Binary Solid/Liquid Equilibrium Of Mixtures Of Thermally Robust Salts And Molecular Compounds For Use As Heat Transfer Fluids, Jared Ridge Mathews May 2025

Binary Solid/Liquid Equilibrium Of Mixtures Of Thermally Robust Salts And Molecular Compounds For Use As Heat Transfer Fluids, Jared Ridge Mathews

Honors Theses

Fossil fuels, contributors to climate change that may bear catastrophic consequences, power the entire world. The human species is almost entirely dependent on fossil fuels for energy, but other sources of renewable and environmentally friendly energy must be developed. Concentrated solar power (CSP) is a promising source of renewable energy with hampered potential—better heat transfer fluids (HTFs) are needed for it to be economically feasible. Currently, the HTFs in industrial use are predominantly either synthetic oils or nitrate-based molten salts. Synthetic oils are only stable up to 400 °C, and molten salts often have high melting temperatures, making them prone …

The oval design was ultimately excluded due to practical fabrication limitations. The rectangular and hexagonal designs were fabricated using recycled materials and tested under the most extreme environmental conditions derived from years …

Ritt’S Theorem And The Chebyshev Polynomials, Eric Neuhaus May 2025

Ritt’S Theorem And The Chebyshev Polynomials, Eric Neuhaus

Honors Theses

We explore polynomial composition through Ritt’s Theorem and mondromy groups. J.F. Ritt asked the question of when a polynomial can be written as the composition of two other polynomials of smaller, nontrivial degree. Ritt’s Theorem provides a method for determining whether or not a polynomial is composite by observing the actions of its associated monodromy group, a group of permutations acting upon the roots of a given polynomial. In this work, we study the monodromy groups of the Chebyshev polynomials of the first and second kinds to uncover their compositional properties.

Exploring The Role Of The Id2 And Rab11fip3 Pathway In X-Linked Chronic Granulomatous Disease (Xcgd) Through Comparative Gene Expression Analysis, Kaili Coenen May 2025

Exploring The Role Of The Id2 And Rab11fip3 Pathway In X-Linked Chronic Granulomatous Disease (Xcgd) Through Comparative Gene Expression Analysis, Kaili Coenen

Honors Theses

X-linked chronic granulomatous disease (XCGD) is a debilitating immunodeficiency disorder primarily affecting men. The disease results from mutations in the CYBB gene on the X chromosome, which encodes the GP91^PHOX protein responsible for electron transfer from NADPH to molecular oxygen. Despite the identification of the CYBB mutation, the pathological mechanism underlying the reduction in reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in XCGD remains unclear. We hypothesized that comparative gene expression analysis, combined with pathway analysis, could identify genes and signaling pathways contributing to reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in XCGD. In this study, we analyzed gene expression data from four …

Sensory Awareness In Architectural Design And Construction: A Guide To Inclusion And Hospitality For All, Morgan Harwell May 2025

Sensory Awareness In Architectural Design And Construction: A Guide To Inclusion And Hospitality For All, Morgan Harwell

Honors Theses

Modern approaches to architectural design and construction have gravitated toward elegance, glossiness, and over exaggeration of a bright environment through materials such as marble, glass, white paint, and fluorescent lighting. While these choices can be alluring, their impact on individuals with disabilities and sensory processing disorders is typically dismissed. This study explores the intersection of architectural elements — such as lighting, noise, scent, and spatial organization — and sensory overload in disabled individuals. Through a detailed literature review, education of architectural principles, and incorporation of building techniques, this study proposes a computer-generated three-dimensional model of a shopping center. The primary …

The Relationship Between Sense Of Agency And Perceived Stigma In Those With Cognitive Disabilities, Scarlet S. Pardue May 2025

The Relationship Between Sense Of Agency And Perceived Stigma In Those With Cognitive Disabilities, Scarlet S. Pardue

Honors Theses

The focus population of this study is those with cognitive disabilities, which limit in some way a person’s ability to complete mental tasks, such as communication, planning, or remembering. The primary purpose is to focus on the participants' sense of agency and perceived stigma. The Sense of Agency Scale (SoA) measures a participant’s consciously perceived control over their mind, body, and the immediate environment. The Perceived Disability Social Stigma Scale (PDSS) measures to what degree participants believe that people with disabilities are stigmatized in their respective communities. Confirmatory research into these two variables offers an interesting insight into how the …

“How Close To The Edge We Are”: Ecologically Reading The Frontiers Of Joan Didion’S Early Nonfiction, Mia R. Speller May 2025

“How Close To The Edge We Are”: Ecologically Reading The Frontiers Of Joan Didion’S Early Nonfiction, Mia R. Speller

Honors Theses

Joan Didion’s work is heavily regional and rooted in place, whether that be the place about which she writes or, by contrast, the place she leaves in order to do her writing. This place-based context takes root in many American ideologies and mythos, like that of the frontier mentality and golden dream. For this reason, exploring Didion’s use of natural metaphor and description as she discusses various cultural phenomena is essential to understanding the layers of her social critiques of 1960’s and 1970’s American culture, especially as they reflect on the failures of the frontier ideology. Further, looking at her …

Synthesis Of Single Chain Polymer Nanoparticle Networks By Reinitiating Raft Polymerization, Dallas Donovan May 2025

Synthesis Of Single Chain Polymer Nanoparticle Networks By Reinitiating Raft Polymerization, Dallas Donovan

Honors Theses

Hydrogel materials, which are polymer networks comprised mostly of water, hold significant promise for biomedical applications due to their compatibility with biological systems. Conventional hydrogel materials are often brittle and weak, but most applications in biomedical systems require materials to be strong and tough. The topology of a polymer network dictates its mechanical properties. An important strategy for designing tougher hydrogels is the release of stored length, such as from the unfolding of polyprotein cross-linkers. Inspired by the success of the strategy, we report progress towards a fully synthetic design using single chain nanoparticles (SCNPs) into a hydrogel. SCNPs, which …

Sexism In Syntax: Language And Its Relationship With Female Leadership, Kyle Rains May 2025

Sexism In Syntax: Language And Its Relationship With Female Leadership, Kyle Rains

Honors Theses

Despite a global trend towards more equal gender representation, not every country has improved at the same pace or to the same level. This study investigates language as a potential tool for better understanding the differences between countries regarding the presence of female managers. By using language as a tool, I arrive at two primary results: (i) pronoun drop is significantly and inversely associated with the presence of female managers, but gendered language structures have little association, and (ii) a gender intensity index can produce misleading results. These results suggest that language structures, such as pronoun drop, which are associated …

Perceptions Of Power And Consent: The Role Of Gender, Race, And Sexual Orientation In Assessments Of Victimhood In High School Student-Teacher Relationships, India Campbell

Honors Theses

Sexual abuse, in all of its many forms, has been a controversial topic for centuries. This project looks at a specific subset of sexual abuse: high school student-teacher assaults. Victims of sexual abuse often face barriers to justice. This project addresses several demographic barriers. Research has shown that people of color and members of the queer community are typically reluctant to report due to police and societal perceptions of these groups. Teenagers face additional challenges, such as not know how their peers, parents, school, or community will react. Additionally, their abuser is an authority figure, meaning that these victims could …

Role Of Evolutionarily Conserved G4 Structures In Enhancer-Promotor Interactions, Shahem Alqudah May 2025

Role Of Evolutionarily Conserved G4 Structures In Enhancer-Promotor Interactions, Shahem Alqudah

Honors Theses

Gene regulation is governed by complex networks of interactions between enhancers and promoters, regions of the genome that are typically distant from one another yet functionally linked through chromatin looping. Recent research has revealed the significant role of Gquadruplexes (G4s) in facilitating these interactions. This thesis explores the role of long Gquadruplex regions (LG4s) in enhancer–promoter communication, proposing that these regions mediate physical interactions between enhancers and their target promoters through direct G4:G4 interactions. Using a chromatin conformation capture (EQuIP-seq), electrophoretic mobility shift assays (EMSA), and luciferase reporter assays, the study demonstrates that LG4s may drive gene expression by promoting …

Reap What You Sow: Using Historic Enrollment Data To Strategically Recruit Students, Hayden Cherry

Honors Theses

As the higher education landscape continues to become more competitive, adapting our marketing strategies to affordably recruit students will be imperative to maintaining both relevance and financial stability. Research has predicted an increase in tension as institutions weather the enrollment cliff, a period characterized by a steep decline in the number of college-age students in the United States. While this research is useful in informing our outlook in the coming years, there is little research surrounding the most efficacious methods for recruiting college students. Using data from Mississippi State University's Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness on student status and …

Using Eeg To Measure Attentional Spreading Across Objects, Dawson L. Green, Michael Pratte May 2025

Using Eeg To Measure Attentional Spreading Across Objects, Dawson L. Green, Michael Pratte

Honors Theses

Abstract: Attention may not solely be restricted to a spatial area or a feature of an object, but rather can “spread” across all parts of an object in space, enhancing the processing of its features collectively (Duncan, 1984). This phenomenon suggests that attention operates at the level of whole objects, enhancing the representation of all features associated with the attended object while suppressing competing stimuli. Building on this object-based framework, the present thesis examines the functional and neural dissociation between attention and awareness using steady-state visually evoked potentials (SSVEPs) as a frequency-tagging method in EEG. Leveraging the high temporal resolution …

Reversing Residential Segregation In Richmond: Recommendations For A More Inclusive Future, Jacob Ellis May 2025

Reversing Residential Segregation In Richmond: Recommendations For A More Inclusive Future, Jacob Ellis

Honors Theses

Cities are dynamic, evolving reflections of our societies. The current built environment of Richmond, Virginia, is shaped by its stored history with zoning, which is inextricably linked to race. Since 1927, the City of Richmond, Virginia has had some form of a zoning ordinance in place, intended to create a system of de facto residential segregation. While the first zoning ordinance primarily focused on separating residential and industrial spaces in response to the City Beautiful movement and early 20th-century progressive ideals, zoning in Richmond quickly became a weapon of segregation and racism. As the former capital of the Confederacy, Richmond …

Evaluating The Role Of Institutional Size And Selectivity In Determining Social Belonging, Christian Herald May 2025

Evaluating The Role Of Institutional Size And Selectivity In Determining Social Belonging, Christian Herald

Honors Theses

This research study examines the role of institutional selectivity and size in facilitating feelings of belonging for racially marginalized students in predominantly white college campuses. Unlike past research, which has focused its methodology primarily on large research institutions, I seek to research small liberal arts institutions in addition to larger colleges for a comparative effect to assess differences in campus structure and its implications for belonging. I use Washington and Lee, Randolph-Macon College, the University of Virginia, and James Madison University as case studies for examining differences in belonging between small liberal arts institutions and large research institutions, using quantitative …

Chrysanthèmes Et Camélias: Le Japonisme Littéraire Au Xixᵉ Siècle Et Aujourd’Hui, Emiko Iguchi May 2025

Chrysanthèmes Et Camélias: Le Japonisme Littéraire Au Xixᵉ Siècle Et Aujourd’Hui, Emiko Iguchi

Honors Theses

The Impact Of Remittances On Children’S Educational Outcomes: The Case Of India, Neha Reddy Kalwala May 2025

The Impact Of Remittances On Children’S Educational Outcomes: The Case Of India, Neha Reddy Kalwala

Honors Theses

This paper investigates whether children in Indian households receiving more remittances have better educational outcomes. India is the world’s largest recipient of remittances and is characterized by a unique socioeco- nomic and demographic context that makes any educational improvements or disparities particularly impactful on global education metrics. Using panel data from the India Human Development Survey, I employ OLS and logit regressions with household fixed effects, a difference-in-differences strategy, and a Heckman selection model. Two measures of educational outcomes are analyzed: weekly hours spent at school and school enrollment. Findings suggest that an increase in remittances leads to a higher …

Biophysical Characterization Of Thermophilic Branched-Chain Amino Acid Periplasmic Binding Protein From Thermotoga Maritima, Sky Marsicano

Honors Theses

Members of the periplasmic binding protein superfamily are involved in the selective passage of ligands through bacterial cell membranes. The hyperthermophilic eubacterium Thermotoga maritima encodes a putative periplasmic branched chain amino acid binding protein (TM1135). The gene was cloned into pET21a(+), overexpressed in Escherichia coli, purified using Ni-NTA chromatography, and confirmed with SDS-PAGE and MALDI mass spectrometry. Biophysical characterization of the protein was performed with fluorescence spectroscopy, absorbance spectroscopy, and circular dichroism experiments to investigate structural stability and ligand binding ability. Using circular dichroism, we demonstrate that TM1135 binds to the branched chain amino acids isoleucine, leucine, and valine, and …

The Assizes Of Romania: Feudal Law And The Latin East, Caleb Silvergleid May 2025

The Assizes Of Romania: Feudal Law And The Latin East, Caleb Silvergleid

Honors Theses

I conduct a comparative analysis of the Assizes of Romania (c. 1335) in two key spheres of law - the law of the feudal contract and the law of inheritance. I do so by placing the AR alongside a few legal traditions that might plausibly have influenced it: the customary law of different regions in northern France as recorded in the Coutumes de Beauvaisis (c. 1281-3) and the Summa de legibus Normannie (c. 1254-8), those of the Kingdom of Lombardy in Northern Italy in the Libri Feudorum (c. 1120-1200), and the collection of the Crusader law of the Latin East …

A Comparative Analysis Of Nf-Κb1 Gene Regulatory Sequence Methylation In Normotensive And Hypertensive Kenyans, Aaryan Barlas Piracha May 2025

A Comparative Analysis Of Nf-Κb1 Gene Regulatory Sequence Methylation In Normotensive And Hypertensive Kenyans, Aaryan Barlas Piracha

Honors Theses

Accounting for the majority of deaths worldwide, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) present the greatest health challenge of the twenty-first century. Specifically, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) exceed all other NCDs in annual deaths and especially affect low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Hypertension, being the primary risk factor for CVD, affects over 75% of adults in LMICs due to inadequate health care and preventative measures. Additionally, epigenetic modifications of DNA are important mechanisms that regulate gene expression; DNA methylation, in particular, affects cytosine residues in cytosine-phosphate-guanine (CpG) islands on regulatory sequences. Previous research in our laboratory analyzed percent methylation at 8 different CpG islands …

Decoding Bacterial Resilience: Srnas And Sigma Factors In Stress Adaptation And Persistence Of Salmonella, Anita Nguyen May 2025

Decoding Bacterial Resilience: Srnas And Sigma Factors In Stress Adaptation And Persistence Of Salmonella, Anita Nguyen

Honors Theses

Small RNAs (sRNAs) are noncoding RNA molecules in bacteria that function primarily to regulate gene expression, including those associated with stress. The Borchert Lab has identified 173 sRNAs and > 500 sRNAs that are responsive to desiccation and carbon starvation (c-starvation), respectively. Prokaryotic transcription involves an RNA Polymerase (RNAP) that transcribes DNA into RNA. RNAP involves sigma factors, which recognize promoters for the initial steps of RNA synthesis. The Borchert Lab has determined that there are significant overlaps between sRNAs expressed in cells subjected to both short-term durations and long-term durations of carbon starvation. Salmonella enterica serovars can have outbreaks associated …
