An Analysis Of The Impact Of Foreign Education On Leadership : Mary Robinson, Benazir Bhutto, And Shimon Peres, Maia Carter Jan 1998

An Analysis Of The Impact Of Foreign Education On Leadership : Mary Robinson, Benazir Bhutto, And Shimon Peres, Maia Carter

Honors Theses

The world today. going into the twenty-first century is much "smaller" than the world in 1900. Most scholars, business leaders, and politicians would agree that we are all part of an increasingly global community. The fax machine, telephone, and internet allow for instantaneous communications with people around the world. In addition, most professionals are forced to come into contact with members of other cultures, whether it be for academic research or commence. This study arises out of the question, what implications does globalization have for leaders, and how are leaders affected by extended experiences, such as study abroad, in which …

For Black Leaders : A Study Of West African And African-American Leadership, Markita M. Boney Jan 1998

For Black Leaders : A Study Of West African And African-American Leadership, Markita M. Boney

Honors Theses

Ninety-two years ago WEB DuBois wrote, "The Problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the Color Line." This line is not just one experiences by blacks or merely a problem for the United States, but, rather, a problem the entire world faces. Many events in this century have supported his statement. However, I feel that the problem for Black America is the lack of intellectual and spiritual leadership within our community.

Trends Affecting Both Legitimate Business And The Italian-American Mafia And The Resulting Changes In The Leadership Process, Kimberley M. Reiners Jan 1998

Trends Affecting Both Legitimate Business And The Italian-American Mafia And The Resulting Changes In The Leadership Process, Kimberley M. Reiners

Honors Theses

The past two decades have brought with it a wave of movies and novels attempting to explain, or at least accurately portray, the Italian-American Mafia. One who has viewed the Godfather quickly becomes fascinated by this subculture and its ability to exist simultaneously with the rest of society. Moviegoers are mesmerized by codes of loyalty, silence, and kinship. However, much of what the public perceives as fact is little more than fabricated fiction. Part of what makes this world so intriguing is so little is known about it. For example, until 1986 there was no solid proof that the Mafia …

Dance As An Instrument For Social Change Leadership, Meredith Mccanse Jan 1998

Dance As An Instrument For Social Change Leadership, Meredith Mccanse

Honors Theses

From responses of audience members, a domestic violence expert, and a Dance professor, it is apparent that the performance of Silent Cries was a catalyst of change. While not all viewers were raised to a new level of consciousness, a number of participants reported raised awareness and/or intentions to take action in support of domestic violence survivors. An overwhelming majority of those polled reported some form of emotional response to the dance. This is evidence that even with a well-educated audience, dance has the power to make a connection and move hearts. The domestic violence expert as well as general …

Cross-Cultural Leadership Training, Merilee Karr Jan 1998

Cross-Cultural Leadership Training, Merilee Karr

Honors Theses

Research is cross-cultural training is a young and growing field. The practitioners included in this research have yet to develop a comprehensive training based on needs or desired outcomes. Therefore the level of understanding for this growing area of human resources and increasingly important issue in global competition has yet to reach a point where managers can confidently justify the expense to the company. That is not to say that some companies do not see the need for this type of training, but without proper proof of the effectiveness of the expense, it is difficult to convince executives of its …

Leadership In William Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet And Julius Caesar, Kelly Lynn Pearce Jan 1998

Leadership In William Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet And Julius Caesar, Kelly Lynn Pearce

Honors Theses

The body of my paper is divided into several sections. In the first section, I will briefly discuss the existing literature on leadership and Shakespeare and my methodology in determining aspects of Romeo and Juliet and Julius Caesar that pertain to leadership. In Part II of my paper, I will provide an overview of the Elizabethan world-view and history, focusing primarily on perceptions of leadership, in order to provide a context for discussion. Part Ill will be an evaluation of Romeo and Juliet. First I will analyze the play as to how it reflects Elizabethan concerns regarding leadership. Immediately following …

Leadership Curricula And The Changing Organization, Matthew Repella Jan 1998

Leadership Curricula And The Changing Organization, Matthew Repella

Honors Theses

This project involves many issues regarding organizational leadership. It seems in the past, all people thought of was management. True, those were different times, when manufacturing was the primary means of employment and factory workers were everywhere. As businesses have progressed through the industrial revolution and the service industry has become more prevalent, the workforce has changed with the times. This requires new thoughts on organizational leadership. It cannot be said that leadership does not change as the situation and/or the followers change. Likewise, as we progress into future, un-chartered territory, leadership will be affected. This paper seeks to determine …

Leadership In The Field Of Drumming, John O'Donnell Jr. Jan 1998

Leadership In The Field Of Drumming, John O'Donnell Jr.

Honors Theses

Music has been an important part of my life for a long time. I have played the drums for seven years and have been interested in the drumming industry for just as long. As a student of leadership I have often pondered how I would combine my studies with my music to find a successful and enjoyable career. If there is one thing I have learned as a student of leadership it is that leadership is everywhere. The subject is so vast and so young that, given the innumerable possibilities, the body of research is quite small. Leadership is most …

A Study Of The Methods And Strategies Used For Teaching Spanish In One Private School In The Hamilton County Area, Jennifer S. Dantzler Dec 1997

A Study Of The Methods And Strategies Used For Teaching Spanish In One Private School In The Hamilton County Area, Jennifer S. Dantzler

Honors Theses

Foreign Language instruction is a useful tool in the schools. It allows for cultural exposure and language formations. Foreign language instruction is especially important at the lower elementary levels because younger students are able to learn a language much quicker than older students. Also, research has shown that foreign language taught at the elementary level increases standardized test scores in verbal intelligence, mental flexibility, reading and even math. The College Board noted that students with more than five years of foreign language instruction scored higher on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) than students with little or no foreign language. Students …

Rethinking The Nursing Paradigm: The Ethics Of Gatekeeping In American And British Nursing, David C. Grandy Jul 1997

Rethinking The Nursing Paradigm: The Ethics Of Gatekeeping In American And British Nursing, David C. Grandy

Honors Theses

In the British National Health Service (NHS), the general practice physician (GP) serves as gatekeeper to resources.1 In the United States, managed care physicians, who attempt to contain health care expenditures by establishing priorities and strictly regulating treatment accessibility, necessarily employ gatekeeping responsibilities in practice.2 However, both systems of health care generally overlook the potential contribution of nurses in identifying and implementing effective methods of resource allocation. The central focus of this thesis includes two primary assertions. First, I will argue that nurses currently function as gatekeepers both in England and the United States, and that the traditional nursing paradigm …

Power Of The Party: An Assessment Of Political Party Impact On The Nomination Processes For The U.S. House Of Representatives, Cary Gibson May 1997

Power Of The Party: An Assessment Of Political Party Impact On The Nomination Processes For The U.S. House Of Representatives, Cary Gibson

Honors Theses

In 1942, prominent political scientist E.E. Schattschneider said of the importance of the nomination to political parties: "Unless the party makes authoritative and effective nominations, it cannot stay in business...The nature of the nomination procedure determines the nature of the party; he who can make nominations is the owner of the party."l Statements such as this articulate the importance of the nominating power to political parties: the ability to make effective nominations is an integral part of their function in the electoral system. However, throughout this century, American political parties have been witness to a startling decline in their ability …

Electrophysiological Correlates Of Reading Processes In School Age Children, Catherine E. Scott May 1997

Electrophysiological Correlates Of Reading Processes In School Age Children, Catherine E. Scott

Honors Theses

Orthographic and phonological decoding skills are known to be important for learning to read. In an attempt to develop physiologically based screening tools which may identify children at risk for developing these skills, Auditory Event Related Potentials (ERP) were recorded from 84 nine-year-olds to a series of Probe tones while they were engaged in a series of orthographic, phonological, and spelling tasks. Electrodes were applied over both hemispheres at the frontal, temporal, and parietal regions of the scalp. Analyses focus on the relationship between hemisphere differences and children's performance on each of these tasks.

The Pratt & Whitney 4060: Power For The Future, Gregory Sumner

Honors Theses

The Pratt & Whitney 4000 engine platform is considered the most economical turbofan engine in its class. It is advertised as providing the most efficient service and the most reliability for air carriers. United Airlines utilizes the company's engines. The paper begins with basic turbine engine theory and moves on to engine classifications, where the Pratt & Whitney 4060 is introduced. The systems are covered in detail. Maintenance areas of service and inspections are described to show how personnel may interact with the computers. Finally, a description of activities during the author's internship describe the interesting facets of a semester …

Toward An Authentically Anti-Racist Curriculum, Jeremy D. Dowsett Apr 1997

Toward An Authentically Anti-Racist Curriculum, Jeremy D. Dowsett

Honors Theses

Below I will address the failure of racial essentialist multiculturalism's approach toward combating racism, the confining and backward logic upon which identity politics multiculturalism is founded, the excesses of poststructuralist multiculturalism, and finally, in an attempt to show these theories in practice, I will move to the classroom and explore the ramifications of these strands of multiculturalism on the teaching of history and English. Part Two of this essay consists of a curriculum designed to address the shortcomings of the pedagogies mentioned above.

Michigan State Government Employment Sector: Are We In Line With The National Trends?, Thomas Walter Cronkright Ii Apr 1997

Michigan State Government Employment Sector: Are We In Line With The National Trends?, Thomas Walter Cronkright Ii

Honors Theses

Examines the national trends of employment to make a comparison for Michigan State government employment. Results show that Michigan's public employment trends do not follow national employment trends in a comparable way. Michigan is distinct from the nation for several reasons: a hiring freeze placed on Michigan State Departments, higher levels of union participation and employee pay, and benefits packages that cost more than the Executive Branch of the U.S. government. Thus, either Michigan provides superior benefits or it pays a premium for those benefits. Suggests further research is needed.

Angle-Resolved Study Of Ar 2p₁/₂,₃/₂⁻1Ns,D Resonant Auger Decay, Marc Andrew Humphrey Apr 1997

Angle-Resolved Study Of Ar 2p₁/₂,₃/₂⁻1Ns,D Resonant Auger Decay, Marc Andrew Humphrey

Honors Theses

Angle-resolved measurements of the Ar 2p1/2,3/2-14s,3d,4d and 2p3/2-14s,3d,4d resonant Auger transitions have been carried out using photons from an undulator beamline at the Advanced Light Source of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The intensity distributions and angular distribution anisotropy (β) parameters have been reported for nearly all of the possible 3p4nl final ionic states. These results further verify the predictions of the spectator model for the 2p1/2,3/2-14s resonances and the subsequent breakdown of this model for the 2p1/2,3/2-13d and 2p1/2,3/2-14d relative intensities. This work …

Temporal Flocking And Cacophony Simulating Agent Communication In A Noisy Environment, Jessica R. Crawford Apr 1997

Temporal Flocking And Cacophony Simulating Agent Communication In A Noisy Environment, Jessica R. Crawford

Honors Theses

Realistic communication is one of the most difficult aspects of simulating group behavior because the patterns produced by group communication are complex and not easily definable. In this paper, we present a model, developed using artificial life methodology, for creating simulations of group communication. Our model employs autonomous, artificial agents to produce emergent group behavior that resembles the communication patterns of a group, specifically, a flock of birds. Each agent collects information about its environment and its neighbors and follows a set of rules designed to meet both group goals and individual agent goals. Because we seek to establish emergent …

On The Automatic Generation Of Network Protocol Simulators, Andrew Chen Apr 1997

On The Automatic Generation Of Network Protocol Simulators, Andrew Chen

Honors Theses

Computers communicate with each other over various communication networks via a language known as a protocol. The design of the protocol can have a significant impact on the efficiency (and effectiveness) of the network. Because building an actual network to test the performance (and reliability) of a new protocol is rather expensive and time consuming, there is an interest in simulating network protocols in order to determine how efficient the communication network is. We are therefore interested in automatically generating simulators that could measure the performance of the new protocols. There are two main parts to this project. The first …

Parallel Programming, Peter Dailey Apr 1997

Parallel Programming, Peter Dailey

Honors Theses

The speed of technology is always increasing, especially in the field of computing. Unfortunately, the size of the problems needing to be solved are also growing in many areas. In order to keep up with this, parallel computing has become an important research area. The term parallel computing essentially refers to using multiple processors cooperating to solve a problem. For certain problems this can speed up the solution by a factor ofN, the number of processors being used. There are algorithms, for which there is no speed increase due to certain dependencies.

The Effects Of Enrichment Treatments On Jaguar Behavior At The Warner Park Zoo, Miranda Cagle Mar 1997

The Effects Of Enrichment Treatments On Jaguar Behavior At The Warner Park Zoo, Miranda Cagle

Honors Theses

Not long ago, Sasha walked onto grass for the first time in seven years. For Pasha, it was the first in six. The two jaguar inhabitants of the Warner Park Zoo, Sasha, a nine-year-old female, and Pasha, her eight-year-old half-brother, were transferred to a new enclosure on 12 November 1995. Prior to that date, they had been housed in a smaller cage with a cement floor. The new enclosure was a long-awaited improvement for the zoo, designed to house two of its most wellknown animals. It was expected that the new enclosure would promote more natural behavior in the two …

The Death Penalty And Public Opinion, Eve Errickson Mar 1997

The Death Penalty And Public Opinion, Eve Errickson

Honors Theses

In this research, I will examine public opinion on the death penalty from 1972 to the present. In doing so, I will show that as the awareness of violence and crime increases, support for the death penalty increases. I intend by the consideration of prevalent trends and ideas over the past twenty-five years to show that awareness of crime and prejudice against ethnic groups traditionally associated with crime often dictates public opinion of the death penalty. As these tendencies become more apparent, it will become clear that the Supreme Court's confidence in mitigating and aggravating factors are not entirely valid, …

"Vox Populi, Vox Dei" - A Discussion Of Dissent Within The Modern Catholic Church, Sleven W. Suomi Jan 1997

"Vox Populi, Vox Dei" - A Discussion Of Dissent Within The Modern Catholic Church, Sleven W. Suomi

Honors Theses

The final question is: what happens in the meantime? Is it effective to dissent while conservatives hold power and clearty are not about to make any major changes? What good does it do to repeatedly bang one's head against the wall when progress is not being made? There is no one simple answer to this question, but rather several applicable ones. The first possible answer is that dissent currently does little good. The conservative hierarchy is still the dominant force within Catholicism. This hierarchy has made a habit, evidenced by the birth control debate, of pressing its conservative agenda despite …

Present To Future : The Innovations Of Leadership Studies, Christopher Hartman Engels Jan 1997

Present To Future : The Innovations Of Leadership Studies, Christopher Hartman Engels

Honors Theses

Formal leadership education is the latest craze at the secondary level of education. Private high schools have for years stated in their brochures that their school produces leaders. However, only recently are these same schools clearly articulating a more formal structure in leadership education. An in-depth case study analysis of three private high schools in Virginia will not only allow for a look at their leadership curricula, but will allow for conclusion to be made about the best possible means of teaching leadership.

An Application Of Zen Philosophy To A Modern Conceptualization Of Leadership, John Williams Jan 1997

An Application Of Zen Philosophy To A Modern Conceptualization Of Leadership, John Williams

Honors Theses

The purpose of this project is to determine what relationships, if any, exist between Zen Buddhism and modern conceptualizations of leadership. In a review of existing literature, no analysis was found that examined the relationship between concepts associated with leadership theory and Zen principles. Hence, in order to explore these issues, I employed the following basic procedure. First I identified a modern representation of theories of leadership. This step involved an examination of existing theories of leadership, and a survey in which the faculty at the Jepson School of Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond ranked a set of …

Leadership And Its Impact On Young People Attending American Red Cross Youth Development Conference, Colleen M. Lynam Jan 1997

Leadership And Its Impact On Young People Attending American Red Cross Youth Development Conference, Colleen M. Lynam

Honors Theses

My involvement with the American Red Cross began in the fall of 1996. After many phone calls and meetings to talk about responsibilities and requirements as a volunteer, I decided to do my Jepson Internship as the Youth Coordinator for the Red Cross. During my semester downtown on Main Street, I learned a great deal about non-profit organizations in general and the Red Cross specifically. The employees there became both my role models and my friends. As the fall semester came to a close, we talked about the possibility of my continuing my association with the Red Cross by finding …
