Applied poultry nutrition and feed manufacture science can be described as a “three-legged stool” supported by pellet quality, feed hygienics, and nutrient availability, where imbalance in any one component can compromise overall bird performance. The research presented herein primarily addresses feed hygienics and nutrient availability, with pellet quality serving as an underlying theme, to better understand how processing conditions and dietary formulation influence performance and nutrient utilization.

This dissertation includes three essays examining index option and stock option markets. The first essay investigates the pricing kernel puzzle by examining S&P 500 index option returns and empirical pricing kernels across expiration dates ranging from one month to one year. We document that at short maturities, out-of-the-money call option returns are negative and decrease with the strike price, while at long maturities, at least some are positive and increase with the strike price. Empirical pricing kernels predominantly exhibit a W-shape at short maturities, with this pattern becoming less pronounced and evolving toward a monotonically decreasing curve at longer maturities. …

By examining mid-nineteenth to mid-twentieth century American literary texts, this dissertation project aims to theorize the ways in which whiteness relies on conceptualizations of time to hegemonize non-white subjects and prescribe their historical representations. Because whiteness is dynamic in its emergence and effects and ubiquitous in sociopolitical and cultural realms, this dissertation holistically turns to white, Black, and Indigenous writers to delineate how whiteness functions throughout the period and how racialized subjects negotiate it. Portraying the nation’s history as lived experience rather than objectified knowledge, the racialized authors I examine undermine the concept of linear progressive time that subtends structural …

In this work, we investigate ion heating in two plasma systems (helicon plasmas and flux rope plasmas) using the PHAse Space MApping (PHASMA) experiment. Our studies rely on high-resolution laser diagnostics, specifically laser-induced fluorescence (LIF), to measure ion velocity distribution functions (IVDFs). The temperature and bulk flow of each species are inferred from their respective VDFs. This dissertation is organized into three main parts: the study of ion heating in helicon plasmas, pulsed LIF modeling and diagnostic development, and the study of ion heating in flux rope plasmas. Carbon Capture and sequestration (CCS) is a critical way for the decarbonization of power and industrial sectors. The Tri-State area between West Virgina, Ohio and Pennsylvania are a diverse region with various CO₂ sources, deep saline, depleted reservoirs, pipeline network, and the midstream infrastructure that makes it possible for Captured CO₂ to be safely and economically moved and stored over long periods of time. The advancement of soft robotics requires materials and manufacturing methods that combine large deformation, structural stability, and integrated sensing within a single soft system. Conventional fabrication techniques often limit design flexibility and the incorporation of functional materials into soft structures. This dissertation addresses these challenges through the development of UV-curable and dual-curable silicone elastomers for the direct ink writing (DIW) of soft robotic actuators and embedded sensors.
UV-curable elastomers were first synthesized through thiol-ene click chemistry using poly(mercaptopropylmethylsiloxane) (MMPS) and vinyl-terminated polysiloxane (VPS). ABSTRACT
The Clinton Sandstone of the Appalachian Basin represents a mature hydrocarbon-producing formation with potential for carbon dioxide (CO₂) enhanced oil recovery (EOR). This study develops a compositional reservoir simulation model using the CMG software suite (WinProp, Builder, and GEM) to evaluate the performance of CO₂ injection in improving oil recovery within the Clinton formation.
A three-dimensional reservoir model was constructed using representative geological and petrophysical properties consistent with those of the Clinton Sandstone. Fluid behavior was modeled using a compositional equation-of-state (EOS) approach to accurately capture phase behavior, miscibility development, and CO₂–oil interactions under reservoir conditions. Habitat fragmentation has the potential to isolate localized populations, particularly those which are understood to have limited dispersal capabilities. This isolation can reduce genetic diversity through the effects of inbreeding depression, and small populations are more susceptible to the impacts of genetic drift. In this study, I aim to understand the level of genetic connectivity between known occupied patches of Cheat Mountain salamanders (Plethodon nettingi; CMS) on managed public land. Invasive plants alter forest ecosystems by reducing species richness, habitat heterogeneity, and nutrient cycling as they rapidly displace native plants. Invasive plant composition can influence soil health through altering soil microbial associations and communities. By studying the mechanisms in which invasives alter above- and below-ground communities, we can better understand whole-ecosystem impacts and inform management decisions. Flow regime identification in co-current upward gas-liquid flow through annular conduits remains a significant challenge in petroleum engineering, with major safety and operational implications. It is also important across industries involving the transport of multiphase fluids. This dissertation presents the author’s recent research, conducted under the supervision of Professor Olgur Celikbas, and based on two articles—one published and one in progress. These works develop two closely related research directions in commutative algebra. Together, they contribute to the subject by addressing aspects of existing conjectures, establishing new results, and introducing methods for studying homological invariants.

The increasing stringency of emissions regulations for heavy-duty (HD) diesel engines necessitates the development of accurate, efficient, and general predictive models for engine-out emissions under steady-state operating conditions. Traditional statistical approaches, while computationally efficient, often fail to capture the inherent nonlinear relationships between the engine operating parameters and emissions formation. In contrast, machine learning (ML) techniques offer a promising alternative by learning the complex patterns directly from experimental data. The present thesis summarizes a comprehensive study on the prediction of steady-state, HD diesel engine emissions using ML models, along with a comparative analysis against conventional statistical modeling approaches.

This work investigates microwave-assisted calcination as a rapid, energy-efficient alternative to conventional resistive heating for the synthesis of complex oxide powders used in solid oxide electrochemical cells. Ce₀.₉Gd₀.₁O₁.₉₅ (GDC10) and La₀.₆Sr₀.₄Co₀.₂Fe₀.₈O₃–δ (LSCF6428) were synthesized via solid-state and co-precipitation routes to evaluate the influence of precursor chemistry and dielectric behavior on microwave coupling, reaction kinetics, and powder characteristics. Calcination was performed in single-mode and multimode microwave systems using a silicon carbide/alumina susceptor–insulation package to ensure controlled high-temperature processing. Biological carbon sequestration provides a way to integrate carbon initiatives while meeting sustainable forestry management needs. In the United States, woody plants capture about 13% of annual carbon emissions, highlighting the importance of forests and other ecosystems in national climate strategies.With over 640 million acres of public land, management strategies that incorporate carbon sequestration could significantly influence national carbon storage. Because public lands are taxpayer-funded, public acceptance is critical in carbon-focused policies. Consumer complaint behavior research has traditionally focused on interactions between customers and human employees, leaving open questions about how these behaviors may change when the service agent is artificial intelligence. This research looks at whether customers are more likely to engage in opportunistic complaint behavior when interacting with AI service agents and explores what might explain that behavior. The results show that customers are more likely to behave opportunistically when interacting with AI service agents than with human employees. international media outlets discursively represent them through Western journalistic norms.

This study examines how Bangladeshi international graduate students at West Virginia University experience, interpret, and utilize written formative feedback within higher education in the United States. It explores how students' prior educational and cultural experiences in Bangladesh shape their engagement with feedback in a different academic context. Caregivers of traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivors experience caregiver burden, which is a prevalent issue. The most significant concern is for symptoms of burden affecting mental health and sleep quality. This doctoral capstone project addressed the knowledge gap regarding programs that alleviate these signs and symptoms through evidence-based interventions. The coupling of a variational wave equation with Maxwell’s equations gives rise to the optical variational wave system, a hyperbolic PDE system that models the director field of the nematic liquid crystals. The first essay estimates bias in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for elderly individuals in the United States using Engel curve methodology and household-level data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (1999–2023). The analysis focuses on how well the CPI reflects changes in the cost of living for older Americans, with particular attention to differences by gender and marital status. Results show that from 1999–2011, the CPI overstated the increase in the cost of living for both elderly and non-elderly households. In contrast, from 1999–2023, the CPI understated cost increases, with the bias generally larger for non-elderly households. Within …
