Why Teams? : Assessing The Incorporation And Development Of Teams At J.P. Morgan's Delaware Private Client Group-Operations, Christine M. Wang
Honors Theses
J.P. Morgan Services, Inc. implemented teams into its Private Client Group-Operations (PCG-Ops) located in Wilmington, Delaware during the summer of 1996, in an initiative the company called Realignment. The goal of my senior project is to explore the use of teams in corporate settings. By assessing how consistent the Private Client Group's Realignment initiative is with the current team development, organizational change, and organizational development literature. In this project four main concepts will be examined:
l . The reasons why JP Morgan changed from a traditional hierarchical structure to one that is team based.
2. The results of the six …
Ubiquitin-Mediated Proteolysis During Gametogenis In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Hall Thomas Mcgee
Ubiquitin-Mediated Proteolysis During Gametogenis In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Hall Thomas Mcgee
Honors Theses
Scientists in the field of cell biology have focused considerable attention on a unicellular species of green algae known as Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. This organism is relatively common in bodies of fresh water and some types of soil, but most of the attention is due to its value as a model for biochemical studies. This laboratory has undertaken a broad study of the species including exploration into a special class of proteins, called heat shock proteins, and certain biochemical processes of the organism. The work herein described is a part of this latter study, and also a preliminary step in a …
Effective Nonprofit Organizations Through Leadership And Alignment, Megan Fleischman
Effective Nonprofit Organizations Through Leadership And Alignment, Megan Fleischman
Honors Theses
As nonprofit organizations grow in size and number, there is an ever-growing need to strength in leadership within these organizations that will help to combat the general ineffective nature of nonprofits. This leadership must follow a model that emphasizes the essential nature of a cooperative relationship among all of the primary leadership entities that exist in nonprofit organizations. Without a balance among these forces, nonprofit organizations risk their productivity and effectiveness.

A Cultural Test Of Transforming Leadership Using Three Case Studies : W.E.B. Dubois, Leopold Sedar Senghor, And Vaclav Havel, Christie Getman
Honors Theses
The overall goal of this research project is to do a comprehensive study that integrates an undergraduate career in leadership studies with a thorough, critical examination of a topic that is of interest to me. Since beginning course work at the Jepson School, I have felt that a majority of the theories and concepts studied have been primarily focused on the leader and the follower, and their relationship. My goal is to examine the theory of transforming leadership through specific case studies of transforming leaders, and test how the element of culture affects this transforming leadership.

Programs such as Empowered Leaders of Hanover County High Schools therefore represent attempt to respond to the need for modem leaders and a recognition of the value and imporrtance of the instruction of leadership competencies …
Lifting The Bar : Leadership In The Attorney-Client Relationship, Dennis C. Barghaan
Lifting The Bar : Leadership In The Attorney-Client Relationship, Dennis C. Barghaan
Honors Theses
VA State Senator Mark Earley, a lawyer by trade, addressed the Norfolk-Portsmouth Bar Association in October 1995, and claimed that the profession, in order to survive, must engage in both serious talk and sincere action. As a result, much of the negative feeling about lawyers within American society will begin to change as the public sees attorneys for what they should be -- leaders in their everyday interactions with clients.

During the spring 1996 semester, the Jepson School of Leadership Studies offered a special topics course titled "Leadership in Crisis." The course, co-taught by Dr. Richard Couto and former Virginia Attorney-General Mary-Sue Terry, intended to "offer students CPR instruction to sustain organizational and personal vision" (Couto) for a group or organization dealing with crisis. Members of the class were instructed in crisis taxonomy and classification, crisis in diverse contexts, crisis management plans, crisis perspectives from both inside and outside of organizations, and the role of the personal in dealing with crisis. The faculty instructors determined that although the course had …
Leadership Skills : A Course Proposal, Joe Rinaldi
Leadership Skills : A Course Proposal, Joe Rinaldi
Honors Theses
Theory based classes are the foundation that future leadership is built upon. These classes provide a useful framework that leadership majors can draw from for the rest of their lives, but this ignores where they are now. The leadership school focuses too much on leadership beyond graduation and not enough on the limitless opportunities for leadership that are available to students today. The leadership school has no interaction with the vast number of leadership training courses that are taught to every group from Resident Assistants to Orientation Counselors to the various honor councils and governmental bodies that flourish on campus. …
The Prophet And The Preacher : An Exploration Of Charismatic Leadership In Two American Religious Movements, Stefanie R. Mathew
The Prophet And The Preacher : An Exploration Of Charismatic Leadership In Two American Religious Movements, Stefanie R. Mathew
Honors Theses
From its very inception. the general, overarching goal of this study has been to integrate two academic disciplines that had a relatively small amount of previous scholarship uniting them. This paper has shown that it is quite possible to intermingle the fields of leadership studies and religion successfully. The specific purpose of this paper was the further exploration of the topic of charismatic leadership in a relatively untouched context, that of radical religious groups in modem America. The result of this project is a lengthy treatment of the topic of charismatic leadership in two specific case studies, and the final …

Calcium Metabolismn In Volvox Carteri, Bridget Anne Neville
Calcium Metabolismn In Volvox Carteri, Bridget Anne Neville
Honors Theses
Calcium metabolism is involved in many ways in the cellular activities of the colonial green alga, Volvox carteri. Various drugs that are known in other systems to cause specific changes in calcium metabolism, gave rise to various visible metabolic effects in this study. These effects provide evidence for calcium's role in Volvox growth and development and in its cytoskeleton. Another way that calcium exerts its effect on Volvox is by acting as a second messenger in a G-protein/inositol phosphate signal transduction pathway.
This study also supports the fact that cytoskeletal components are important for development in Volvox. Both microtubules and …

The third phase consisted of original research.
The Method Of Radicle Emergence In Phytolacca Americana (Pokeweed), Staci A. Van Winkle
The Method Of Radicle Emergence In Phytolacca Americana (Pokeweed), Staci A. Van Winkle
Honors Theses
Germination is a key element in the development of a plant. This process encompasses several stages, one of which is the elongation of the radicle tip. This process has been noted to occur by different methods such as rapid mitotic division or cell elongation. However, such a mechcmism has not been studied in Phytolacca americana (pokeweed). It was the intention of this study to observe at the cellular level the nature of the Phytolacca americana radicle during normal germination. This was done using a routine histological microtechnique which involves embedding in paraffin and sectioning with a microtome. The sections were …

Ideals Of The Lipschitz Class, Konstantin G. Kulev
Ideals Of The Lipschitz Class, Konstantin G. Kulev
Honors Theses
In this paper, a classification of the closed ideals of the Little Oh Lipschitz class of functions on the interval [0,1] is provided. The technique used to classify the ideals of the class of continuous functions is modified and applied to the Little Oh Lipschitz class. It is shown that every ideal of these two classes has the form I = {f : flE = 0} for some closed set E C [0, 1]. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the same technique cannot be successfully applied to the classification of the closed ideals of the Big Oh Lipschitz class.

Wall Street is full of many unusual characters. They appear frequently in the newspaper headlines, on the evening news, and now on the Internet. They are portrayed both as villains such as Michael Milken or Ivan Boesky and as heroes such as Warren Buffett or Martin Zwieg. While these people may seem very distant at times they really impact each one of us every day, whether or not we are aware of it. The companies we conduct our routine transactions with are financed through them, our retirement plans our dependent on them, and even our jobs rest on the success …

The purpose of the study was to provide new information on the biogeographical distribution of small mammals in southeastern Tennessee and to aid the Tennessee River Gorge Trust in its effort to have the gorge designated as a Biosphere Reserve. A total of 122 mammals representing ten species were collected from four different sites in the gorge. As a result of this study, new information was obtained that requires a range extension for the southern short-tailed …
General Joseph Wheeler And The Mounted Rifles: Cavalry Proves Its Worth In The Chattanooga Area, Josh Correll
General Joseph Wheeler And The Mounted Rifles: Cavalry Proves Its Worth In The Chattanooga Area, Josh Correll
Honors Theses
There is a commonly held opinion among some historians that cavalry, men fighting from horseback, were obsolete by the time of the American Civil War. The problem with this perception is the definition of obsolescence. While it is true that cavalry as a charging, frontline force was mostly ineffective, this was not the kind of cavalry used in that conflict on a large scale. Instead, a new kind of cavalry, the Mounted Rifles, was put into practice by some of the commanders, most notably one of the Confederacy's youngest cavalry generals, Joseph Wheeler. Wheeler's cavalry instead worked within an army, …
