Histos: The Development And Implementation Of A Biological Lab Program, Robert J. Guizzo

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This project addresses those heretofore limited experiments and laboratory activities associated with a secondary biology course having a core emphasis on human anatomy and physiology. Such a course has been offered at Oakwood High School for nearly two decades. It offers labs to students in two distinct, yet related areas. Anatomy labs provide students with a wide variety of dissectable materials. Whole specimens as well as individual organs are examined and analyzed. In association with lectures, demonstrations, and AV presentations, these labs present a series of unique and critical opportunities in the study of human macroscopic structure. Physiology labs center …

The Development, Implementation, And Evaluation Of The Writer's Procedure For Teaching Dialogue Journal Writing To First Grade Students, Shirley K. Haeuptle

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Students at all levels of literacy benefit when they are actively engaged in blending reading and writing, even from their earliest stages of development. Many elementary classroom teachers focus reading instruction on developing strategic readers. At the same time, these teachers are committed to helping children carefully plan, revise, and publish complete essays. In helping children understand and experience the separate processes of reading and writing, however, we often overlook obvious and natural ways to make the real connection between reading and writing. Students at all levels of literacy development benefit from this reading-writing connection when they actively engage in …

The Development Of A Feature-Based Expert System To Determine Rapid Molding Procedures, Daniel Timothy Harning Jan 1992

The Development Of A Feature-Based Expert System To Determine Rapid Molding Procedures, Daniel Timothy Harning

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The time required to produce tooling needs to be reduced in the product development cycle to bring products to market more quickly. To reduce time, an expert system was developed. The system helps designers marry part designs with manufacturing processes throughout the product development cycle. The expert system can contain a knowledge base of manufacturing technologies in use today. Two manufacturing technologies have been represented in the system. The expert system is feature-based and processes geometry, design, manufacturing, and business issues concerned with part design. These five parts make up the input collector. The expert system consults the knowledge base …

Developing Phonics Knowledge In Whole Language Classrooms, Patricia Ruth Cullen Grogan Jan 1991

Developing Phonics Knowledge In Whole Language Classrooms, Patricia Ruth Cullen Grogan

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Since English is an alphabetic language, educators may agree that children need to develop basic letter/sound relationships (Anderson et al. 1985; Chall 1967, 1983). However, there are common misunderstandings about how much and what kinds of phonics knowledge and instructions are needed (Carbo 1987; Chall 1967, 1983; Genishi & Dyson 1987; Goodman 1986; Heymsfeld 1989; Routman 1988, 1991; Weaver 1988, 1990). Among these are the myths that whole language teachers do not engage in direct instruction and that children in whole language classrooms do not learn phonics (Weaver, 1990).

An Exploratory Evaluation Of The Effects Of Stroop Modulation Upon The Perception Of Relative Frequency, Gabriel Gonsalves-Sosa Jan 1991

An Exploratory Evaluation Of The Effects Of Stroop Modulation Upon The Perception Of Relative Frequency, Gabriel Gonsalves-Sosa

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The effects of congruency, target percentage and target location on judgments of relative frequency were examined. A stimulus consisted of a set of 24 words ("ABOVE"/"BELOW") with asterisks located either on top or underneath the words. The stimulus sets were presented on a computer monitor for 1.50 seconds. Subjects had to judge the frequency of their target (asterisks-above or asterisks-below) at the end of each trial. Forty-eight of the trials were 100% congruent (word and asterisk location with relation to the word indicated same location) and 48 of the trials were 50% congruent and 50% non-congruent. The results indicated that …

The Effects Of Steroid Hormones On Limb Regeneration In Urodele Amphibians, Charles Henry Washabaugh Jan 1991

The Effects Of Steroid Hormones On Limb Regeneration In Urodele Amphibians, Charles Henry Washabaugh

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Limb regeneration in vertebrates is a phenomenon in nature restricted to the urodele amphibians. This complicated process has many facets which are continually being studied using the latest techniques. For these studies, I first concentrated on the potential use of Tariclza gra1lulosa, a native California newt, as a suitable experimental organism and the effects of retinoic acid on its limb regeneration processes. Secondly, I have begun to elucidate the effects of vitamin D metabolites on the regeneration process in the mexican axolotl, Ambystoma mexicallum, and the newt, Notoptlzalmus viridescens. These effects were observed alone and in conjunction with retinoic acid, …
