Delivery Of Antiviral Sirna With Gold Nanoparticle Against Dengue Virus, Amanda J. Cooley
Delivery Of Antiviral Sirna With Gold Nanoparticle Against Dengue Virus, Amanda J. Cooley
Honors Theses
The goal of this study was to use specific small-interfering RNA (siRNA) sequences to target the E gene of the Dengue virus serotype 2 (DENV-2). It was predicted that this targeted binding of siRNA would prevent subsequent translation of the E gene protein, as well as virion production in infected cells. Due to the instability of the antiviral siRNA, the siRNA was conjugated to gold nano-particles (AuNP) in order to provide stability during delivery to the infected Vero cells. Cells were transfected with siRNA-AuNP complexes prior to DENV-2 infection. The siRNA-AuNP complexes tested included two different siRNA sequences (at varying …
Holy Experiments And Unholy Acts: Sex, Law, And Religion In Colonial Massachusetts, Rhode Island, And Pennsylvania, Anna L. Todd
Holy Experiments And Unholy Acts: Sex, Law, And Religion In Colonial Massachusetts, Rhode Island, And Pennsylvania, Anna L. Todd
Honors Theses
This thesis uses the law codes and court cases of sexual misconduct from the colonies of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania to determine the degree to which the colonies’ stated understandings of the relationship between church and state were practically applied to the governing of their societies as well as how that understanding affected the daily lives of colonial women. Thus, this analysis uses the lens of female sexual deviance to determine the degree to which church and state were integrated or separated within the three colonies.
Chapter 1 discuses the law as it was written. It examines the sexual …
The Characterization Of Aunp-Pei Conjugates For Sirna Delivery To Cancer Cells, Albert J. Nosser
The Characterization Of Aunp-Pei Conjugates For Sirna Delivery To Cancer Cells, Albert J. Nosser
Honors Theses
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death for people in the United States. Despite the numerous cancer treatments available, many of these chemotherapy treatments cause negative side effects such as hair and weight loss. With this in mind, in the past 15 years, researchers have discovered a mechanism known as RNA interference, which can be used to control certain genes and their activity. This mechanism is based on the function of siRNA molecules, which can be inserted into cells.(12) These siRNA molecules can be manipulated to target and eliminate specific cancer cells. However, these siRNA molecules are normally …
Instrument-Specific Music Performance Anxiety, Aaron L. Manning
Instrument-Specific Music Performance Anxiety, Aaron L. Manning
Honors Theses
For the musician, the occurrence of Music Performance Anxiety is a certainty. The extent, severity, and type of symptom of Music Performance Anxiety experienced vary depending on the performer. The instrument’s role in Music Performance Anxiety, however, might also be a factor in the type of symptom experienced by a performer. Does the type of instrument played lend itself to certain physical symptoms of Music Performance Anxiety? By studying the students of the University of Southern Mississippi’s School of Music, this thesis explores the relationship between instrument types and physical symptoms of Music Performance Anxiety. Its ultimate goal is to …
U.S. Gaap Versus Ifrs: Reconciling Revenue Recognition Principles In The Software Industry, Jason T. Babington
U.S. Gaap Versus Ifrs: Reconciling Revenue Recognition Principles In The Software Industry, Jason T. Babington
Honors Theses
In the world of financial accounting, a demand for universal standards exists. The two primary standard setting boards, The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB), have made some strides in developing universal standards, but they still are not fully reconciled in the area of software revenue recognition. The main reason the two standards are not reconciled in the area of software revenue recognition is that a difference exists in the critical event between the standards. The critical event refers to the exact time a company recognizes revenue on its books. The purpose of the …

While tracing the development of copyright I also examine the implications occurring on the freedom of speech as technological advances create more changes in copyright law.
Built On Friendship: A Study Of Formal And Informal Business Culture In Carbondale, Illinois, Sarah E. Depuy
Built On Friendship: A Study Of Formal And Informal Business Culture In Carbondale, Illinois, Sarah E. Depuy
Honors Theses
Business practices in urban centers have garnered much of the research and interest by anthropologists, sociologists, and economists with very little focus on small business communities in rural areas. In this paper I explored the social connections and relationships between business owners in the region of Southern Illinois and their communities and the ways in which they integrate their public and private lives. To do this, I interviewed members of the formal, semi-formal, informal, and online business communities in Carbondale, Illinois. For my analysis, I used a variety of sources including Claudia Strauss' Partly Fragmented, Partly Integrated: An Anthropological …

The Investigation of Adaptation: A Creative Perception of Collegiate Behavioral Responses
As a collaborative team, we created a short graphic novel in the Italian style “fumetti.” This style of comic design uses actual photography instead of hand drawn or computer generated images. Despite that we are both students in the sciences, we decided to collaborate on a creative project. Our intent was to develop something unique that could showcase our abilities and interests outside of the …

If You Build It, They Will Come: A Study Of Imperial Design In Victorian Britain, Scarlett A. Jones
Honors Theses
The Crystal Palace (1851) and Paddington Station (1854) utilized imperial design in their construction as a tool to infuse the British public with pride in the empire. This study considered how the buildings were discussed in the press and other descriptive materials, such as guidebooks and architectural critiques to provide a general perception of how imperial propaganda utilized descriptions of imperial design to garner support for the empire. The study concluded that the impact of imperial design as propaganda for the empire was influenced by the function of the buildings. Attitudes towards imperial design varied, hinting at a division in …
Contemporary Hollywood And The Attention Economy, Caitlin Falco
Contemporary Hollywood And The Attention Economy, Caitlin Falco
Honors Theses
This thesis had two goals: to explore the transformation of Hollywood from the 1930s to present, and to investigate how Contemporary Hollywood functions in a growing attention economy. Evident in the types of films that it produces as well as its evolving industrial structure, Contemporary Hollywood significantly differs from the Classical Hollywood of the 1930s. New digital technologies like surround sound and computer-generated imagery (CGI) have allowed studios to create a different type of film like the blockbuster and to have more extensive control over their films. Additionally, growing exhibition and distribution platforms have also fundamentally altered the industrial landscape …

Visual Branding In Graphic Design, Leslie E. Kirk
Visual Branding In Graphic Design, Leslie E. Kirk
Honors Theses
Brands are all around us - no matter where we go, no matter what we do. As consumers, we are bombarded by images of logos and advertising campaigns every day. However, we rarely think about the process by which brands enter our lives. Before any product is ever produced or sold, it must first be branded. Every idea, from initial sketches to patented logos, supports a branding strategy, or the decisions a production team has made about what will drive a consumer to choose their brand over that of their competitors.
One problem small companies face when trying to get …

Changing The Nature Of The Beast: An Analysis Of Significant Variations From Madame De Beaumont’S La Belle Et La Bête In Disney’S Beauty And The Beast, Heather A. Stevens
Changing The Nature Of The Beast: An Analysis Of Significant Variations From Madame De Beaumont’S La Belle Et La Bête In Disney’S Beauty And The Beast, Heather A. Stevens
Honors Theses
Madame Jeanne-Marie LePrince de Beaumont wrote and published La Belle et La Bête while working as a governess and educator in 1757. She told the tale to a young female audience as a means of teaching important life lessons. Walt Disney’s animated film Beauty and the Beast, released in 1991, is clearly inspired by Beaumont’s story, yet Disney makes many alterations to her characters. This thesis locates and analyzes these changes, arguing that they greatly alter the message of Beaumont’s story from one that is empowering to women to one that is harmful and ultimately anti-woman. This thesis also examines …

Behavorial Lateralization Of Pectoral Fin Rubbing Researched In 27 Identified Bottlenose Dolphins, Brittany R. Poelma
Honors Theses
This thesis takes a look at the behavioral lateralization of handedness present or not present within the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) population housed at the Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences. Dolphins and humans share similar brain structures in that the brain is split into hemispheres that allow an individual to present behaviorally dominate features on different sides of their body. This type of split brain structure allows for a phenomenon known as handedness, where one hand presents dominant motor control. For dolphins, their “hand” is their pectoral fin. This thesis looked at a managed care population to investigate …
The Persistence Of Calvinism And Arminianism In The Southern Baptist Convention, Brett M. Rushing
The Persistence Of Calvinism And Arminianism In The Southern Baptist Convention, Brett M. Rushing
Honors Theses
The Southern Baptist Convention is the largest Protestant denomination in the world. For over 150 years, the Convention has grown throughout, not only the southern United States, but throughout the world. Within this denomination, though, two opposing belief strands coexist. Those two strands are Calvinism and Arminianism. The researcher investigates why these two strands coexist and have not led to a schism within the denomination. The researcher also looks at if the two strands will cause a split at some point, or if the issue of the two is a non-issue to most.
The Relation Between Language And Social Skills In Children With Down Syndrome: Examination Of Pressure Equalization Tube Placement During The Critical Developmental Period, Brandi M. Ellis
Honors Theses
The current study examined the relation among status regarding placement of pressure equalization tubes (PET), expressive language, receptive language, and social skills in children with Down syndrome. Previous research has documented the importance of PET placement for children with Down syndrome who suffer from chronic otitis media during the critical developmental period for language —not only to treat ear infections but also to prevent permanent damage leading to hearing loss. For the current study, the critical developmental period was defined as birth to 36 months. Parents and teachers of three children with Down syndrome (ages 12 to 15 years) completed …
Disagreeable, Villainous, And Wimpy: The Child As Antihero In Burnett, Colfer, And Kinney, Blakely J. Owens
Disagreeable, Villainous, And Wimpy: The Child As Antihero In Burnett, Colfer, And Kinney, Blakely J. Owens
Honors Theses
Although children’s literature is often dismissed as largely didactic and supportive of entrenched power structures, an examination of the antihero’s development in children’s literature reveals the genre’s complexity and subtle challenges of social mores. Critics focus extensive attention on the redemption of a less-than-ideal character from social deviancy to normalcy in fiction for young readers, but more rarely do they discuss those characters that remain static in their lack of heroic qualities and fail as role models for children. The on-going discussion on conventional subgenres like the school story does not often include texts that subvert the form with bullying …
How Do Relationship Labels Affect Partner Treatment And Relationship Status Perceptions?, Katie Golub
How Do Relationship Labels Affect Partner Treatment And Relationship Status Perceptions?, Katie Golub
Honors Theses
The present research examined which terms are most used by college students to define relationships, and how these various terms prime or affect partner treatment and relationship status perceptions. Once primed with the labels ¿hooking-up,¿ ¿exclusive¿ or ¿boyfriend/girlfriend,¿ it was hypothesized that public displays of affection, commitment, jealousy and sociosexuality would influence partner treatment. The results indicate that being primed with various relationship labels does influence public displays of affection. This priming does not influence jealousy, and it influences commitment on some occasions. The data collected can further our understanding of relationship dynamics among college students by differentiating between various …
Drug Trafficking Related Violence And Corruption Among Specific Populations In Mexico, Matthew B. Courtney
Drug Trafficking Related Violence And Corruption Among Specific Populations In Mexico, Matthew B. Courtney
Honors Theses
The trade of illegal narcotics through Mexico has resulted in the rise of powerful and organized criminal businesses that are not afraid to bribe, or kill, any who cross them. This has caused a dramatic increase in violent crime and government official corruption. This document will begin by defining these organizations and examining their creation. Next the violence caused by these organizations will be analytically categorized in order to better understand the criminal's motivations and tactics. This study will examine current data to determine which populations are more prone to violent crime or corruption by looking at the victims relationship …
Who Says I Should Leave? Factors Determining The Decision To Leave Home During Disasters, Vondragas J. Smalley
Who Says I Should Leave? Factors Determining The Decision To Leave Home During Disasters, Vondragas J. Smalley
Honors Theses
In an effort to minimize casualties during natural catastrophes, specifically hurricanes, researchers have found that risk perception, socioeconomic status, and past evacuation experience are important determinants in evacuation behavior. This study argues that these factors as well as race are important determinants in the decision of individuals to evacuate in the face of natural disasters. My investigation employs chi-square analysis and cross tabulation to determine the importance of these factors. The findings indicate that these hypotheses may impact the decision of residents to evacuate in the face of natural disasters and warrant further study by those doing evacuation behavior research.

Effects Of Age On Induced Glaucoma In An In Vivo Rat Model, Robert Cox
Effects Of Age On Induced Glaucoma In An In Vivo Rat Model, Robert Cox
Honors Theses
Previous in vitro studies from this lab have demonstrated that injection of a hypertonic saline solution into the episcleral vein of the rat’s eye mimics the effect of glaucoma. However, the age of the rat related to the amount of cell loss in the retina ganglion cell (RGC) layer is unknown. To address this issue, we propose to analyze the correlation of age and cell loss between 3-6 month and 1-year-old Long Evan rats. When inducing glaucoma in the Long Evan rats, the left eye in each rat was left untreated and used as an internal control. In the right …
Crizotinib: A Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor, Graham Mclaren
Crizotinib: A Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor, Graham Mclaren
Honors Theses
Crizotinib is a small molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitor that is currently being marketed by Pfizer under the trade name Xalkori®. After its development in 2005, an appropriate target was discovered in 2007. By 2011 the FDA had approved crizotinib for use in patients with ALK+ non small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). ALK+ NSCLC is caused by a genetic mutation that truncates and flips a section of the EML4 gene and attaches it to a section of the ALK gene. The result is the EML4-ALK oncogene. The resulting protein from this mutation is capable of undergoing ligand independent dimerization, …
