Ph Dependent Proteolysis Of Neural Cadherin, Candice Ashton Walters
Ph Dependent Proteolysis Of Neural Cadherin, Candice Ashton Walters
Honors Theses
Cadherins are the primary calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion molecule and are essential to vertebrates. They ensure the integrity of epithelial barriers that allow for maintenance of homeostasis in humans and protection against invading microorganisms. A common invader capable of forging past this line of defense is the fungus Candida albicans. The main virulence mechanism of C. alibans in acidic environments is its secreted aspartyl proteinases (SAPs), which are hydrolytic enzymes that degrade cadherin-mediated cell adhesion leading to infection of the underlying tissues. Cadherin is normally resistant to cleavage by proteases due to stabilization of the protein structure by bound calcium and …

Polycationic Perylenebisimides For G-Quadruplex Binding, Andrew Jacob Matrick
Polycationic Perylenebisimides For G-Quadruplex Binding, Andrew Jacob Matrick
Honors Theses
Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) can exist in a quadruplex arrangement that requires an abundance of guanine residues [2]. The structures of various quadruplexes have been revealed, in vitro, and, more recently, in vivo [4,5]. Guanine quadruplexes are thermo dynamically stable. It is postulated that quadruplex destabilization facilitates a conformational change in the structure that could serve as a switch for gene expression [5]. This principle is the basis for targeting quadruplexes with organic, small-molecule binding and stabilizing agents. Quadruplexes may play an important role in regulating the expression of many genes, including those implicated in cancer. Stabilization of the quadruplex contained …
An Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Incorporating Virtual Cadaver Study On Student Performance In Human Anatomy And Physiology, Mary Katherine Kerce
An Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Incorporating Virtual Cadaver Study On Student Performance In Human Anatomy And Physiology, Mary Katherine Kerce
Honors Theses
In an ideal Human Anatomy & Physiology (Human A&P) laboratory, students would use human cadavers for study. However, due to the limited supply of human cadavers and high cost of constructing and maintaining laboratory facilities, many institutions choose to use various animal organs and models to teach human anatomy. Dissections are an irreplaceable tool to help students understand human anatomy because models often have garish colors that allow easy discrimination of structures but do not show the colors and textures associated with real tissue. Additionally, cadavers, organs. and models must remain within the laboratory, so students have limited access. The …
Spectroscopic Study Of Charge Transfer Induced Blue Shifting Of Pyrimidine/Water Mixtures On Silver Substrate, Annie Katherine Mcclellan
Spectroscopic Study Of Charge Transfer Induced Blue Shifting Of Pyrimidine/Water Mixtures On Silver Substrate, Annie Katherine Mcclellan
Honors Theses
Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a chemical method gaining much popularity in recent years. With the use of a roughened metal surface or metal nanoparticles, surface plasmon resonances enhance the electromagnetic field allowing for increased Raman signal. Pyrimidine, having two lone pairs of electrons, is capable of charge transfer interactions contributing to a SERS chemical enhancement factor as well. It has recently been reported that hydrogen bonding with water results in the blue-shifting of certain normal modes of pyrimidine. By comparing experimental polarized Raman spectra with the results of electronic structure calculations, the origin of this blue-shifting was found …
Enlightenment Science And Nano-Science: Creating Order Out Of Magic, Elizabeth Ramsey Frey
Enlightenment Science And Nano-Science: Creating Order Out Of Magic, Elizabeth Ramsey Frey
Honors Theses
People today live in a world dominated by technology. All of the conveniences and technologies people enjoy and utilize today, however, would not exist without the foundation of empirical science laid during the Enlightenment. This thesis looks at the Enlightenment both as a philosophical movement and as the setting of the Scientific Revolution. The leaders of the Enlightenment and Scientific Revolution began the tradition of utilizing reason in research, founded empirical science, and developed the scientific method. This thesis traces the development of science during the Enlightenment and seeks to prove that Enlightenment science set the stage for the science …
Containing The Dragon: The Rise Of Chinese Military Power And Its Effect On Us Foreign Policy, Robert William Eberhart
Containing The Dragon: The Rise Of Chinese Military Power And Its Effect On Us Foreign Policy, Robert William Eberhart
Honors Theses
In 2001, John Mearsheimer made a prediction that according to his theory of offensive realism, if Chinese military power continued to grow, the US would increase its military presence in East Asia in order to contain growth of Chinese power. Now in 2013, US military presence is slowly rising, appearing to prove Mearsheimer’s prediction. Therefore the question that needs to be asked is can offensive realism explain the current status of US-Chinese relations. By examining the changes in Chinese military developments by comparing unit sizes and amounts to the changes in military weapons developments, an integration rate can be formed …
The Refuge Of Fools, Merrill Lee Girardeau
The Refuge Of Fools, Merrill Lee Girardeau
Honors Theses
The main character of The Refitge of Fools, Mar>’ Canon Israel, resembles H.L. Mencken's iconoclast. Mencken v\Tites that an iconoclast uses an instinct that supersedes the logic of religion, a logic he calls "the refuge of fools." Known as M.C., Mar\- Canon attends a private Christian high school in the South. Instinct acute, however, she regards the "God concept" with extreme suspicion. The Refuge of Fools visits her junior year of high school, each chapter taken from a month of that year. Her lifelong friend Palmer wants to change the nature of their friendship but cannot decide whether to …
Theorizing Factors Influencing Missile Transfers: A Case Study If Sino-Iranian Missile Transfers And Implications For Regional Security, Paul Alexander Kynerd
Theorizing Factors Influencing Missile Transfers: A Case Study If Sino-Iranian Missile Transfers And Implications For Regional Security, Paul Alexander Kynerd
Honors Theses
Scholars suggest missiles have become the weapon of choice in modem warfare. Missiles are effective against a variety of targets, can travel long distances, and can decrease the need for troops to be engaged in conflict. Nations unable to mobilize large amounts of troops may depend on missiles to equalize military capabilities. Missile stockpiling also serves as a conflict deterrent. What factors influence missile sales between nations and what are the implications of those sales on regional security? This research broadly analyzes the effects of political, socioeconomic, conflict, temporal, and regional factors on global missile sales between 1980 and 2009, …

Human Rights In Transit: Nationality, Anti-Haitianism, And The Reactionary State In The Dominican Republic, Ryan Keith Ezelle
Human Rights In Transit: Nationality, Anti-Haitianism, And The Reactionary State In The Dominican Republic, Ryan Keith Ezelle
Honors Theses
The Dominican Republic and Haiti share a long and troubled history in which race, ethnicity, and culture have been the primary factors in each country’s contrasting national narrative and identity. For many decades Haitians living in the Dominican Republic and their descendants have suffered from lack of recognition from the Dominican government, but since the 1990s this ensuing condition of statelessness has become more widespread and has been greatly aggravated by several actions taken by the Dominican State. In the first decade of the 2000s, the State introduced new laws and policies, including the Law 285 on Immigration, the civil …
The Role Of Natural Products In Acidovorax Delafieldii Ath2-2rs/1 Survival In A Dry Formulation, David N. Thomas
The Role Of Natural Products In Acidovorax Delafieldii Ath2-2rs/1 Survival In A Dry Formulation, David N. Thomas
Honors Theses
If rhizobacteria are to be used for weed biocontrol, a practical means of storing them must be found. In this project I sought to use the natural products exopolysaccharide and hydroxygectoine to improve the survival of Acidovorax delafieldii dry formulated with either an oat flour, maltose, and trehalose formulation or Celite (diatomaceous earth). When formulated with the oat flour, maltose, and trehalose, the expolysaccharide allowed for modest survival after 24 hours of drying. Using Celite, a preferred carrier, hydroxyectoine led to bacterial populations of 6.2 x 10(4) cells / g formulation after 24 hours of drying after 48 hours of …
A Mathematical Model Describing The Dynamics Of Hiv Virions And Cd4+T Cells In The Human Immune System, Matthew Chacko
A Mathematical Model Describing The Dynamics Of Hiv Virions And Cd4+T Cells In The Human Immune System, Matthew Chacko
Honors Theses
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is an intracellular parasite that attacks cells of the immune system called CD4+T cells. In ecology the Lotka-Volterra models, a classical set of differential equations, describe three interactions between species in ecosystems: predator/prey, mutualism, and competition. The human body is also an ecosystem with HIV and T cells exhibiting the three Lotka-Volterra interactions with each other. I pose a mathematical model that predicts T cell/HIV dynamics by incorporating the three Lotka-Volterra interactions and other salient biological phenomena that influence the dynamics, such as T cell senescence and the presence of viral reserviors.
Photocatalysis Using Cdse Quantum Dots, Luis K. Garibay
Photocatalysis Using Cdse Quantum Dots, Luis K. Garibay
Honors Theses
In this project, we synthesized water soluble CdSe quantum dots (QDs) that photocatalyzed the reduction of reazurin to resorufin. Absorption spectra of the CdSe QDs in water solution is the same as in the toluene suspended QDs solution. The retention of optoelectric properties implies tht the QDs retain their chemical properties upon water solubilization. Absorption spectra also showed photoreduction of resazurin to resorufin after a period of light exposure only in the presence of quantum dots. These preliminary results suggest that CdSe quantum dots could be viable photocatalyst for productoion of hydrogen gas through the wate splitting reaction.

Honors Theses
This report outlines my contributions to ProTECTOR's Hawksbill turtle conservation project along the beachfront at Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge of Honduras. Observation-focused nightly beach patrols were conducted so as to census numbers of turtles nesting in this location presently and beach characteristic surveys were undertaken to create a map of environmental factors relevant to Hawksbill nesting along this beach. Resulting environmental maps were correlated with known factors contributing to Hawksbill nest site choice in order to assess the suitability of this beach for Hawksbill nesting, and thus determine its value for preservation efforts and ongoing funding. Of the 10 …
Spatial And Seasonal Variation In The Stable Isotopic Composition Of Thirteen-Lined Ground Squirrel Fecal Pellets As An Estimate Of Variation In Diet, Allie Chacko
Honors Theses
We performed stable isotope analyses of fecal pellets to investigate temporal and spatial patterns in the diet of free-ranging, thirteen-lined ground squirrels (Ictidomys tridecemlineatus). Samples were collected opportunistically from a population in SW Michigan from May to September 2012. We found a statistically significant increases in d13C values throughout the study period, possibly correlating to a late-season flush of C-4 plants. Also, samples collected within 25 m of a cornfield had a mean d13C value of -20.470%, a value significantly higher than those outside the 25 m border (mean=26.192%). This patternmay be indicative of a C-4 rich diet probably due …

Spatial And Seasonal Signals In Stable Isotopes Of Incisor Enamel From Free-Ranging, Thirteen-Lined Ground Squirrels, Jacob Andrew Brassington
Honors Theses
From early May through late September, 2012, we captured, tagged, and collected body masses from multiple, free-ranging thirteen-lined ground squirrels (Ictidomys tridecemlineatus) in southwestern Michigan, with 14 individuals recaptured 1 or more times through the season. Beginning in mid-June, we captured and euthanized 12 or these individuals (on average, about 1 per week) to allow study of their lower incisors. We serially micro-sampled enamel along squirrel incisors using laser ablation and determined stable isotope ratios (d13 and d18 O) with gas chromatography-isotope-ratio mass spectrometry (GC-IRMS). The resulting values fell into two spatial groups. Specimens collected within 25 m of a …
Cyanide Production By Pseudomonas Putida Ath2-1ri/9 Under Biofilm Conditions, Ranita Campbell
Cyanide Production By Pseudomonas Putida Ath2-1ri/9 Under Biofilm Conditions, Ranita Campbell
Honors Theses
The genus Pseudomonas is a group of gram-negative bacteria having great ecological diversity. Some species produce HCN which may harm plants. The purpose of this research is to determine whether a plant-associated strain o Pseudomonas putida has the ability to produce cyanide under biofilm conditions. Bacterial production of HCN could prove useful in weed control strategies. To obtain these results the experiment involved a six-day experimental scheme. My findings indicate that Pseudomonas putida does produce cyanide under biofilm conditions providing valuable information concerning cyanogenic bacteria especially in the Pseudomonas group.
Variation In The Calling Song Of The Cricket Gryllus Pennsylvanicus Across Geographic Longitudinal Change, Ioana Danci
Variation In The Calling Song Of The Cricket Gryllus Pennsylvanicus Across Geographic Longitudinal Change, Ioana Danci
Honors Theses
Variation of cricket calling songs can be attributed to environmental factors, including temperature, humidity, vegetation, season, solar elevation, and geographic location. Recent studies found that latitudinal position affects the calling song of male Gryllus pennsylvanicus. My project evaluates whether longitudinal position influences the calling song of G. pennsylvanicus. Using the predicted values of 4 song features based on a mathematical model (Burden 2009), I evaluated data from 6 locatons along a longitudinal axis. I calculated R2 values to determine how well the model predicted the values in my sample populations. The model was found to be a poor predictor.
Light Intensity And Time Of Day Influence Female Acheta Domesticus Phonotaxis, John Hyun-Sik Ahn
Light Intensity And Time Of Day Influence Female Acheta Domesticus Phonotaxis, John Hyun-Sik Ahn
Honors Theses
Positive phonotaxis occurs when a female cricket walks toward the source of an auditory stimulus. This study tested the effects of light intensity and time of day on phonotaxis of female Acheta domesticus. First, females were tested at four times of day; second, under three light intensities; and third, under four combinations of light intensity and time of day. Our results show that these two factors combined exert a more pronounced effect on female A. domesticus selectivity than either factor individually, and subsequent research will test these factors against the current neuronal model for SP-selective phonotaxis.
Localization Of Carboxypeptidase O In Madin-Darby Canine Kidney Cells, Donnel Dockery
Localization Of Carboxypeptidase O In Madin-Darby Canine Kidney Cells, Donnel Dockery
Honors Theses
Carboxypeptidases are enzymes that trim the carboxy-terminal ends of proteins. Carboxypeptidase O (CPO) is a recently discovered enzyme that was proposed to be associated with lipid droplets. Lipid droplets are organelles found in the cytosol of the cell that carry out different roles like storing metabolic energy and protein degradation. To test if CPO and lipid droplets were associated, we used immunocytochemistry and lipid droplet staining of Madin-Darby canince kidney (MDCK) cells. Our data shows that lipid droplets can be detected with both BODIPY 493/503 and Nile Blue dye. CPO is associated with lipid droplets, but CPO does not affect …
Effect Of Latrunculin B On Phonotaxis In Induced Selective Crickets Treated With Jhiii (Acheta Domesticus), Jerome Martin
Effect Of Latrunculin B On Phonotaxis In Induced Selective Crickets Treated With Jhiii (Acheta Domesticus), Jerome Martin
Honors Theses
The purpose of this experiment is to determine the effect of the actin kinase inhibitor, latrunculin B, on previously unselective crickets. We expected the injecion of a mixture of latrunculin B and juvenile hormones (JHIII) into the prothoracic ganglion would cause a reduction in the affect of JHIII in older crickets, causing them to remain unselective. Based on the results we can conclude that latrunculin B reduces the effect of JHIII, which indicates that creating new synapses is at least a partial effect of JHIII.
Comparisons Of Cultural Identities In Relation To Poverty, Amanda A. Corea
Comparisons Of Cultural Identities In Relation To Poverty, Amanda A. Corea
Honors Theses
This research focuses on how one's cultural identity relates to their attitudes towards those in poverty and what they attribute to be the causes of poverty. Correlation and difference tests were run on data collected from questionnaires completed by a convenient sample. Beliefs about poverty and patterns of attitudes demonstrated in various culture groups were analyzed. The hypothesis that cultural identity relates to attributions and attitudes toward poverty based on learned cultural attitudes was partially supported. Significant differences were found between different cultural identity groups for both attributions and attitudes.
Taphonomic Effects Of Fire On Ostrich And Emu Eggshell, Shelley J. Mclarty
Taphonomic Effects Of Fire On Ostrich And Emu Eggshell, Shelley J. Mclarty
Honors Theses
Dinosaur eggshell and evidence for wildfires are common in the fossil record. The effects of fire on ostrich and emu eggshell, modern analogs for dinosaur eggshell, were examined by burning fragments in flames of two different temperature ranges for a series of time intervals. Percent mass loss increased directly with both time and temperature. Different treatment conditions also displayed regular patterns of change in color and curvature. Exposure of eggshell to flame results in dramatic physical changes, knowlegde of which could be useful to paleontologists studying dinosaur nesting ecology.
What Women Want: Masculine Images And Gender Construction In The Old Spice And Dos Equis Ad Campaigns, Ashley Meyer
What Women Want: Masculine Images And Gender Construction In The Old Spice And Dos Equis Ad Campaigns, Ashley Meyer
Honors Theses
The award-winning Dos Equis "The most interesting man in the world" and Old Spice "the man your man could smell like" campaigns are unique not only for their creativity and humor, but also for their portrait of ideal men. These campaigns propose idealized images of masculinity which engage societal conceptions of manhood in the 21st century. Using rhetorical criticism, we can identify underlying ideologies in these campaigns, which combine the traditional and modern masculine constructs to present a new identity that aims but ultimately fails to be universally pleasing. The campaigns also reinforce sexist views of women as childlike and …

When Cultures Collide: A Comparative Study Of The Culinary Cultures Of Uruguay And The Lebanese Community In The Mississippi Delta, Claire Nicola Reid
Honors Theses
Every world culture defines itself differently through the application of similar qualifying processes. Gastronomy is an important one of these processes. This thesis aims to explain how food both aids in and exists as a reflection of cultural identity by asking these questions: What are the specifics of how gastronomical processes are applied in Uruguay and the Mississippi Delta? Do the two regions share similar cultural identification structures? If so, in what ways are they similar, and what do these similarities mean in the context of identity construction? In doing this, | aim to explain why culinary practices, more so …
And Myrrh, Cassia, And Frankincense Rode On The Wind A Detailed Look At The Aromatic And Spice Trade Of The Classical Mediterranean, Forrest Colby Roberts
And Myrrh, Cassia, And Frankincense Rode On The Wind A Detailed Look At The Aromatic And Spice Trade Of The Classical Mediterranean, Forrest Colby Roberts
Honors Theses
This Thesis studies the trade in spices and aromatics in the Mediterranean during the 5th and 4th centuries B.C. It will examine in particular frankincense, myrrh, cinnamon, cassia, and silphium. Through a the use of ancient authors, modem scholarship, and archaeological data this thesis will seek to show that although evidence for this trade in the Classical period is less plentiful than in other times, a Classical trade did exist. This work will also argue that spices were a part of the Classical period Greek market, and that these products were being consumed as luxury goods in order to showcase …
