Psychosocial Moderators In The Relation Between Cd4 Count And Physical Symptoms Among African American Women With Hiv, Cara F. O'Connell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The current study examined the link between immune functioning (CD4 count) and physical symptoms, as well as the moderating role of optimism and depressive symptoms, in a sample of 99 low income, inner city African American women with HIV. Although there was no main effect of CD4 count on physical symptoms, depressive symptoms moderated the association between CD4 count and physical symptoms. More compromised immune functioning (lower CD4 count) was associated with more physical symptoms under conditions of higher levels of depressive symptoms, but not lower levels of depressive symptoms. This finding was observed using both a self-report measure and …

Evaluation Of The Transverse Load Capacity Of Block Stoppings For Mine Ventilation Control, Thomas M. Barczak
Evaluation Of The Transverse Load Capacity Of Block Stoppings For Mine Ventilation Control, Thomas M. Barczak
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The transverse loading requirement for stoppings as specified in the current Code of Federal Regulations is 39 psf. This measure is based on physical testing of a freestanding wall in accordance with ASTM E 72 specifications, where the dominant parameter is the tensile strength of the sealant. A new protocol based on arching has been developed to determine the true transverse load capacity of stoppings. Arching is achieved by the restraint of the stopping against the mine roof and floor, whereby compressive forces are developed within the wall. A laboratory procedure using the NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) to simulate …

Temporal Trends In Consumption, Growth, And Successful Feeding Traits Of A Central Appalachian Brook Trout Population At The Watershed Scale, Ryan Michael Utz
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) in Appalachia frequently experience limitations in food availability. In order to determine temporal variation in consumption, successful feeding, and corresponding population patterns and growth, the feeding dynamics of a population of brook trout were monitored throughout a headwater watershed over the course of two years. The Middle Fork River brook trout experienced food limitation throughout summer and fall, however, mean consumption estimates fell below maintenance ration only during the winter seasons. Consumption estimates were significantly related to watershed position, as fish in low density, downstream reaches consistently consumed significantly more energy than fish upstream during warm …
Synthesis Of Novel Alkaloids Using Squaric Acid Esters, Peter S. Zehr
Synthesis Of Novel Alkaloids Using Squaric Acid Esters, Peter S. Zehr
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A novel route to cyclopenta[b]quinoline-1-ones and -ols has been developed. Substituted cyclopenta[b]quinolin-1-ones were prepared by thermal ring-expansion of substituted N-BOC protected 4-(2-aminophenylethynyl)-4-hydroxy-2-cyclobuten-1-ones forming the corresponding 2-aminophenylmethylidene substituted 4-cyclopentene-1,3-diones. Deprotection of the amine resulted in spontaneous condensation to give cyclopenta[b]quinolin-1-ones. Sodium borohydride reduction of these products produced cyclopenta[b]quinolin-1-ols. The key step in the sequence is a thermally induced ring-expansion of 4-(2-aminophenylethynyl)-4-hydroxy-2-cyclobuten-1-ones. Changing the amino protecting group had no effect on the ring size selectivity of the thermal ring expansion. The thermal ring expansion of the corresponding nitro derivative suggests that electron withdrawing substituents may alter the selectivity of the ring formation. …
Three Essays On Migration: Its Interaction With Regional Wage Differentials And Occupational Choice And Its Application In Different Discrete Choice Models, Christiadi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation consists of three essays that examine two important roles of migration, promoting regional wage convergence and increasing economic efficiency. The first essay is a survey of the migration and migration-related literatures, examining why migration and regional wage differentials can co-exist over time. The direct reason is that the classical assumptions leading to regional wage convergence are rarely fully applicable in the real world. This essay reveals various real-world conditions violating those assumptions and explains how they can either create or magnify regional wage differentials. The essay also reveals how the difficulty in distinguishing wage differentials from true wage …
Production Of Conjunctions And T-Units By The Elderly, Benjamin Haymond
Production Of Conjunctions And T-Units By The Elderly, Benjamin Haymond
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Recent research indicates a change in healthy elderly adult language capabilities. More specifically, Shadden (1997) and Ryan (1996) state that language competence is less affected by the processes of aging than production. The topic of this research examined specifically the production of conjunctions from the perspective of Halliday and Hasan (1976) in procedural and narrative discourse by the elderly. The hypothesis stated that the relationship between age and conjunctions produced would be non-significant. In a cross-sectional study, 17 subjects between the ages of 60-86 were interviewed and the transcripts analyzed.;Results supported the hypothesis of a non-significant relationship between age and …

The Influence Of Humanism On The Handwriting Of Michelangelo Buonarroti, Robert J. Tallaksen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The handwriting of Michelangelo Buonarroti underwent a distinct and permanent change between 1497 and 1502. The handwriting of his early letters of 1496 and 1497 is merchantescha, the gothic cursive mercantile script which he would have learned at school. The later handwriting is cancellarescha, a humanistic cursive. It is present in letters, contracts, memoranda, records of accounts, and in annotations on drawings. Both scripts as written by Michelangelo are analyzed paleographically and are compared to examples from instructional writing books of the period. The impossibility of evolution from one script to the other is demonstrated through analysis of the scripts …

The Impact Of Points Of Impasse On Conflict Escalation During The Special Education Conflict Resolution Process, Deedra Jane Lundeen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Current literature reveals the disparity between the knowledge that strong parent-school partnerships are integral to planning and implementing educational programming for exceptional children, and the ability of parents and school personnel to identify and deescalate conflict when it occurs. Several studies acknowledged variables that helped build and maintain strong parent-school collaboration, and identified factors that escalated or de-escalated parent conflict. However, the research is sparse regarding factors that impact points of impasse on conflict escalation between parents and school districts during the special education conflict resolution process. Such information could provide stakeholders with deeper insight into the dynamic aspects of …

Assessing The Effectiveness Of Descriptive And Experimental Analyses To Identify Variables Influencing Problem Behavior In Domestic Dogs, Susan D. Kapla
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Problem behavior in dogs is a concern for pet owners. Many contemporary approaches to intervention first involve a process of diagnosis and classification which is often structural in nature. An accurate diagnosis is considered essential for effective treatment, however, outcome data validating the efficacy of this procedure are dubious. The success of strategies used to assess and treat behavior problems that identify behavioral function in humans (functional assessment), however, suggests the potential utility of such techniques in the assessment and treatment of behavior problems in dogs. Therefore, two separate assessments were conducted to identify and manipulate variables affecting problem behavior …
