Evaluating Real-World Idle Emissions From Heavy-Duty Diesel Vehicles, Abm Siddiqur Rahman Khan
Evaluating Real-World Idle Emissions From Heavy-Duty Diesel Vehicles, Abm Siddiqur Rahman Khan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Long haul trucks in the USA idle for extended periods at truck stops and at pickup and drop-off points. The idling consumes fuel, contributes to engine wear and reduces atmospheric quality, but it cannot simply be proscribed because in many cases cab heat or air-conditioning provides essential driver comfort. As an example, there are nearly 1.5 million interstate trucks that operate in California, where climate control is essential. A comprehensive tailpipe emissions database to describe idling impacts is not available at present, although studies have been conducted to quantify idle emissions and to project the advantages of idle reduction technologies …

This study compared and evaluated the conduct of US policies towards North Korea in order to address the North Korean nuclear threat under the Clinton (1993--2000) and the Bush (2001--2004) administrations. The capabilities of the two administrations to carry out their preferred policies toward the global threat were evaluated in view of the systemic and domestic constraints that they faced. Domestic constraints identified were the US Congress, American political culture and public opinion and bureaucratic problems. Systemic constraints were the lack of coordination and differences in policy frameworks of South Korea, Japan, China and Russia, and the difficulty of dealing …
Evaluation Of Surface Mechanical Properties Of Pot Hardware Materials In Continuous Galvanizing Lines, Anand Krishnaswamy
Evaluation Of Surface Mechanical Properties Of Pot Hardware Materials In Continuous Galvanizing Lines, Anand Krishnaswamy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Pot hardware in continuous galvanizing lines is subjected to harsh and corrosive environment. The application of pot hardware in such conditions can cause surface degradation of the pot hardware materials thereby decreasing their life. The surface degradation can be due to wear, decrease in hardness or change in surface elastic modulus. The 500-lb lab scale test set-up at WVU was used to simulate the conditions existing in the actual continuous galvanizing line.;Ultrasonic equipment has gained immense importance in the field of non-destructive testing. One such instrument that measures surface hardness based on the shift of an ultrasonic frequency was used …

Identification Of Athd2c As A Novel Regulator Of Aba Signaling In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Sunandini Sridhar
Identification Of Athd2c As A Novel Regulator Of Aba Signaling In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Sunandini Sridhar
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This report describes AtHD2C as a regulator of the ABA controlled events. AtHD2C is a member of the HD2-type histone deacetylase family. Results indicated an overall physiological significance for the HD2 proteins as well as a possible involvement in embryo development. In continuum with this, seeds overexpressing AtHD2C were insensitive to ABA, NaCl and mannitol at germination. This phenotype was supported by ABA-responsive gene expression patterns in the transgenic plants that implicated a negative role for AtHD2C in ABA response regulation in this developmental window. Additionally, the AtHD2C transcript accumulation was down-regulated by ABA that was reflected by the down-regulation …

An Attack-Resistant Approach To Vulnerability Scanner Design., David Phillip Shaver
An Attack-Resistant Approach To Vulnerability Scanner Design., David Phillip Shaver
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Vulnerability scanners are used to scan and detect known vulnerabilities in computer systems. An attacker can exploit these vulnerabilities to compromise the security of a system and potentially cause harm. Thus, it is vital to detect and repair any vulnerabilities that exist. Vulnerability scanners, however, are themselves susceptible to attack. If an attacker were to compromise a scanner, they could force it ignore the vulnerabilities of other systems. They could then compromise these other computers by exploiting the undetected vulnerabilities. Due to the importance of preventing such false positives in scan results, this research proposes a new approach to vulnerability …
Political Economy Of Railway Extensions In Kenya: The Case Of The Uasin Gishu Railway 1901-1930, John Mwaniki Mwaruvie

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The history of the construction of the Uasin Gishu railway demonstrates the complexity of formulating and implementing a colonial development project. It involved an array of actors with divergent interests. As result, the project became the most controversial railway extension in Kenya, which some critics have called a "colonial scandal." The main areas of controversy involved the altering of the original route for the Kisumu to Mumias railway, which was meant to serve the most productive African district in favor of a line starting from Nakuru via Uasin Gishu to Mumias to cater for the interests of European settlers who …
Multi-Heuristic Theory Assessment With Iterative Selection, Kareem Ammar
Multi-Heuristic Theory Assessment With Iterative Selection, Kareem Ammar
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Modern day machine learning is not without its shortcomings. To start with, the heuristic accuracy, which is the standard assessment criteria for machine learning, is not always the best heuristic to gauge the performance of machine learners. Also machine learners many times produce theories that are unintelligible by people and must be assessed as automated classifiers through machines. Theses theories are either too large or not properly formatted for human interpretation. Furthermore, our studies have identified that most of the data sets we have encountered are satiated with worthless data that actually leads to the degradation of the accuracy of …

Software Risk Assessment Based On Uml Models, Kalaivani Appukkutty
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Risk is the possibility of suffering loss. Risks identified during the early stages of software development are easier and cheaper to handle by making changes to the software architecture. This thesis presents methodologies to assess software risk using Unified Modeling Language (UML) specifications of the software from the early design stages. We present methodologies to assess two types of software risk: Requirements-based risk and Performance-based risk. In assessing requirements-based risk, each requirement is mapped to a specific operational scenario in UML. The risk factor of a scenario in a failure mode is obtained by combining the probability of failure of …

Road building was shown statistically to have a positive influence on the location of landslides. Slope aspect, slope angles, and elevation were also shown to have strong relationships with landslide initiations.;A landslide initiation risk map was created by overlaying the physical and geological factors favorable for landslide initiation. The risk map outlines …
Exposures To Silica And Inducers Of Xenobiotic Metabolism In The Rat Lung, Lori A. Battelli
Exposures To Silica And Inducers Of Xenobiotic Metabolism In The Rat Lung, Lori A. Battelli
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
CYP1A1 metabolizes polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), such as those in cigarettes, to reactive intermediates which interact with DNA and lead to cancer. Silica is a lung carcinogen. Epidemiology studies of silica and lung cancer are not all positive. A possible explanation for these inconsistencies may be that silica is a modifier of PAH metabolism and, thus, cigarette smoke carcinogenesis. We hypothesize that crystalline silica exposure alters CYP1A1 expression, thereby modifying lung cancer risk. Rats exposed to both crystalline silica and the model PAH, beta-naphthoflavone (NF), a CYP1A1 inducer have significantly decreased CYP1A1 enzymatic activity and CYP1A1 protein expression. In the …

Three Essays On Public Economics And Public Finance, Yousam Choi
Three Essays On Public Economics And Public Finance, Yousam Choi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In the first essay, we examine the conditions under which the regulatory process leads to collusion, and if there is collusion, whether it will be observed in the political or bureaucratic sector. The political cost disciplines the politician, while monitoring intensity limits the bureaucrat's discretion. According to our model, high political pressure is critical to achieve a state with no collusion between agents. If the political cost is relatively small, higher penalties on the bureaucrat will just open the possibility of political corruption. In a politician's initiative regime, if the transfer offered to the politician in exchange for legislative effort …
