Perceptions Of Identity And Blame Attribution In Sexual Harassment Scenarios, Avarie Lambert
Perceptions Of Identity And Blame Attribution In Sexual Harassment Scenarios, Avarie Lambert
Honors Theses
Sexual harassment is a widespread issue influenced by societal attitudes that stem from victim blaiming and rape myth acceptance. These perceptions are often shaped by the identities of the parties involved, however there is limited research on how gender and race influence blame attribution. The purpose of this study is to examine how different identities shape public perceptions of victims in sexual harassment scenarios. Through using a nationwide sample and survey experiment, participants were randomly assigned to receive one of eight different hypothetical scenarios that differed by the race and gender of the victim, and the gender of the perpetrator. …
Effects Of The Gravity Gradient On The Path Of 1i/‘Oumuamua, Hannah R. Richardson
Effects Of The Gravity Gradient On The Path Of 1i/‘Oumuamua, Hannah R. Richardson
Honors Theses
In October 2017, the asteroid 1I/’Oumuamua first passed into viewing range [1]. The asteroid is notable for being the first interstellar object to enter the solar system. 1I/’Oumuamua was also unusual in its geometry; it is thought to have an aspect ratio of 6:1 and a length of approximately 400 m [2] [3]. The asteroid was observed to experience a non-Keplerian acceleration estimated to be on the order of 1⇥10−6 m s2 . Several theories have been proposed for the cause of this acceleration, all of which are non-gravitational in nature: volatile outgassing, photon pressure, and solar winds [1][4]. However, …
Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Exoenzyme Y Enzymatic Activity Inhibits Exoenzyme S-Induced Caspase Activation But Not Cytotoxicity In Pulmonary Microvascular Endothelial Cells, Connor Holm
Honors Theses
Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) is the most common cause of ventilator-associated pneumonia in intensive care unit patients. P. aeruginosa utilizes a type III secretion system that injects exoenzymes U, S, T, and/or Y into the host cell cytosol. A majority of clinically isolated P. aeruginosa strains express ExoY often in combination with ExoU and ExoT, or ExoS and ExoT. Host signaling mechanisms in response to intoxication with individual exoenzymes have been extensively studied, yet little is known about host cell response to co-intoxication. In this study, pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (PMVECs) were infected with P. aeruginosa strains expressing different combinations …
Composition And Rich/Lean Loading-Dependent Density Measurements Of A Series Of Aqueous Ionic Amines For Co2 Capture, Claudia Nguyen
Composition And Rich/Lean Loading-Dependent Density Measurements Of A Series Of Aqueous Ionic Amines For Co2 Capture, Claudia Nguyen
Honors Theses
As climate change worsens worldwide, there is a drive to develop more efficient and sustainable methods to mitigate its impact through carbon capture methods like carbon dioxide scrubbing. Carbon scrubbing directly captures carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from industries or power plants before they are released into the environment. The CO2 captured can be utilized for various applications or can be stored underground. However, this method faces numerous challenges, such as the degradation of the solvent or corrosion of equipment. As a result, research has expanded to find a better medium to overcome these issues. In particular, aqueous ionic amines (AIA) …
Comparative Analysis Of Classical And Machine Learning Pathfinding Approaches, Miguel Gapud
Comparative Analysis Of Classical And Machine Learning Pathfinding Approaches, Miguel Gapud
Honors Theses
Pathfinding is an essential task for any autonomous robot. Graph-based classical pathfinding algorithms and machine learning approaches have both been used for this end, but they are often not compared against each other. An implementation of end-to-end (E2E) pathfinding using Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) and an Alexnet architecture is compared against an implementation of Hybrid A*. A digital twin in Unity3D is used as the testing environment with the Clearpath Dingo as the pathfinding robot. In machine learning, the robot is controlled using PPO through ROS-Noetic with a camera as its sensor. Hybrid A* and its controls are implemented directly …

Surveying The Effects Of In-Person And Word Of Mouth Appeals To Gen-Z On Fundraising Outcomes, Stephanie Huynh
Honors Theses
Fluctuations in consumer behavior and perceived disposable income are a concern for nonprofit budgeting. Even with recurring donor subscriptions, donations can be an unreliable source of income. As Gen Zers become more prevalent in the workforce, it is a matter of time until they form the majority of the donor pool. This study explored the efficacy of repetition as a fundraising tool in appealing to Gen Zers. The sample was Gen Z students at the University of South Alabama, and a voluntary exploratory quantitative survey was administered. 113 responses were gathered. Through analysis with Spearman’s correlations and descriptive statistics, it …
Toujours Beaucoup: Representations Of Childhood And Education In 20th Century French Literature And Cinema, Delaney Drury
Toujours Beaucoup: Representations Of Childhood And Education In 20th Century French Literature And Cinema, Delaney Drury
Honors Theses
The Third Republic’s reforms established France’s public education system on several foundational ideals: upholding republican values, resisting autocratic authorities, promoting critical thinking, and promoting personal liberty and freedom of thought. This project explores French literature and cinema with significant representations of education for the purpose of examining to what extent such ideals are upheld or undermined in their portrayals of education. Such an examination of French education and its underlying values is significant in such a time in history when France is experiencing a “contemporary crisis of republican schooling” (Sachs 179). Alongside the historical significance of such studies, the more …
Public Opinion And Judicial Decision-Making: A Relationship Explored Through Interviews With Local, State And Federal Judges Within Mobile County, Alabama, Bella Gin
Honors Theses
Civilians and legal scholars alike often speculate how judges rule and what contributes to their decision-making. Acknowledging this conundrum and combining it with my own interests in the legal field, I attempt to explore how some judges located within Mobile County perceive public opinion and what factors direct their rulings over their respective case dockets. Through seven, semi-structured interviews, I ask each judge a series of questions regarding their backgrounds, decision-making methodologies, thoughts on public opinion relevancy, and application of their approaches to their judgeships. Analysis of the interviewees’ responses reveals data that suggests the judges have a somewhat ambivalent …
Toxicity And Biodegradability Of Novel Boronium Vs Conventional Ammonium-Based Antimicrobial Compounds In Wastewater Treatment Systems, Noor Shalan
Honors Theses
Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are highly effective as disinfectants, herbicides, and pesticides; thus, overuse causes elevated levels of residual toxicity in domestic and industrial wastewater. QACs can be toxic to essential bacteria breaking down pollutants in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and can remain untreated in effluent, harming the environment, and contributing to antibiotic resistance, posing risks to human health. Novel boronium-based antimicrobial compounds have demonstrated efficacy in eliminating bacteria, fungi, and viruses. If the boronium compounds exhibit lower residual toxicity, they could offer a promising alternative to QACs. Because these compounds are still in development, their potential toxicity to the …

The Search For Slow Particles And Magnetic Monopoles With Nova, John Clark
Honors Theses
Singular magnetic poles, north or south, have been theorized to exist for hundreds of years. In the modern day, the elusive singular magnetic pole still remains undiscovered. The appearance of this particle would help confirm many Grand Unified Theories, GUTs, and revolutionize our understanding of some of the fundamental forces of the universe. Fermilab's NOvA collaboration is working on ways to screen and detect magnetic monopoles and other slow-moving particles coming from outer space alongside their main mission to study neutrinos. The aim of this work is to determine and improve the Far Detector’s efficiency at identifying slow moving particles. …
Comparing Online And In-Person Social Support And Its Effects On Suicidal Ideation, Alexander J. Potter
Comparing Online And In-Person Social Support And Its Effects On Suicidal Ideation, Alexander J. Potter
Honors Theses
According to the interpersonal theory of suicide, thwarted belonging and perceived burdensomeness are proximal causes of suicidal ideation (Van Orden et al., 2010). Studies show that a lack of social support can lead to higher levels of thwarted belonging and perceived burdensomeness (Sparks et al., 2023). This relationship between social support and suicidal ideation has been studied in the literature, but the relationship between online and in-person social support with suicidal ideation has not. The purpose of the current study is to examine the effects of in-person and online social support on different factors of the interpersonal theory of suicide. …

Ghosts In Glass: Ghost Crabs As Judges Of Glass Sand For Coastal Restoration, Emily Parrish
Ghosts In Glass: Ghost Crabs As Judges Of Glass Sand For Coastal Restoration, Emily Parrish
Honors Theses
Over 60% of the Gulf of Mexico coastline is actively eroding, which has resulted in thousands of miles of lost coastline over the last 100 years. This drastic loss of coastal land highlights the dire need for coastal restoration across the entirety of the Gulf Coast. A vital aspect of restoring these eroded areas is replenishing eroded substrate, traditionally conducted through offshore dredging of substrates which comes with high economic and ecological costs. Recycled glass sand may be able to fill this role and reduce our reliance on dredging while lowering the amount of glass waste entering landfills each year. …

The Effect Of A Peptide Targeting Ligand On Transfection Efficiency Of Polymeric Nanoparticles To Dendritic Cells, Anthony Radka
Honors Theses
Autoimmune diseases affect approximately 5-8% of the global population, leading to chronic symptoms, long-term treatment, and reduced quality of life. Current therapies primarily rely on lifelong administration of immunosuppressants, which are associated with severe side effects and heightened susceptibility to infections. This has spurred interest in cellular therapies that manipulate dendritic cells (DCs) effectively and can selectively treat these diseases. This work aims to improve the efficacy of dendritic cell-based therapies using cationic polymers that can electrostatically complex with nucleic acids, forming nanoparticles referred to as polyplexes, that can deliver therapeutic nucleic acid cargo. These particles are a favorable alternative …
Development And Characterization Of A Pro-Angiogenic Peptide Amphiphile For Deep Dermal Burn Healing Via Spray Delivery, Loria Dimartino
Development And Characterization Of A Pro-Angiogenic Peptide Amphiphile For Deep Dermal Burn Healing Via Spray Delivery, Loria Dimartino
Honors Theses
Severe burns and other dermatological injuries are frequently accompanied by a range of comorbidities and aesthetic challenges that patients must contend with. The complexity of burn care is exacerbated by the lack of a standardized surgical protocol, as treatment strategies are tailored to individual patient factors, including overall health status, wound size and location, as well as the expertise and resources available to the surgical team. Most commonly, deep dermal burns are treated through grafting, which effectively covers the injury site, but requires the creation of a second wound on the body of approximately the same size. This produces a …
The Numerical Method For Finding All The Zeros Of A Function F (X) On An Interval [A,B], Franissa Simon
The Numerical Method For Finding All The Zeros Of A Function F (X) On An Interval [A,B], Franissa Simon
Honors Theses
In this study, we develop a simple mathematical method for finding all the roots of a function on a specified interval. Existing classical numerical methods, including the Bisection Method, Secant Method, and Newton Method, cannot find all the zeros of a function f (x) on an interval [a,b]. Popular numerical root solvers like Matlab’s ‘fzero’, Maple’s ‘fsolve’, and SageMath’s ‘find_root’ typically yield only a single zero. This thesis explores a proposed interval computation bisection method, a systematic approach based on the traditional Bisection Method and interval computation. Unlike traditional bisection, which relies on the intermediate value theorem, this approach uses …
Fouling-Resistant Voltammetric Xylazine Sensors For Detection Of The Street Drug “Tranq”, Ann Holland Wemple
Fouling-Resistant Voltammetric Xylazine Sensors For Detection Of The Street Drug “Tranq”, Ann Holland Wemple
Honors Theses
As the opioid crisis continues to wreak havoc on a national and global scale, it is increasingly critical to develop methodologies to detect the most dangerous of these drugs as fentanyl and its derivatives have orders of magnitude higher potency than morphine. Recently, the scientific challenge for chemical detection of fentanyl and its derivatives has been complicated by both the constantly increasing synthetic variations of the drug as well as the expanded use of adulterants. One tragically consequential example is the nocuous street drug known as “Tranq” which combines fentanyl or a fentanyl derivative with the veterinary sedative Rompun®, chemically …

Technical Difficulties: An Investigation Of Problematic Social Media Usage And Well-Being Of Emerging Adults, Sarah Swan
Honors Theses
Grounded in previous scholarship investigating the relationship between social media use and psychoemotional outcomes, this study conceptualizes and tests a comprehensive model that constellates predictive factors (i.e., time spent, platforms selected, purposes of use, and emotional regulation abilities) and negative behavioral and emotional outcomes (i.e., addiction and emotional affect), specifically among emerging adults (ages 18-29). A survey of 591 respondents revealed that high usage of certain platforms (i.e., Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook), alongside individual emotional regulation abilities and passivity of social media use, predicts higher levels of addiction and negative emotional outcomes. Additional findings indicate significant differences in social media …
A Comprehensive Performance Comparison Of Machine Learning And Federated Learning For Intrusion Detection In Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks Using Can-Bus Data, Tim Leonhardt
Honors Theses
Federated Learning (FL) is a Machine Learning (ML) approach that decentralizes training across distributed devices, eliminating the need to centralize data. Unlike traditional ML, where models are trained on aggregated data, FL sends a global model to multiple nodes for local training, with updated parameters transmitted back to the server for aggregation. This process preserves data privacy, making FL ideal for sensitive applications like cybersecurity. However, FL introduces challenges such as data heterogeneity, communication overhead, and difficulties in achieving model convergence, which can impact performance.
This study investigates a fundamental assumption in ML and FL research: that the superior performance …
Sliding Window Method For Simulating Action Potentials In Axons, Hayden Reed
Sliding Window Method For Simulating Action Potentials In Axons, Hayden Reed
Honors Theses
ABSTRACT Hodgkin and Huxley’s nonlinear partial differential equations model the excitation and propagation of action potentials in neurons, and there have been numerous attempts at finding the best numerical solution method. This thesis proposes a novel approach to solving these equations: the Sliding Window method, in which a fixed sub-interval is found through capturing the signal’s head and tail. The system is then solved on the sub-interval instead of the entire interval. Using the Sliding Window technique also involves implementing the backward and forward Euler methods and the finite difference method. It will be demonstrated that, in utilizing the Sliding …

Mathematical Melodies: The Exploration Of Music Using Fourier Signal Analysis, Courtney Francois
Honors Theses
Upon initial inspection, mathematics and music appear to be distinct disciplines lacking any connections to one another. However, many complex intersections lie beneath the surface. This paper seeks to explore these connections through the analysis of the Fourier series and the Fourier transformation of musical sound signals. Orthogonal functions of various frequencies are used to approximate and recover sound signals. Following the examination of the basis of Fourier signal analysis, MATLAB is utilized to visualize the connectedness of mathematics and music through sound signals from varied musical instruments and by performing Fourier signal analysis to the sound signals. Then, the …
A Survey On Faculty Summer Compensation In Accounting, Abby Box
A Survey On Faculty Summer Compensation In Accounting, Abby Box
Honors Theses
Many colleges and universities have paid faculty approximately one-ninth of their annual base salary to teach a summer course for years. Since more accounting schools and departments have become separately accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), there has been increased pressure to increase research output. Additionally, many states have seen reductions in higher education funding. Therefore, universities have tried to use summer school as a new funding source by increasing enrollment minimums in summer classes and reducing summer school pay rates for faculty. This study incorporates a 26-question survey sent to 580 directors and chairs …
Cellular Telemetry For Real-Time River Flow Velocity Data From Fluvial Acoustic Tomography Loggers, Joshua Lee Seymour
Cellular Telemetry For Real-Time River Flow Velocity Data From Fluvial Acoustic Tomography Loggers, Joshua Lee Seymour
Honors Theses
Streamflow is a critical element in understanding watershed processes and the effects of land use on those processes because it is the primary medium through which water, sediment, nutrients, organic material, thermal energy, and aquatic species move. Fluvial Acoustic Tomography (FAT) systems offer accurate direct measurements of river section-averaged flow velocity by measuring reciprocal acoustic travel times between at least two acoustic nodes positioned on opposite riverbanks. However, similar to many in-situ sensors used in estuarine and riverine environments, FAT loggers require manual data retrieval, which is time-consuming, labor-intensive, and limits real-time access and increases maintenance costs. This project presents …
Quasipseudometric Value Functions With Dense Rewards, Khadichabonu Valieva
Quasipseudometric Value Functions With Dense Rewards, Khadichabonu Valieva
Honors Theses
Goal-conditioned reinforcement learning (GCRL) serves as an extension of reinforce- ment learning (RL) that focuses on goals that can be adjusted, making it useful for many applications, especially in complex robotics tasks. Recent research has established that the optimal value function of GCRL, denoted as Q∗(s, a, g), has a quasipseudometric structure. This finding has led to the development of targeted neural architectures that respect such a structure. However, prior analyses have predominantly focused on sparse reward settings, which are known to increase challenges related to sample complexity. In this work, I with the guidance of my advisor show that …
Cache-Augmented Generation In Rag Pipelines: Fast And Memory-Efficient Approach To Multi-Agent Knowledge Query Systems, Yaju Gopal Shrestha
Cache-Augmented Generation In Rag Pipelines: Fast And Memory-Efficient Approach To Multi-Agent Knowledge Query Systems, Yaju Gopal Shrestha
Honors Theses
This thesis presents an implementation and evaluation of Cache-Augmented Generation (CAG) for knowledge query systems, building upon the approach introduced by Chan et al. (2024). Traditional Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems (Lewis et al., 2020) face challenges including high latency, excessive memory usage, and complex infrastructure requirements. By implementing a cache-augmented architecture that preloads relevant knowledge and eliminates real-time retrieval, our approach significantly improves response time while reducing resource requirements. The research demonstrates the effectiveness of CAG through a comprehensive implementation for The University of Southern Mississippi's chatbot system, achieving a 49.02% improvement in response time compared to traditional RAG approaches. …
