Robust And Fair Machine Learning Under Distribution Shift, Wei Du May 2022

Robust And Fair Machine Learning Under Distribution Shift, Wei Du

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Machine learning algorithms have been widely used in real world applications. The development of these techniques has brought huge benefits for many AI-related tasks, such as natural language processing, image classification, video analysis, and so forth. In traditional machine learning algorithms, we usually assume that the training data and test data are independently and identically distributed (iid), indicating that the model learned from the training data can be well applied to the test data with good prediction performance. However, this assumption is quite restrictive because the distribution shift can exist from the training data to the test data in many …

Reactionism: The Motivation To Resurrect The Past, Derrick F. Till May 2022

Reactionism: The Motivation To Resurrect The Past, Derrick F. Till

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Subtle long-term societal changes, whether political, economic, or cultural, can be perceived as threats to personal freedoms and cause reactance (Brehm, 1966). Instead of rationalizing and accepting changing societal dynamics, I assert that some people compensate by reframing the past in ways that legitimize and perpetuate the reactant anger: reactionism. Reactance theory is predicated on the perception that the barrier to freedom is not self-inflicted, thus people should not perceive responsibility for the loss of freedom (Brehm, 1966). Additionally, the perception of threat may be driven in part, or at least enhanced, by perceiving others as having access to restricted …

Managing Stress Tolerance On Warm-Season Putting Greens In The Transition Zone, Thomas Edward Walton May 2022

Managing Stress Tolerance On Warm-Season Putting Greens In The Transition Zone, Thomas Edward Walton

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The use of warm-season putting greens in the transition zone has increased in recent years. Ultradwarf bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers x C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy) is the most prevalent warm-season putting green selection in the transition zone, however, newly developed greens-type zoysiagrass (Zoysia spp.) cultivars represent another potential selection for golf courses. The two major limitations of warm-season grasses in the transition zone are a general lack of cold- and shade-tolerance. Protective covers are essential to protect ultradwarf bermudagrass putting greens in the winter months. Unfortunately, golf courses can still experience winterkill underneath protective covers. Two field trials were conducted …
