Winter Ecology And Behavior Of Eastern Towhees At Taylor Fork Ecological Area, Megan Martin
Winter Ecology And Behavior Of Eastern Towhees At Taylor Fork Ecological Area, Megan Martin
Honors Theses
The Eastern Towhee (Pipilo erythropthalmus) is a type of sparrow, which has declined in number by about 50% since the mid-1960s. Since both their summer and winter habitat use is affected by changes in the prevailing vegetation, it is possible that the declining populations are a result of factors in both breeding and nonbreeding seasons. The objective of the study was to describe the behavior, habitat use, and foraging habits of the Eastern Towhee during the winter at a site in central Kentucky. Nine Towhees were captured, radio-tagged, and tracked using homing and triangulation for a total of …
The Calusa And Early Spanish Settlement: An Archaeological-Historic Analysis Of Early European Contact In Southern Florida, Rylan Cromer
The Calusa And Early Spanish Settlement: An Archaeological-Historic Analysis Of Early European Contact In Southern Florida, Rylan Cromer
Honors Theses
In 1513 Juan Ponce de León led an expedition force to explore the western coastline of Florida as part of a mission for the Spanish Crown to map the Gulf of Mexico and determine the capability of the area to potentially support Spanish colonization attempts. Instead, León established first contact with a powerful native society that successfully drove León and his fleet of three ships from their shores with nothing more than bows and basic dugout canoes. For nearly a century afterward, the mere presence of these people, the Calusa, was enough to limit Spanish settlement to the Eastern coastline …
Women In Gaming: A Study Of Female Players’ Experiences In Online Fps Games, M Allison Mcdaniel
Women In Gaming: A Study Of Female Players’ Experiences In Online Fps Games, M Allison Mcdaniel
Honors Theses
Existing literature has long been divided over whether the gaming world fosters violence and misogyny or provides a space for people to explore diverse identities. Not enough is known about how women experience videogames, especially the hypermasculine environment of first-person shooter (FPS) games. Competition, violence, and war, are dominant features of these games. The following thesis explores what harassment and discrimination women playing FPS games face, how they respond, and in what ways they find games to be empowering. A survey was distributed online to an international sample of 141 female FPS gamers. This research finds that women who play …
Protein Residue-Residue Contact Prediction Using Stacked Denoising Autoencoders, Joseph Bailey Luttrell Iv
Protein Residue-Residue Contact Prediction Using Stacked Denoising Autoencoders, Joseph Bailey Luttrell Iv
Honors Theses
Protein residue-residue contact prediction is one of many areas of bioinformatics research that aims to assist researchers in the discovery of structural features of proteins. Predicting the existence of such structural features can provide a starting point for studying the tertiary structures of proteins. This has the potential to be useful in applications such as drug design where tertiary structure predictions may play an important role in approximating the interactions between drugs and their targets without expending the monetary resources necessary for preliminary experimentation. Here, four different methods involving deep learning, support vector machines (SVMs), and direct coupling analysis were …

Assessing The Feasibility Of A One-Pot, Tandem Olefin Metathesis And Isomerization Sequence To Synthesize Conjugated Aromatic Olefins, Ajay D. Makwana
Honors Theses
The synthesis of substituted phenylpropene dimers using a one-pot, tandem olefin metathesis and isomerization sequence has been studied. This sequence relies on the facilitated, in-situ conversion of a ruthenium carbene species (Ru=C) to a ruthenium hydride species (Ru-H) upon addition of an inorganic hydride source. Three separate reactions occur within one reaction flask: 1) olefin metathesis of the starting phenylpropene to yield phenylpropene dimer via Ru=C catalyst, 2) conversion of Ru=C to Ru-H via addition of an inorganic hydride source, 3) isomerization of phenylpropene dimer via insertion and β-hydride elimination to yield conjugated product. The focus of the study has …
The Phenology And Compatibility Of Hazelnut (Corylus Avellana) Cultivars In Tennessee, Ben Nigel Heard
The Phenology And Compatibility Of Hazelnut (Corylus Avellana) Cultivars In Tennessee, Ben Nigel Heard
Honors Theses
The European hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.), is an important temperate zone nut tree species for which there is an expanding demand worldwide. Historically, the Eastern filbert blight disease (EFB), caused by the ascomycete fungus Anisogramma anomala, has prevented commercial hazelnut growing in Tennessee. As part of a UTC hazelnut cultivar trial, EFB resistant hazelnut cultivars and numbered selections from Oregon State University and Burnt Ridge Nursery were planted in 2003 at Smith Farm in Ooltewah, TN. Hazelnut trees are wind-pollinated, dichogamous, and self-incompatible, which means they are not self-fertile, their male and female blossoms may open at different times, and …

This honors thesis investigates the use of stereotypes used to portray Black women on reality television. Focusing on Bravo’s Blood Sweat and Heels, this project utilizes an Afrosemiotic framework, which is a combination of Afrocentricity and Semiotics. Afrocentricity focuses on the agency and consciousness of Africans and African Americans. Semiotics focuses on the study of signs and the explicit and implicit markers of these signs. The first season’s narrative focuses on the positive lives of single, successful Black women but shifts to mainly negative portrayals inspired by Bravo’s Real Housewives franchise. This project focuses on stereotypes associated with Black …
Learning And Memory In A Drosophila Melanogaster Model Of Alzheimer's Disease, Eric Robles
Learning And Memory In A Drosophila Melanogaster Model Of Alzheimer's Disease, Eric Robles
Honors Theses
Human Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent and lethal neurodegenerative disease; it involves the accumulation of neurofibrillary tangles, loss of synapses and neurons in specific areas of the brain, and the presence of extracellular amyloid plaques, particularly Amyloid beta-42 (AP-42). In this study, two Drosophila transgenic fly lines carrying either elav-GAL4 driver or UAS-AP-42 transgene, were crossed to generate AD flies that expressed low levels of human Ap-42. Male AD flies (experimental) and elav-GAL4 flies (as parental control without AP-42) were tested for learning and short-term memory using the courtship suppression assay (Siegal and Hall, 1979). The courtship suppression …

The intention was to give the CHEM 372 students a goal to work toward over the course of the semester instead of different, unrelated, experiments each week. Using this style of lab teaching, the students were introduced to graduate school-level …
Phase Space Simulation Of Relativistic Twisted Electron Mott Scattering, John K. Madsen
Phase Space Simulation Of Relativistic Twisted Electron Mott Scattering, John K. Madsen
Honors Theses
The question of how the spin of the proton and neutron arise from the angular momentum of the constituent partons is very pressing in the study of nuclear structure. As of yet, there has been no experimental method able to directly probe the angular momentum states of quarks. However, in recent years, several groups have shown that it is possible to produce coherent beams of electrons which carry definite, quantized units of Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM). These "twisted" electrons have the potential to be applied to nuclear scattering experiments, as using the twistedness as an experimental degree of freedom may …

The Influence Of Task Specific Factors On Quantity Discrimination By Brown Capuchins (Cebus Apella) And Squirrel Monkeys (Saimiri Sciureus), Alison Rose Billas
Honors Theses
Previous studies have revealed that non-human primates discriminate quantities. However, their performance is highly variable both within and between species. Discrepancies in performance may be the result of a variety of factors, including species-specific cognitive differences or task specific factors such as representational format of the choice stimuli, motivation to perform that task, or tolerance for task delays. Six brown capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella) and six squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) were presented with two numerical quantities in three different conditions, replicating Schmitt and Fischer's (2011) study with baboons and macaques. Primates were rewarded with a quantity of food corresponding in …

Rescuing Victims Of Human Trafficking: Strategies And Solutions, Andrew J. Pullins
Rescuing Victims Of Human Trafficking: Strategies And Solutions, Andrew J. Pullins
Honors Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to research and investigate how victims of human trafficking are removed from exploitative situations. There are three main methods of removal, which are raids, purchases, and escapes. Each method has its own unique characteristics, advantages and disadvantages. The research was conducted in the form of a literature review. The findings of this research indicate that there is no one “right” way to rescue a victim of human trafficking. Each rescue must be carefully researched and planned before being executed, or the consequences can be severe.
Impact Of Single Amino Acid Mutations In The Rhomboid Protease Pcp1p On Pcp1p Catalytic Activity, Cellular Respiration, Mitochondrial Morphology, And Mitochondrial Dna Maintenance, Andries Pieter Both
Impact Of Single Amino Acid Mutations In The Rhomboid Protease Pcp1p On Pcp1p Catalytic Activity, Cellular Respiration, Mitochondrial Morphology, And Mitochondrial Dna Maintenance, Andries Pieter Both
Honors Theses
Pcp1p is a rhomboid protease in the inner mitochondrial membrane of S. cerevisiae that processes Mgm1p, a protein required for mitochondrial fusion. In this study, five previously generated pcp1 mutant strains were analyzed for mitochondrial respiration, genome maintenance, and tubularization. We found that mutations that introduced a charged residue into Pcp1p resulted in a higher degree of respiratory deficiency, mtDNA loss, mitochondrial fragmentation, and possible mitochondrial membrane potential loss. Furthermore, these mutant phenotypes paralleled an increase in an aberrant form of Mgm1p that accumulates in the absence of wild type Pcp1p. This raises questions about the biogenesis of aberrant Mgm1p …
Determining Methods Of Propagation For The Investigation Of Intraspecific Variability Of Climate Change Responses Of Appalachian Plant Species, Gayle L. Tyree
Determining Methods Of Propagation For The Investigation Of Intraspecific Variability Of Climate Change Responses Of Appalachian Plant Species, Gayle L. Tyree
Honors Theses
Species range migrations are a well-documented response to climate change (Loarie et al. 2009), with range shifts mainly occurring poleward or to higher elevations (Walther et al. 2002). As range shifts occur, variation in phenotypic traits within plant species across climate gradients could affect their abilities to acclimate or adapt to a changing climate (Hooper et al. 2005, Souza et al. 2011). In 2014 Dr. Jennifer Boyd (BGES) initiated a research project to examine potential intraspecific phenotypic variation within wide-ranging Appalachian plant species of responses to projected future atmospheric CO2 and temperature regimes. As an undergraduate research assistant, I focused …

Uncovering Cryptic Diversity Of Desmognathine Salamanders In The Cumberland Plateau Utilizing Molecular Genetic Techniques, Katherine E. Ray
Honors Theses
Cryptic species are difficult to identify morphologically; therefore, their distributions are often poorly understood. However, species distributions are critical for evaluating biodiversity in ecology and biodiversity. Dusky salamanders (Desmognathus) are an example of species of North American salamanders that have been particularly difficult to classify. Specifically, in the southern Cumberland Plateau, the dusky salamanders’ distributions are unknown. Desmognathus fuscus and D. conanti have been found to the north and south of the southern Cumberland Plateau, respectively. However, they have not been adequately sampled in this region. I studied genetic variation in the mitochondrial gene CytB in Desmognathus salamanders sampled from …

Elucidation Of The Triacylglycerol Biosynthetic Pathway Within The Leaves Of Transgenic Tobacco Plants, Hunter M. Hawkins
Elucidation Of The Triacylglycerol Biosynthetic Pathway Within The Leaves Of Transgenic Tobacco Plants, Hunter M. Hawkins
Honors Theses
The demand for plant oils is increasing exponentially, which poses a problem as the resources required to produce plant oils are limited. In an effort to alleviate this problem, transgenic tobacco plants that are producing TAG yields of 15% by weight in non-seed tissues have been engineered (Vanhercke et al. 2014). In order to achieve even higher oil yields, the pathway that contributes to TAG synthesis in the leaves of these plants needed to be determined. There are three potential pathways that could contribute to TAG synthesis. In order to determine which of these was the major contributor, metabolic tracing …

The Manifestation Of Blight: Examining The Effects Of Inner City Decline On Populations In The Bronx, New York And New Orleans, Louisiana, Bianca R. Stewart
Honors Theses
Urban decline, and the developments that trigger a collapse among formerly prosperous cities, is a phenomenon that is capable of leaving a lasting mark on any urban system. The collapse and disintegration of the urban landscape carries a variety of facilitators, and with that, this research sought to examine two distinct representations of urban decline and the populations that shifted in tandem with blight: the New York City fiscal crisis of the 1970s and post-Katrina conditions in New Orleans, Louisiana. Through New York City’s fiscal crisis and the act of condensing a city in hopes of rectifying urban decline, known …
Investigation Of How Hydrogen Bonding Affects The Enantiomeric Excess Of Pig Liver Esterase Promoted Hydrolysis Of Pro-Chiral Substrates, Jacob E. Pruett
Investigation Of How Hydrogen Bonding Affects The Enantiomeric Excess Of Pig Liver Esterase Promoted Hydrolysis Of Pro-Chiral Substrates, Jacob E. Pruett
Honors Theses
Pig Liver Esterase is a cost effective enzyme for ester hydrolysis. In our group, it is vital for creating chiral molecules for the synthesis of unnatural amino acids of potential biological importance. It has been previously found that the enantiomeric excess (%ee) of the PLE hydrolysis reaction increases drastically with the addition of co-solvents that are able to both accept and donate hydrogen bonds. This research endeavors to see if substrates of enhanced hydrogen bonding ability also increase the stereoselectivity of PLE hydrolyses. Diester malonate was covalently linked with a furan ring in both the third and second position from …
