Iqgap1 Knockdown Enhances The Endothelial Barrier In Vitro, Wentao Zhang
Iqgap1 Knockdown Enhances The Endothelial Barrier In Vitro, Wentao Zhang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
IQGAP1 overexpression inhibits E-cadherin-mediated epithelial cell-cell adhesion by distabilizing the adherens junctions, and activated Rac1 and Cdc42 may prevent these effects by removing IQGAP1 from the adherens junction complex. In the present study, we determined if IQGAP1 associates with the adherens junction of endothelial cells and affects endothelial barrier function. In human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), IQGAP1 associated with VE-cadherin, the catenins, beta, gamma, alpha, and p120, but not with N-cadherin or the tight junction proteins, occludin, claudin-5, and ZO-1. Detergent extracted most of the IQGAP1 associated with VE-cadherin. Treatment of endothelial cells with sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), which increases the …
Synthesis Of Novel Polycyclic Aromatics And Heteroaromatics Via Cascade Cyclizations Of Enyne-Allenes And Enyne-Isocyanates, Hua Yang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Studies on the thermal cyclization of enyne-isocyanates led to a new synthetic pathway to synthesize heterocycles. It was found that the enyne-isocyanates underwent predominantly C2--C7 cyclization at high temperature and the cycloaromatization was facilitated by the addition of silyl chloride.;The C2--C6 Schmittel cyclization of benzannulated enyne-allenes can provide efficient synthetic pathway for the polycyclic aromatics. As a result, new synthetic pathways to synthesize the 1,2-bis[5-(11 H-benzo[b]fluorenyl)]benzenes and related compounds were developed by employing the Schmittel cyclization reaction. The nonbonded steric interaction led to the formation of syn-isomers as major products, which hold potential to complex with transition metals to catalyze …

An Economic Analysis Of Food Stamp Participation In West Virginia, Ahadu T. Tekle
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Poverty and food insecurity are challenging socio-economic problems that policy makers are trying to address for a long time. Among other things, providing financial and in-kind assistance are some of the initiatives taken to improve food security for low income households. Food Stamp Program is an important assistance program that serves to meet this goal. The objective of this study is to examine the implication of economic and policy variables on food stamp participation in West Virginia. To understand the current and lagged impact of economic variables on current food stamp participation, static and dynamic econometric models are used. These …
Development Of A Small Separation Riser For Fine Coal Particles, Haroon Akhtar
Development Of A Small Separation Riser For Fine Coal Particles, Haroon Akhtar
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The wet, density based, separation processes employed at the coal preparation plant do not deal with particles under the size of 150 micrometers, resulting in the waste of precious coal resources. An exploratory fluidized bed riser system was developed to separate pyrite from fine coal particles under 150 micrometers in diameter. Gas velocity U0 and solid mass flux G p were the controlled variables so that the flow pattern within the riser was in the transition region from fast fluidization to dilute regime. Nine tests were conducted using coal and nine tests were conducted using a mixture of 10% iron …
Some New Methods For Image Compression, Muhammad Aslam
Some New Methods For Image Compression, Muhammad Aslam
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The vanishing moment of wavelets and associated multi-resolution framework yield an efficient representation of smooth functions with wavelet approximation. However as pointed out in many papers, the similar result cannot be expected for the piecewise smooth functions with large jumps. In other words, wavelet approximation cannot achieve the same approximation order in the vicinity of jumps as in the smooth regions. Large wavelet coefficients associated with jumps are generated and consequently produce oscillations near discontinuities in the reconstructed signal. This is the so-called Gibbs phenomenon or a Ringing effect. In this thesis, we develop a technique which reduces the Gibbs …
Comparison Between Human Perception Of Risk Of Injury And Niosh Wpg For Lifting Tasks, Viviana Carolina Baggio
Comparison Between Human Perception Of Risk Of Injury And Niosh Wpg For Lifting Tasks, Viviana Carolina Baggio
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Low back injuries are highly prevalent in industry, recreational environs and in work at home. It is believed that humans are not able to judge the biomechanical risk of injury inherent with performing lifting tasks. This experiment studies the impact of lifting geometry (e.g., the horizontal, vertical and travel distances of a lift), frequency, gender and age upon an observer's perception of injury risk when looking at a task before attempting a lift. Subjects completed a questionnaire with a series of 54 pictures showing different lifting tasks; subjects then ranked their perceived risk of injury on a scale of 0 …
The Effects Of Residual Trees On Regeneration Dynamics Following A Diameter Limit Harvest, Travis J. Deluca
The Effects Of Residual Trees On Regeneration Dynamics Following A Diameter Limit Harvest, Travis J. Deluca
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Ten years after diameter-limit cutting, shading from residual trees had a negative effect on regeneration growth in three Appalachian hardwood stands. Regardless of shade tolerance, saplings growing outside the crown shading of residual overstory trees had higher densities and were taller and larger in diameter. Most shade-intolerant and mid-tolerant species decreased in total height and diameter as overstory basal area increased. Black cherry height (p<0.0001) and diameter (p=0.0002) had a significant negative relationship with increasing overstory basal area. Total height of shade-tolerant species was not affected and diameter showed a positive relationship. Red maple diameter had a significant positive relationship (p<0.0001) with increasing overstory basal area. Rehabilitation of stands after diameter-limit cutting requires silvicultural release operations to reduce competition in the new cohort.

Process Costing Of Microchip, Dipesh Gajera
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The CMOS microchip is the workhorse of the semiconductor industry. An estimated price of a CMOS chip for an 8" wafer was stated as {dollar}1.65/chip (65). The manufacturing model was formed with practical processing times, number of machines, steps of manufacturing process, labor required, construction costs, land costs, etc as input parameters. This cost model attempts to analyze costs and calculate the cost per chip. Different sections of costs have been individually analyzed in turn to reflect their impact on the finished product. A simulation model has been run to reflect an actual semiconductor manufacturing scenario. Simulation model is also …
Examining Problem-Solving Interpretations: The Role Of Age, Sex, And Femininity, Jennifer A. Flinn
Examining Problem-Solving Interpretations: The Role Of Age, Sex, And Femininity, Jennifer A. Flinn
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The current study examined age and sex differences in communal interpretations (statements focusing on the needs of others), and whether participants' femininity mediated these differences. One hundred and ninety six participants, 121 younger adults (M=19.26, SD=131: 53 M, 68 F) and 75 older adults (M=73.74, SD=7.65: 36 M, 39 F), were given a vignette regarding a hypothetical job relocation problem that involved either a male or female protagonist. To assess interpretations, participants were asked to indicate all the issues to be considered. The degree to which interpretations reflected communal concerns was coded. Results showed that women had higher communal interpretation …

Design Of Composite Sandwich Panels For Lightweight Applications In Heavy Vehicle Systems, Thomas H. Evans
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Vehicle systems such as cargo freight and platform trailers are a primary source of transporting heavy cargo loads. The construction and materials used in a standard trailer design contribute significantly to the overall weight. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and West Virginia University have conducted joint research to reduce the amount of fuel consumption of cargo transportation trailers by initiating a lightweight materials program. This study is aimed at the utilization of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites and Composite Sandwich technology in conjunction with innovative joining concepts to reduce trailer weight. Finite element modeling and experimental analysis reveal the …
Empirical Analysis Of Software Reliability, Margaret L. Hamill
Empirical Analysis Of Software Reliability, Margaret L. Hamill
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis presents an empirical study of architecture-based software reliability based on large real case studies. It undoubtedly demonstrates the value of using open source software to empirically study software reliability. The major goal is to empirically analyze the applicability, adequacy and accuracy of architecture-based software reliability models. In both our studies we found evidence that the number of failures due to faults in more than one component is not insignificant. Consequently, existing models that make such simplifying assumptions must be improved to account for this phenomenon. This thesis' contributions include developing automatic methods for efficient extraction of necessary data …
Predicting Inflation, And The Relationship Between Financial Integration, Financial *Development And Economic *Growth, Lillian T. Kamal
Predicting Inflation, And The Relationship Between Financial Integration, Financial *Development And Economic *Growth, Lillian T. Kamal
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Three essays are presented. The first essay re-visits the P* model (developed by Hallman, Porter and Small, 1991) with an application to US data. The central idea behind the P* model is that the price level is determined by the money stock, output and velocity. This study brings together criticisms of the P* model together in an attempt to address the major concerns with an improvement upon the existing model. A horse race is then run between the original P* model, two variant P* models, and three other models---an atheoretic naive AR process and an ARMA process as well as …
The Transtheoretical Model And Psychological Skills Training: Application And Implications With Elite Female Athletes, Linda Ann Keeler
The Transtheoretical Model And Psychological Skills Training: Application And Implications With Elite Female Athletes, Linda Ann Keeler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
There is abundant empirical evidence supporting the benefits of psychological skills training (PST) on performance (Vealey, 1994). Despite evidence of how PST can help athletic performance, some athletes still do not readily adopt its use (Gould, Tammen, Murphy, & May, 1989). Rather than ignoring individuals that are not interested (Weinberg & Williams, 2001), one possible method of approach would be to apply the transtheoretical model of behavior change (TTM) to the use of PST (Grove, Norton, Van Raalte, & Brewer, 1999). This model suggests that behavior change is a progression through a series of stages (Prochaska & DiClemente, 1983). There …
Lossless Compression Of Hyperspectral Images, Sushil Kamalchand Jain
Lossless Compression Of Hyperspectral Images, Sushil Kamalchand Jain
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Band ordering and the prediction scheme are the two major aspects of hyperspectral imaging which have been studied to improve the performance of the compression system. In the prediction module, we propose spatio-spectral prediction methods. Two non-linear spectral prediction methods have been proposed in this thesis. NPHI (Non-linear Prediction for Hyperspectral Images) is based on a band look-ahead technique wherein a reference band is included in the prediction of pixels in the current band. The prediction technique estimates the variation between the contexts of the two bands to modify the weights computed in the reference band to predict the pixels …
Allene Cyclization Chemistry: Application To The Syntheses Of Helical Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons And The Abcd Ring Core Of The Camptothecin Family Of Alkaloids, Weixiang Dai
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Thermolysis of the benzannulated enyne-allenes provides an efficient pathway to a variety of novel helical polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which are represented by a remarkably beautiful diindenophenanthrene with four congested phenyl substituents. For example, its X-ray structure shows that the four phenyl substituents are essentially parallel to one another but are virtually perpendicular to the helical axis of the diindenophenanthrene ring system. Viewing from the direction perpendicular to the helical axis, the structure resembles that of a segment of a spiral staircase having four parallel steps.;The Wagner-Meerwein rearrangement was successfully applied to 11 H-benzo[b]fluorene-11-methanols and related fluorene derivatives leading to highly …
Transactional Distance And Student Motivation: Student Perception Of Teacher Immediacy, Solidarity Toward Peer Students And Student Motivation In Distance Education, Hye Yoon Jung
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Transactional Distance Theory is conceptually significant in that the core nature of distance in distance education is not a geographical or temporal distance but a psychological or communicational distance between students and their teacher(s), as well as among students. In spite of the conceptual significance of the transactional distance theory, the interrelationships among the construct variables and propositions of the theory are unclear. The majority of studies on transactional distance theory either used the theory solely as a conceptual framework, or proposed the refinement of the theory. Literature review indicated that the theory was found to be invalid and unreliable. …
Relationship Between Damper Resistance And Damper Insertion Depth, Ranjit Jangam
Relationship Between Damper Resistance And Damper Insertion Depth, Ranjit Jangam
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Experiments were performed to determine a predictive model for sliding gate damper resistance (Xdamper). Independent variables included eight ratios of insertion depth (I) to duct diameter (D), two different values of D, four different levels of air velocity, two damper orientations, and two damper edges (Concave/Straight). Analysis of Log (Xdamper) values showed a highly linear relationship with I/D and high statistical significance (p<0.05) for all independent variables and for most two-way interactions. Nearly the entire regression model (R2 = 0.985) was explained by I/D, so all but I/D and Edge were dropped from the final model: Y Log(Xdamper) = -1.434 + 0.089*(Edge) + 4.30*( I/D) (R2 = 0.978). The resulting predictive model: Xdamper = 0.037*10(0.089*(Edge )+4.3*I/D). However error for untransformed Xdamper increased sharply with increasing (I/D) and percent errors were as high as 125% across all values of (I/D). Hence the predictive models are useful for only initial rough adjustment and should be followed by final trial and error adjustment to goal air flow.
Theory Of Mind And The Assessment Of Suggestibility In Preschoolers, Aryn C. Karpinski
Theory Of Mind And The Assessment Of Suggestibility In Preschoolers, Aryn C. Karpinski
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Researchers have been examining the relation between theory of mind and suggestibility with mixed results. Recently, researchers have suggested that theory of mind is not a dichotomous construct, but instead develops in a sequence (Wellman & Liu, 2004). This view, when combined with an examination suggestibility, may clarify the relation. The purpose of this study was to validate the Video Suggestibility Scale for Children (VSSC; Scullin & Ceci, 2001) and a theory of mind scale as predictors of suggestibility in an interview about an experienced and a non-experienced event. Ninety-one preschoolers, ages 3 to 5 years old, completed the 3-week …

Enlightened Defense: The National Security *Policy Of Thomas Jefferson, Robert R. Leonhard
Enlightened Defense: The National Security *Policy Of Thomas Jefferson, Robert R. Leonhard
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The triumph of Thomas Jefferson and the Democratic Republicans in 1800 left the deposed Federalists aghast at what this Francophile, anti nationalist, reputedly atheistic president might do to the country. Despite Jefferson's impulses toward pacifism, national isolation, the diffusion of political power, and healing faction, the eight years of his two administrations were destined to be as calm as a hurricane. The turbulent situation in Europe had already made a mockery of Washington's advice to avoid entanglement, and during Jefferson's presidency, the dangers only increased.;Jefferson's ideas on national security were diametrically opposed to those of Alexander Hamilton and the Federalists. …
Effect Of High Salt Intake On Arteriolar Responses To Metabolic Stimuli, Paul J. Marvar
Effect Of High Salt Intake On Arteriolar Responses To Metabolic Stimuli, Paul J. Marvar
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Study I evaluated the possibility that a HS diet can reduce the arteriolar response to muscle contraction through reduced nitric oxide (NO) availability and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) activity. Spinotrapezius muscle arterioles were examined in rats fed a normal salt (NS; 0.45%) or high salt (HS; 4%) diets. Arteriolar diameter responses to an increase in metabolic demand were significantly less in HS rats and these HS rats exhibited increased presence of arteriolar ROS. The attenuated responses to muscle contraction in HS rats were not restored in the presence of ROS scavengers, and inhibition of NO synthesis had no effect …

Field Perceptions Of The Vision Initiative For Children's Preschool Vision Screening Training Model, P. Kay Nottingham Chaplin
Field Perceptions Of The Vision Initiative For Children's Preschool Vision Screening Training Model, P. Kay Nottingham Chaplin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Because lay vision screeners rarely receive formal training in how to screen vision and because older children were seen in clinic with vision disorders that should have been detected earlier through vision screening, a pediatric ophthalmologist and the researcher created the Vision Initiative for Children (VIC) in 2001 as a statewide program of the West Virginia University Eye Institute. VIC has trained, equipped, and provided ongoing support to lay individuals who are mandated or want to screen preschoolers' vision. This program evaluation study explored, from the perspective of Head Start personnel, whether VIC prepares Head Start personnel to screen preschoolers' …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study examines state domestic violence policies and their affect on state domestic homicide rates. This research builds on the literature in the area of policy strength and its impact on policy implementers, specifically examining seven of the domestic violence policies recommended by the 1994 and 2000 Violence against Women Acts. Policies were categorized as "coercive," "hortatory," or "catalytic" and data were collected from all fifty states and the District of Columbia. Descriptive statistics are used to determine the effectiveness of the policies on the probability that a state would fall above or below the average national domestic homicide rate …
Der Opheliakult Und Seine Entwicklung In Der Europaeischen Kunst Und Literatur., Miriam Roth
Der Opheliakult Und Seine Entwicklung In Der Europaeischen Kunst Und Literatur., Miriam Roth
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Validation Of Nitrogen Oxides And Pm Correction Factors For Heavy Duty Diesel Engines., Mahesh Govindareddy
Validation Of Nitrogen Oxides And Pm Correction Factors For Heavy Duty Diesel Engines., Mahesh Govindareddy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Considering the contribution of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) from on-road heavy duty diesel engines to the atmospheric inventory, their accurate measurement is important. According to the Code of Federal Regulations Title 40 Part 86 Subpart N, NOx measured at a given temperature and relative humidity is corrected to standard conditions using a humidity correction factor. This factor depends on the intake air absolute humidity. However, this correction factor was developed in the 1970’s and may not be applicable to the existing engine technologies. Also, after the 1998 Consent Decrees, in-use testing has become a part of engine certification and the …

In this thesis we perform a measurements-based study of an e-commerce application that uses web services to execute business operations. We use the TPC-W specification to generate a session-based workload. The component level response times and the hardware resource usage on the different machines are measured. The component level response times are extracted from the application server logs. From the results it is seen that as the workload increases the response times of the web services components increase. From the hardware resource …
Cracking Studies Of High-Performance Concrete For Bridge Decks, Zhiguo Gong
Cracking Studies Of High-Performance Concrete For Bridge Decks, Zhiguo Gong
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The cracking problem has been one of the major concerns for any concrete bridge deck, especially for cast-in-place concrete decks. The cracking can accelerate deterioration of the structure, thereby increasing maintenance costs and potentially shortening the system service-life. In order to achieve low permeability and reasonable strength, HPC deck mixture designs usually include a higher cementitious material content, which means more shrinkage, and therefore, makes the bridge deck more susceptible to cracking. Thus, further and better understanding of shrinkage and cracking properties of HPC designated for bridge decks is necessary. As part of a comprehensive project, this dissertation is focused …
