Interpretive Theme Development From First Impressions And Visitor Center Evaluations At The Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area, West Virginia., Karissa A. Decarlo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The typical visitor to the Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area (NRA), within the Monongahela National Forest, WV, is 2 out of 3 times most likely a first time visitor (Siniscalchi, Pierskalla, and Selin, 2003). The NRA anticipates an additional increase of new visitors upon completion of Corridor H, a highway that will link the District of Columbia-metro area to tourism offerings of the NRA. The purpose of this study is to compare first time and repeat visitors’ first impressions of the Spruce-Knob Seneca Rocks NRA in order to develop interpretive themes that will highlight the offerings of the NRA. …
Art Interpretation: Constructing Meaning Through Poetic And Non-Verbal Responses., Lori A. Mcpherson
Art Interpretation: Constructing Meaning Through Poetic And Non-Verbal Responses., Lori A. Mcpherson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Critical inquiry and personal response models with regard to art interpretation are composed of many forms of activities and response exercises that are both poetic and non-verbal. Students have been responding to art using critical inquiry, but there has been relatively nothing written in regard to poetic expression and non-verbal responding in the teaching of art interpretation. This project will discuss how a poetic model (the use of figurative language to form ideas about constructing personal meaning in a work of art) and a non-verbal model (creating a visual response to exemplify meaning) work together in the construction of meaning. …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research is an investigation of how remote sensing can be used to supplement traditional methods of corridor management planning. Cultural resource inventory for corridor and interpretive management practices is an important component of applications for the designation of a selected route as Scenic Historic American Byways through the National Scenic Byways Program. A case study of a section of the National Road near Wheeling, West Virginia, showed that contemporary and historic aerial photography can facilitate the identification of possible impacts on a route’s historic integrity. A previously designated historic route, the National Road was America’s first federally funded interstate …
Russia And Chechnya: The Path To War., Jason A. Roberts
Russia And Chechnya: The Path To War., Jason A. Roberts
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis examines the causes of the 1994-1996 Chechen War by analyzing the policies of the Russian and Chechen governments between 1991 and 1994. The development of Chechen separatism in the late 1980s and the creation of a secessionist Chechen government in 1990-1991 are extensively examined. Through the use of Russian and Chechen government documents as well as contemporary reports in the Russian press, I present in detail the negotiation process between Moscow and Grozny in 1992-1994 and I examine why these negotiations failed to reach a peaceful settlement. Ultimately, I argue that the 1994-1996 Chechen War resulted from Moscow’s …
A History Of The Letcher Guards And The Twenty-Fifth Virginia Infantry Regiment., Walter Rohrbacher
A History Of The Letcher Guards And The Twenty-Fifth Virginia Infantry Regiment., Walter Rohrbacher
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The American Civil War was the only fratricidal conflict in this country’s history. Families, former friends, and neighbors opposed each other with a passion and zeal never seen before or since. Nowhere was this tragedy more evident than in what is now West Virginia. Much of north central West Virginia opposed secession. Many of these counties supported remaining in the Union. Most of these counties, however, did give some support to the Confederacy. This support was usually in the form of volunteer companies sent off to war. Taylor County was one such county. The company that came out of Taylor …
"Islam Is The Blackman's Religion": Syncretizing Islam With Black Nationalist Thought To Fulfill The Religio-Political Agenda Of The Nation Of Islam., Sultana Rahim-Barakzoy
"Islam Is The Blackman's Religion": Syncretizing Islam With Black Nationalist Thought To Fulfill The Religio-Political Agenda Of The Nation Of Islam., Sultana Rahim-Barakzoy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study intends to examine the efforts of the Nation of Islam, via its founder the "Messenger," Elijah Muhammad, in syncretizing Islamic tenets with black nationalist thought to further the religio-political agenda of the organization. Strongly influenced by Marcus Garvey's "Back to Africa" movement, the Nation of Islam coupled Garvey's political nationalism with the nationalist "Islamism" of the Moorish Science Temple movement to form its own immutable religio-political platform. The religion of Islam not only gave the black Moslems a firm religious identity, but it also represented a medium by which black Moslems could express their own originality and creativity …
"Old England In Perfection": Historical Arguments In The Jewish Naturalization Controversy Of 1753., Philip J. Hnatkovich
"Old England In Perfection": Historical Arguments In The Jewish Naturalization Controversy Of 1753., Philip J. Hnatkovich
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study explores the role of historical arguments in the pamphlets of the Jewish Naturalization Controversy of 1753. Arguments made from the basis of medieval English history were among the most common in the controversy and they are key to explaining not only the origins and outcome of the Jew Bill episode, but also the underlying religious and political assumptions of the eighteenth-century English political nation. An examination of these pamphlets suggests that the conflict was due to latent antisemitism and a distinctive form of political identity, both of which were inextricably connected with Constitutionalist traditions of history and law. …
Gallium Nitride Growth By Rf-Plasma Assisted Molecular Bean Epitaxy: Determination Of Surface Stoichiometry By Rheed-Traxs, Annealing Of Gallium Nitride:Beryllium And The Effects Of Active Nitrogen Species, Surface Polarity, And Excess Gallium-Overpressure On High Temperature Limits., Brenda Vanmil
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Growth of GaN by molecular beam epitaxy is ultimately limited by thermal decomposition. Factors influencing thermal decomposition are growth species (atomic versus metastable molecular nitrogen), surface polarity (N- vs. Ga-polar), the presence of atomic hydrogen and varying Ga-overpressure. Surface polarity and growth species are the predominant influence determining the onset of thermal decomposition. Decomposition for Ga-stable Ga-polar and N-polar growth both have the same activation energy as that observed for thermal decomposition of GaN in vacuum even though N-polar growth exhibits a significant decrease in thermal decomposition rate. Decomposition may be rate-limited by desorption of surface-adsorbed Ga. Improvement in electrical …

The Monyton Diaspora: A History Of The Middle Ohio River Valley, 1640-1700., Isaac J. Emrick
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
During the seventeenth century a vibrant group of Native Americans, the Monytons, controlled southern West Virginia and northeastern Kentucky. The effects of contact with Europeans destabilized their societies as far inland as the Ohio Valley. This began the process which eventually pushed most Monytons from the region. The Five Nations Iroquois, pressured by social changes farther north, attacked the Monytons further drawing people out of the Ohio Valley. A growing southern Indian slave trade also contributed to the decay of Monyton dominance in the region. A central point in this thesis is that Monytons formed and reformed traditions to deal …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Osteoarthritis is a type of arthritis marked by degeneration of the cartilage and bone in joints, which causes severe joint pain associated with daily activities. Articular cartilage is one of the major load bearing tissue that transfers load across joints and with synovial fluid provides a bearing surface for the diarthrodial joints. It is made up of highly specialized cells called chondrocytes that are responsible for its growth and maintenance. Mechanical loading and cell-matrix interactions have been shown experimentally to influence the biological behavior of chondrocytes. Biological behavior of the chondrocytes is important because they are highly associative with the …

Arylhydrazine Carcinogenesis And The Synthesis Of C8-Arylpurine Oligonucleotides: A Study Of Dna Adduct Effects On Dna Conformation And Stability., Jonathan R. Daft
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Agaricus bisporus mushrooms have been shown to be carcinogenic due to their arylhydrazine content, but the mechanism of the carcinogenesis has not been elucidated. Clues into the mechanism have been discovered in the metabolism of the arylhydrazines to arenediazonium ions and aryl radicals. Both of these compounds form DNA adducts, which may be relevant to carcinogenesis. Arenediazonium ions have been shown to activate signal transduction proteins associated with DNA damage and apoptosis. Previously, our group had shown that arenediazonium ions activate the apoptotic protein AP1. The activation of AP1 has been correlated to aryl radial generation, since the AP1 activation …
Para-Verbal Avoidance During Public Speaking: The Relationship Between Self -Disclosure And Social Anxiety., Michael F. Detweiler
Para-Verbal Avoidance During Public Speaking: The Relationship Between Self -Disclosure And Social Anxiety., Michael F. Detweiler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Unlike dyadic conversation where the social burden of conversation can be shared, the quantity and quality of speech produced during a public speaking challenge is primarily dependent upon the speaker. This study examined whether differences in disclosure patterns reflect a form of subtle avoidance during public speaking challenges. Termed para-verbal avoidance, it was hypothesized individuals with increased anxiety would refrain from talking about themselves for fear of revealing potentially embarrassing personal information. Also, it was proposed individuals with increased anxiety would avoid discussing subjective information, as it can be debated by others and used as the basis for forming a …

Aterf4 And Aterf7 Are Involved In The Abscisic Acid Signaling Response In Arabidopsis., Zhen Yang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
ERFs (ethylene-responsive element binding factors) belong to a large family of transcription factors that are found exclusively in plants. A small subfamily of ERF proteins can act as transcriptional repressors. The Arabidopsis genome contains eight ERF repressors, namely AtERF3, AtERF4, AtERF7, AtERF8, AtERF9, AtERF10, AtERF11, and AtERF12. The different ERF repressors show differential expression, suggesting that they may have different function. The expression of AtERF4 can be induced by ethylene, jasmonic acid, or abscisic acid. AtERF7 can be induced by abscisic acid only. Using a transient expression system, we demonstrated that AtERF4 and AtERF7 can function as transcriptional repressors. By …

Development Of A Transparent Indenter Measurement System And Indentation Analysis For Material Mechanical Property Evaluation, Chuanyu Feng
Development Of A Transparent Indenter Measurement System And Indentation Analysis For Material Mechanical Property Evaluation, Chuanyu Feng
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Since Tabor showed the application of the spherical indentation approach to obtain material post-yielding true stress-strain curves, the indentation technique has been investigated to determine mechanical properties besides hardness measurement. With the development of various thin film materials, depth-sensing indentation is often applied to evaluate mechanical properties of thin film materials. However, indentation testing is a complicated mechanical process and analytical solutions are difficult to obtain. As a result, much of the understanding of the indentation process has been acquired through experiments and finite element simulations. Thus accurate measurement of indentation parameters is critical in the determination of surface mechanical …

Heat Shock Protein 70 As An Indicator Of Toxic Heavy Metal Exposure And Oxidative Stress In The Serum Of Asymptomatic Shipyard Welders, Sung Gu Han
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) expression has been reported to be a sensitive biomarker of cell stress. Arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), vanadium (V), and manganese (Mn) are widely used and exposure to these metals is associated with the development of pulmonary disease. Our data showed that exposure to these metals resulted in a significant increase in cytotoxicity, apoptosis, and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in a human bronchial cell line, BEAS-2B. However, increased Hsp70 expression was observed only in cells exposed to As, Cd, and Hg. To correlate changes associated with Hsp70 overexpression, …
Graph Algorithms For The Haplotyping Problem, Yunkai Liu
Graph Algorithms For The Haplotyping Problem, Yunkai Liu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Evidence from investigations of genetic differences among human beings shows that genetic diseases are often the results of genetic mutations. The most common form of these mutations is single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP). A complete map of all SNPs in the human genome will be extremely valuable for studying the relationships between specific haplotypes and specific genetic diseases. Some recent discoveries show that the DNA sequence of human beings can be partitioned into long blocks where genetic recombination has been rare. Then, inferring both haplotypes from chromosome sequences is a biologically meaningful research topic, which has compounded mathematical and computational problems.;We …
