Stopping The Flood Of Denglish: The Difficult Dilemma Faced By German Language Organizations In Modern-Day Germany, Julianne Kay Lofton
Stopping The Flood Of Denglish: The Difficult Dilemma Faced By German Language Organizations In Modern-Day Germany, Julianne Kay Lofton
Honors Theses
In this study I examined the reactions of official and independent German language organizations to the influx of Denglish, which is a hybrid mix of German and English, and Anglicisms. The independent language organizations tend to be more open in opposing these linguistic influences, and often want strict language protection laws like those in France and Poland. I hypothesized that Germany’s Nazi past has led to a general lack of patriotism and nationalism in Germany, which has affected their language policy and allowed Germany to be overrun by Denglish and Anglicized words and phrases. Germany is experiencing a renewal of …
Soviet Language Policy In Uzbekistan: How The Role Of Russian Has Changed Through Soviet Times And Independence, Mary Catherine Boehmer
Soviet Language Policy In Uzbekistan: How The Role Of Russian Has Changed Through Soviet Times And Independence, Mary Catherine Boehmer
Honors Theses
This thesis examines the progression of Soviet language policy in Uzbekistan and its effects. It also examines how the perception of Russian has changed in post-Soviet Uzbekistan and Uzbeks now view their own language as a direct result of language policy. I based my research on the research of others and the interview of a former Peace Corps volunteer who lived in both Tashkent and Andijon for a total period of two years. Through my investigation, I discovered how the Central Asian languages were formed on the basis of language, how Soviet leaders used both Russian and ethnic languages to …
Motivating Genocide: Indirect Colonial Rule As A Motivator Of Genocidal Ideology And Policy, Trevor Bruce Rockstad
Motivating Genocide: Indirect Colonial Rule As A Motivator Of Genocidal Ideology And Policy, Trevor Bruce Rockstad
Honors Theses
In this study I have explored indirect colonial rule as a motivation of genocide. I use case studies of the 1994 Rwandan and 1975 Cambodian genocides to illustrate the way that indirect colonially rule divided societies, creating colonially relegated and colonially elevated sections of society. Genocide becomes a more likely possibility if the colonially relegated group gains power after decolonization. If this group does gain power, it will pursue a policy of retribution for oppression suffered during the colonially period, repression of the colonially elevated group, and minimization of the return to the colonially order in which they were the …
Articulating Silence In The Postcolonial Indian Novel, Kaelin O'Connell
Articulating Silence In The Postcolonial Indian Novel, Kaelin O'Connell
Honors Theses
Whatever is worth seeing or hearing in India can be expressed in writing. As soon as everything of importance is expressed in writing, a man who is duly qualified may obtain more knowledge of India in one year, in his closet in England, than he could obtain during the course of the longest life, by the use of his eyes and ears in India.
-James Mill, The History of British India, 1817.
This quotation, from the first philosophical history of India, posits the common British colonial notion that language, specifically the written word, might capture all that is "worth …

Position Tracking And Motion Prediction Using Fuzzy Logic, Patrick Rodjito
Position Tracking And Motion Prediction Using Fuzzy Logic, Patrick Rodjito
Honors Theses
Unlike with traditional, computationally expensive algorithms, with Fuzzy Logic (FL) one does not have to own a fast computer or very precise measuring instruments to get good results. At lower costs, FL provides a simple way to arrive at a definite conclusion based upon vague, ambiguous, imprecise, noisy, or missing input information. This is a facet of AI that appears to resemble human intuition in an important way: the ability to make quick and urgent judgment calls, on the spot, without the need to be absolutely certain of the input. The benefit brought by a low-cost solution like FL to …
Non-Adherence: A Symptom Of The Current Health Care Model, Margaret Duggan
Non-Adherence: A Symptom Of The Current Health Care Model, Margaret Duggan
Honors Theses
This paper aims to provide a systematic review of the discourse surrounding patient adherence in an effort to illustrate the extent of the problem, how it is framed, and how intervention is currently approached. The paper begins with a general review of adherence, to ground the reader in the current discourse. The next section of the paper will focus specifically on adherence through the lens of HIV/AIDS. Since HIV/AIDS treatment and adherence to antiretroviral drugs is pertinent to adherence issues due to the complexity and lifelong duration of treatment. Furthermore, adherence with HIV/AIDS medications is particularly important due to the …
Playing The Game Our Own Way: A Social Perspective On Jazz And Blues In Southern Literature, Landon Christian Pollard
Playing The Game Our Own Way: A Social Perspective On Jazz And Blues In Southern Literature, Landon Christian Pollard
Honors Theses
This project is an attempt to examine the social realm of jazz and blues music within Southern literature. Specifically, this thesis analyzes works of fiction, combined with knowledge of scholarly articles and essays, to draw conclusions and parallels between jazz and blues music and the selected works within Southern literature. The first chapter focuses primarily on the social role of the jazz and blues musicians, defining and exploring the way in which these musicians move within social space. The second chapter focuses on Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man, using the aspiring jazz musician as a model for the novel and journey …
Etruscan Fiesole, Kathryn Virginia Cannada
Etruscan Fiesole, Kathryn Virginia Cannada
Honors Theses
This paper is an examination of the Etruscan people and their inhabitation of the of Fiesole, outside of Florence, Italy. After living in Florence, Italy during 2004 and 2005,1 became interested in the beginnings of the area. Learning that Fiesole was conversations town populated earlier than Florence, I began researching about Fiesole. From with local archaeologists and from examining the visible, ancient remnants of Fiesole in the Archaeology Museum of Fiesole and in the town itself, my interest and knowledge about this interesting area grew. When 1 began to read about Fiesole, 1 discovered that little material has been written …
Fragmentation Within The Modern Basque Nationalist Movement And Its Implications For Basque Cultural Identity, Kathryn Zoe Merrell
Fragmentation Within The Modern Basque Nationalist Movement And Its Implications For Basque Cultural Identity, Kathryn Zoe Merrell
Honors Theses
This thesis explores the Basque Nationalist Movement from its inception to modem times. Through the exploration of empirical data, this thesis will show how the processes of industrialization, urbanization, immigration, globalization, and the dissemination of information through the mass media affect the Nationalist ideology in the Basque region. In the conclusion, it becomes apparent that the Nationalist ideology becomes increasingly water downed as Nationalist leaders attempt to make their brand of Nationalism more appealing to the Spanish government and the European Union. By doing this, the Basque Nationalist Movement reflects the changing cultural identity of the Basque region and shows …
Ecocritism And The Renaissance: A Study In Shakespeare And More, Melissa Levert Smith
Ecocritism And The Renaissance: A Study In Shakespeare And More, Melissa Levert Smith
Honors Theses
This study draws on ideas from the emerging field of literary criticism known as ecocriticism and extends its basic assumptions back to the Renaissance works of Thomas More and William Shakespeare. The research therefore includes primary Renaissance texts, current ecocritical works, and selections from the twentieth-century criticism from which ecocriticism developed. I investigate in detail More’s Utopia and Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and King Lear. The study takes into account the disparity between Renaissance attitudes towards the environment and current concerns about pollution and scarcity of resources, but I suggest that the questions asked by ecocritical scholars today, when …

Cotton And Compromise: Charles Pinckney And The Political Unification Of South Carolina 1788-1808, Hunter Glenn Upchurch
Honors Theses
This project surveys the life and times of South Carolinian Charles Pinckney after he participated in the Constitutional Convention of 1787. My objective was to discern how Pinckney’s political career both mirrored and contributed to South Carolina’s gradual shift away from Federalism towards Jeffersonian-Republicanism, as the western “Up-Country” region slowly took power from the more traditional, coastal “Low- Country.” To achieve this goal, I examined hundreds of pages of primary sources, including Pinckney’s extant speeches, his published articles or pamphlets, and many of his personal letters. To augment my factual and historiographical knowledge of the early national period of United …
Teaching Pronunciation In High School Spanish Classes: A Focus On Vowels, Ellen Waisanen
Teaching Pronunciation In High School Spanish Classes: A Focus On Vowels, Ellen Waisanen
Honors Theses
With the growing use of Spanish in the United States, it is increasingly valuable to have a knowledge of the language. Accurate pronunciation is an integral component of effectively speaking Spanish and attaining native-like mastery of the language, yet it is neglected by many high school teachers. For this reason, I chose to use my honors thesis project to emphasize accurate pronunciation and create a resource for teaching it more thoroughly. With this collection of notes and exercises, I hope to provide a foundation for high school Spanish teachers to highlight pronunciation in their classes. More specifically, I have focused …
The True Patron Of Ireland : Saint Brigit And The Rise Of Celtic Christianity, Autumn Dolan
The True Patron Of Ireland : Saint Brigit And The Rise Of Celtic Christianity, Autumn Dolan
Honors Theses
When Saint Patrick landed in Ireland in 432 AD, history says that he brought Christianity to the Irish. In actuality, though, Patrick's arrival was the beginning of a religious struggle between Rome and Ireland. Patrick's Church was based on Roman traditions and his mission in Ireland was not just to defeat paganism, but to intercede in the foundations of an already developing Celtic Church. To challenge Patrick and his Roman ways, Ireland exalted a saint of its own. Saint Brigit ( 452-525 AD) and the characteristics she represented in Irish hagiography clearly illustrated the ideal Irish saint. Ireland's reverence for …
Treasuring Identity : Subject-Object Relations In Beowulf, Becky Workman
Treasuring Identity : Subject-Object Relations In Beowulf, Becky Workman
Honors Theses
Beowulfs introspection leads him to seek glory and wealth to preserve his memory after death. Unlike the battles against Grendel and Grendel's mother, Beowulfs actions against the dragon clearly prioritize the winning of treasure over the safety of the people. Beowulf seems to believe that revenge upon the dragon is a justification for risking not only his life, but the stability of the leadership of his nation. The hoard that he wins illustrates how material objects are not necessarily longer lasting or more stable than mortals. Treasure's intimate connection with the human body in the social structure of the community …
A Comparison In Osteological Measurements Of Two Populations From East Tennessee, Corrine Vitek
A Comparison In Osteological Measurements Of Two Populations From East Tennessee, Corrine Vitek
Honors Theses
Forensic anthropology is the identification of skeletal remams in medicolegal death investigations. The foundation of forensic anthropology rests on "documented" skeletal collections, which provide a crucial repository of information from which experts can rely upon to make determinations about human skeletal remains. A "documented" skeletal collection is one in which the demographics (e.g., ancestry, sex, age, height) of each individual are supported by known facts about the decedent at the time of his/her death. A quantitative comparison between the Hamilton County Forensic Center's(HCFC) skeletal collection to the William M. Bass collection housed at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville (UTK) …
An Analysis Of Service-Learning And Applied Anthropology, Danielle Nordbrock
An Analysis Of Service-Learning And Applied Anthropology, Danielle Nordbrock
Honors Theses
People think of others in comparison to themselves, and what they know. Anthropologists study a wide variety of things, this includes all different societies: simple and complex, ancient and modern, and in different locales. The perspective of an anthropologist tends to take on a unique cross-cultural nature, with comparisons oftentimes being central to the research. When anthropologists become engaged in a project and begin their fieldwork they experience a unique sense of understanding from living in such close proximity to another culture.
Religion And Support Of Democracy: Protestantism, Catholicism, And The Support For Democracy In Mexico, Sara Jolly
Religion And Support Of Democracy: Protestantism, Catholicism, And The Support For Democracy In Mexico, Sara Jolly
Honors Theses
The findings are consistent with other recent studies in Latin America. Eric Patterson found a similar pattern in Argentina and Chile in his study in 2003 (Patterson 2003). The data shows that despite Mexico’s history ofstrained Church/ State relations and a 70-year authoritarian rule, the Protestants in Mexico tend to hold similar beliefs on the support for democracy as the Protestants of other Latin American countries.

A Curriculum Plan Based On A Sung Dynasty Landscape Artist's Work And Techniques, Lindsey R. Terbrack
Honors Theses
This paper explores Sung Dynasty landscape paintings with focused attention on the works of Yen Wen-kuei. Comparison to Western art is apparent throughout the paper as an aide in using this information to create a unit of study suitable for high school art. The paper focuses around the context of the time period, materials used, style, presentation, viewer involvement, technique and thought process. The exemplar of Yen Wen-kuei is then dissected to give tangible evidence to the study.
Approaches And Methods In Language Teaching: An Investigative Look At A Total Physical Response In Chattanooga Area Classrooms, Alicia R. Hannah
Approaches And Methods In Language Teaching: An Investigative Look At A Total Physical Response In Chattanooga Area Classrooms, Alicia R. Hannah
Honors Theses
I was sitting on a leather couch at a local hangout trying to cram for a test in my Advanced Spanish Grammar class. In front of me, I had my textbook open to a picture of a crowded South American intersection and I was frantically trying to memorize a list of more than 100 Spanish vocabulary words related to automobiles. I had been studying Spanish since the eighth grade and was just amazed that 10 years later I was still having trouble internalizing certain words. I was talking aloud to myself, trying to remember the verb "to start the car." …
Power, Positionality, And Conceptions Of Stewardship And Ownership In The Cleanup Of Nomans Land Island, Massachusetts, Michael Greenberg
Power, Positionality, And Conceptions Of Stewardship And Ownership In The Cleanup Of Nomans Land Island, Massachusetts, Michael Greenberg
Honors Theses
One of the most pressing issues facing Indigenous groups today, especially in the intimate New Engl'and communilties of the northeastern United States, is their ongoing struggle to reclaim and preserve sovereignty on land they once cultivated as stewards but now live on under the encroachment of larger States. In recent years, the United States government has sought to deal with issues of Native American sovereignty through granting federal recognition to tribes, thus creating a relationship of "nation-to-nation status" between a tribal government and the national government. This relationship generates a complex power structure on global, national, regional, and tribal levels, …

Illuminating A Space For Women And Rhetoric, Lindsey M. Fox
Illuminating A Space For Women And Rhetoric, Lindsey M. Fox
Honors Theses
My overarching concerns are for the place and power of women in rhetoric and democracy. This concern developed during my study of classical rhetoric, when I noticed an obvious absence of women in rhetoric. For example, John Poulakos and Takis Poulakos state that any "ordinary person" could play a role on the political stage in Athens (34). This reference to "ordinary people" is proof that women were made invisible because, as George A. Kennedy explains, in classical Athens, democracy was only for "an assembly of all adult male citizens" (16). Male citizens, then, were actually rather extra-ordinary. Because democracy …
Only In Story A World : Atheistic Metanarrative In Leguin, Pullman And Wolfe, Samuel N. Keyes
Only In Story A World : Atheistic Metanarrative In Leguin, Pullman And Wolfe, Samuel N. Keyes
Honors Theses
Ursula K. Le Guin, Philip Pullman, and Gene Wolfe, despite their apparent ideological as well as stylistic differences, all profoundly question the way modernity has divided knowledge, posing serious challenges to contemporary distinctions between religion, science and magic. Moreover, they share a common concern for the power of narrative to accomplish this critique.
In each of their multivolume fantasies, the differences between the categories of science and religion become meaningless. After such a deconstruction, the possibility of nihilism looms unless a new system of meaning surfaces. The move away from discrete areas of science and religion, therefore, in these works …
Surveillance Of The Balto-Finnic Speakers: A Geolinguistic Inquiry, Lindsay E. Gwyther
Surveillance Of The Balto-Finnic Speakers: A Geolinguistic Inquiry, Lindsay E. Gwyther
Honors Theses
The Balto-Finnic languages of northeast Europe are part of the larger Uralic language family. Today, there are seven Balto-Finnic speaking nations, two of which govern their own independent sovereignties (Finland and Estonia). The other five nations lie precariously within the territorial borders of Russia and Latvia for the most part. This paper examines the geographic expanse and status of these languages over time and through space and develops a series of maps to better illustrate these patterns. Historical research demonstrates that their distribution has decreased in area, but strengthened and centralized in certain regions, enabling their presence in a predominantly …
Creating A Video Device Application, Kevin Septor
Creating A Video Device Application, Kevin Septor
Honors Theses
A video device, such as a webcam, has the capability to be used in many ways, including recording video and behaving like a security camera. A TV tuner card can also record video, and in addition be used for watching television. However, the video hardware and device driver the operating system uses to access it are only capable of delivering raw frames of video. A user space application is necessary for exploiting the capabilities of such a device beyond reading sequential frames of video. This research explores the desiderata in a powerful video device application, and introduces a program that …
Building Morocco Through Literacy: Women's Participation In Development, Elizabeth L. Holmes
Building Morocco Through Literacy: Women's Participation In Development, Elizabeth L. Holmes
Honors Theses
This thesis examines what factors are important for successful literacy provision in the case of urban Moroccan women. Literacy programs should teach participants not only to decipher symbols on paper, but should provide information relevant to the everyday context of learners' lives. As a result, newly literate individuals should perceive changes in their levels of self-esteem, empowerment, economic status, and health conditions. In Morocco, the government launched a large-scale literacy campaign in May 2003 to lower illiteracy, which currently affects about half of the population. In conjunction with this campaign, the Moroccan government is increasingly cooperating with NGOs, the principal …
The Emergence Of A Middle Class Among Turks In Germany: A Move Toward Cultural Pluralism, Eden Blythe Hegwood
The Emergence Of A Middle Class Among Turks In Germany: A Move Toward Cultural Pluralism, Eden Blythe Hegwood
Honors Theses
This thesis examines the recent development of a middle class among the current Turkish community in Gemiany. By following the generations of individuals of Turkish descent from the original guest-workers arriving in Germany in the early 1960s on to the third and fourth generations of German Turks, the process of middle class establishment over time becomes apparent. Paralleling the emergence of Turkish middle class, increased acculturation or cultural assimilation has occurred, which is also described herein in terms of generational accomplishment. Finally, this work seeks to determine the relationship between middle class status and integration among this migrant group in …
European Lingua Franca? Germany's Relationship With English In The Late Twentieth Century, Anna Elise Fleming
European Lingua Franca? Germany's Relationship With English In The Late Twentieth Century, Anna Elise Fleming
Honors Theses
The following thesis analyses the maintenance of national education, business, and social infrastructures (such as popular media and advertisement) for the English language within German borders. This linguistic situation in Germany, combined with the pressure of English as a global language, signifies the possibility of English becoming the lingua franca (common language) for Europe (both European Union and non-European Union countries), especially in the areas of higher education, business, and media.

An Interdisciplinary Approach to Teaching Contemporary U.S.History: Music as a Voice for Civil Rights Protest,1950-Present. This departmental honors project was created to take an in-depth look into popular music's voice as a medium for Civil Rights protest. This unit composed of eight lesson plans is to serve as a resource for teachers to create a real and tangible interdisciplinary approach to teaching contemporary U. S. history. The material covered is derived from popular music of its time, yet based strongly on research ofactual events. These lessons cover a narrow yet vital and significant scope of civil rights protest, action, and …
