sharpnose (Rhizoprionodon terraenovae), blacknose (Carcharhinus acronotus), blacktip [Carcharhinus limbatus), bull {Carcharhinus leucas), finetooth {Carcharhinus isodon), spinner (Carcharhinus brevipinna), and tiger (Galeocerdo cuvier). The blood of 63 sharks was collected and analyzed for hematocrit, leukocrit, and plasma percent volume. Plasma osmolality values were also analyzed. Sharks were captured using hook and line (n=24) and longline (n=39). Hook and line captured sharks were submitted to a stress protocol described by Hoffmayer and Parsons (2001) and longline captured sharks were submitted to a …

An Investigation Of Host Variation In The Host-Parasite Interaction Of Sciurus Carolinensis And Cuterebra Emasculator, Miles Moore Debardeleben Jan 2012

An Investigation Of Host Variation In The Host-Parasite Interaction Of Sciurus Carolinensis And Cuterebra Emasculator, Miles Moore Debardeleben

Honors Theses

Within a population, susceptibility to parasitism may vary. Individuals possessing certain intrinsic or extrinsic traits are often more likely to be parasitized than individuals within that population that do not possess those certain traits. As a result, parasites can have profound effects of the population dynamics of theirs hosts. Much research has been done on the host-parasite interaction of the eastern grey squirrel {Sciurus caroUnensis) and the tree squirrel hot fly {Cuterebra emasculator). However, relatively little research has been done on host susceptibility to this parasite. Knowing that bot flies can lower reproductive success, reduce fitness, and cause death of …

The Effect Of Temperature And Turbidity On The Swimming Performance Of Golden Shiner (Notemigonus Crysoleucas)., Emily Katherine Hildebrandt Jan 2012

The Effects Of The Histidine-Alanine-Valine Peptide On The Dimerization Of Neural Cadherin, Ariel Rogers Jan 2012

The Effects Of The Histidine-Alanine-Valine Peptide On The Dimerization Of Neural Cadherin, Ariel Rogers

Honors Theses

Cadherins are calcium-dependent cell adhesion molecules whose general structure is characterized by three regions: a conserved carboxy-terminal cytoplasmic region, a transmembrane segment and an extracellular region that binds calcium. Cadherins mediate cell to cell adhesion by the formation of homophilic dimers between these extracellular regions, during which one cadherin molecule interacts with another cadherin molecule of the same type. The adhesive interface is a strand-crossover structure between two protomers from adjacent cells. The PA-strand detaches from its own protomer and crosses over to dock a critical tryptophan residue in a hydrophobic partner protomer. Disruption of the formation of the adhesive …
