Eight aerosol samples were collected from a height of 34 meters atop Petit Manan Light located 16 miles East of Bar Harbor, Maine between July 25, 1995 and August 1, 1995. Both coarse and fine fractions were collected on 8.0 and 0.2 micron polycarbonate membrane filters, respectively. The sampling station consisted of a sampling box as well as a weather station (with various instruments) to record weather data for help in the analysis. The samples were analyzed using a scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. The Effects Of Thyroid Hormone On Myosin Heavy Chain A-7 Production In Xenopus Laevis Tail And Leg Muscles, Andrew R. Noble

The present research examines the expression of myosin heavy chain genes in muscle fibers in Xenopus laevis. Characteristically different muscle fibers are expressed before and after metamorphosis. The embryonic myosin proteins that are synthesized during the tadpole stages are replaced with adult myosin heavy chains at metamorphosis. At least one of the adult myosin genes, called A-7, is expressed only in the adult animals, not in tadpoles. The controlling factor or trigger for the expression of this adult gene still remains unknown. There are a number of possible explanations for the A-7 regulation at metamorphosis, including changes in particular hormone …

The drug sodium pentacyanonitrosylferrate(2-)dihydrate, more commonly known as nitroprusside or nipride (Fig. 1), is a common vasodilating agent given clinically to patients with hypertension.12.22 Nitroprusside is effective in emergency rooms as it quickly reduces high blood pressure, but dosages are limited because of fear that cyanide could be released also. Nitroprusside is effective because the vasodilating agent nitric oxide, NO, is released. Nitric oxide is also recognized as an important biochemical messenger molecule.22 Our research involves a search for different species that could introduce nitric oxide into the body without cyanide. Adolf Hitler and the National Socialist party made many changes to Germany's educational system. They changed overall aspects of education such as its goals and its purpose. They also changed the classroom by rearranging the curriculum and the educational environment. The Nazis originated an enormous movement towards deintellectualization. They taught boys and girls somewhat different lessons and attempted to persuade students to completely give themselves to the Reich; mind, body, and soul. All of the changes in the educational system were constructed to promote the Nazi party and help it prosper.

The "Hemingway Code" is much more than two words that fit nicely together for a scholar's usage; the words signify a much deeper championing of masculinity, almost a haunting presence. For Ernest Hemingway living life every day, every moment with its fullest masculine fervor, became an obsession, a never-ending quest to be at one with the attitude of never complaining, never crying out, panicking, thinking too much, or regretting. To live a manly life in a series of tactical victories, performed with steadfast ritualistic mannerisms, is to embody masculinity, and therefore the "Hemingway Code."

Molecular Basis of Cancer: Cancer, a disease that has had a devastating and frightening impact on current society in the midst of a chemical revolution, represents a class of diseases comprising over 200 known types that affect various regions of the mammalian body (Farmer & Walker, 1985). This disease strikes randomly and is often diagnosed after the disease has progressed beyond present treatment capabilities. Cancer is the result of irregularities in growth, reproduction, and differentiation of cells due to pennanent flaws in genetic information. The goal of this study was to ascertain whether emotional responsiveness is attenuated when a subject undergoes bilateral splanchnicectomy. To accomplish this, the splanchnic nerve was severed bilaterally, below the branches to the adrenal glands. The majority of visceral information reaches spinal and medullary centers via the splanchnic, vagus, and pelvic nerves. Therefore, when severing the splanchnic nerve one eliminates one of the major afferent pathways transmitting visceral information to the central nervous system. Thus, we were testing the hypothesis that decreased feedback from portions of the gastrointestinal system would decrease emotional reactivity in a mildly arousing situation. No significant …

Extracts from the berries of Phytolacca americana (Pokeweed) exhibit the ability to inhibit germination of a variety of seeds, including its own. This inhibition has been shown to be effective even in dilute samples of the extracts. However, it is not known whether the germination inhibition caused by these extracts is induced by physical or by chemical mechanisms. This research proposes that the germination inhibition is induced by chemical inhibitors present within the berries. The University of Chattanooga was founded in 1886. A few years before this time, many of Chattanooga's trees were replanted in the wake of the Civil War, during which most of the tree population was destroyed. Therefore, many of the trees located on campus today date back over one hundred years, but not much longer. In 1969, the university merged with the University of Tennessee system and became the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. The UTC campus is surrounded by buildings and has sidewalks and streets, which can produce an unfavorable environment for many tree species. Pavement and buildings create …

Volvox carteri, a multi-celled green algae, can grow synchronously given a sixteen hour light period followed by an eight hour dark period, a cycle which is repeated for a 48 hour growth cycle total. Near the end of each light period, reproductive cells divide rapidly resulting in the differentiation of ceIls. When the dark period begins, this differentiation stops and the cells remain dormant with little protein synthesis or differentiation occurring. Immediately after the lights come back on, however, the cells again undergo rapid protein synthesis and complete their differentiation. Sodium dodecyl sulfide (SDS) non-acrylamide gel-filled capillary columns are a new technology being used for analysis and separation of biotechnology-derived proteins. This research was to compare this new technology to the current methods of SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and high-performance size-exclusion chromatography (HPSEC). The molecular mass of four different recombinant proteins were determined by two commercialized SDS non-acrylamide gel-filled capillary columns, SDS-PAGE, and HPSEC. The data obtained showed that the SDS non-acrylamide gel-filled capillary columns were compatible with the SDS-PAGE technique for molecular mass determination. HPSEC was shown to be unreliable for molecular weight determination. SDS non-acrylamide gel-filled capillary …

This work investigates English constructions that employ the preposition "around" in relation to the Kalabari equivalents of these expressions. The work begins with a general discussion of the Kalabari language, and moves to a short talk about prototype theory. Pertinent data sets are then presented in both English and Kalabari. These data serve to support the author's assumptions concerning stem forms and phonological changes within the Kalabari semantic network for "around' constructions, which are presented in the next section. During a ten-month period in 1992, vascular plants were collected at Spangler far, in the city of Chattanooga,TN. The specimens were colelcted from various habitats ranging from ponds bed to dry, rocky areas. Of the 379 specimens collected, 70 families, 182 genera, and 267 species were identified. Several range extensions and non-native species occur. Observations were made from information collected concerning the distribution and origin of introduced species occuring on the farm. Spangler Farm is the property of the city of Chattanooga. As a city park, the area is preserved for the enjoyment and use of the community. The purpose …

Volvox carteri, a multicellular green algae, possesses two distinct cell types--the gonidia and somatic cells. This simple germ-soma dichotomy is ideal for the study of the control of cytodifferentiation. The control of cytodifferentiation in this organism has been identified as a posttranscriptional mechanism, which suggests translation. Initiation factors have been shown to play an important role in controlling translation in many other developmental systems. Therefore, study of the initiation factors in Volvox may shed light on a translational control mechanism. A link has been suggested by psychologists and clinicians between sexual abuse in childhood and adolescence, and later eating disorders. The present study investigates childhood sexual experiences and the appearance of eating disorders in a college. sample. The Eating Attitudes Test and the Finkelhor Sexual Victimization Scale were used in a sample of 158 undergraduates. The data confirmed the hypotheses that there is a significant association between childhood sexual abuse and eating disorders. Those sexually abused between the ages of 12-16 reported significantly higher eating disorders. Therefore the possibility of sexual abuse must be assessed and results included in a …
