Analyzing Methods To Mock The Ingestion Of Controlled Substances Within A Hair Strand Utilizing Libs Technology, Caitlin Deluke
Analyzing Methods To Mock The Ingestion Of Controlled Substances Within A Hair Strand Utilizing Libs Technology, Caitlin Deluke
Honors Theses
The analysis of controlled substance metabolites within the hair strand have been relied on within the scientific community, particularly in regard to Forensic Science and Criminal Justice practices. A common conflict when analyzing a strand, however, involves manipulation of one’s hair, be it through bleach and dyes or detox shampoos. Therefore, research must be conducted to determine how these manipulation efforts affect the concentrations detectable when it comes to lab analyses. This would allow for clarification within data analysis and potentially prove purposeful intent to cover up the ingestion of a controlled substance. In order to research these manipulation effects …
The Effect Of Epstein Barr Virus On Myocarditis, Ashley Jones
The Effect Of Epstein Barr Virus On Myocarditis, Ashley Jones
Honors Theses
Viral myocarditis is an inflammatory state of the heart muscle that is often a result of a viral infection. As of now, current research has linked Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), COVID-19, influenza, coxsackievirus B3 and rhinovirus to causing viral myocarditis. This proposed work examines EBV and its linkage to viral myocarditis. Due to its lytic and latent activation periods, EBV has the potential to infect cardiomyocytes and persist within different regions of the heart wall. In this experiment, the presence of EBV was tested in 72 total heart tissue samples, 36 from non-cardiomyopathy deaths and the other 36 from cardiomyopathy-related deaths. …

There is a variety of research published about the use of music therapy interventions and their outcomes for the pediatric hematology-oncology and outpatient groups, however the research is not combined to put together a description of the most effective interventions utilized in one place. This scoping review addressed the questions of what music therapy interventions are used in the pediatric hematology/oncology and outpatient settings, and what the outcomes of music therapy were respectively. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were established to determine what articles to include in the review. Three databases including Google Scholar, WMU Library, and PubMed were searched to …
The Effects Of Holistic Modalities On Stress Reduction In Nursing Students Attending School During The Pandemic, Rachel Kamp
The Effects Of Holistic Modalities On Stress Reduction In Nursing Students Attending School During The Pandemic, Rachel Kamp
Honors Theses
Nursing students tend to experience high levels of stress due to the pressures and demands of nursing school, including exams, clinical, and interactions with professors and preceptors (Labrague et al., 2017). Recently, the COVID-19 Pandemic has created additional stressors. Both mind and body modalities (yoga, meditation, deep breathing etc.) and exercise modalities (running, walking, etc.) are some of many health promoting, stress reducing activities that were proven to be effective in reducing stress in nursing students prior to the pandemic. This study aims to determine if these modalities are still effective now, and how nursing faculty supports stress reduction in …

Improving Adjacency List Storage Methods For Polypeptide Similarity Analysis, Arianna Swensen
Improving Adjacency List Storage Methods For Polypeptide Similarity Analysis, Arianna Swensen
Honors Theses
Protein design is a complex biomolecular and computational problem. Working on increasingly large protein folding problems requires an improvement in current analysis methods available. This work first discusses various methods of protein design, including de novo protein design, which is the primary focus of this thesis. Then, a new approach utilizing a B+ tree to effectively store and query a graph of keys and vertices is proposed in order to store the number of times two polypeptides are considered to be similar. This approach is found to have a reduction in time complexity from current mapping methods and thus provides …
Influence Of The Virgin Mary In Anglo-Saxon Christianity, Kimberly Merfert
Influence Of The Virgin Mary In Anglo-Saxon Christianity, Kimberly Merfert
Honors Theses
Though it remains unclear when Christianity was first introduced to England, it is certain Christianity was established by the early third century. It was not until the beginning of the seventh century, however, that Christianity flourished in Anglo-Saxon England, bringing with it a new understanding of the feminine role. Once enthralled by the coming of Jesus Christ, worshippers of the Virgin Mary idealized the Mother of God as the realization of the ideals of purity, humility, and passivity. They defined Saint Mary by her sinlessness, valuing her unbreakable virginity as a symbol of unparalleled strength, responsibility, and holiness. Mary herself …
Understanding The Molecular Mechanism Of Ilv1 Stress Sensitivity In Yeast By Examination Of Differential Patterns Of Gene Expression Between Wild-Type And Ilv1 Knockout Strains Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Emily Schuster
Honors Theses
As arguably the most widely used industrial eukaryote, Saccharomyces cerevisiae has become one of the many model organisms used to study molecular genetics. A recent unpublished study at the University of Tennessee - Chattanooga showed that yeast cells that had the ILV1 gene knocked out had reduced survivability under stress conditions. This study then focused on the role of ILV1 in the stress response of cells by measuring the expression levels of 11 candidate genes that are all involved in some critical pathway in the yeast to see how gene expression was influenced as a result of the loss of …

Analysis Of Ecological Tradeoffs Between Congeneric Shrimp In Coastal Mississippi Waters, Baylor K. Lynch
Honors Theses
Palaemonidae is an ecologically important and abundant family of shrimp that link the benthos to many estuarine food webs. Palaemon pugio and Palaemon vulgaris regularly co-occur along estuarine edge habitats despite previous studies suggesting different preferred sediment types and salinity regimes. The objective was to determine if competition is occurring between the congeners by comparing their relative abundance and assessing isotope niche space along an estuarine gradient. I seasonally sampled various edge habitats at four sites throughout Biloxi Bay, MS, using fyke nets fished over a tidal cycle from November 2020 to November 2021. Collected organisms were identified to the …

Growth And Mortality Of American Oysters (Crassostrea Virginica) For Several Years In The Mississippi Sound – Effects Of Freshwater Influence, Taylor Slade
Honors Theses
The American oyster, Crassostrea virginica, is a filter feeding bivalve native to the Gulf of Mexico, and an essential part of the Mississippi Sound estuarine ecosystem. In recent years, influx of freshwater into the Mississippi Sound as a result of frequent rainfall events has altered the water chemistry in several ways that are detrimental to the oyster populations. In this thesis, I examine the growth rate of C. virginica over the last five years in association with salinity fluctuations in the Mississippi Sound. Given diminishing populations and limited recruitment, researchers have facilitated citizen-scientist managed oyster gardens along the coast …
Assessing The Damage: Moral Realism And The Evolutionary Debunking Argument, Olivia Denton
Assessing The Damage: Moral Realism And The Evolutionary Debunking Argument, Olivia Denton
Honors Theses
For millennia, prominent thinkers have believed that moral sentiments were the recognition of external, objective truths, be they of divine, Platonic, or natural origin. Now the challenge is to find any objective tether at all for our evaluative judgements. The theory of evolution’s encroachment on metaethics is practically as old as Charles Darwin himself, but the more evolved version of this attack on the justification for moral realism (the position that avers the existence of objective moral truths and that we can know at least some of them) comes in the form of Evolutionary Debunking Arguments (EDAs). The (specifically, materialist) …

“What Is The Environment Doing To Our Genes?”: A Pedigree Analysis Of The Possible Genetic Basis Of A Set Of Familial Clinical Disorders, Emily N. Goodman
“What Is The Environment Doing To Our Genes?”: A Pedigree Analysis Of The Possible Genetic Basis Of A Set Of Familial Clinical Disorders, Emily N. Goodman
Honors Theses
The exact contribution the environment plays in human health is unknown; however, it is estimated that 24% of the global disease burden and 23% of deaths are attributed to environmental factors (Remoundou and Koundouri 2009). With the statistics from previous studies drawing attention to the impact of the environment on humans, it makes sense why the number of clinical disorders is on the rise. Many are being impacted more frequently than in previous generations by clinical disorders. This study was conducted to investigate a personal pedigree to gain insight and analysis to determine a possible connection between the environment and …

Examining The Use Of Naturally Occurring Free Radical Scavengers Against Uv Light Damage In Cancer Prevention, Tanner Justice
Honors Theses
A strong association has been found between mutated p53 tumor suppressor genes and cancers in humans. Cancers arise from a culmination of genetic and environmental factors, including exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun. Prolonged exposure to UV has proven negative effects on cell homeostasis. Much of the damage caused by UV light exposure is through generation of free radicals. Zeaxanthin and melatonin are known antioxidant/free radical scavengers which protect cells by neutralizing damage causing free radical molecules. This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of zeaxanthin and melatonin in preventing the negative effects of UV light on …

Descriptive Representation In State Legislatures: Exploring The Educational Backgrounds Of State Representatives And Senators, Skylar Dykes
Descriptive Representation In State Legislatures: Exploring The Educational Backgrounds Of State Representatives And Senators, Skylar Dykes
Honors Theses
This project will investigate the influence of descriptive representation as it pertains to efficacy in a democratic system. It is possible that policy outputs are heavily dependent upon motivations of an elected official, even more so than the anticipated or predictable effects of an ideological stance. We expect that, following the juxtaposition of a state legislator’s voting records with his or her biographical data, these claims will be supported by data related to higher education and its funding allocations. We are especially interested in the specific relationship between the educational background of state legislators, and whether or not a correlation …
Arabidopsis Shoot Gravitropism Requires The Mediator Coactivator Complex, Gabriella Newton
Arabidopsis Shoot Gravitropism Requires The Mediator Coactivator Complex, Gabriella Newton
Honors Theses
Gravitropism is a plant response to gravity in directing the growth of its organs, such as the root and the stem. Gravity is sensed by statocytes, unique cells that contain starch-filled amyloplasts, which trigger gravitropic growth response by modulating the distribution of growth hormone auxin in the elongation zone of the stem and root. Despite the fact that multiple factors have been identified as key regulators of shoot negative gravitropism, how these factors are regulated at the transcriptional level is largely unknown. In this study, we explore the role of transcriptional machinery in regulating shoot gravity sensing and responses by …

Organizational Effectiveness Of Rabies Division Of South Carolina Dhec, Camden Daniel Sasfai
Honors Theses
There are two types of rabies, known as furious and paralytic, that are both spread mostly through saliva of wild or domesticated animals via scratches and bites. Both types can ultimately result in death of the human victim, yet both are vaccine-preventable diseases. Transmission of the rabies disease to humans is usually found following a deep bite or scratch from an infected animal, and transmission to humans by rabid dogs accounts for up to 99% of human infection cases, though bats are now an increasing source of human death due to rabies as well. Surprisingly enough, human deaths following exposure …
