Der Fuehrer, Der Lehrer, Sally K. Sorensen
Honors Theses
Adolf Hitler and the National Socialist party made many changes to Germany's educational system. They changed overall aspects of education such as its goals and its purpose. They also changed the classroom by rearranging the curriculum and the educational environment. The Nazis originated an enormous movement towards deintellectualization. They taught boys and girls somewhat different lessons and attempted to persuade students to completely give themselves to the Reich; mind, body, and soul. All of the changes in the educational system were constructed to promote the Nazi party and help it prosper.
Dweezil's Dimensional Dream: A Computer-Based Multimedia Educational Game Pertaining To Area And Perimeter Developed And Implemented As An Alternative To Traditional Paper/Pencil Exercises For Students At The Secondary Level, Adam James Sterenberg
Honors Theses
Eleven months ago I decided to complete my Honor's College education by conducting a thesis project. Since a one hundred page paper was out of the question, I was forced to be creative. As a future math teacher I desired a type of application relevant to the classroom. Holding a minor in computer science made selecting a computer program for my thesis project an easy choice.
Transitions In Masculinity And Hemingway's Developed "Code", Daniel Polk
Transitions In Masculinity And Hemingway's Developed "Code", Daniel Polk
Honors Theses
The "Hemingway Code" is much more than two words that fit nicely together for a scholar's usage; the words signify a much deeper championing of masculinity, almost a haunting presence. For Ernest Hemingway living life every day, every moment with its fullest masculine fervor, became an obsession, a never-ending quest to be at one with the attitude of never complaining, never crying out, panicking, thinking too much, or regretting. To live a manly life in a series of tactical victories, performed with steadfast ritualistic mannerisms, is to embody masculinity, and therefore the "Hemingway Code."

Molecular Basis of Cancer: Cancer, a disease that has had a devastating and frightening impact on current society in the midst of a chemical revolution, represents a class of diseases comprising over 200 known types that affect various regions of the mammalian body (Farmer & Walker, 1985). This disease strikes randomly and is often diagnosed after the disease has progressed beyond present treatment capabilities. Cancer is the result of irregularities in growth, reproduction, and differentiation of cells due to pennanent flaws in genetic information. Mutations caused by environmental factors can be compounded over time to cause carcinomas of different tissues. …

Evaluation Of The Emotional Responsiveness Of Splanchnicectomized Laboratory Rats Using The Elevated Plus-Maze, Heather A. Finkle
Evaluation Of The Emotional Responsiveness Of Splanchnicectomized Laboratory Rats Using The Elevated Plus-Maze, Heather A. Finkle
Honors Theses
The goal of this study was to ascertain whether emotional responsiveness is attenuated when a subject undergoes bilateral splanchnicectomy. To accomplish this, the splanchnic nerve was severed bilaterally, below the branches to the adrenal glands. The majority of visceral information reaches spinal and medullary centers via the splanchnic, vagus, and pelvic nerves. Therefore, when severing the splanchnic nerve one eliminates one of the major afferent pathways transmitting visceral information to the central nervous system. Thus, we were testing the hypothesis that decreased feedback from portions of the gastrointestinal system would decrease emotional reactivity in a mildly arousing situation. No significant …

Women Leaders : Balancing Professional And Personal Lives, Meredith L. Schalick
Women Leaders : Balancing Professional And Personal Lives, Meredith L. Schalick
Honors Theses
The concept for my Senior Project originated from concerns and questions about my future and observations I have made about women leaders. This project was designed for four purposes: (1) to meet a need for University of Richmond students, (2) examine a subject in which I have vested interest because of my career goals, (3) improve my research skills, and (4) address an issue dealing with women and leadership. The project attempts to illustrate that women, as a result of their role assignment by society to be the primary care-provider for children, face certain challenges when they seek to find …
Investigating The Private Investigator, Michelle Garland
Investigating The Private Investigator, Michelle Garland
Honors Theses
A fast growing field of service is private investigations. There are an estimated 65,000 private detectives at work in the United States. This figure is up almost 65% from the estimated 40,000 in 1986. Investigation is a process of collecting data and applying logic which requires deductive and inductive reasoning. The purpose of this project is to examine these techniques, as applied to private investigation. This project will identify the various methods of investigation employed and focus on some ethical concerns of the profession. The structure is as follows: individuals who hire services will be identified, the ways in which …
The Businesswomen Of Richmond During The Civil War Era, Ilene Goldenberg
The Businesswomen Of Richmond During The Civil War Era, Ilene Goldenberg
Honors Theses
The history of businesswomen, like the history of businessmen, is largely stories of failure. Most of the Richmond businesswomen during this period experienced no success, some achieved marginal success, and only a handful achieved great success. For every woman like Mrs. Lyons or Mrs. Philips, there were five who failed within five years. But when one of these businesswomen failed, the effects were generally restricted to that particular woman, since most of these women ran small businesses that did not employ many workers. While their lack of overall success stands out, these women were able to achieve more control over …
Personal Interviews Vs. Awareness: A Health Promotion Program For Behavior Change, Elizabeth Klein
Personal Interviews Vs. Awareness: A Health Promotion Program For Behavior Change, Elizabeth Klein
Honors Theses
In the United States, heart disease is currently the number one cause of death in the adult population (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1991). Unlike many of the major causes of death, heart disease is largely preventable through changes in health related behaviors. Although a portion of heart disease risk is attributed to genetics, the primary cause of heart disease development lies in the eating habits, exercise behaviors, and smoking habits of the individual.
Paideia In Chattanooga: A Case Study, Carmen Jenkins
Paideia In Chattanooga: A Case Study, Carmen Jenkins
Honors Theses
This research investigated the educational reform effort based on Mortimer Adler's Paideia Proposal (Adler, 1982) as implemented in two Chattanooga City Public Schools, Chattanooga school for the Arts and Sciences (CSAS) and Chattanooga School for the Liberal Arts (CSLA). Extensive research of local newspaper files to gather historical data concerning the proposal's implementation, ethnographic interviews with community leaders and educators involved in the reform process, and an evaluation of the model were included in the study. Qualitative data to date indicated that reform efforts at CSAS, the pilot school for the Paideia project, and CSLA, the sister school, have been …
The Effects Of Berry Extracts From Phytolacca Americana (Pokeweed) On Seed Germination, Kevin Blake Anderson
The Effects Of Berry Extracts From Phytolacca Americana (Pokeweed) On Seed Germination, Kevin Blake Anderson
Honors Theses
Extracts from the berries of Phytolacca americana (Pokeweed) exhibit the ability to inhibit germination of a variety of seeds, including its own. This inhibition has been shown to be effective even in dilute samples of the extracts. However, it is not known whether the germination inhibition caused by these extracts is induced by physical or by chemical mechanisms. This research proposes that the germination inhibition is induced by chemical inhibitors present within the berries. In an attempt to uncover the chemical agent(s) responsible for the germination inhibition characteristics exhibited by berry extracts of Phytolacca americana (pokeberry extracts), several separation techniques …
Sturdy Rogues And Wanton Wenches : Response To Vagrancy And Development Of The Tudor Poor Laws, 1530-1597, Sonia T. Banerji
Sturdy Rogues And Wanton Wenches : Response To Vagrancy And Development Of The Tudor Poor Laws, 1530-1597, Sonia T. Banerji
Honors Theses
Tudor England experienced crisis levels of poverty and unemployment which manifested in the form of widespread vagrancy during the sixteenth century. From 1530 to 1597 the central government, often with inspiration from local initiatives, enacted a series of laws which attempted to address the causes of the problems as perceived by the public, in an effort to quell popular fears and anxieties regarding vagrancy.
The focus of this paper is on the response of Tudor society to the problems of poverty and vagrancy. It studies the statutory distinctions drawn between various states of poverty and how these differences disposed society …
The Political Views And Parliamentary Career Of John Selden, J.T. Price
The Political Views And Parliamentary Career Of John Selden, J.T. Price
Honors Theses
John Selden rose from a relatively obscure background to become an internationally renowned legal scholar and a key parliamentary leader during the contentious Parliament of 1628-1629. Selden's father was a "ministrell," yet the younger Selden became one of the most respected thinkers in London while still fairly young, and would eventually take a leading role in Parliament. Selden's brilliant mind, personality, and actions as an "honest broker" in his turbulent times made him a man who all sides could respect and who could stay afloat and prosper in the shifting political sands of Seventeenth Century England.
John Selden was the …

Leading Change In The Healthcare Industry : Sentara Health Systems, Norfolk, Virginia, Heather S. Heitz
Honors Theses
After going through the steps of implementing a change in Sentara Health Systems, I learned that using my visionary and participatory leadership skills contributed to my success in leading a change in the organization. First, I used my visionary leadership skills to encourage each individual to envision processes, to support each other, and to use resources which would motivate the group to do something that they wanted to do. Also, I used a participatory leadership to ensure that the subordinates were involved in the group's goals throughout the change process. By empowering people to have responsibility when changes are made …
