The Star Chamber In Its Last Years, Christine Martine Jan 1985

The Star Chamber In Its Last Years, Christine Martine

Honors Theses

In the course of English history many legal courts have been established and abolished. There were two types of legal courts: common law and prerogative. Commonlaw courts had their basis in fmndamental laws and custom while pre- rogative courts were established by the king's prerogative for different reasons. Most of the prerogative courts were developed during the medieval or early modern period and were abolished during the Stuart reign. One such prerogative court was the Court of the Star Chamber. It can trace its beginnings to the medieval period and was abolished during the reign of Charles I. The Court …

Exegesis Of The Book Of Malachi, Malcolm M. Hutton Apr 1984

Exegesis Of The Book Of Malachi, Malcolm M. Hutton

Honors Theses

The work of an exegete is invaluable if one is to uncover the intended meaning of any passage. Contrary to what many religionists so demonstrably insist, scripture is no exception. Scholars declare that to shy away from scripture simply because it is God's Holy Word is to do great injustice to the passage. Scripture should be open to the same careful scrutiny as is applied to any other writing. Certainly a careful study of God's Word to mankind would not cause us to dismiss scriptural utterances but would only serve to enhance our understanding of what is being transmitted to …

Collingwood's Idea Of History : The Development And Form Of Historical Inquiry, Timothy A. Hartin Apr 1984

Collingwood's Idea Of History : The Development And Form Of Historical Inquiry, Timothy A. Hartin

Honors Theses

History was long considered a somehow second-rate discipline, incapable of producing true knowledge like math or the hard sciences. Whether viewed as the handmaiden of theology in the Middle Ages or simply denied a place among the sciences by the latter-day positivists, history's independence and value as a study in its own right have been denied from many points of view at different times. R.G. Collingwood takes issue with this attitude towards history by assert its autonomy both in subject and method in his The Idea of History. His inquiry into the nature of history is divided into two parts. …

Design Principles And Applications In A Corporate Trademark The Krystal Company, Kurt Hyder Mar 1984

Design Principles And Applications In A Corporate Trademark The Krystal Company, Kurt Hyder

Honors Theses

This Honors thesis sets out to examine some significant aspects of corporate trademark design. The thesis will provide an analysis of a corporate trademark program, focusing on the recent trademark change by The Krystal Company. I wish to point out early in the paper that certain features of Krystal's design program, such as uniform, package, and architectural design were reviewed only briefly. This restriction was necessary to keep the research from becoming too vast and losing sight of the main objective of trademark design. The thesis consists of three main parts: a) The principles of design and graphic design, b) …

Wood Anatomy And Relationships Of Neowawraea (Euphorbiaceae), Dörthe S. Brandt, W. John Hayden Jan 1984

Wood Anatomy And Relationships Of Neowawraea (Euphorbiaceae), Dörthe S. Brandt, W. John Hayden

Honors Theses

Wood anatomy of three specimens of Neowawraea phyllanthoides Rock, a rare and endangered member of Euphorbiaceae endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, is described and compared with woods of other genera of subfamily Phyllanthoideae. Neowawraeahas often been associated or synonymized with Drypetes Vahl. Wood of Neowawraea is diffuse porous, perforation plates are simple, imperforate tracheary elements are thin-walled septate fiber-tracheids, rays are heterocellular and crystalliferous, and axial xylem parenchyma is restricted to a few scanty paratracheal and terminal cells. In several respects these results differ from earlier published descriptions of the wood of this taxon; these earlier descriptions are shown …

The Day Of Yahweh, Kathryn L. Muller Apr 1983

The Day Of Yahweh, Kathryn L. Muller

Honors Theses

In the study of the Old Testament, the concept of the Day of Yahweh has long been considered to be central to the prophets and their view of the future. Ladislav Cerny described it as a doctrine that "touches all the intellectial and emotional, the mythological and theological, the spiritual and ritual, the ideological as well as social elements of Hebrew religion. Furthermore, Cerny said, "without this doctrine Hebrew religion would not be such, as it is now known to us."

When studying the Day of Yahweh the initial question addresses the nature of that day. The Biblical references are …

The French Revolution : A Comparison Of The Attitudes Of Edmund Burke And Thomas Paine, Christine R. Chaires Apr 1982

The French Revolution : A Comparison Of The Attitudes Of Edmund Burke And Thomas Paine, Christine R. Chaires

Honors Theses

By 1789, when the French people were just becoming absorbed in revolutionary activity, both the United States and Britain already enjoyed relatively stable political systems which asserted fundamental rights of each individual and established a protection of these rights against moral and political infringement. To insure the perpetuation of these 'inalienable' rights, revolutionary Americans fought violently to break the oppressive bonds of a tyrannical monarch. The English, in 1688, more conservatively chose to build upon their existing modes of government. Because the French Revolution sought to abolish many principles on which the British government rested, it would seem logical for …

Concept Formation And Development In The Congenitally Blind Child, Kimberly J. Franco Apr 1982

Concept Formation And Development In The Congenitally Blind Child, Kimberly J. Franco

Honors Theses

T.D. Cutsforth once stated that "no single mental activity of the congenitally blind child is not distorted by the absence of sight." Blindness permeates the intellectual functioning of language, thought, comprehension and conceptualization. Ultimately, the child lacking vision will both understand and respond to the world in a manner unlike that of a sighted child. This incongruous interaction breeds frustration since the blind are a minority in a world which concentrates on the characteristics, needs, behaviors, and accomplishments of sighted individuals. Lacking the visual modality, the blind rely on the information about the objective world which they receive from people …

Personality And Behavioral Characteristics Important To The Coach/Athlete Relationship, Michael A. Zacharias Apr 1982

Personality And Behavioral Characteristics Important To The Coach/Athlete Relationship, Michael A. Zacharias

Honors Theses

Research in the area of sport psychology has grown tremendously over the past twenty years. One area, in particular, that has been researched a great deal is the idea of the typical athletic personality. (Fletcher and Dowell, 1971; Foster, 1977; Morgan and Johnson, 1978; and Morris, Vaccaro and Clarke, 1979 are examples.) Does the personality of the athlete differ from that of the non-athlete? Of particular concern are the areas of personality dealing with locus control and self-esteem. Locus of control is distributed along the internal/external dimension. Internal control was defined by Rotter, Livenant and Seeman (1962) as the perception …

The Attitudes Of Illinois Petroleum Jobbers About The Marketing Of Propane, Dale E. Houston Apr 1982

The Attitudes Of Illinois Petroleum Jobbers About The Marketing Of Propane, Dale E. Houston

Honors Theses

The study considers several hypotheses: the percentage of Illinois petroleum jobbers marketing propane will increase due to the fact that propane sales increase profitability, the Illinois propane market is expanding because it is less expensive than gasoline, fuel oil sales are decreasing because propane furnace installation is cheaper than oil furnaces, and propane furnaces are less expensive to maintain and operate.

The Problems In Research Within Juvenile Corrections, Laura Egerton Jan 1982

The Problems In Research Within Juvenile Corrections, Laura Egerton

Honors Theses

The research included in this evaluation had to meet two criteria. First, it had to be indexed in the 1980 or 1981 Sociological Abstracts of Social Source Citation Index. The research must also have been conducted in a correctional institution or in a diversion program. A diversion program is a community-based therapy program dealing primarily with status and first offenders. The goals of the program vary, but focus primarily on prevention of delinquency through early intervention. Of the over one hundred articles reviewed, only thirty met the criteria. The studies not included focused primarily upon either delinquents on probation or …

The history, goals and techniques of Kodaly's method will be outlined in the …

Assessment, Intervention And Treatment Of Geriatric Psychopathology : A Comparison Of The Medical And Behavioral Models, Susan C. Mcclintock Jan 1982

Assessment, Intervention And Treatment Of Geriatric Psychopathology : A Comparison Of The Medical And Behavioral Models, Susan C. Mcclintock

Honors Theses

The elderly represent nearly a third of the population in public psychiatric facilities. The social and physiological changes associated with aging can lead to a variety of psychiatric disturbances which necessitate institutionalization of the elderly individual. Treatment of these disturbances is likely to be based on the medical model of psychopathology, although findings indicate that behaviorally-oriented therapy may often be the more appropriate course of action. The reported findings carry implications pertinent to the future of geropsychology.

Is The West Responsible For Lenin's Rise To Power?, Stephen D. Ramsey Apr 1981

Is The West Responsible For Lenin's Rise To Power?, Stephen D. Ramsey

Honors Theses

The year 1917 is probably the most significant year in modern Russian history, Many people view this as the year of the Bolsheviks. Indeed, Lenin and his cohorts seized the reigns of government in November (all date will be given in New Style) of that year and propelled Russia down an untrodden path of history. The effects of this revolution now permeate the globe. Some view that fateful day as the beginning of man's salvation from the exploitation of capitalism. Others view it as the birth of a pernicious disease which must be eliminated in a final apocalyptic battle to …

Relationship Enhancement : A Study In Four Parts, Brett W. Oakley Jan 1981

Relationship Enhancement : A Study In Four Parts, Brett W. Oakley

Honors Theses

The concept of empathic communication evolved from a family therapy model originated by Bernard C. Gurney, Jr. called Relationship Enhancement. The major premise to this model is that if families can be taught to listen and speak to each other empathically, then the family itself could resolve their own interpersonal problems without reliance on a professional (Gurney, 1977).

National Food Brokers Association Members Communicate Attitudes About Women Working In Food Brokerage Positions, Dennis S. Moore

Honors Theses

The purpose of this study is to identify the attitudes of the National Food Brokers Association Members in the East North Central states about women working in the food brokerage positions of retail sales representative, sales supervisor, and sales manager. This study examines three hypotheses: (1) The small percentage of women in these positions is due to unawareness of the job titles and opportunities available, (2) The small percentage of women in these positions is due to the fact that top management believes male employees are more effective in relating to principles than women, and, (3) The small percentage of …

The Relationship Between Beethoven's Heiligenstadt Testament And His Nine Symphonies, Thomas Mitchell Apr 1980

The Relationship Between Beethoven's Heiligenstadt Testament And His Nine Symphonies, Thomas Mitchell

Honors Theses

The main consideration throughout all the paper will be. the correlation between Beethoven's symphonies and his Heiligenstadt Testament. Because the so-called "Battle" Symphony is not a true symphony at all (being written for a huge, mechanical contraption), it will not be dealt with at all.

The Cause Of Sobriety : David Lloyd George And Temperance Reform, Philip A. Krinsky Jan 1980

The Cause Of Sobriety : David Lloyd George And Temperance Reform, Philip A. Krinsky

Honors Theses

Temperance was a major British issue after World War I. Excessive drunkenness, not alcoholism per se, was the primary concern of the two parliamentary parties. When Lloyd George enter Parliament the two major parties were the Liberals and the Conservatives. Temperance was neither a problem that Parliament sought to quickly solve nor the single issue of Lloyd George's public career. Rather, temperance remained within a flux of political squabbling between the two parties and even among the respective blocs within each Party. Inevitably, compromises had to be made between the dissenting factions.

The Lb Wind-Tunnel, Larry Bennett Jan 1980

The Lb Wind-Tunnel, Larry Bennett

Honors Theses

A small subsonic wind-tunnel has been developed for further understanding of aerodynamic principles. This tunnel is small enough to be used on table tops so the student can get first-hand experience. The tunnel's working section is a clear plexiglass tube for easy viewing and provides ample work room. The biggest advantage of this tunnel is that it can be built in the average home workshop for approximately $60.00.

The Suffolk Campaign A Case Study, Brian S. Wills Dec 1979

The Suffolk Campaign A Case Study, Brian S. Wills

Honors Theses

"the Suffolk Campaign: A Case Study," covers the Civil War that began on April 11, 1863 and ended on May 3, 1863 and centered around the small Tidewater Virginia town of Suffolk. Suffolk's strategic prominence was derived from its access to the James River, through tributary (the Nansemond), and two major railroads which ran through the town--the Petersburg and Norfolk, and the Roanoke and Seaboard. The Confederates abandoned the town after McClellan's Peninsula Campaign made their position their untenable. Federal troops quickly entered Suffolk and established it as the first line of defense for Norfolk. Suffolk came under the military …

The Stylistic Characteristics Of Selected A Cappella Choral Works Of Ralph Vaughan Williams, James Bennighof Apr 1979

The Stylistic Characteristics Of Selected A Cappella Choral Works Of Ralph Vaughan Williams, James Bennighof

Honors Theses

Several factors were originally influential in my selection of this topic for study. First, I was interested in Ralph Vaughan Williams' music and his compositional style. Secondly, I had both an interest in and a certain degree of familiarity as a performer with the areas of choral music and folk music. Finally, Vaughan Williams' short a cappella choral works lent themselves well to investigation, because they had not received much study previously, and because they presented a homogeneous corpus of works which was appropriate for this type of survey.

An Insight Into Management Development Programs, Bretta A. Tulbert Jan 1979

An Insight Into Management Development Programs, Bretta A. Tulbert

Honors Theses

Management development can be defined as any form of training for managers to improve present job performance while preparing them for advancement into higher positions. It involves any attempt by a manager to improve his position by the acquisition of new knowledge, skills, and attitudes in an orderly manner. Management development involves more than a series of presentations; it is a growing process which develops both general and specific interest. This is the responsibility of the company and the individual. The programs should include continuous feedback of results, development of individual career plans, and application of executive development techniques.

Before …

Child Neglect, Katherine Earle Jan 1979

Child Neglect, Katherine Earle

Honors Theses

The constant change, fast pace, urbanization, and mobilization of our society has propagated the creation of many new and marvelous inventions. However, the waste products of increased individual stress and discontent have, in turn, created an atmosphere conducive to such things as child abuse and child neglect. It may not be determined if abuse and neglect are more prevalent now than in the past, but fortunately they are being more frequently reported, the first step in correcting the situation. Recently the issue of child abuse has been widely discussed and has come to the attention of the community and the …

The Measurement Of Self-Preoccupation, Steven W. Noles Jan 1979

The Measurement Of Self-Preoccupation, Steven W. Noles

Honors Theses

In recent years, there has been an increasing amount of interest in research on the extent and manner in which a person views him/herself in various settings. Some refer to this as self-preoccupation (Sarason, 1975, 1978; Wine, 1971), while others call it self-awareness, a state (Duval and Wicklund, 1972) or self-consciousness, a trait, (Buss and Scheier, 1976). It has been hypothesized that human consciousness is bidirectional; that is, it can be focused inward to the self or outward to the external environment (Bandura, 1977). There is some research and theory that suggests that the focus of this attention, influences the …

Coke, Wentworth, And The Drafting Of The Petition Of Right, Frances S. Taylor Apr 1978

Coke, Wentworth, And The Drafting Of The Petition Of Right, Frances S. Taylor

Honors Theses

In 1628, members of the English Parliament confronted the problem of arbitrary rule by the king, Charles I. Wishing to prevent future royal violations of their fundamental liberties, both houses sought a remedy. Their efforts culminated in the Petition of Right, a statement of the rights of Englishmen under the common law. While many men could be named as contributors to the Petition's success, Sir Edward Coke and Sir Thomas Wentworth, members of the House ofCommons, stand out as two of its major architects. Without their contributions, the Petition would have succumbed to outside pressures early in the session. Biographers …

The Hammer And The Cross : The Conversion Of Scandinavia, James E. Cumbie Apr 1978

The Hammer And The Cross : The Conversion Of Scandinavia, James E. Cumbie

Honors Theses

The advent of a new religious faith is always a valuable historical tool. Shits in religion uncover interesting aspects of the societies involved. This is particularly true when an indigenous, national faith is supplanted by an alien one externally introduced. Such is the case in medieval Scandinavia, when Norse paganism was ousted by Latin Christianity.
