Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost: The Long Way Home In The Works Of Lee Smith, Emily Louise Haadsma
Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost: The Long Way Home In The Works Of Lee Smith, Emily Louise Haadsma
Honors Theses
I read the majority of Smith's novels on a mountain in Mentone, Alabama last summer at a eamp for girls. Though Lookout Mountain is a baby, a foothill of Smith's Appalachia, my environment helped me imagine Ivy Rowe's setting. Fair ami Temier Ladies struck me with its sense of loss. This key word of loss drove my preliminary research. It wasn't until reading later novels that I discovered the hope Smith brought to the discussion. I chose Ivy. Florida Grace, and Molly because they build upon one another's characters well. Their stories wander and return to their changed homes as …

Communicative Development Through A Comparative Lens: A Snapshot Of Foreign Language Education In The United States And France, Halley Anne Hargrave
Honors Theses
This thesis is an examination of external influences on the foreign language classroom. I evaluate national policy and legislature, textbooks, and national tests as possible determinants of foreign language teaching methods used in the United States and France. I chose to compare the American system to the French system as a result of the relative success of foreign language education in France and my ability to read policy and curriculum in French. By comparing the foreign language education systems in the two countries, I hope to determine what types of weaknesses in American foreign language instruction practices hinder language acquisition. …

Reality's Unrealities: The Magical Real In Selected Plays Of Tennessee Williams, Elena Lee Mcpherson
Honors Theses
After a semester of studying more than ten of Tennessee Williams plays, 1 decided to explore a selection of his plays in the context of magical realism. Initially, the connection between a playwright from the Southern United States and the literary tradition of Latin America seemed distant Upon further research and closer readings, however, I found that Tennessee Williams's plays The Glass Menagerie, Orpheus Descending, and Camino Real all exemplify various characteristics of the magical real within new contexts. In keeping with the tradition of magical realism. each of the plays uniquely exhibits the fantastic to speak to larger truths …

Find Yourself, Forget Yourself, Catherine Carter Servati
Find Yourself, Forget Yourself, Catherine Carter Servati
Honors Theses
This thesis is written in the form of a selfreflective, memoir-esque essay evaluating the journey of my undergraduate academic career. Everyone tells a story with his or her life. Often, distracted by the demands of everyday living, we stop paying attention to that story. In an intentional effort to better understand where I have been, where it is that I am going, and what exactly I am saying with my life, I have written this personal narrative. Although insecurity and vulnerability are a byproduct of this type of self-exposure, little is gained without ever taking a risk. The time, effort, …

On The Ethics Of Human Genetic Engineering, John Ryan Speights
On The Ethics Of Human Genetic Engineering, John Ryan Speights
Honors Theses
In this paper I propose a guideline that we may use to determine when it is ethical to take advantage of the technology that we call human genetic engineering. I first clarify the purpose of the paper by explaining the science behind the technology, defining much of the debate in the process. In short, manufactured DNA is introduced into the human genome for the purpose of modifying the expression of the genes and the person that they produce. I indicate that this is a value theory paper rather than a detailed policy paper. This is significant because it merely addresses …

Five Supreme Court Cases Everyone Should Know, Ann K. Vaught
Five Supreme Court Cases Everyone Should Know, Ann K. Vaught
Honors Theses
Operating under the assumption that the average college student knows little to nothing about the Supreme Court and significant cases in the field of American constitutional law, the author hypothesizes that this ignorance is due not to an inability to understand the material, but an unwillingness on the part of the average student to expend the effort necessary to decipher the "legalese" of an average Supreme Court opinion. The author also hypothesizes that it is the high and lofty language of the opinions that generally disenchants the reader, and not the information itself. Therefore, as a means of testing this …
The Divine Dilemma: The Development Of Puritan Thought Concerning Church And State In New England, 1630-1780., John Tyler Clemons
The Divine Dilemma: The Development Of Puritan Thought Concerning Church And State In New England, 1630-1780., John Tyler Clemons
Honors Theses
As devout Calvinists, the Puritans’ first loyalty to their interpretation of the Bible put them at odds with the English Crown and the Anglican Church, which demanded obedience to religious and secular authority above all else. Unwilling to recant, the Puritans found themselves in a “divine dilemma” with two equally unacceptable options: continued persecution or open rebellion. The flight to New England temporarily solved the Puritans’ dilemma by removing them from the immediate reach of the king and his bishops. Upon their amval in Massachusetts, the Puritans began constructing a “City on a Hill,” a religiously homogenous society based upon …

Five Point Zero Divisor Graphs, Florida Victoria Levidiotis
Honors Theses
We study the zero divisor graphs, determined by equivalence classes of zero divisors of a ring R. with exactly five vertices. In particular, we determine which graphs with exactly five vertices can be realized as the zero divisor graph of a ring. We provide rings for the graphs which are possible, and prove that the rest of graphs can not be realized via any commutative ring. There are thirty-four graphs in total which contain exactly five vertices.

Alpha-Representability Of Vector Lattices, Matthew Judson Stephenson
Alpha-Representability Of Vector Lattices, Matthew Judson Stephenson
Honors Theses
The primary topic of this thesis is representation of vector lattices. The related theory of Boolean algebras is used as a tool to this end. In [1], Brown and Nakano present a theorem that establishes what we will call cr-representabihty for vector lattices in this thesis. We cast their proof in the light of the Boolean algebra of bands. Consequently, we show that it is the Loomis-Sikorski Theorem which makes their proof work. We then exploit this insight to study a-representability for greater cardinal numbers a. A primary goal of this thesis is to be self-contadned. As a result of …

The Effects Of The Beta1 Receptor Antagonist, Metoprolol, On Methamphetamine-Induced Changes In Body Temperature In Varying Ambient Temperatures, Ricki Lee Harrell
Honors Theses
Methamphetamine (METH) induces hyperthermia or hypothermia depending on the ambient temperature. The β1 receptor is involved in body temperature control via brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenesis. Our objective was to determine the effect of selective β1 antagonist, metoprolol (METO), on METH-induced changes in body temperature in varying ambient conditions. Rats received pretreatment injections of saline, 5.0 mg/kg METO, 10.0 mg/kg METO, or 15.0 mg/kg METO 30 minutes prior to receiving cither saline or 5.0 mg/kg METH injection. Body temperature was measured telemetrically at either 18°C, 24°C, or 30°C ambient temperatures. 10.0 mg/kg METO attenuated METH-induced hyperthermia at 60 minutes in …

The Mobilization Of China’S Legal System And Religious Bureaucracy As A Means Of Combating The Threat Of The Falun Gong, Cooper Reves
Honors Theses
In 1992, Li Hongzhi, an obscure man from the northern Chinese province of Jilin, introduced to the world a set of five Qigong exercises which would form the basis of the Falun Gong movement. In the years that followed, the Falun Gong quickly grew to an estimated 100 million practitioners worldwide that expeditiously spread from China to the rest of the world. Though the group was pacifistic in its ideology, the Chinese government was never quite comfortable with the Falun Gong's presence, and in 1999, the government began a widespread effort to discredit the Falun Gong, culminating in the arrest …

Jill Peets: From Degenerate Monsters to Revenge of the Big Mac: A Study of French anti-Americanism (Under the direction of Dr. Anne Quinney)
Franco-American relations date back to the eighteenth century and are a topic that historians have studied for years. France has never been to war with the United States, yet the French are ardently anti-American. The phenomenon of French anti-Americanism is what this thesis seeks to understand and explain. Through various secondary sources, historical data, and public opinion polls, the thesis examines events throughout time, from the American Revolution in 1776 until the Haitian earthquake in 2010. By …
The Ties That Bind: Social Bonds In Shakespeare's The Merchant Of Venice, Lillian Nicole Rogers
The Ties That Bind: Social Bonds In Shakespeare's The Merchant Of Venice, Lillian Nicole Rogers
Honors Theses
This thesis studies The Merchant of Venice with particular regards to the role of social bonds in the community of the play and in the actions of the characters. These bonds serve as ties that connect the characters to each other and also to the dominant social structure of their world—a structure that is patriarchal, class-based, and ostensibly Christian. The following chapters focus on four types of bonds that are especially vital to the play: those relating to law, gender, classes, and religion. These bonds manifest themselves in different areas of life, but they are all rooted in the workings …
Droplet Pinch Off Dynamics In Viscoelastic Fluid, Andrew Jonathan Thurber
Droplet Pinch Off Dynamics In Viscoelastic Fluid, Andrew Jonathan Thurber
Honors Theses
The rate at which fluid streams condense into droplets and separate is, in general, not linear with respect to time. Numerous Newtonian fluids have been studied and modeled, and the general form of such droplet pinches is that the radius of the narrowest portion of the stream collapses to a singularity as a function of time prior to pinch raised to a power <1. This experiment examines the case of a non-Newtonian fluid composed of various concentrations of CTAB and NaSal, to determine if the time scaling of droplet pinch varies with the concentration of the fluid and if the fluid’s elasticity affects this collapse. To investigate this, a high speed camera with a macro lens operating at 15kfps (15,000 frames per second) was positioned in front of a clear tube, over which a pipette of the solution was suspended. The fluid was then slowly released to form droplets, and the recorded images were analyzed using a computer program written by Dr. Joseph Gladden. The results show that as concentration of the micellar fluid increases, the exponent of the time scaling decreases. This shows that wormlike micellar fluids do not follow scaling trends of Newtonian fluids, and further theoretical work is needed.
