A Handbook Using Picture Journals In Transitional Kindergarten, Sandy Jo Kessler Heller
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The written language has several different functions in today's society. There is environmental print, occupational print, informational print and recreational print. Students in today's classrooms are learning all about the different aspects of writing and how to express themselves through their writing skills. Only when most children are personally interested in their writing can teachers have the chance to move around and conference with each individual author. At the end of the day, a sharing time usually occurs which permits the authors to share their work with others. Even young students can keep journals, write and share their work with …

Histos: The Development And Implementation Of A Biological Lab Program, Robert J. Guizzo
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This project addresses those heretofore limited experiments and laboratory activities associated with a secondary biology course having a core emphasis on human anatomy and physiology. Such a course has been offered at Oakwood High School for nearly two decades. It offers labs to students in two distinct, yet related areas. Anatomy labs provide students with a wide variety of dissectable materials. Whole specimens as well as individual organs are examined and analyzed. In association with lectures, demonstrations, and AV presentations, these labs present a series of unique and critical opportunities in the study of human macroscopic structure. Physiology labs center …
Using An Electron Beam Launched Orthogonal To The Geomagnetic Field As A Low Frequency Loop Antenna Aboard A Spacecraft In Low Earth Orbit, Ronald Dillon Hackett
Using An Electron Beam Launched Orthogonal To The Geomagnetic Field As A Low Frequency Loop Antenna Aboard A Spacecraft In Low Earth Orbit, Ronald Dillon Hackett
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In conventional electromagnetic theory, the fields of an antenna are computed from the magnitude and phase of currents flowing in a particular geometry where the geometry is defined by some conducting structure. The only effect of the conducting structure is to define the geometry of the system. In the rarified environment of space, it is possible to form current structures without conducting surfaces. The currents are formed from a flow of charged particles (principally electrons) called beams. The shape of the beams can be controlled by using various combinations of electric and magnetic fields. This report examines the antenna properties …

Students at all levels of literacy benefit when they are actively engaged in blending reading and writing, even from their earliest stages of development. Many elementary classroom teachers focus reading instruction on developing strategic readers. At the same time, these teachers are committed to helping children carefully plan, revise, and publish complete essays. In helping children understand and experience the separate processes of reading and writing, however, we often overlook obvious and natural ways to make the real connection between reading and writing. Students at all levels of literacy development benefit from this reading-writing connection when they actively engage in …
Steinbeck, The Critics, And The Narrative Structure Of East Of Eden, Sharon M. Hamant
Steinbeck, The Critics, And The Narrative Structure Of East Of Eden, Sharon M. Hamant
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Several years ago at a flea market, I bought for fifty cents a dilapidated book entitled Steinbeck: A Life in Letters. Until that time, I had little interest in John Steinbeck, although I had a keen interest in reading diaries and letters. As I glanced through the book, I vaguely remembered reading Of Mice and Men in high school, and I'd seen the film version of Grapes of Wrath; that was the extent of my experience with Steinbeck. But my flea market purchase, a book of letters written by Steinbeck to friends, publishers, and other people he was acquainted with, …
The Development Of A Feature-Based Expert System To Determine Rapid Molding Procedures, Daniel Timothy Harning
The Development Of A Feature-Based Expert System To Determine Rapid Molding Procedures, Daniel Timothy Harning
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The time required to produce tooling needs to be reduced in the product development cycle to bring products to market more quickly. To reduce time, an expert system was developed. The system helps designers marry part designs with manufacturing processes throughout the product development cycle. The expert system can contain a knowledge base of manufacturing technologies in use today. Two manufacturing technologies have been represented in the system. The expert system is feature-based and processes geometry, design, manufacturing, and business issues concerned with part design. These five parts make up the input collector. The expert system consults the knowledge base …

Developing Phonics Knowledge In Whole Language Classrooms, Patricia Ruth Cullen Grogan
Developing Phonics Knowledge In Whole Language Classrooms, Patricia Ruth Cullen Grogan
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Since English is an alphabetic language, educators may agree that children need to develop basic letter/sound relationships (Anderson et al. 1985; Chall 1967, 1983). However, there are common misunderstandings about how much and what kinds of phonics knowledge and instructions are needed (Carbo 1987; Chall 1967, 1983; Genishi & Dyson 1987; Goodman 1986; Heymsfeld 1989; Routman 1988, 1991; Weaver 1988, 1990). Among these are the myths that whole language teachers do not engage in direct instruction and that children in whole language classrooms do not learn phonics (Weaver, 1990).
