Efficient Finite Element Modeling Of Wt Sections Subjected To Uniaxial Tension, Ramanand V. Nukala Aug 2001

Efficient Finite Element Modeling Of Wt Sections Subjected To Uniaxial Tension, Ramanand V. Nukala

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Present design specifications for statically loaded tension members do not consider the effects of connection eccentricity as it induces bending in statically loaded members. Previous experimental tests conducted at West Virginia University [WVU] have shown that connection eccentricity induced bending effects have the potential to significantly reduce the net section rupture capacity of a section.;The present study is focused on developing finite element tools capable of capturing the peak loads and behavioral response exhibited is the previous WVU experimental tests. The main objective of the finite element analysis is not only to estimate the failure loads of the WT section …

Real World Heavy-Duty Vehicle Emissions Modeling, Paul Andrei Aug 2001

Real World Heavy-Duty Vehicle Emissions Modeling, Paul Andrei

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Heavy-duty vehicle emissions represent a significant portion of the mobile source emissions inventory. Accurate estimation of their contribution is essential as on-highway and non-road heavy-duty diesel emissions account for at least one third of the oxides of nitrogen (NOx) in the inventory. West Virginia University (WVU) has developed an extensive database of continuous transient gaseous emissions levels from a wide variety of heavy-duty vehicles in field operation. The database was built using WVU Transportable Heavy-Duty Vehicle Emissions Testing Laboratories (THDVETL). Several different transient cycles were utilized for testing including the Central Business District (CBD) schedule.;Several speed correction factors were developed …

Characterization Of Infield Vehicle Activity Data And Exhaust Emissions From Diesel Powered Off-Road Vehicles, Ryan Andrew Barnett

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A study was conducted to determine brake-specific emissions from diesel-powered off-highway heavy equipment that were exercised on steady-state and transient cycles. Two vehicles were evaluated in this study, a streetsweeper (114 hp) and a rubber-tired loader (110 hp). Due to the lack of appropriate transient cycles available for these vehicles, methods were developed to document infield operation for the creation of test cycles and strategies. These cycles were later used to mimic infield operation for the collection of emissions and performance data on a dynamometer test bed.;Brake-specific emissions data collected during the transient cycles was compared to data collected during …

Changes In Stand Structure And Species Diversity Following Clearcutting In Central Appalachian Hardwoods, Mark Benjamin Brashears

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The clearcutting of second-growth Appalachian hardwood forests may cause a reduction in species diversity of the new cohort. This study measured changes in species composition, diversity, and stand structural characteristics following clearcutting of a second-growth hardwood forest. To evaluate the temporal changes in importance of central Appalachian hardwood tree species, thirteen clearcuts on good excellent sites in West Virginia were inventoried before harvesting and 2--26 years after harvesting. Shannon-Weaver's diversity index (H'), Pielou's evenness index (E), and species richness (S) were calculated before and after clearcutting. Species diversity and evenness has decreased, and species richness has remained stable following clearcutting. …

Green-Ampt Infiltration Model Parameter Determination Using Scs Curve Number (Cn) And Soil Texture Class, And Application To The Scs Runoff Model, Elena Viktorovna Brevnova Aug 2001

Green-Ampt Infiltration Model Parameter Determination Using Scs Curve Number (Cn) And Soil Texture Class, And Application To The Scs Runoff Model, Elena Viktorovna Brevnova

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Soil Conservation Service Curve Number (SCS CN) method is a simple and widely popular technique of estimation of direct runoff volume for design and natural rainfall events in small watersheds. The SCS CN procedure is incorporated into such computer programs as TR-20 and TR-55. Although the method reliably predicts 24-hr runoff volume, the predicted distribution of runoff during a storm event is not realistic. This shortcoming of the SCS CN method is due to weakness in the infiltration concept of the method. Use of a physically realistic and distributed Green-Ampt infiltration model can significantly …

Development Of A Micro-Dilution Tunnel System For In-Use, On-Board Heavy-Duty Vehicle Particulate Matter Emissions Measurement, Emily Deanna Cirillo Aug 2001

Development Of A Micro-Dilution Tunnel System For In-Use, On-Board Heavy-Duty Vehicle Particulate Matter Emissions Measurement, Emily Deanna Cirillo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A novel portable particulate matter measuring system was designed, developed and qualified. The heavy-duty engine Federal Test Procedure (FTP) requires the use of a full-flow tunnel to measure particulate emissions from diesel fueled engines. However, a full-flow tunnel based constant volume sampler (CVS) system is not only expensive to build and maintain, it also requires a large work space. The portable micro-dilution system that could be used for measuring on-board, in-use emissions from heavy-duty vehicles would cost significantly less. The micro-dilution tunnel operates on the same principle as a full-flow dilution tunnel. The added advantage of the proposed design is …

Particle-Wall Shear Stress Measurements Within The Standpipe Of A Circulating Fluidized Bed, Angela Marie Sarra Aug 2001

Particle-Wall Shear Stress Measurements Within The Standpipe Of A Circulating Fluidized Bed, Angela Marie Sarra

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Although standpipes are essential to the operation of circulating fluidized bed systems (CFB), their hydrodynamics are poorly understood, and are often unpredictable in displaying effects such as hysteresis which could be due to forces such as particle-wall shear stress.;In this research the one-dimensional gas-solids mixture momentum balance is applied to the standpipe. Neglecting acceleration effects, the important forces are the gas and solids phase pressure drop, weight of the bed, and the particle-wall shear stress. Gas pressure drop is measured using differential pressure transducers. The weight of the bed is assumed constant. The wall shear stress is measured utilizing instruments …

Seasonal Plasticity Of A15 Dopaminergic Neurons In The Ewe, Van Lee Adams Aug 2001

Seasonal Plasticity Of A15 Dopaminergic Neurons In The Ewe, Van Lee Adams

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the ewe, anestrus is caused by increased sensitivity to E2 negative feedback that is mediated by A15 dopaminergic neurons that are only responsive to E2 in anestrus. Experiment 1, tested the hypothesis that synaptic input on A15 neurons varies with season by examining synapsin-positive close contacts on A15 cells using immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy. The number of contacts on dendrites, but not somata, increased during anestrus. There were also corresponding changes in dendritic morphology including an increase in dendritic length, surface area, and number of bifurcations. Because thyroid hormones are necessary for the transition to anestrus, we next examined …

Effect Of Concentrations Of Progesterone On Follicular Development And Fertility In Beef Cows, Jason Brian Candler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The present study was performed to investigate the effects of low ascending concentrations of progesterone on fertility in lactating beef cattle. Cows on the low ascending progesterone treatment received PGF2alpha from days 3 to 4 after estrus. All cows received PGF2alpha on day 9, and estradiol benzoate on day 11. Cows were inseminated artificially 12 hours after estrus. Concentrations of progesterone were lower in treated versus control cows. Pregnancy rate did not differ between treated and control cows. Pregnancy rate was greater in cows that ovulated a follicle from the right (78%) versus left (52%) ovary (p < 0.01). Low ascending progesterone early in the estrous cycle did not decrease fertility to the same extent seen with extended periods of low progesterone.

Synthesis Of Derivatives Of 4h-Cyclopenta[ Def]Phenanthren-4-One And Development Of Synthetic Strategies For The Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons With Carbon Frameworks Represented On The Surface Of C60, Xiaoqing Han

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A derivative of 4H-cyclopenta[def]phenanthren-4-one, 51, was synthesized from the protected ninhydrin 54 and 2 equivalents of 1-(2-ethynylphenyl)-2-phenylethyne. Condensation of the diketone 54 with the lithium acetylide 55 furnished the trans propargylic alcohol 56a and the cis propargylic alcohol 56b. Treatment of 56a with thionyl chloride promoted a sequence of reactions presumably with an initial formation of the chlorinated benzoenyne-allene 58. Two cycles of a C2--C6 biradical cyclization reaction followed by a radical-radical coupling then afforded the formal [4+2] Diels-Alder cycloaddition adduct 60, which in turn underwent tautomerization to give 61. Reduction with tri-n-butyltin hydride then gave the ketal 62 in …

Physiological Study Of Cold Acclimation In Rhododendron Sp. With Emphasis On Role Of Dehydrins, Calin O. Marian

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In this study we established the significance of 25 kDa dehydrin accumulation during cold acclimation (CA) in a wide array of Rhododendron species. These species (24 in total) belong to two diverse subgenera, Hymenanthes and Rhododendron, native to diverse latitudes and altitudes. The dehydrin of interest is highly conserved in Rhododendron genus and was present and up-regulated during CA in all the species studied with one exception---R. brookeanum ---a species adapted to tropics. Some other dehydrins were also found to accumulate in response to cold acclimation in several species, but none of these accumulated consistently. Experimental data show that there …

Green Tea Antioxidants Inhibition Of Oxidation And Mutation, Paul Stout Mcconnell Aug 2001

Green Tea Antioxidants Inhibition Of Oxidation And Mutation, Paul Stout Mcconnell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Green tea is a complex mixture containing several major potent antioxidants e.g., flavins and/or polyphenols. These antioxidants in green tea may react directly or indirectly with strong oxidizers e.g. peroxynitrite or its constituents (superoxide or nitric oxide). Green tea antioxidants can destroy the oxidants. Based on a simple chemical interaction of peroxynitrite (OONO-) and luminol, blue light is produced upon oxidation. It was shown that green tea and constituents have light inhibitory capabilities. In order to show the possible beneficial effects of green tea with DNA, plasmids were chosen to determine whether or not green tea was also capable of …

Integrated Modulation Of Sympathetic Tone In The Microcirculation By Oxygen, Adenosine, And Nitric Oxide, Bryan Auston Sauls Aug 2001

Integrated Modulation Of Sympathetic Tone In The Microcirculation By Oxygen, Adenosine, And Nitric Oxide, Bryan Auston Sauls

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Despite a profound reduction in hemodynamic shear stress, a sustained release of endothelium-derived nitric oxide (NO) limits arteriolar constriction during periods of increased sympathetic nerve activity in the rat small intestine. In this project, we sought to test the hypothesis that adenosine, formed in response to a flow-dependent fall in local PO2, serves as the stimulus to preserve endothelial NO release under these conditions. Sympathetic nerve stimulation induced frequency-dependent arteriolar constrictions and a flow-dependent fall in local PO2. The arteriolar responses to nerve stimulation were enhanced after inhibition of NO synthase with NG-monomethyl-L-arginine (L-NMMA). Under a high (20%) O2 superfusate, …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of the crosslink breaker ALT-711 on the concentration of soluble collagen, as well as its effectiveness on meat tenderness.;Final body weights were not affected by treatments. Muscle tenderness was higher (p < 0.05) for TB, SS, BF, ST, and LT (p < 0.10) for A-maturity animals compared to control and ALT-711 treated animals. No consistent ALT-711 effect on shear force measurements was found. Shear force increased linearly with age BF, R2 = 0.94; SM, R2 = 0.81; LL, R 2 = 0.77; SS, R2 = 0.63; LT, R2 = 0.32; TB, R2 = 0.37; ST, R2 = 0.40. Total collagen content was not different (p > 0.10) between A-maturity, control and ALT-711 treated animals. However, the concentration of soluble collagen was higher (P < 0.05) for A-maturity group. Insoluble collagen content was higher (p < 0.05) for longissimus thoracis, biceps femoris, and (p < 0.10) for supraspinatus of control animals. Muscle soluble collagen content decreased linearly as chronological age increased LT R2 = 0.98; LL R 2 = 0.92; TB R2 = 0.99; BF R2 = 0.99; ST R2 = 0.95; SM R2 = 0.99; SS R2 = 0.36. The soluble collagen percentage was higher for ALT-711 treated animals compared to control animals.;ALT-711 tended to increase muscle soluble collagen content of aged cattle. ALT-711 may be an effective age-related collagen crosslink breaker. However, ALT-711 may not be used to improve meat quality of aged cattle.
