The attrition of fluidized particles and the erosion of in-bed tubes (IBT) cause serious practical problems in operating fluidized bed reactors, particularly in fluidized bed combustion systems (FBC-systems). The Twelve Transcendental Studies Op. 11 for solo piano by Russian composer Sergei Liapunov (1859 -“1924) were written between 1897 and 1905 as a deliberate attempt to finish the key cycle begun by Franz Liszt (1811 - 1886) in his twelve studies of the same title. Whereas Liszt composed his twelve transcendental studies in each of the flat keys, the Liapunov studies are written in the sharp keys, completing the circle of fifths. Hypothesis: There is no statistically significant difference between counts of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, and Bacteroides forsythus, organism morphotypes, and probing depths and plaque scores in orthodontic patients with poor oral hygiene. Thirteen patients were included in the study. Before orthodontic appliances were placed (as baseline) and for four months a BANA test, plaque score, probing depths, and microscopy analysis were performed. Data were analyzed with ANOVA and Tukey HSD. Significant differences were found among patients for the BANA and plaque score. Significant differences were found among visits for the BANA, plaque score, and probing depth. There was an increase …

Currently, knowledge is limited regarding the extent to which: (1) nursing home residents perceive their oral health care as being adequate, (2) nursing home residents’ perceptions and actual oral health status are congruent, and (3) oral health care outcomes and residents’ perceptions of their own oral health care are influenced by levels of physical functioning. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the oral health practices and perceptions of oral health care among cognitively intact nursing home residents. The purpose of this study was to determine if there were any differences in the occurrence of obstructive sleep apnea in patients with teeth and without teeth. Forty middle-aged subjects were screened, 20 were wearers of maxillary and mandibular complete dentures, and 20 were dentate patients. All subjects were screened via five screening tools: the Epworth Sleepiness Scale survey, measurement of neck size, calculated body mass index, and an intraoral exam visualizing the throat and determining the presence or absence of snoring. The study found no statistical difference between the two groups for the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea. However, …

The Gettysburg Formation preserves the sedimentological record of the Late Triassic – Early Jurassic filling of the Newark-Narrow Neck-Gettysburg rift basin and subsequent intrusion by diabase. In the study area, bedrock is exposed only on the floor of the Susquehanna River. This research project is a critique of both electronic media effects and socialization for the largely unstudied sect of Old Order Mennonites from the Weaverland Conference. In an initial pilot study, eight interviews were conducted to obtain reasons for rejection of electronic media. Next, the electronic media studied in this study’s survey analysis included cell phones, computers and attitudes toward the internet. The Middle Magdalena Valley (MMV) basin, Colombia, evolved to its actual configuration through several stages closely linked with the tectonic events of the northwest corner of South America. Early Jurassic extensional deformation related to the break-up of Pangea, resulted in the development of rift structures in the MMV basin area. The syn-rift infill consists of fluvial and lacustrine sedimentary rocks (Jordán, Girón and Santos formations), overlain by limestones and shales (Basal Lime Group). Irregular discontinuous reflectors, rotated by normal faults and increasing thickness towards the south-east, characterize the Jurassic syn-rift section. The Blackwater River, historically an excellent brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) fishery, has been affected by logging, fires, coal mining, acid rain, and land development. Trends in water quality data from 12 sites in the Blackwater River watershed were examined for a 14-year period (1980–1993) using the information-theoretic method and the seasonal Kendall with correlation correction analysis. For most sites (except Beaver Creek), downward trends in acidity and upward trends in alkalinity, conductivity, and hardness were consistent with decreases in hydrogen ion concentration. Dissolved oxygen trended downward possibly due to natural conditions, but remained above biological thresholds. The seasonal Kendall trend …

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of three types of goal setting: performance goals, process goals and no goals, on a racquetball skill task, competitive state anxiety, and goal commitment. Forty college undergraduate students enrolled in racquetball classes were randomly assigned to one of three goal setting groups. Performance and anxiety were evaluated over two competitions conducted over a five week period. The instruments used were the Modified CSAI-2 (Jones & Swain, 1992) for anxiety, the Goal Commitment Questionnaire (Filby et al., 1999) for commitment and a goal manipulation check to measure goal setting changes. The larvae of the Herminiinae are macrodecomposers of forest leaf litter. Eight species were studied to determine the effects of aerially applied Btk. Adults were collected weekly by light trap for 7 consecutive seasons. The first 2 years provided baseline information, followed by 2 years of Btk treatment and 3 post-treatment years. Idia aemula (Hübner)(Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) larvae were collected from control plots and treated with Btk in the laboratory to determine susceptibility. Untreated larvae were reared to adulthood and mated to obtain information on their biology. Differences in light trap counts between years were significant for all 8 species. Forest …

In this study, we develop a new methodology based on the suffix tree data structure to identify unknown targets of gene families. This study evaluates the positive and negative aspects of major American newspaper coverage of the Persian Gulf War in 1991 and the war in Iraq in 2003. Embedded coverage in 2003 was presumed to generate more positive coverage than under the press pool system in 1991. However, both the overall coverage of six newspapers in 1991 and six in 2003 were framed positively toward the American missions. When comparing means of positive and negative coverage among the newspapers, no significant differences in overall coverage were found. The coverage of the Persian Gulf War, however, was slightly more positive. There was …

With modern diesel engines producing smaller and lighter particulate mass output, the performance of in-line filtering, used to determine emissions of particulate matter (PM), has become less understood. Several factors including filter characteristics, filter holder geometry, exhaust dilution, filter face temperature, and secondary dilution characteristics need to be investigated. Scholars such as Jeffrey Segal and Harold Spaeth contend that U.S. Supreme Court decisions are based primarily upon the ideological beliefs of the justices. However, in this work I show that this conclusion is exaggerated. The aggregation of votes into a summary statistic (the percent liberal rating) and its use by Segal and Spaeth in a regression having only 21 cases creates misleading results. The truth is that political ideology is a fluctuating influence upon the Court. In some areas of civil liberties voting, ideology is a poor explanation of how cases are decided (e.g., core political speech). But in …

Most water management studies concentrate on the inter-temporal allocation problem or, more recently, spatial dynamics—but not both. While early spatial-temporal studies focused on the allocation of water quantity, this paper presents an approach to water quality analysis that incorporates both spatial and temporal dynamics in a watershed framework. The model developed is an explicit economic watershed optimization model built upon an underlying water quality model where pollution loads are driven by pollution sources and alternative control strategies. The aim of the current study was to utilize a structural model to examine simultaneously the relationships among socioeconomic status (SES), anxiety sensitivity, stress, psychological problems, Native American identity, cultural related anxiety, and coping. The proposed structural equation model was tested using AMOS (Analysis of Moment Structures). The social stress literature provided a theoretical framework; it suggests that SES-linked social stressors that result in higher levels of psychological disorders adversely affect people from lower SES backgrounds. American eels undergo extensive upstream migration in Atlantic coastal river systems. Few studies, however, have focused on movements of large yellow-phase American eels near dams in upper watersheds of Atlantic coastal rivers. We examined relationships between stream flow, water temperature, and lunar phase, and movements of radio-tagged yellow-phase American eels (518--810 mm TL) near Millville hydroelectric dam in the lower Shenandoah River, West. Movements of yellow-phase American eels differed among seasons. Water temperature and stream flow were associated with upstream migration during spring. Downstream movements during fall corresponded with decreasing water temperatures and darker nights near the new moon. Localized …
