Radicle Restoration: Growing Native Plant Seedlings For Changing Landscapes, Madelyn Moore Apr 2025

Radicle Restoration: Growing Native Plant Seedlings For Changing Landscapes, Madelyn Moore

Honors Theses

In the wake of great anthropogenic change in the landscape across eastern North America, there is a need for ecological restoration. Forests, in particular, are struggling due to the decline of previously dominant tree species and the need to protect the understory from persistent invasion. Forests cannot follow the typical path of natural development through secondary succession due to the interference of invasive species. Invasive species thrive in disturbed habitats, and they have a variety of adaptations that allow them to outcompete native species. Invasive species removal alone leads to their return to previously invaded sites. Instead, invasive removal should …

Measuring Market Sentiment Towards Ceo Incentives, Joshua C. Whitehead Apr 2025

Measuring Market Sentiment Towards Ceo Incentives, Joshua C. Whitehead

Honors Theses

In the absence of agency issues, CEOs will act in the best interest of shareholders by maximizing firm value. Existing literature documents the individual agency of the CEO and how firms incentivize CEO behavior to align with shareholder interests. To study groups with varying initial incentives, I divide CEOs into internal and external origin to determine differences in compensation. This study then utilizes regressions to study the differences between candidate origin and corresponding incentive structure. I hypothesize that CEO profile influences compensation design to address candidate skills and agency costs, impacting firm value and market perception of CEO future value. …

The Interaction Between Parenting Styles, College Adjustment, And Decision Making In Undergraduate Freshman And Sophomores, Taylor Phillips

Honors Theses

Although considerable research has investigated how parenting styles impact child development, little is known about how parenting styles correlate with young adults’ adjustment to college. Parenting styles children are raised with may impact the development of skills such as resilience, problem-solving, and emotional regulation that influence how they react to difficult life transitions. Parenting styles may also impact a person’s decision making, including in situations involving self-control. Thus, the goal of this study was to investigate the relationship between parenting style, college adjustment, and self-control. This study used the Parenting Style and Dimension Questionnaire- Short Version, the Student Adaption to …

Examining The Causal Impact Of Prayer On Self-Control And Generosity, Angel R. Rivera-Martinez Apr 2025

Examining The Causal Impact Of Prayer On Self-Control And Generosity, Angel R. Rivera-Martinez

Honors Theses

Prayer is a behavior that is characteristic of most religions and spiritualities and a practice important to many people. Although many studies have looked at a wide variety of the possible outcomes and impacts of prayer on behavior and well-being, this research hopes to study the practice of prayer and its outcomes in a more theological lens. In the Bible, the Fruit of the Spirit outlines expected characteristics of a person or community living in accordance with the Holy Spirit. The two aspects of the Fruit that will be studied as variables within this experiment are self-control and generosity. The …

Do Super Shoes Improve Drop Jump Performance?, Emily Urban

Honors Theses

Super shoes are responsible for the astonishing improvements in marathon times; however, it is unknown whether they can also aid athletes when it comes to jumping performance. Thus, the present study was designed to investigate if super shoes improve jump performance in athletes in comparison with regular athletic shoes, as measured by vertical jump height and torque during a drop jump maneuver. In addition, the study investigated if there were differences in kinetic and kinematic variables during jumping between shoes, as measured by torque production at the hip, knees, and ankles during takeoff.

Characterization Of A Drosophila Crc 3-Hit Model Using Genetic Approaches, Sydney E. Anderson Apr 2025

Characterization Of A Drosophila Crc 3-Hit Model Using Genetic Approaches, Sydney E. Anderson

Honors Theses

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, resulting in the deaths of over 50,000 people every year (American Cancer Society, 2023). The similarities shared between mammal and Drosophila melanogaster anatomy within the intestinal tract make Drosophila a great model for studying colorectal cancer. This study will investigate tumor characteristics of a Drosophila CRC model generated by modulating three genes within the key Hippo pathway to create a 3-hit model: p53, RasV12, and APC. The gene combination in the 3-hit model closely emulates how CRC presents in humans and is therefore important to …

Estimating Disease Transmissions With Assortative Mixing By Vaccination Status, Jacob D. Biesecker-Mast Apr 2025

Estimating Disease Transmissions With Assortative Mixing By Vaccination Status, Jacob D. Biesecker-Mast

Honors Theses

Many mathematical models of infectious disease assume the population is well-mixed, meaning every pair of individuals is equally likely to contact each other, potentially spreading the disease. In reality, populations are rarely well-mixed, and an important way in which they are not is assortative mixing, that is, when pairs of individuals who are similar are more likely to contact one another than pairs of individuals who are different. Failing to account for assortative mixing by vaccine status leads to biased estimates of important quantities that characterize disease transmission, including reproduction numbers. We expand on this by developing a model that …

Original Sin Or The Lack Thereof Rousseau’S Philosophical Anthropology, Jane V. Carney Apr 2025

Original Sin Or The Lack Thereof Rousseau’S Philosophical Anthropology, Jane V. Carney

Honors Theses

Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s philosophical anthropology finds its roots in deeply theological territory. At the heart of his philosophy is the belief that man is essentially good but becomes corrupted by the influences of society. His strong belief in the innate goodness of humanity therefore led him to question Christian doctrines that appear to contradict that natural goodness. This then led him to object to the doctrine of original sin. Rousseau’s interpretation of original sin, and his subsequent rejection of it, shaped his broader political and philosophical thought, and is thus a vital piece of understanding Rousseau’s broader normative theory. Because he …

Step-Rate Manipulation For Improved Running Economy At A Performance, Noah Clemens Apr 2025

Step-Rate Manipulation For Improved Running Economy At A Performance, Noah Clemens

Honors Theses

The relationship between step rate (SR) and oxygen consumption (VO2) is non-linear, with an individual’s optimal SR minimizing VO2. Prior studies suggest highly trained runners do not self-select this optimal SR, though most research has focused on submaximal speeds. This study assessed whether highly trained male distance runners self-optimize SR at a performance pace. Twelve participants (22.5 ± 3.7 years) completed nine 4-minute treadmill trials at 4.96 m/s. The first trial was self-paced; remaining trials were metronome-cued (170–200 steps/min). VO2 was plotted against SR and modeled with a second-order polynomial to estimate optimal SR. Four participants were excluded due to …

Automated System For Photonic Integrated Circuit Measurement, Daniel F. Donnelly

Honors Theses

In recent years, with the advent of mature miniature semiconductor fabrication processes, the photonic integrated circuit (PIC) has emerged as a potential solution for the increased power consumption and bandwidth of conventional electronic computing technologies. As low-energy, optical devices, PICs serve to bring the solutions and advantages of optical technologies down to the form-factor of typical electronic microchips, including applications in telecommunications, high-speed computing, sensing, and quantum computing. However, despite the existing technologies for semiconductor fabrication, PICs, unlike their electronic counterparts, are exceedingly difficult to package and test, with each part of the process individually taking up roughly 30% of …

Investigating Tandem Propeller Performance In Multirotor Aircraft, Michael R. Foster Apr 2025

Investigating Tandem Propeller Performance In Multirotor Aircraft, Michael R. Foster

Honors Theses

Strategic placement of the rotors in a non-planar configuration can improve power efficiency in multirotor aircraft. To validate this concept, a custom-built multirotor was developed to conduct flight tests based on a prior wind tunnel study at the University of Dayton. The original study, conducted in the University of Dayton Low Speed Wind Tunnel (UD-LSWT), demonstrated that a negatively staggered rotor configuration with a vertical offset of 60% of the propeller diameter (0.6 dz) maximized power savings of individual rotors tested in tandem configuration. Flight test data confirmed improved power efficiency in negatively staggered configurations, achieving up to …

Highly Conjugated Bodipy Dye Capable Of Generating Both Singlet Oxygen And Superoxide Radical Within The Phototherapeutic Window, Emily A. Hardie

Honors Theses

The synthesis of a new BODIPY dye using a one-pot synthesis provides absorption and emission within the NIR-1 region. The maximum absorption wavelength of this dye occurs at 645 nm with a molar absorptivity of almost 44,000 M-1 cm-1. By incorporating iodine into the ortho-position of the meso-phenyl substituent gives this dye the ability to generate both singlet oxygen and superoxide radical when irradiated within the phototherapeutic window of 600 nm to 850 nm.

Gender In Math: The Short And Long Term Effects Of Bias In The Math Classroom, Kailey P. Peppard

Honors Theses

There are many different narratives that are thrown around regarding math with little ill intent but with little regard to the serious impacts that the phrases can have. The one that will be focused on in this project is the idea that “math is a male subject” or that men are inherently better at math than women. This project will attempt to draw a connection between the narratives and the fact that there is a significant lack of women in STEM fields or pursuing higher level math. By reaching out to both students and teachers, the goal is to learn …

Observations Of Memristive Behavior For Ba0.6Sr0.4Tio3 And Ba0.7Sr0.3Tio3 Through Iv Curve Analysis, Tristan D. Quach

Honors Theses

As indicated by the consistent validation of Moore’s Law, decreasing the size of electronics has been a perpetual goal for decades. Memristors have a unique way of decreasing the size of devices by performing the functions of what would normally need a group of devices. This is done by making use of the multiple states of a memristor. Additional useful qualities of memristors include ultrafast switching, low power consumption, and nonvolatile memory. There are many possible dielectrics that can be used for memristive devices, but barium-based dielectrics show promise. Sixty-forty and seventy-thirty compositions of strontium barium titanate (BST) are dielectrics …
