Exploring The Influence Of Students’ Socioeconomic Status Upon Musical Instrument Choice, Laterence E. Varnado
Exploring The Influence Of Students’ Socioeconomic Status Upon Musical Instrument Choice, Laterence E. Varnado
Honors Theses
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of socioeconomic status (SES) of students on their instrument choice. Information about SES and instrument choices could be valuable to music educators, especially at the beginning band level. If socioeconomic status affects instrument choice, teachers who recommend instruments to students may more effectively prescribe choices and take considerations for their students. Also, it would be helpful to know if certain students from certain socioeconomic groups are predisposed to certain choices or restrict themselves to certain instruments.
A sample population of band students was taken from two schools. One school had …
Preparation And Detection Of Degradation And Chain Scission Events In Epoxy-Amine Networks Using A Profluorescent Nitroxide Probe, Kylee F. Fazende
Preparation And Detection Of Degradation And Chain Scission Events In Epoxy-Amine Networks Using A Profluorescent Nitroxide Probe, Kylee F. Fazende
Honors Theses
Thermosetting polymers comprise a significant part of polymer research that is in progress today because thermosets are especially critical in the field of aerospace composites. In this context the proposed research project is designed to develop a novel method to detect and quantify chain scission and thermal degradation of matrix materials using profluorescent nitroxide probes as well as, to study the interaction of the thermoset with its environment during utilization and property degradation. Acquisition of this knowledge will allow for a better understanding of early, i.e., premacroscopic, thermoset degradation and to establish whether these early events are predictive of material …
Adaptive Selling: A New Direction For The Pharmaceutical Industry, Kristin M. Chmelicek
Adaptive Selling: A New Direction For The Pharmaceutical Industry, Kristin M. Chmelicek
Honors Theses
The pharmaceutical industry is moving towards more adaptive selling methods for their sales people. This means that the scripted sales pitch must be adjusted for the personality of the customer. Doctors were interviewed to understand their opinions of the sales people that come into their offices. Through the case studies, it was found that the doctors liked the adaptive selling methods with the combination of relational and scripted aspects for the sales presentation. Doctors found that the most successful sales calls were those that were a good combination of relational aspects as well as the education that is within the …
“I Have Beene A Reall Actor”: Analyzing The Writings Of John Smith Through The Lens Of Performative Documentary Theory, Kristen L. Walker
“I Have Beene A Reall Actor”: Analyzing The Writings Of John Smith Through The Lens Of Performative Documentary Theory, Kristen L. Walker
Honors Theses
In this thesis I turn to two of the originating texts of American literature: John Smith’s The Generall Historie of Virginia, and A True Relation. The General Historie was first published in 1624, sixteen years after Smith had returned to England, and A True Relation was published in 1608, just a year after Smith arrived Jamestown. These two were not the first or only texts Smith published. During his time spent as a mercenary, solider, and explorer, Smith also wrote eight other works. These two featured texts, The Generall Historie and A True Relation, present Smith’s time …

The Effect Of Patient Behavior And Race/Ethnicity On The Titration Of Opioid Analgesia, Kirstin N. Kellar
Honors Theses
The undertreatment of pain following surgery is an international problem that the majority of postoperative patients experience. Despite immense technological advances in pain management, the literature remains replete with examples of patients who experience postoperative oligoanalgesia. Because registered nurses play a vital role in the management of patient pain, their practices must be studied. This study examines the correlation between patient race/ethnicity and the titration of opioids in the postoperative setting. The study also explores the knowledge and attitudes that registered nurses possess regarding opioid administration. A convenience sample of 21 perioperative registered nurses was obtained from a hospital in …

Perceptions Of Bp: Successes Of Post 2010 Oil Spill Recover Effort, Jordan R. Mathews
Honors Theses
This purpose of this project was to determine peoples’ opinions of BP’s post 2010 oil spill recovery effort. The researcher examined 65 faculty at the University of Southern Mississippi in order to determine their beliefs, attitudes, and intentions concerning different elements of the BP oil spill recovery effort. The researcher found that there is an overall negative opinion concerning the economic, ecological, and overall recovery effort aspects of the spill. This research suggests that BP still has some work to do in order to restore the gulf coast like they promised.
Drosophila T-Box Transcription Factor Midline Functions In The Notch-Delta Signaling Pathway To Regulate Sensory Organ Precursor Cell Fate And Cell Survival And Embryonic Development Profile Of Midline, Senseless, And Achaete In The Cns And Pns, Joseph D. Saucier
Honors Theses
The gene mid of Drosophila is a highly conserved gene that codes for a T-box transcription factor with similar functionality to its vertebrate homolog Tbx20. Mid and Tbx20 are important for their roles in heart and CNS development. Additionally, these transcription factors aid in proper eye development but this area of research is vastly understudied. This study uses the eye of Drosophila to report that mid and its paralog H15 expression aid in the specification of sensory organ precursor (SOP) cell fates and cell survival in the pupal eye imaginal disc. Using RNAi interference to reduce mid expression resulted in …
Moral Foundherentism, Jonathan L. Cain
Moral Foundherentism, Jonathan L. Cain
Honors Theses
There exists a long standing debate between foundationalism and coherentism in epistemology. To resolve this debate, Susan Haack argues for a third, alternative theory—foundherentism—that incorporates the good elements of both foundationalism and coherentism while avoiding their shortcomings. It incorporates the foundationalist view that experiential input is necessary for empirical justification. And it incorporates the coherentist view that all beliefs can be justified in virtue of their mutually supportive relationships with other beliefs.
The debate between foundationalism and coherentism extends to moral epistemology. I will employ the same sort of strategy in an attempt to resolve this intractable dispute. I will …
The Search Continues: Modernizing The Quest For The Holy Grail In Film, Jody C. Balius
The Search Continues: Modernizing The Quest For The Holy Grail In Film, Jody C. Balius
Honors Theses
I focus here on The Natural (1984), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), and The Fisher King (1991). These three are clearly Grail-oriented stories that have different definitions of what the Grail truly is and means, but all have characters with internalized quests to find both greatness and peace within themselves. I used a literary approach to analyzing the films’ plots, themes, and motifs. Being a narrative analysis, the study focuses on the plot, characters, and content. Certain visual aspects of the films are also important to these narrative components, but the visual will be discussed insofar as it …

Differences In Latent Fingerprints Of Caucasian Children, Jessica D. Hill
Honors Theses
It is already known that the latent fingerprints of adults and the latent fingerprints of prepubescent children are different from each other in chemical makeup. This study compares the latent fingerprints of prepubescent children to each other—specifically attempting to determine if there are any noticeable differences between the latent prints of Caucasian male and female children using the processing methods of ninhydrin and indane dione. The latent fingerprints included in the study were processed and graded. Two independent t-tests as well as a factorial ANOVA were performed on the acquired data. It was found that there is not a significant …
The Effects Of Music On Foreign Language Retention In Elementary Schools, Hayley M. Collins
The Effects Of Music On Foreign Language Retention In Elementary Schools, Hayley M. Collins
Honors Theses
There are a variety of different strategies educators have to choose from when deciding to teach a foreign language in their elementary school classroom. Although this is so, there are still educators who choose to rely on the traditional method of rote memorization. Interactive play allows the students to be hands-on when learning foreign language vocabulary rather than simply memorizing it. Music is also incorporated into interactive play to see its effects on retaining the knowledge students are learning. Both of these, music and interactive play, were used in this study to prove that the combination of the two is …
The Level Of Commitment Of Intrinsic Religiosity And Relational Aggression In Middle-Aged Women, Hannah E. Allen
The Level Of Commitment Of Intrinsic Religiosity And Relational Aggression In Middle-Aged Women, Hannah E. Allen
Honors Theses
The study examined the relationship between the level of commitment to intrinsic religiosity and the role of relational aggression in the lives of middle-aged women. Research has shown that middle-aged women participate in relational aggression, but few studies have investigated it. The causes and methods of prevention in relational aggression are something to be considered, and a first step is examining risk and protective factors. Is intrinsic religiosity a protective or risk factor for participating as an instigator in relational aggression? Does intrinsic religiosity actually buffer the negative effects associated with victimization in relational aggression? Based on research that previously …
How Not To Spot A Terrorist: The Prevent Strategy’S Effect On British Muslims, Haddy K. Rikabi
How Not To Spot A Terrorist: The Prevent Strategy’S Effect On British Muslims, Haddy K. Rikabi
Honors Theses
The United Kingdom’s Prevent Strategy is a unique government response to the threat of domestic terrorism. The program mixes social interaction and police work to dissuade suspected political extremists from participating in or supporting terrorist activities. This approach to preventing terrorist threats has had its share of criticism, though. British activists decried the Prevent Strategy for promoting discrimination against Muslims in Britain, misuse of public funding for programs, and a fear of government intrusion into private lives. In addition to a divisive history between Muslims and British natives, the Prevent Strategy’s emphasis on threats posed by Al-Qaeda and other Islamist …

Developing Methods To Measure Small Attenuation Coefficients Using Short Distance Radiation Detection, Erica F. Bloor
Honors Theses
Accurate radiation measurements are very important for a variety of health, security, and industrial applications. The work described in this thesis is based upon developing a correction for the response of a sodium iodide (NaI) gamma-ray detector that is accurate enough to be used for determination of small mass-attenuation coefficients, such as for air, with short distance measurements. The goal is to find and apply appropriate corrections for the raw data provided by the NaI detector to enable the measurement of the gamma-ray mass-attenuation coefficients of air for detection distances of less than 1 meter. If measurements of the mass-attenuation …
Cloning And Expression Of The Cbbo (0910) Gene From Halothiobacillus Neapolitanus And Its Potential To Code For Rubisco Activase, Emily F.E. Bustin
Cloning And Expression Of The Cbbo (0910) Gene From Halothiobacillus Neapolitanus And Its Potential To Code For Rubisco Activase, Emily F.E. Bustin
Honors Theses
Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase or RubisCO is an enzyme found in autotrophic organisms that functions to fix CO2 and therefore plays an important role in the global carbon cycle. In order for RubisCO to increase its slow enzymatic rate, it must be exposed to high amounts of its substrate, CO2. Carboxysomes, which sequester the RubisCO and its substrate, provide this function. It was previously believed that all the components necessary for carboxysome function were encoded by genes within the traditional cso operon. Recently, however, a gene in an operon located downstream of the cso operon was found to encode …
As Seen In Vogue: An Analytical Observation Of Nudity In French And American Vogue, Elizabeth A. Kiehn
As Seen In Vogue: An Analytical Observation Of Nudity In French And American Vogue, Elizabeth A. Kiehn
Honors Theses
For centuries, Europe has been the leader in fashion production and innovation. At the heart of this continent lies the fashion capital of the world—France. French designers have always been on the cutting edge of fashion. Setting trends, shocking consumers, and enticing the world have been normal everyday activities for them as if it is in their blood. French culture is much more daring and open about sexuality in comparison to American culture, however, American designers and retailers are still heavily influenced by French fashion designs. This begs the question then: Are French fashion magazines equally influential on American fashion …
Using Manipulative Models To Develop Tree-Thinking, Donaven C. Mclaurin
Using Manipulative Models To Develop Tree-Thinking, Donaven C. Mclaurin
Honors Theses
It is well known that students often struggle with tree-thinking, a core aspect of evolutionary education. Scientists consider phylogenetic trees multidimensional hypotheses of evolutionary relationships. However, student view textbook diagrams as static, two-dimensional images. Physical manipulatives have been used to facilitate learning science content in areas such as genetics, but these instructional tools have not yet been tested in tree-thinking. In order to circumvent students’ tree-thinking struggles, I investigated the use of manipulative, three-dimensional tree models in an introductory biology course designed for non-science majors (n=163). Specifically my research questions included: What are the differences in tree-thinking learning gains when …

Characterization Of The Function Of A Mold Specific Gene, Ms95, In The Pathogenic Dimorphic Fungus, Histoplasma Capsulatum, Danielle J. Williamson
Honors Theses
Histoplasma capsulatum is a dimorphic fungus that causes the respiratory disease histoplasmosis. At 25°C, the fungus grows as a multicellular mold in soils contaminated by bird and bat excreta. Once the soil is disturbed, spores are released and inhaled into the lungs. The fungus shifts to a unicellular, pathogenic yeast within the lungs at 37°C. Our laboratory’s main objective is to characterize the genes that are involved in the mold-to-yeast dimorphism. This study focuses on the mold-specific gene, MS95. According to The Broad Institute Histoplasma capsulatum GenBank Blastx search, MS95 has several homologs, including the well-studied Saccharomyces cerevisiae. …
Identification Of An Unknown Intracellular Organism In Karenia Brevis, Daniel O. Mcarthur
Identification Of An Unknown Intracellular Organism In Karenia Brevis, Daniel O. Mcarthur
Honors Theses
The dinoflagellate K. brevis is a mixotrophic marine alga that is of ecological importance in coastal waters especially along the Gulf of Mexico. They are one of a few species of algae responsible for the production of “harmful algae blooms” or HABs in which they release neurotoxins called brevetoxins which negatively impact fishing industries, local wildlife, tourism, and coastal health. Because of the danger these algae pose their lifecycle and characteristics merit intensive study.
During a previous experiment in Dr. McLean’s lab involving salinity stressing cultured K. brevis, the stressed cultures exhibited an unusual data pattern when having their …
Intergenic Regions And Repeating Gene Sequences In The Dinoflagellate Karenia Brevis, Colleen A. Gregg
Intergenic Regions And Repeating Gene Sequences In The Dinoflagellate Karenia Brevis, Colleen A. Gregg
Honors Theses
Karenia brevis is a species of dinoflagellates that is responsible for “red tides” (more formally known as harmful algal blooms) found in the Gulf of Mexico. The blooms have adverse effects on humans and marine animals. Karenia brevis produces toxins that, in humans, can cause upper and lower respiratory problems as well as nausea and vomiting. For marine mammals, birds, fish, and other marine organisms, exposure to brevetoxins can result in morbidity and even death.
Even with the technology and resources we have today, scientist do not fully understand the mechanisms behind toxin production and bloom initiation. Because cellular processes …
Effects Of Illegal Immigration Upon Crime In The United States, Christopher M. Necaise
Effects Of Illegal Immigration Upon Crime In The United States, Christopher M. Necaise
Honors Theses
The U. S. Government regularly compiles and publishes statistics involving crimes occurring in the United States, especially through the Uniform Crime Reporting Statistics (UCR) and the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS). These publications can be used to search facts and figures with respect to crime, including by locale, type of crime and the race of the perpetrator, among others. Inexplicably, however, no data is provided with respect to whether the perpetrator has a legal or illegal immigration status or his/her ethnicity. This absence of objective data on crime and immigration has led to some with political agendas from both sides …
Assessing Behavior Change Related To Acute Stress Exposure In The Zebrafish, Christine E. Breazeale
Assessing Behavior Change Related To Acute Stress Exposure In The Zebrafish, Christine E. Breazeale
Honors Theses
Stress affects how we function in all aspects of our lives. It is our physiological response to a threat. In fact, its origins were very adaptive. Stress can cause an animal to flee a predator and avoid being eaten. In today’s society, stress can prompt us to work harder to achieve a good education or promotion at work so that we can afford food, shelter, and entertainment. But stress can also impair performance at work, on tests, and even can cause long-term bodily harm. In order to fully understand the deleterious effects of stress and thereby properly treat it, it …
The Effect Of Joint Attention Intervention Techniques On Expressive Language Ability In Preschool Children With Autism, Beverly L. Locker

Honors Theses
This study sought to investigate the effect of an intervention program for joint attention on joint attention and expressive language skill. The participants were five males with autism spectrum disorders who were attending a reverse inclusion preschool in the southeastern United States. The investigator observed the participants in their classrooms over a five-week period. The most significant finding was variation in the participants’ joint attention and language behaviors. Only one participant showed improvement across the period of the study. One important clinical implication from this study is the idea that therapy for joint attention might be more effective in a …
Teacher Stress And Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Annie M. Ellis
Teacher Stress And Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Annie M. Ellis
Honors Theses
There are many factors that can contribute to teacher stress in a primary school classroom. The classroom experience can be examined through various aspects, including the particular types of students that make up the class. Teachers can experience stress at a variety of levels in response to certain situations in their classroom experience, such as the presence of students with suspected and/or diagnosed ADD/ADHD in the classroom. Previous research has argued that teaching these students can be more challenging than when teaching other students. In this study, stress was measured using an altered version of the Perceived Stress Scale. The …
Arthropod Density In A Fragmented Urban Landscape Along The Northern Coast Of The Gulf Of Mexico, Anna E. Williams
Arthropod Density In A Fragmented Urban Landscape Along The Northern Coast Of The Gulf Of Mexico, Anna E. Williams
Honors Theses
Ecologists once focused their research on “pristine” habitats that were considered untouched by human activity. As urbanization rapidly increases, the concept of pristine habitats becomes obsolete. Urban habitats must be studied in order to understand the ecology of our increasingly developed society. Rapid urbanization greatly affects coastal habitats. Popular real estate, strip malls, casinos, and resorts all fragment urban landscapes. Much of the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico is a fragmented urban landscape caused by rapid development. That same coastal landscape is ecologically important and includes habitats important to many different organisms, among them intercontinental migratory songbirds that …
Localized Meshless Methods With Radial Basis Functions For Eigenvalue Problems, Amy M. Kern
Localized Meshless Methods With Radial Basis Functions For Eigenvalue Problems, Amy M. Kern
Honors Theses
Two localized meshless methods with radial basis functions are considered for solving eigenvalue problems on two different domains, i.e., a L-shaped domain and an irregular domain. The irregular domain used in this study comes from an application of the eigenvalue problem as it plays a role in the reconstruction of velocity vector fields. This study finds that both localized Kansa’s method and the Localized Method of Approximate Particular Solutions provide a good numerical approximation to the solution of the eigenvalue problem. Through numerical experiments, a good value for the shape parameter can be determined for each domain for each method …
