An In-Depth Comparison Of Three Fast Food Industry Giants: How Chick-Fil-A Differs From Mcdonald's And Wendy's In The Growth From Humble Beginnings To Become Multi-Billion Dollar Companies, Jonathan Cardwell
Honors Theses
From humble beginnings to industry giants, three companies have combined for over 163 years of implementing innovative business models and growing sales across the globe. Chick-fil-A, McDonald's, and Wendy's have accounted for tens of billions of dollars in sales revenue since their respective inceptions. Chick-fil-A is a family-owned company started and run by S. Truett Cathy and his children. McDonald's is an industry juggernaut created by Ray Kroc, and Dave Thomas founded Wendy's. Over the years, Chick-fil-A has prioritized its growth by maintaining their high quality standards in exchange for a slower growth rate. McDonald's has grown rapidly to an …

Roles Of Speech-Language Pathologists In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Katy Lane Greenlee
Honors Theses
This thesis examined the roles of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). In 2004, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association published a set of policy documents regarding speech-language pathology practice in the NICU. Research compiled in the literature review explained and supported each of the roles listed in the ASHA policy documents. The literature also revealed that very few sources specific to the speech-language pathology field addressed roles other than those related to feeding and swallowing evaluation and intervention. This research investigated ASHA-certified, masters-level SLPs' familiarity with each of their possible roles in the NICU, as well as …

The Effect Of Whole Body Low Frequency Vibration On Absolute And Relative Peak-Z Forces In Vertical Jump Performance, Morgan Shields Hilton
Honors Theses
Coaches, trainers, and performers depend on sports conditioning to take an athletes performance to the next level. Because the mechanisms used during conditioning are so important for sports, research has been collected over many years to determine the on best way to efficiently progress towards a better performance. A recently studied performance enhancing technique is whole body low frequency vibration (WBLFV). The purpose of this study was to show whether whole body vibration enhanced athletic performance with an increase in the absolute and relative peak-z forces and to determine an optimal rest interval between vibration and performance. Sixteen healthy female …
Geostatistical Analysis Of Arsenic In Soils At The University Of Mississippi Field Station., Elsie Ekene Okoye
Geostatistical Analysis Of Arsenic In Soils At The University Of Mississippi Field Station., Elsie Ekene Okoye
Honors Theses
Arsenic is pervasive throughout North Mississippi’s soils (Pettry and Switzer, 2001; Fordham and Norrish, 1983 and; Kaiser and Guggenberger, 2003). This is largely due to the use of pesticides and herbicides in past and present years, as arsenic is a fundamental component in chemicals used for agricultural purposes. Soils contaminated with arsenic present a serious hazard to human health due to the possibility of contaminating surface and groundwater, as well as food through plant uptake of arsenic. Consequently, it is important to understand the process and effects of arsenic absorption in soil. The focus of this research is on the …

Mixed Record: Water Privatization In Latin America, Brianna Nicole Van Stekelenburg
Honors Theses
This thesis examines to what extent the Latin American experience suggests privatization is a promising path to deliver a reliable and affordable water supply. In order to address this question, the thesis studies whether water privatization has worked in Latin America by examining three case studies. The countries that are used for the case studies are Bolivia, Chile and Peru. The thesis is made up of five chapters. The first chapter contains general information on water as a human right and an economic good. Each case study is comprised of a chapter and focuses on five main dimensions that serve …

An Assessment Of Primary Care Physician Shortages In Mississippi, Megumi Diane Mathis
Honors Theses
According to the Department of Health and Human Services, there are Health Professional Shortage Areas in all states and territories of the United States.' Since fewer students graduating from medical school are choosing primary care," it is imperative that future graduates in the field know which regions are in greatest need of primary care physicians. In a joint effort with the Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship Program and the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College, this thesis used data obtained from the Mississippi Department of Health, the United States Census Bureau, the Mississippi State Medical Association, and the Mississippi State Board of …
Resolving The Structural Paradox Of Retail Transnational Corporations: A Case Study Of Walmart In Latin America, Arlissa Nicole Whisenant
Resolving The Structural Paradox Of Retail Transnational Corporations: A Case Study Of Walmart In Latin America, Arlissa Nicole Whisenant
Honors Theses
This research focuses on the structural paradox of retail transnational corporations through a case study of Walmart in Latin America. The structural paradox is defined as the struggle to find a successful balance between localization and standardization efforts. Through the analysis of the failures and successes of Walmart in Latin America and supplemental examples of Walmart in other markets, I argue that intense localization efforts in areas with direct customer contact (front-end operations), as well as in areas without direct customer contact, like management and planning (back-end operations), are necessary in order to be successful in international markets.
Welcome To The "Backstage" Of Musical Theatre, Emily Erin Wicks
Welcome To The "Backstage" Of Musical Theatre, Emily Erin Wicks
Honors Theses
Unlike most fields, performing is an occupation that does not require formal education. However, most performers need training to perfect their craft in order to be successful. Higher education is one training outlet that is used by some performers, but not many. In a performance degree program at an institution of higher education. performers are not just trained in the art, but they are also taught about the business of the theatre industry. Although, often, what is taught is not enough knowledge for performers to truly succeed and make theatre a lifetime career. This thesis is directed towards an audience …
Recycling Behavior In Germany In The Early 1990s: Person-Level And Contextual Determinants Of Recycling, Jacqueline Grace Boyce
Recycling Behavior In Germany In The Early 1990s: Person-Level And Contextual Determinants Of Recycling, Jacqueline Grace Boyce
Honors Theses
Although there is an abundance of information about recycling determinants and the effects of German reunification, this thesis combines these two areas to fill in a gap that has not previously been researched. This research aims to investigate factors that make a person more likely to recycle, particularly a German in the early 1990s, while especially targeting the difference between eastern and western Germans. This project involves background research, statistical analysis and interviews and reaches two conclusions. Firstly, recycling behavior is difficult to explain in Germany at this time because of the high rates of recycling in place. Secondly, recycling …
Shifting Local Ecologies: Biocultural Interactions And Ecuadorian Public Health, Sabrina Bradford
Shifting Local Ecologies: Biocultural Interactions And Ecuadorian Public Health, Sabrina Bradford
Honors Theses
Though biology is considered universal, this thesis argues against the assumption of the universal applications of biomedicine in favor of a biocultural approach, emphasizing shifting local ecologies in an increasingly globalized world. This research investigated Ecuadorian health within an ecological context in coordination with an international public health internship that was completed through the Universidad San Francisco de Quito and the Ecuadorian Ministerio de Salud Pública. Throughout this thesis, examples are provided demonstrating that globalization, though appearing as a homogenous process on the international level, creates heterogeneous effects on the local scale. To explain the mechanisms and implications of these …
Human Rights In Transit: Nationality, Anti-Haitianism, And The Reactionary State In The Dominican Republic, Ryan Keith Ezelle
Human Rights In Transit: Nationality, Anti-Haitianism, And The Reactionary State In The Dominican Republic, Ryan Keith Ezelle
Honors Theses
The Dominican Republic and Haiti share a long and troubled history in which race, ethnicity, and culture have been the primary factors in each country’s contrasting national narrative and identity. For many decades Haitians living in the Dominican Republic and their descendants have suffered from lack of recognition from the Dominican government, but since the 1990s this ensuing condition of statelessness has become more widespread and has been greatly aggravated by several actions taken by the Dominican State. In the first decade of the 2000s, the State introduced new laws and policies, including the Law 285 on Immigration, the civil …
Congress And Its Other Budget Problem: An Examination Of The Effect Of Campaign Contributions On Congress' Decision-Making, Joe Hollis Higdon
Congress And Its Other Budget Problem: An Examination Of The Effect Of Campaign Contributions On Congress' Decision-Making, Joe Hollis Higdon
Honors Theses
While there is significant study concerning the source of money in Congressional campaigns, comparatively little is geared towards demonstrating the link between Congress’s decision-making and the interests of the donors. By examining individual statements made during the Congressional “Supercommittee” meetings and the overall voting behavior of the Congress during specific debates, this paper finds that the link between donors’ interests and members’ votes are varyingly correlated due to other factors, but in general the link is more tenuous than is popularly believed.

The Great Depression In Wilkinson County Mississippi: A Collection Of Oral Histories, Ashley Ann Johnson
Honors Theses
This research studied the time period of the Great Depression in the lives of seven individuals who lived in Wilkinson County, Mississippi. The individuals answered a series of questions, all the same, in an attempt to distinguish the differences and similarities in their lives during the Great Depression. The research focuses on the belief that many of the individuals went through the same experiences. The research discovered that even though the Great Depression caused much suffering across the nation, the rural people of Wilkinson County already suffered from bad times and the Great Depression did not alter their lifestyles negatively, …
Attitudes Towards Homosexuality In China, Mallory Elaine Lee
Attitudes Towards Homosexuality In China, Mallory Elaine Lee
Honors Theses
Since Mao Zedong’s rise to power in China, homosexuality is has been a relatively under-studied topic. In order to identify factors that influence both self-identification of homosexuality and attitudes towards homosexuality, both qualitative and quantitative analysis was utilized. While the data analysis found that the variables were not significant in relation to one another, it is obvious that various factors may influence both a person’s willingness to come out as homosexual and the attitudes of Chinese people towards homosexual. While these conclusions are not definitive, this thesis opens the door for further research into attitudes towards homosexuality and self-identification of …

The World Of Shadow Banking: An Examination Of Non-Bank Financial Intermediaries And Their Contribution To The 2008 Financial Crisis, Colin Peter Applewhite
Honors Theses
Since its rise in the second half of the twentieth century, shadow banking has grown to overtake commercial banking in the financial sector. The health of the economy now relies heavily on the sustainability of shadow banks, as seen with the financial crisis of 2008. This thesis will examine exactly how shadow banking became such a vital component to the economy. It will look at the history of the financial system that was conducive to the growth of shadow banking, with an emphasis on the Banking Act of 1933. Further, it will discuss key financial instruments that are the backbone …

Tax Credits In The Film Industry: Friend Or Foe? An Analysis Of The Cost-Benefit Relationship Between Tax Incentives And The States That Provide Them, Virginia Anne Gamble
Honors Theses
Today, tax incentives play a major role in the film industry. The primary research question of the thesis is the cost-benefit relationship between these incentives and the states that provide them. A further research question is how states can remain competitive amongst one another while maintaining this cost-benefit relationship. A review of scholarly articles, from economists and film office officials, reveals arguments for and against the incentive programs. Researching the history of these tax incentives in the United States also provides a basis for an opinion on the potential future incentives may have in the film industry. Many economists believe …
The Marketing And Branding Of The Church In America, Joshua David Gregory
The Marketing And Branding Of The Church In America, Joshua David Gregory
Honors Theses
The objective of my thesis is to examine the church and its efforts to market to the consumer-centric society that is America. In the United States, churches have evolved and changed in many ways since our ancestors came to America. In what we call the “Bible Belt,” the area from Texas to Florida, there is a church on nearly every comer. The question becomes “Is variation a necessity?” One might say that all religions offer the same transaction in that they exchange the meaning of life for some investment by the believer (Twitchell, 2004). My intention is to focus specifically …

Perceptions Of Mississippi As A Tourist Destination, Kathleen Diane Kaiser
Honors Theses
Mississippi offers an array of tourism, but what do people who visit the state consider Mississippi has the best of? What are Mississippi’s less known tourism offerings? This study hints that those who are experienced with Mississippi more positively perceive the state as a tourist destination, whereas those who are not familiar with Mississippi’s offerings do not see the state as positively. A Qualtrics survey was conducted for students attending the University of Mississippi in the Lafayette/Oxford asking demographic questions and a survey that measured 16 tourism criteria on a 5 point Likert scale. SPSS 17.0 Independent sample t-tests were …

The Memphis Cotton Carnival began in 1931 as a way to use the main product of Memphis—cotton—to bring the city out of the Great Depression. Through various incarnations, Carnival has endured and today stands as one of the longest-standing traditions in the city. Its founders envisioned a meeting of the minds of the city's industry leaders accompanied by a series of events as a celebration for Memphis residents, as well as a way to increase tourism in the city. Cotton Carnival and Cotton Maker's jubilee, a celebration started in 1935 for the African American community in Memphis, have changed and …
An Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Incorporating Virtual Cadaver Study On Student Performance In Human Anatomy And Physiology, Mary Katherine Kerce
An Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Incorporating Virtual Cadaver Study On Student Performance In Human Anatomy And Physiology, Mary Katherine Kerce
Honors Theses
In an ideal Human Anatomy & Physiology (Human A&P) laboratory, students would use human cadavers for study. However, due to the limited supply of human cadavers and high cost of constructing and maintaining laboratory facilities, many institutions choose to use various animal organs and models to teach human anatomy. Dissections are an irreplaceable tool to help students understand human anatomy because models often have garish colors that allow easy discrimination of structures but do not show the colors and textures associated with real tissue. Additionally, cadavers, organs. and models must remain within the laboratory, so students have limited access. The …

Farmers Markets And Food Security: A Critical Evaluation Of The Sociodemographic Factors Influencing Market Patronage In The Mississippi Delta, Mary Margaret Saulters
Honors Theses
Characterized by extreme poverty, limited access to fresh foods, and a high prevalence of nutrition-related disease, the rural Mississippi Delta represents an understudied and highly at-risk population in terms of food security. This paper explores the role of alternative foodways in the Delta, specifically examining the potential for farmers markets to improve community food security in rural, low- income areas. This study uses a mixed-methods approach to measure farmers market patronage among different racial and socioeconomic groups in the Mississippi Delta. The findings of this study indicate that while sociodemographic factors, such as race, income, and education are associated with …

France's Soul-Searching: Finding National Identity In Political Metaphors During The 2012 Presidential Election, Cody Leblanc
France's Soul-Searching: Finding National Identity In Political Metaphors During The 2012 Presidential Election, Cody Leblanc
Honors Theses
This thesis examines the ways in which French national identity was constructed metaphorically during the 2012 presidential election. Due to the increased controversy surrounding the overt utilization of the term national identity following the 2007-2012 Sarkozy administration, candidates in the 2012 presidential election used metaphor as a means by which to define their own competing conceptions of French national identity. The goal of this study is to examine the phenomenon of national identity creation by addressing the following question: How does each principal candidate (François Hollande, Nicolas Sarkozy) in the French presidential election of 2012 use metaphor in order to …

This thesis traces the development of science during the Enlightenment and seeks to prove that Enlightenment science set the stage for the science …
Shame On You: How Media Affects The Formation Of Negative Body Image In Adolescent Women, Brittany Lee Cosenza
Shame On You: How Media Affects The Formation Of Negative Body Image In Adolescent Women, Brittany Lee Cosenza
Honors Theses
The culturally accepted body ideal is grov^dng increasingly thinner. Youns women seem to be particularly susceptible to an internalization of this ideal throuah media exposure. This susceptibility led me to explore the relationship between media exposure and negative body image. After examining a plethora of literature on the subject, I discovered that body dissatisfaction seems to have become the societal norm for adolescent girls. Images of women in the media have become a source of comparison that often results in a discrepancy betv^^een actual physical body t>T?e and the idealized body type. Objectification theory^ explains how media may lead …
