Erik Satie And His Influence On Music In France In The Twentieth Century, Lindsey Peters
Erik Satie And His Influence On Music In France In The Twentieth Century, Lindsey Peters
Honors Theses
In nearly every period in musical history that is marked by dramatic change in thought and composition, there emerge figures whose contribution lies more in the philosophical and aesthetic influence than in the actual music they produced. It was true of the Florentine Camerata, whose influence did not reach musical fruition until Monteverdi. In late nineteenth and early twentieth century France, Erik Satie was a harbinger of directions French music was to take in the next fifty years. Although his music exhibits many advanced techniques, ideas revealed in Satie’s writings and conversations with artists of all media were influential in …
The Sherman Adams Case, Jean A. Scott
The Sherman Adams Case, Jean A. Scott
Honors Theses
In my study of the events culminating in the resignation of Sherman Adams from the position of Assistant to the President in 1958, I have endeavored to deal with three factors: the Adams-Goldfine relationship studied by the Congressional committee, the politicians' reaction to the information disclosed there, and the position taken by national publications. I have included a brief statement of Adams' early life and his duties as Assistant to the President for background purposes, but otherwise, I have brought in material about the man himself or the Eisenhower administration only as it relates to the case.
Adams' contacts with …
Air Force Rotc At The University Of Richmond, 1951-1957, Robert J. Dandridge
Air Force Rotc At The University Of Richmond, 1951-1957, Robert J. Dandridge
Honors Theses
In the summer of 1950, after the seriousness of the Korean conflict had become evident, a special committee appointed three years earlier by the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees was reactivated for the purpose of considering "the feasibility of applying for a Reserve Office Training Corps unit" for the University of Richmond. This special committee, called the ROTC Committee, after thorough study, rendered a unanimous recommendation to the Board that a unit of Army ROTC be applied for. The application was completed and mailed to the Department of the Army. Approval of the application was not long in …
Historiography In India: A Study Of The Muslims As The First Historiographers In India, Judith L. Clawson
Historiography In India: A Study Of The Muslims As The First Historiographers In India, Judith L. Clawson
Honors Theses
Prior to my visit last summer, I was virtually unacquainted with India. Granted, when India was mentioned a few general images would come to mind: world's largest democracy, partition, Gandhi, yoga, population and starvation, Hinduism, no history. The seminar afforded an opportunity to look into these vague ideas of mine.
The Alliance For Progress: Policy Continuation Or Actual Reform?, Mario Mion
The Alliance For Progress: Policy Continuation Or Actual Reform?, Mario Mion
Honors Theses
The Alliance for Progress appears to falter within its own objectives. As such this is not unique to this aid program; other programs have encountered difficulties in their operation. However, the extent of the Alliance's failure to meet its stated goals raises the question of the efficacy of the program itself and, what is more significant, of the intent of the Alliance as a program of aid and as a tool for reform. In fact, the operational or mechanical difficulties per se are not surprising considering the obstacles Involved. Traditionally divergent economic and political patterns and social attitudes, here in …
The Depression Years As Depicted By The American Theatre In The 1930'S, Lois Robinson
The Depression Years As Depicted By The American Theatre In The 1930'S, Lois Robinson
Honors Theses
The purpose of this paper is to show how various plays written in the 1930's reflected economic, political, religious, social, psychological, moral and ethical attitudes of the depression years. To achieve this and, the writer gathered material from the ten Pulitzer Prize winning plays of the 1930's, as well as other significant works of the decade as mentioned in secondary sources. No effort has been made to fit these plays into the time in which they were written. Instead, the writer has attempted to show the times as they were presented by the dramatists of the thirties.
Alexander Spotswood's Struggle With His Council, Joan Schools
Alexander Spotswood's Struggle With His Council, Joan Schools
Honors Theses
The condition of Virginia in 1710 was depressed, both politically and economically. A royal colony, Virginia nevertheless had been establishing her own common laws and "ancient" practices, at the the same time that English control was becoming increasingly inefficient. The situation worsened during the administrations of Edmund Andros and Francis Nicholson and reach a minor climax during the four-year interregnum which began in 1706 and lasted until Spotswood assumed leadership of the government in 1710.
During this period when lack of a royal governor placed colonial affairs in the hands of the Virginia Council and its president, the work of …
United States Opinion From Munich To The Blitzkreig, Barbara Evans
United States Opinion From Munich To The Blitzkreig, Barbara Evans
Honors Theses
In the late nineteen-thirties "isolationism" determined American attitudes toward Europe. Basically, the term, used to describe that period, refers to the beliefs which decreed that the United States should have no part in foreign quarrels.
This paper will attempt to analyze the feelings of the majority of Americans. Many men counseled non-involvement for many reasons, and extremists ranged from the Catholic priest, Father Coughlin, a man with definite pro-German sympathies, to Charles A. Lindberg, who thought that Hitler could not be beaten. Attention here will not be directed at these extremely small fringe groups, but at the "average" American, as …
The Aaron Burr Trial, Claudia Bell
The Aaron Burr Trial, Claudia Bell
Honors Theses
The Aaron Burr trial was one of the most interesting cases in American history. Not only was the testimony at th einquiry significant but all events leading to the trial were important. Only those occurrences in Burr's life which led to his trial are described, since personal situations have no bearing on the case. The trial itself has been done with as much detail as possible in order to make the outcome of the inquest understandable.
The Relationship Of John Cotton And Anne Hutchinson In The Antinomian Controversy, Lois R. Helmbold
The Relationship Of John Cotton And Anne Hutchinson In The Antinomian Controversy, Lois R. Helmbold
Honors Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the Antinomian controversy in Massachusetts Bay, in terms of the relationship between the principal figures of the struggle, John Cotton and Anne Hutchinson. A by-product has been an analysis of the controversy in terms of its relationship to the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
All direct quotations have been cited exactly as they appear in the sources, including original grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
Virginia's Initial Reactions To The Brown V. Board Of Education Decision, Charles E. Poston
Virginia's Initial Reactions To The Brown V. Board Of Education Decision, Charles E. Poston
Honors Theses
In writing this paper I have examined the initial reaction of Virginia's leaders to the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in the Brown v. Board of Education suit. My study begins with announcement of the decision on May 17, 1952. As the weeks passed on the Commonwealth of Virginia gradually changed her course, experimented with expedients, and set her mind on the course of resistance. the General Assembly proved this fact by adopting the Resolution of Interposition on February 1, 1956. A natural termination date for the paper is reached at this point.
Throughout the paper there has been no effort …
The Moderate Period Of The Temperance Reform, 1776-1833, Edith C. Burrows
The Moderate Period Of The Temperance Reform, 1776-1833, Edith C. Burrows
Honors Theses
Temperance is an organized reform began at the end of the American Revolutionary War, its leaders inspired by the ravages dealt by alcoholics to the soldiers and sailors. At first self-control was desired; later self-denial was its dominant theme. Limited as it was, the temperance crusade, led by the aristocracy and the clergy, was naturally gradual in acquiring acceptance and strength. The course of its development from the 1780's until the mid-1830's was one of moderate demands, as compared with the later extremism, and one led by the fiery clerics and their assemblies, compared to the later common lay leadership.
Poor Relief In Tudor England, Edith Burrows
Poor Relief In Tudor England, Edith Burrows
Honors Theses
In many respects the sixteenth century in England marks the beginning of a definite acceleration toward modern humanitarianism. It was an era characterized by the slow decline and definite disappearance of all aspects of manorial society. The progressive changes in institutions and the way of thinking reciprocally aided each other, hastening the rise of a new, more humane society. The reforms, at first hesitant and cautious, were by the end of the century confident and deliberate.
The Establishment Of The Baptists In England In The Early Part Of The Seventeenth Century, Eugenia Henderson
The Establishment Of The Baptists In England In The Early Part Of The Seventeenth Century, Eugenia Henderson
Honors Theses
In 1558 with the accession of a Protestant Queen on the throne, England had the appearance of religious freedom. Around 1559 Dutch and Flemish dissenters emigrated to England bringing with them Baptist beliefs. Elizabeth's religious policy, however, was not one of toleration. Not being a religious zealot, she desired a workable religious situation. As a result the Elizabethan Settlement was a compromise and came to mean no religious liberty but no inquisition. In 1559 Elizabeth became Supreme Governor of the Anglican Church in the Act of Supremacy. The Act of Uniformity passed in the same year forced the people to …
Latitudinarianism From Acontius To Chillingworth, Ann Mccauley Askew
Latitudinarianism From Acontius To Chillingworth, Ann Mccauley Askew
Honors Theses
Increasing strife and disunity developed in religious matters in England after 1600. Simultaneously moderate men became increasingly concerned about the future of unified Christianity. Probably the most systematic and religiously conscious of the solutions offered resulted from the work three dedicated laymen, the Latitudinarians.

A Summary Of Existing Rural Land Use Legislation In Virginia, John W. Russell
A Summary Of Existing Rural Land Use Legislation In Virginia, John W. Russell
Honors Theses
This study is an attempt to bring related statutes together concerning land use in Virginia, presenting them in a simplified manner so that they can be read and understood by the layman. It is intended by no means to be taken as authoritative nor complete in detail. For the details and omission made herein, the Code of Virginia should be consulted.
Persons who are interested in conservation and development both local and state, may find here what laws exist in Virginia, that may be applied to land planning.
A Puritan And His Devil : Religious Conflict Between William Prynne And William Laud, 1625-1645, Faye Newton
A Puritan And His Devil : Religious Conflict Between William Prynne And William Laud, 1625-1645, Faye Newton
Honors Theses
In the period between 1625 and 1645, William Prynne "issued nearly a score of tracts," attacking English prelacy in general and William Laud in particular, twice suffered the severest of penalties next to death, endured lengthy imprisonment, and vanquished one of England's most powerful men, all in the name of militant Puritanism. During those twenty years, Prynne's savage but effective pen was directed almost solely to one holy end, the irrevocable defeat of the Laudian interpretation of worship by the English successors of Calvin. For Prynne there could be no thought of compromise. The forces of darkness were at work …
Planning And Democracy In France, Larry G. Massanari
Planning And Democracy In France, Larry G. Massanari
Honors Theses
In the beginning of 1962, France launched its Fourth Plan to cover the period 1962-1965, and entered its sixteenth year of economic planning, Parodoxically, France which has so frequently seemed determined to demonstrate to the world an absolute incapacity for self-government has at the same time carried out a complicated experiment in economic planning, the results of which have frequently been brilliant; this is not to suggest that through planning the French have found answers to all of the many difficulties which still face them. It was immediately after World War II that France embarked upon their experiment in planning. …
The Teamsters Union Under Hoffa, Donnalee Rowe
The Teamsters Union Under Hoffa, Donnalee Rowe
Honors Theses
The labor union has reached a crisis today. In the last two decades labor costs have risen to a point from which they can rise little higher. Yet the number and complexity of labor problems has increased with automation and the consequent unemployment. To find an answer, the union has turned to the philosophy of business unionism. In the long this will only serve to increase the restrictions places on unions and will ultimately destroy their sense of social responsibility. The rank and file member, a reflection of the society in which he lives, has the immediate responsibility to save …
Mary Baker G. Eddy : A Preparation, A Discovery And A Culmination, G. Elaine Johnson
Mary Baker G. Eddy : A Preparation, A Discovery And A Culmination, G. Elaine Johnson
Honors Theses
In a study of any religion, particularly Christian Science, it is difficult to find unbiased and historical source material. Therefore the student must accept prejudiced views and make his own judgment on value and authenticity. In such a manner the research and execution of this paper have been completed. Although personal opinions have been included, they have been based on the material presented by both advocates of and antagonists to Mrs. Eddy.
To determine the scope of this paper, it was necessary to find the culmination of her discovery before the actual organization of her church began to form. Although …
Ben Jonson's Anti-Puritanism, Pamela A. Mcelwain
Ben Jonson's Anti-Puritanism, Pamela A. Mcelwain
Honors Theses
Although history has caused the satirist Ben Jonson and his witty plays to be swallowed up in the genius of his colleague, dramatist Will Shakespeare, in Elizabethan England the two were considered of similar stature. Ben Jonson, charismatic, antagonistic, conflicted, was a person of little subtlety, but of considerable interest for many. It becomes quickly evident from the characters in his plays Bartholomew Fair and The Alchemist that he developed an antipathy to the Puritans of his day. Ben Jonson, the convert to Catholicism, seemed to take personally the antics and forays of those who claimed their goal was to …
The Leveller Influence In The New Model Army From 1647 To 1649, G. Elaine Johnson
The Leveller Influence In The New Model Army From 1647 To 1649, G. Elaine Johnson
Honors Theses
Although the scope of this paper, from February of 1647 to January of 1649, would seem rather limited, the actual impact of Leveller principles and methods was felt during this short span of time. After the final Agreement of the People in early 1649, the movement seemed to center around personal attacks, reiteration of previous ideas, and defensive measures. The establishment of the Commonwealth, under the thumb of Oliver Cromwell, left behind all the Leveller plans of government, which had been discussed and approved by the Agitators and the Army Council.
Other aspects of the Leveller movement, such as their …
Khrushchev's Secret Speech And The Aftermath, Donnalee Rowe
Khrushchev's Secret Speech And The Aftermath, Donnalee Rowe
Honors Theses
Three years after the death of Stalin, Khrushchev presented before the Twentieth Party Congress of the Soviet Union, a secret speech, condemning Stalin and the development of the cult of the individual around him. In so doing, he promised to return to the Marxist-Leninist principles and to collective leadership. I shall try, in this paper, to summarize the various changes that have occurred within the years succeeding the speech. I shall try to show that there has been no basic change in the Soviet system of government, but that some controls have been relaxed and the method of control has …
Mercy Warren : Forgotten Patriot, Grace Rowell Phelps
Mercy Warren : Forgotten Patriot, Grace Rowell Phelps
Honors Theses
Among those who may have been loudest in their
protests against the Winthrop viewpoint that women should
not use their wits were those who knew Mercy Warren. This remarkable woman had the education, the interest and the social prominence necessary to excel in a man's world and her contributions
although now forgotten were important in the age
in which she lived.
The Sociology Of Emile Durkheim, Patricia Chewning Young
The Sociology Of Emile Durkheim, Patricia Chewning Young
Honors Theses
Sociology, the science of society, is an academic discipline. As a social science it is concerned with the acquisition of knowledge, rather than with the reform of individuals or of society. Sociologists, however, are not indifferent to the attempts made by men to improve the conditions of human life. The French sociologist Emile Durkheim firmly believed that the knowledge acquired through the scientific investigation of society could be used to help men build a better tomorrow, but that this sound Imowledge was needed before any type of social reform could be effective. Durkheim's conception of society gave him an indelible …
An Introduction To John Dowland's Lute Songs, Anne Laverne Morrow
An Introduction To John Dowland's Lute Songs, Anne Laverne Morrow
Honors Theses
Even a brief glance at the context of John Dowland's life can be helpful in arranging insights into an introductory understanding of his life and music. Dr. Edmud Fellowes, one of the great scholars of this period of music history, said that the English have always appeared to prefer vocal music over instrumental music. And one of the eras when England "stood first in music", he said was during the Elizabethan days and up to the close of the Tudor period.
Before the great flourishing of the madrigals and lute songs in England there were English secular songs, but little …
College Life In Ante-Bellum Virginia, Diane Keith Light
College Life In Ante-Bellum Virginia, Diane Keith Light
Honors Theses
In comparison with contemporary collegiate experiences, college life in ante-bellum Virginia offers many contrasts. The college curriculum, teaching methods, student regulations, and behavior were manifestations of nineteenth century thought. These facets combined to form the existence of the institution and its inhabitants.
The Public Career Of Robert Carter Nicholas, Robert Miller Saunders
The Public Career Of Robert Carter Nicholas, Robert Miller Saunders
Honors Theses
Although time has obscured his reputation, Robert carter Nicholas exercised considerable influence in pre-Revolutionary Virginia. Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, George Washington and other familiar revolutionary figures knew him well and respected both his ability and integrity. In fact, Nicholas had already established himself as a power in Virginia politics when the men mentioned above were just stepping onto the stage of Virginia history.
The Symbolism Of The Holy Grail : A Comparative Analysis Of The Grail In Perceval Ou Le Conte Del Graal By Chretien De Troyes And Parzival By Wolfram Von Eschenbach, Karin Elizabeth Nordenhaug
The Symbolism Of The Holy Grail : A Comparative Analysis Of The Grail In Perceval Ou Le Conte Del Graal By Chretien De Troyes And Parzival By Wolfram Von Eschenbach, Karin Elizabeth Nordenhaug
Honors Theses
Both works, Chretien's and Wolfram’s, are literary masterpieces of the Middle Ages. The story of the Grail can be placed along side of Dante's Commedia in symbolical content. Like most medieval writings the Grail romances are full of allegory, remote allusions to symbolic relationships, and striking analogies, all of which leave us with a sense of wonder and amazement. First of all we wonder whether or not a connection, which we might find symbolical was put there accidentally or not; we wonder whether we are seeing too much or too little symbolic value. It is characteristic of the authors never …
