Rare adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are underrecognized and underreported in the electronic medical record (EMR). These events often require clinical review, making systematic identification challenging. The study aim was to develop an approach to prioritize identification and validation of a rare ADR to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole causing acute respiratory distress syndrome (TMP-SMX ARDS) across medical institutions. We developed a clinical phenotype based on 2 local TMP-SMX ARDS cases mapped to standardized elements of a national comparative healthcare database (PHIS). We validated identification of TMP-SMX ARDS at scale across medical institutions. A set of scoring criteria was created to prioritize cases and generate …

The Pharmacogene Variation Consortium (PharmVar) provides nomenclature for the highly polymorphic human CYP1A2 gene. CYP1A2 plays a crucial role in the biotransformation of several commonly used drugs, including antipsychotics, antidepressants, anxiolytics, and methylxanthines. The activity of CYP1A2 varies significantly among individuals due to genetic and non-genetic factors. This GeneFocus paper offers an overview of the functional significance of CYP1A2 in drug metabolism, CYP1A2 genetic variation, and presents the updated PharmVar star allele-based nomenclature for CYP1A2. Updates include revisions to previously defined star alleles to align with PharmVar standards, as well as the addition of novel star alleles, providing the pharmacogenetic …

5-hydroxytryptamine type 3 (5-HT3) receptor antagonists are used to treat nausea and vomiting and in the prevention of chemotherapy-induced, radiation-induced, and postoperative nausea and vomiting. Most of the 5-HT3 receptor antagonists (i.e., ondansetron, tropisetron, dolasetron, palonosetron, and ramosetron) are metabolized by CYP2D6, but the extent of CYP2D6 involvement varies. CYP2D6 genetic variation can influence the metabolism of these medications, particularly ondansetron and tropisetron, thereby affecting drug efficacy. This guideline is an update to the 2016 Clinical Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium (CPIC) guideline for CYP2D6 genotype and use of ondansetron and tropisetron and includes updated information on CYP2D6 genetic …

Young adults with intellectual disability (ID) are an underserved population with a high prevalence of obesity, obesity-related health conditions, and reduced ability to complete instrumental and basic activities of daily living (I/ADLs). After leaving the structured environment of public school, many young adults with ID spend more time at home or in day programs, begin living more independently, or enter the workforce. These transitions may increase reliance on fast or processed foods and reduce opportunities for physical activity, contributing to accelerated weight gain. Previous research has demonstrated clinically meaningful short- and long-term weight loss (18-24 months) in adults with mild-to-moderate …

BACKGROUND: Calcineurin inhibitors (CNIs) revolutionized kidney transplantation by reducing acute rejection rates. Identical twin kidney transplantation is the only setting in which the allograft is immunologically indistinguishable from self, yet CNI use persists. We characterized CNI utilization across end-stage kidney disease etiologies and examined whether CNI exposure was associated with reduced rejection or improved death-censored graft survival (DCGS).
METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study using scientific registry of transplant recipients data (January 2000-August 2025). Among 255 adult identical twin kidney transplant recipients, discharge regimens were categorized by CNI use; Firth penalized Cox regression was the primary method for 10-year …

INTRODUCTION: We evaluated whether Trisomy 21 (T21) affected bowel management use, ability to toilet train for stool, and rates of Hirschsprung-Associated Enterocolitis (HAEC) in children with Hirschsprung disease (HD). We hypothesized that T21 would be associated with increased rates of HAEC, bowel management program (BMP) use, and delayed toilet training for stool.
METHODS: Children with HD in the Pediatric Colorectal and Pelvic Learning Consortium (PCPLC) database who underwent primary pull-through were included and stratified by T21 status: HD only versus HD + T21. Children requiring a redo pull-through, initially managed with a stoma, or those who had inadequate follow-up were …
“Dynt Of Dede:” Reading The Medieval Combat Scene Through The Helmet-Cleave Motif, Andrew Sherwood Thomas
“Dynt Of Dede:” Reading The Medieval Combat Scene Through The Helmet-Cleave Motif, Andrew Sherwood Thomas
Dissertations
This research explores the continuity of chivalric combat descriptions throughout medieval literature. By tracing the history, development, and distribution of the helmet-cleave motif, this study is able to examine combat scenes spanning a wide reach of time, genera, and language. The purpose of this work is to suggest a reading methodology for the chivalric combat scene that appropriately situates it in its cross-textual context and so reveals the nuance of its expression and the value in its study.
Despite the volume of surviving combat descriptions in medieval literature, they remain underrepresented in the scholarship due to their apparent repetitious and …

Llm-As-A-Judge For Software Engineering: Literature Review, Vision, And The Road Ahead, Junda He, Jieke Shi, Terry Yue Zhuo, Christoph Treude, Jiamou Sun, Zhenchang Xing, Xiaoning Du, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The rapid integration of Large Language Models (LLMs) into software engineering (SE) has revolutionized tasks from code generation to program repair, producing a massive volume of software artifacts. This surge in automated creation has exposed a critical bottleneck: the lack of scalable and reliable methods to evaluate the quality of these outputs. Human evaluation, while effective, is very costly and time-consuming. Traditional automated metrics like BLEU rely on high-quality references and struggle to capture nuanced aspects of software quality, such as readability and usefulness. In response, the LLM-as-a-Judge paradigm, which employs LLMs for automated evaluation, has emerged. This approach leverages …

B.R. Wells Arkansas Rice Research Studies 2025, J. Hardke, X. Sha, N. Bateman
Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series
Arkansas is the leading rice producer in the United States. The state represents 45.2% of total U.S. rice production and 45.7% of the total acres planted to rice in 2025. Rice cultural practices vary across the state and across the U.S. However, these practices are also dynamic and continue to evolve in response to changing political, environmental, and economic times. This survey was initiated in 2002 to monitor and record changes in the way Arkansas rice producers approach their livelihood. The survey was conducted by polling county extension agents in each of the counties in Arkansas that produce rice. Questions …
Expression Levels Of Heat Shock Protein 72 And Their Correlation With Biomarkers Of Renal Function Among Hispanic Construction Workers Exposed To Ambient Heat In El Paso, Texas, Maria Fuentes
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Heat shock proteins (HSP) are intracellular molecular proteins that are upregulated in response to cellular stress, including heat exposure. Through their protective functions, HSP help maintain protein structure, prevent protein denaturation, and preserve cellular homeostasis during states of physiological stress. Because of their cytoprotective properties, HSP have emerged as potential biomarkers for detecting early signs of tissue injury and predicting clinical outcomes associated with heat related illnesses (HRI), including acute kidney injuries (AKI). AKI is a leading cause of hospitalizations due to heat stress exposure and heat stroke. In the absence of early detection and effective therapeutic interventions, AKI may …

Bridging Borders: Community College Dual Credit Policy And Latinx Student Success In The Southwest Borderland, Daniel Guerra
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Early College High School (ECHS) programs have expanded access to college coursework and accelerated degree pathways; however, less is known about how Latinx students experience the transition from these programs into four-year institutions. This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of eight Latinx students who completed ECHS and matriculated to a four-year university between 2022 and 2024 in a Southwest borderland. The location is geographically isolated along the U.S.-Mexico border with a predominantly Hispanic population. Framed through Community Cultural Wealth and Rational Choice Theory, the study examined how students relied on cultural assets and evaluated educational opportunities while navigating secondary …
When Does Emigration Reduce Domestic Economic Activities? Evidence On The Loss Of Management Capacity From A Visa Lottery, Marup Hossain, Ahmed Mushfiq Mobarak
When Does Emigration Reduce Domestic Economic Activities? Evidence On The Loss Of Management Capacity From A Visa Lottery, Marup Hossain, Ahmed Mushfiq Mobarak
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Economic development is often conceived as structural transformation and migration out of rural agriculture (Lewis, 1954; Fei & Ranis, 1964). Understanding development therefore requires us to identify how rural economies transform in response to emigration. We study how international migration reshapes domestic economic activity in origin households using a randomized visa lottery that gave Bangladeshi men job opportunities in Malaysia. Winning the lottery raises total household income through remittances, but income earned in Bangladesh declines due to contractions in nonfarm business activity. In contrast, crop income remains stable despite large reductions in agricultural input expenditures, because farming gets delegated through …

Examining The Commonalities In Lived Experiences Of Performing Arts Students Who Have Faced Peer Victimization, Thomas Velisaris
University Honors Program Senior Projects
This study utilized a qualitative meta-analysis approach to determine commonalities in students who have experienced peer victimization due to their participation in a performing arts program. Accounts of peer victimization of performing arts students were gathered across multiple qualitative and mixed methods studies. These accounts were systematically analyzed, data were assigned codes, and sorted into metacategories. From those metacategories, common themes were created, including: 1) The performing arts are not cool, 2) The performing arts are for women, 3) The performing arts are gay, 4) Black artists receive backlash. The meta-analysis identified commonalities within these findings, including: peers attempting to …

Deemed Acceptance, Not Deemed Consent: Nonvoting Stakeholders And A Uniform Conspicuousness Standard For Opt-Out Third-Party Releases, Zach Cavagnaro
Student Scholarship
After Harrington v. Purdue Pharma, the fight over third-party opt-out releases has shifted from whether consent is necessary to what consent means. The Supreme Court held that the Bankruptcy Code does not authorize non-consensual nondebtor releases outside 11 U.S.C § 524(g), and—critically—left out what exactly counts as consent. The fight over consent is expected to command a lot of litigation, so a simple, uniform conspicuousness standard for nonvoting stakeholders’ opt-out releases can help alleviate litigation costs and focus on the definition of consent. This Comment argues that courts should evaluate consent through a unified, contract-law-grounded conspicuousness standard calibrated to the …

AWE (A Woman’s Experience)
It was an abrupt event, and it deserves an abrupt introduction: I was seventeen years old when I survived a lightning strike. We were on a church camping trip with a large group that included my dad and younger sister. The first night at camp, over fifty teenagers played lawn games on a grassy field after dinner. It was drizzling on and off that day, and we were excited to take advantage of the momentarily clear skies. At about 7:45 p.m., I was under a tree with my dad, trying to set up a croquet set for everyone to use. …

AWE (A Woman’s Experience)
A recent late-night walk to the library was joyfully interrupted by a young child. Her unique perspective framed by the diminished height and wholesome innocence of a seven-year-old, this child was eager to share what she, from her vantage point, saw, discovered, and valued. “Mom!” she yelled with brilliant curiosity, “Look at the lights!” Guided by her pointing hand, I too turned around. I saw my home city—where I wake and work and study every day—transformed, through the curiosity of a child, into a symbolic landscape of dappled lights and abstracted forms.

The Horror Of Female Autonomy: The Transformation Of Women In Vietnam War-Era Fiction And Film, Regan Roberts
AWE (A Woman’s Experience)
During the Vietnam War era, cultural fears intersected with evolving gender roles, particularly as women gained greater autonomy and visibility in public and private spheres. Fears such as these are realized and explored in the horror genre. Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried explores this societal tension in its short story, “Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong,” through Mary Anne Bell, a young girl whose transformation from innocent girlfriend to the monstrous Other subverts traditional femininity. I will explore this short story and its significance by contextualizing it alongside other media from the horror genre of the Vietnam War era, …

Listening, Stepping, Screaming: Feminist Interpretations Of Yoko Ono’S Art, Cordelia Lavender Mcphie
AWE (A Woman’s Experience)
Long before she spent her time promoting peace through music and her infamous bed-in honeymoon, Yoko Ono was breaking traditional conventions of art by creating and performing her pieces of instruction: art that requires a participating audience in order for it to be made. At the beginning of the 1960s, early in Ono’s art career and before her association with the Beatles, she was participating in new kinds of conceptual and communal art processes within (and without) the Fluxus art movement.1 She is not a solo artist in the traditional sense, because her artwork is unable to be fully realized …

A Self-Portrait: Staring The Male Gaze Right In The Eye, Brynne Petty
AWE (A Woman’s Experience)
The late nineteenth and early twentieth century was a time of constant change. Artists were constantly finding newer and more creative, often more bizarre, ways of expressing themselves through their art. Social norms were being broken down, with the subjects of many artworks becoming increasingly unconventional, bold, and, in many cases, provocative. Women swiftly became the subject of many paintings, often portrayed in the nude. Of course, a painting of a nude woman was not a new concept, but the way in which women were depicted was increasingly more sexual and erotic. Thus, the term male gaze—defined as “a …

Shake Hands: A Challenge And A Statement On The Woman’S Role In American Society, Brynne Petty
AWE (A Woman’s Experience)
Nineteenth-century America was a time ripe with change. New inventions were created every day; many felt the call of Manifest Destiny and pushed for Westward Expansion; and the country endured a brutal civil war, all while enduring the growing pains of a young nation. Every decade delivered more opportunities for artists to create paintings that told of epic battles and the courage of men as they faced the wild frontier. Yet, somewhere in the midst of all this, the American ideal shifted. Many artists turned their efforts toward creating genre paintings that depicted the everyday lives of the middle and …

Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: , To balance the interests of the power grid and the demand side, and achieve coordinated improvements in system economic efficiency, environmental friendliness, and renewable energy accommodation capacity, this paper proposes a bi-level coordinated scheduling model based on the Stackelberg game and the GMO. A leader-follower game model incorporating carbon emission constraints and multi-scenario stochastic constraints for photovoltaic generation is constructed, with the grid operator as the leader and EVs/V2G and energy storage as the followers, resolving the core contradiction between global optimization and individual rationality. The spatio-temporal stochastic characteristics of EV travel, the cycle life of energy storage …

Numerical Simulation Of Water Tank Solidification In A Firefighting Aircraft Under High-Altitude Cold-Soak Conditions, Guanmian Liu, Zhihang Cheng, Hejun Qin, Kangzhi Yang, Qing Wen, Kun Gao
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: A systematic numerical simulation study was conducted to address the issue of internal water tank solidification in firefighting aircraft under high-altitude low-temperature conditions. Based on computational fluid dynamics methods, a solidification-melting model considering fluid-structure interaction heat transfer and phase change processes was adopted. Through reasonable simplification of the complex geometric model, a quasi-three-dimensional computational model suitable for engineering analysis was developed. The influence laws of key parameters, including high-altitude cold-soak temperature, ground initial water temperature, and cold-soak time, on the freezing characteristics of the water tank were investigated. Combining with the parameter influence laws, a safety criterion using the …

Not A Pretty Picture: Race, Gender, And Inequality In The Legal Profession And Legal Education, Tanina Rostain
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Responding to renewed interest in law school as a path to a career “to do well and do good,” this essay examines Nelson, Dinovitzer, Garth, Sterling, Wilkins, Dawe, and Michelson’s The Making of Lawyers’ Careers and its account of inequality and opportunity in the American legal profession. The Evolution Of Hymenopteran Recombination Rates, Timothy John Delory
The Evolution Of Hymenopteran Recombination Rates, Timothy John Delory
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Individuals of some species mix their DNA frequently when producing sex cells, while others do so much less. Hymenopterans (ants bees and wasps) are especially useful for understanding this variation for several reasons. They show large differences in this frequency of shuffling, or rate of recombination, have well-studied genomes, and vary widely in how they live and reproduce. I capitalized on these features examines how recombination rates have evolved in this group at the trait, and gene level.
First, I revisited long-standing ideas about why recombination rates differ among these species, incorporating more than a decade of new research. This …
