Corticosterone Response In A Learned Helplessness Model Of Depression, Courtney M. Cartwright
Corticosterone Response In A Learned Helplessness Model Of Depression, Courtney M. Cartwright
Honors Theses
This purpose of this study was to quantify both behavioral and biological markers of stress (i.e. distress vocalizations, plasma corticosterone) in the chick stress-separation paradigm. In this study, chicks were isolated from companions for either 5,10,15,20,40, or 60 minutes and distress vocalizations were recorded. In addition, one group was tested in the presence of social companions for 60 minutes. Blood was collected from half of the subjects immediately following the testing period and was also collected in a no-test group to establish plasma corticosterone basal levels. Isolation produced a significant elevation in distress vocalizations and corticosterone. The pattern of distress …

Civil War Medicine: Crisis And Heroism In The Medical Profession, 1861 - 1865, Diana Frances Semmes
Honors Theses
This thesis uses a variety of sources to look at the medical profession during the Civil War era. Both primary sources and secondary sources provide information on the perspectives of the key players during the period as well as an understanding of the knowledge present at that time and the methods and practices employed. Most of the research has been done using the J. D. Williams Library on the University of Mississippi main campus though it has been supplemented by books in my own personal collection, items loaned from Dr. Neff’s collection, online resources such as the Library of Congress …

Ecotourism In Costa Rica: A Study Of The Viabilities And Impacts Of Three Ecotourism Models, Corey Harmon Rogers
Honors Theses
This paper examines three ecotourism endeavors in Costa Rica in order to answer the following question: can an enterprise fulfill all the definitional requirements for ecotourism and at the same time be both economically and environmentally viable? I first provide a discussion of the origins and conceptual views of ecotourism, then chart the evolution of ecotourism in Costa Rica. Next, three case studies are presented, each representing a different ecotourism model found in the country. Data presented in the case studies were compiled from site-specific primary data sets and interviews, Costa Rican government primary sources, and academic publications. For each …

Dental Anomalies In Two Species Of Canids: Red Fox (Vulpes Vulpes) And Gray Fox (Urocyon Cinereoargenteus), Teresa Gisburne
Honors Theses
Samples of 510 gray fox and 150 red fox from southern Illinois were examined for the presence of congenital dental abnormalities. Anomalies were found in 177 gray fox (34.7%) and 25 red fox (16.6%). The most frequent anomalies were oligodonty in both species. The major case of oligodonty was in m3. Anomalies affecting the placement of the tooth (rotations, misalignments) were the next most prominent abnormalities observed. One red fox showed polydonty, and two gray fox showed varying degrees of connation. Other anomalies were seen infrequently. The results from the red fox population are consistent with previous studies; however, the …

The Effect Of Female Server's Attractiveness On Restaurant Tipping, Anne M. Wisneski
The Effect Of Female Server's Attractiveness On Restaurant Tipping, Anne M. Wisneski
Honors Theses
This paper presents the results of a field experiment designed to test the hypothesis that restaurant patrons (particularly men) would leave larger tips for an attractive versus unattractive female server. The author manipulated server attractiveness by varying her appearance before shirts as a food server at a popular restaurant. Contrary to the hypothesis, patrons (both men and women) left comparable sized tips in the attractive and unattractive server conditions. Explanations for this null effect are discussed in the contest of research on the effect of server attractiveness on tipping and perceived tipping norms.

The Effects Of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (Pcbs) On Nerve Growth Factor (Ngf) In The Developing Frog, Xenopus Laevis, Cari Delong
Honors Theses
Polychlorinated biphenyls are ubiquitous, persistent environmental contaminants that cause a variety of adverse health effects wildlife and humans. PCBs are the major contaminant in the Kalamazoo River Superfund Site, in which the Environmental Institute is funded to study. Projects at the Environmental Institute are focused on developing molecular biotechnology tools that will improve environmental risk assessment. Previous acute studies involved the exposure of developing tadpoles, Xenopus laevis to PCBs through aquarium water in order to measure gene expression. Nerve growth factor (NGF) gene expression showed changes in these previous studies. NGF is a neurotrophic factor that regulates the growth and …
Narrating The Middle Ground : B The Examination Of Objects In The Modern Genre Of Immigrant Fiction, Meagna A. Patinella
Narrating The Middle Ground : B The Examination Of Objects In The Modern Genre Of Immigrant Fiction, Meagna A. Patinella
Honors Theses
Dislocated objects tell stories about the places they come from, their migration, and their new surroundings. More importantly, they disclose the narratives of people that possess or interact with them. In this paper I examine objects present in novels ofimmigration and transnational movement, for objects in such fictions are most noticeably dislodged from their original or expected context. Their relocation allows me to interpret them and their narratives, which in turn, allows me to think about the genre of immigrant fiction in a new light.
Illuminating A Space For Women And Rhetoric, Lindsey M. Fox
Illuminating A Space For Women And Rhetoric, Lindsey M. Fox
Honors Theses
My overarching concerns are for the place and power of women in rhetoric and democracy. This concern developed during my study of classical rhetoric, when I noticed an obvious absence of women in rhetoric. For example, John Poulakos and Takis Poulakos state that any "ordinary person" could play a role on the political stage in Athens (34). This reference to "ordinary people" is proof that women were made invisible because, as George A. Kennedy explains, in classical Athens, democracy was only for "an assembly of all adult male citizens" (16). Male citizens, then, were actually rather extra-ordinary. Because democracy …

Mapping Of Diepoxybutane Damage In The Cytochrome B Domain Of Mitochondrial Dna And The Β-Globin Domain Of Nuclear Chicken Dna Using Quantitative Pcr, Justin Juskewitch
Honors Theses
Diepoxybutane (DEB), a known industrial carcinogen, reacts with DNA primarily at the N7 position of deoxyguanosine residues and creates interstrand cross-links at the sequence 5'-GNC. Since N7-N7 cross-links cause DNA to fragment upon heating, quantative polymerase chain reaction (QPCR) is being used in this experiment to measure the amount of DEB damage (lesion frequency) with three different targets-mitochondrial (unpackaged), open chromatin region, and closed chromatin region. Initial measurements of DEB damage within these three targets were not consistent because the template DNA was not the limiting reagent in the PCR. Follow-up PCR trials using a limiting amount of DNA are …
Valuing Servants Ends : A New Theory Of Ethical Service, Patricia Grace Devlin
Valuing Servants Ends : A New Theory Of Ethical Service, Patricia Grace Devlin
Honors Theses
Many of today's universities encourage students to develop an ethic of service. Administrators, faculty, and staff members accompany students in campus-wide service activities; a number of collegiate honor societies reward students who engage in community service; and some academic programs require students to volunteer with local non-profit organizations. At its best, service learning inspires students to make a general commitment to service. The current emphasis placed on service learning in today's educational system reveals an emerging academic perspective not only on the value service has as an educational device but also on the significant role service plays in society. For …

Type Of Muscle Present In Adult Amphibian Lymphatic Heart Based On The Dna Sequence Of The Myosin Heavy Chain, Maribeth Morral
Honors Theses
Water and plasma are forced from the capillaries into the interstitial fluid. This fluid is useful l as it moves materials between cells. Most of this fluid is collected in the capillarie of a second circulatory system, the lymphatic system. The first function of such a system is returning the excess blood plasma, now o as lymph, that has accumulated in the tissue spaces. Lymph flows from small lymph capillaries into lymph vessels that are similar to veins in having valves that prevent back flow. Lymph vessels collect to lymph nodes, lymph organs, or to the cardiovascular system at the …

Comparative Population Dynamics Of Freshwater Dinoflagellates Of The Genera Peridinium And Peridiniopsis, Andy Canion
Honors Theses
Freshwater dinoflagellates, like their marine relatives, have the potential to reach large population sizes known as blooms. Though they are not toxic like some marine forms, freshwater blooms may have a large impact in their respective ecosystem. This study investigated the temporal and spatial changes in population density of four Peridinium species (P. deflandrei, P. volzii, P. wisconsinense, and P. limbatum) and one Peridiniopsis species (Peridiniopsis polonicium) in Boondoggle Lake, a shallow lake (4.5 m) in northern Mississippi (Lafayette Co.). On each sampling date, measurements of the abiotic environment were made, including dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, and turbidity. Also, water …

Antibiotic Resistance In Northern Mississippi Wetlands, Shama Moktan
Antibiotic Resistance In Northern Mississippi Wetlands, Shama Moktan
Honors Theses
Bacterial resistance to antibacterial agents is a condition in which there is no susceptibility or decreased susceptibility to antibacterial agents that ordinarily cause cell death or inhibition of bacteria. Bacterial resistance to antibacterial agents is a quantitative measurement of the efficiency or concentration expressed in micrograms per milliliter or as inhibition zones in millimeters for the diffusion technique of an antibacterial agent against a specific bacterium. In vitro methods for measurement of antibacterial activity are available that are based on testing increased concentrationsof antibacterial agent against a bacterial isolate to identify at which concentration the growth of the bacterium is …
Feeding Behaviour And Niche Overlap Of Two Species Of Wolf Spiders, Winter Lee Williams
Feeding Behaviour And Niche Overlap Of Two Species Of Wolf Spiders, Winter Lee Williams
Honors Theses
The diets of two species of spiders in the genus Rabidosa, Rabidosa punctulata and R. rabida, were intensively studied. These two species generally inhabit the same fields, but display very different life histories. This study has three major objectives. (1) Quantitatively address the commonly held belief that these spiders are opportunistic predators (Le., predators that take prey in the abundances in which they occur in the environment). (2) Measure the degree of niche overlap in diet for the two species (as a measure of the potential for competition). (3) Speculate on whether the overlap in diet or other factors may …
A Psychometric Investigation Of Measures Of Meaning, Gratitude, And Psychological Health, Natalie Lynn Cathcart
A Psychometric Investigation Of Measures Of Meaning, Gratitude, And Psychological Health, Natalie Lynn Cathcart
Honors Theses
Logotherapy, developed by Viktor Frankl, is a philosophy, a personality theory, and a means of treating emotional difficulties and establishing a sense of meaning and purpose in life. Meaning is the attempt to understand how events in life fit into a larger context. Gratitude is a generalized tendency to recognize and respond with appreciative emotion to other people’s benevolence. Gratitude is important to logotherapy because gratitude can be viewed as an attitude that flmctions as a pathway to meaning. Research suggests that both meaning and gratitude are positively linked to well-being and that a lack of meaning is linked to …

Visual Expectations: Using Machine Learning To Identify Patterns In Psychological Data, Skyler Place
Visual Expectations: Using Machine Learning To Identify Patterns In Psychological Data, Skyler Place
Honors Theses
The goal of this project was to utilize the tools of machine learning to evaluate the data obtained through experiments in psychology. Advanced pattern finding algorithms are an effective approach to analyzing large sets of data, from any domain of science. Consequently, we have a psychological question and hypothesis, and a separate machine learning technique to assess these claims. The realm of psychology that I focused on is visual cognition, and how an individual's knowledge affects how they see the world. This alteration of visual data is a part of perception -when the brain enhances the data coming in from …
Pyaguapy Ita: Silencing The Singing Stone: The Impact Of Modern Technology On Indigenous People In Brazil, Caitlin Cassis
Pyaguapy Ita: Silencing The Singing Stone: The Impact Of Modern Technology On Indigenous People In Brazil, Caitlin Cassis
Honors Theses
The name of the world's largest hydroelectric dam, Brazil's Itaipu Binacional, comes from an Ava-Guarani word meaning "singing stone." Before Itaipu became affiliated with dams it represented a smaller, but no less significant monument: a large rock formation in the middle of the Parana River that produced song when struck by water.₂ Today, neither the rock nor the Ava-Guarani tribe remain. In their place is a gargantuan hydroelectric dam that produces sounds more like a thunderous engine than song. When the Brazilian government, in conjunction with Itaipu Binacional officials, constructed the power plant, it not only silenced the singing stone, …
