The Bailey Method was developed by Robert Bailey of the Illinois State DOT. It was intended to be a tool to predict changes in voids in the mineral aggregate (VMA) resulting from gradation alterations in compacted asphalt concrete samples. This research evaluates the changes in VMA due to gradation alterations of four contractors' mix designs. By providing a tool to predict VMA, a desired gradation for asphalt mixtures can be developed to create a strong aggregate skeleton for rut resistance, durability, and adequate VMA.;The objective of this research was to evaluate the Bailey Method to predict voids in the mineral …

The Study Of Down-Hole Hydro-Cyclone Efficiency In Oil Wells Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Ahmed A. Yusuf Dec 2006

The Study Of Down-Hole Hydro-Cyclone Efficiency In Oil Wells Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Ahmed A. Yusuf

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Water is by far the largest waste stream associated with oil and gas production and it is unimaginable to find an oil reservoir absolutely free from connate water. Water management has become an important issue of hydrocarbon production, since the produced water increases as the field grows older and the cost of water handling, such as separation, treatment and repair is dramatically increasing. Down-Hole Separation (DOWS) and re-injection results in the production of oil to the surface, while portions of water are injected to the underground formation without ever being lifted to the surface.;DOWS depends on geological characteristics of the …

Effects Of Duty Cycles On Diesel Engine Component Life Estimation, Dave Jayasinghe Aug 2006

Effects Of Duty Cycles On Diesel Engine Component Life Estimation, Dave Jayasinghe

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Engine manufactures have relied on over designed of engines and performance testing to ensure product reliability. The efforts to maximize efficiency and to predict performance characteristics have evoked an interest to study the in-cylinder pressure throughout the respective duty cycle. The duty cycle of an engine is defined as the history of speed and load conditions over which the engine operates in a specific application. Understanding the transient on-road diesel engine duty cycles has been one of major goals for the engine developers. To date there have not been any research performed to identify a wide variety of on-road diesel …

Characterization Of Laboratory Simulated Road Paving-Like Asphalt By High Performance Liquid Chromatography And Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Brandon F. Law

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Prolonged, extensive exposure to asphalt fume has been associated with several adverse health effects. Inhaled polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from asphalt fume exposure are of concern. The objective of this study was to characterize both qualitative and quantitative differences between fumes generated at 150°C and 180°C using a well controlled laboratory road paving fume generation system. Fumes were characterized by (1) total vapor and particulate concentration, (2) simulated boiling point profile and (3) specific PAH content. The mean concentrations of the vapor fractions generated at 180°C and 150°C were 23.3 mg/m3 and 11.2 mg/m3, respectively, demonstrating a statistically significant increase …

Democracy By Any Other Name Just Isn't The Same, Clarissa Estep Aug 2006

Democracy By Any Other Name Just Isn't The Same, Clarissa Estep

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Democracy has been one of the fundamental achievements in the post-World War II era. Because evidence of the democratic peace exists, illiberal states are being pressured to form democracies. However, democratic consolidation, on which the democratic peace relies, remains a persistent problem of the Third World. Thus, the paradox remains that democratizing states are prone to violence which undermines peace and security. Considering that the majority of states in the international community are mixed regimes, or anocracies, this poses a problem for reducing interstate and intrastate conflict in these regimes. It is not enough to declare success with the establishment …

Curve Number Dependence On Basic Hydrologic Variables Governing Runoff, Samuel J. Lamont Aug 2006

Curve Number Dependence On Basic Hydrologic Variables Governing Runoff, Samuel J. Lamont

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The suitability of applying the NRCS Curve Number (CN) to continuous runoff prediction is examined by studying the dependence of the CN on several hydrologic variables. The continuous watershed model Hydrologic Simulation Program-FORTRAN (HSPF) is employed as a theoretical watershed in two numerical procedures designed to investigate the influence of soil type, soil depth, storm depth, storm distribution, and initial abstraction ratio value (lambda) on the CN. This study stems from a concurrent project involving the design of a computer modeling system to support the Cumulative Hydrologic Impact Assessments (CHIA) of over 230 watersheds throughout WV. A link between the …

Measuring Chemotaxis In Borrelia Burgdorferi The Lyme Disease Spirochete, Richard Gerrit Bakker Aug 2006

Measuring Chemotaxis In Borrelia Burgdorferi The Lyme Disease Spirochete, Richard Gerrit Bakker

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Borrelia burgdorferi is the spirochete causative agent of Lyme disease. The chemotaxis and motility systems of these bacteria are far less well described than that of Escherichia coli or Salmonella enterica. This dissertation explores the role of the CheA proteins in the chemotactic response and describes the first defined attractants for B. burgdorferi.;In order to test hypotheses, we developed or optimized three protocols. To characterize the motion of cells, two motion tracking systems were optimized. The Hobson BacTracker allowed for tracking cell motions in real time. This hardware/software chimera, while powerful for the specific application, utilizes a cumbersome interface. Therefore, …

Resistance To Change Of Responding To Stimulus Relations, Marta Leon Aug 2006

Resistance To Change Of Responding To Stimulus Relations, Marta Leon

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Three experiments assessed resistance to change of response accuracy under different reinforcement rates. Fifteen college students responded to a matching-to-sample task, with one set of baseline conditional relations reinforced at a rich rate and another set reinforced at a lean rate. In two experiments, resistance to change was assessed by presenting tests for emergent equivalence relations and then reversing some of the baseline conditional discriminations and examining changes in the equivalence classes after the reversal; the experiments differed in the presence or absence of overtraining for the rich condition. The third experiment assessed resistance to change by testing for emergent …

Efficacy Of In-Home Parent -Child Interaction Therapy, Lisa M. Ware Aug 2006

Efficacy Of In-Home Parent -Child Interaction Therapy, Lisa M. Ware

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In recent years, there has been much discussion of the efficacy and effectiveness of mental health interventions for children as well as the transportation of empirically-supported treatments (ESTs) to field settings. While there have been efforts to improve dissemination of ESTs, little research has examined the efficacy of treatments in settings other than the traditional clinic. A logical initial step in this line of research is to examine whether the efficacy of ESTs can be demonstrated in community settings such as in the home environment. There are many hypothesized benefits to providing services in the home setting. Based on the …

The Effect Of A Diet Supplemented With Flaxseed Oil On The Lipid Content And Fatty Acid Profile Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) Muscle Tissue, Jason P. Nguyen Aug 2006

The Effect Of A Diet Supplemented With Flaxseed Oil On The Lipid Content And Fatty Acid Profile Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) Muscle Tissue, Jason P. Nguyen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This experiment examined the effect of nine diets supplemented with varied combinations of flaxseed oil and vitamin E on the total lipid content and fatty acid profile of rainbow trout over four months. Mean values were tested for significant differences between groups using one-way analyses of variance.;The most flaxseed oil supplementation, 23.5%, resulted in the highest concentration of total omega-3 fat in fillets (P<0.05). This was due to the increased (P<0.05) concentration of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). The 23.5% flaxseed oil trout had the lowest (P<0.05) proportion of saturated fatty acids and the highest amount of total unsaturated fatty acid. Unexpectedly, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) contents significantly decreased as the experiment progressed. No significant differences were seen among total fat contents. The results indicate that feeding a diet supplemented with flaxseed oil and vitamin E produces omega-3 enhanced trout with higher ALA but lower EPA and DHA.

A Component-Based Approach To Verification And Validation Of Formal Software Models, Dejan Desovski Aug 2006

A Component-Based Approach To Verification And Validation Of Formal Software Models, Dejan Desovski

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Formal methods for verification of software systems often face the problem of state explosion and complexity. We present a divide and conquer methodology that leads to component based verification and analysis of formal requirements specifications expressed using Software Cost Reduction (SCR) models. The proposed methodology has the following steps: model partitioning, partition verification (either by model checking or testing) and composition of verification results.;We define a novel decomposition methodology for SCR specifications based on min-cut graph algorithms. The methodology identifies components in given SCR specifications and automates related abstraction methods. It also provides guidance on how to perform verification and …

Win, Lose, And Draw: Civil War And The Determinants Of State Concessions, Frank Vaughan Aug 2006

Win, Lose, And Draw: Civil War And The Determinants Of State Concessions, Frank Vaughan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research develops an explanation of the causal factors that influence state concessions offered in negotiated settlements ending civil wars. It proposes an explanation drawn from bargaining theory, existing literature addressing the likelihood of negotiated settlements, and inductively derived variables. Specifically, it integrates the link between several general factors associated with conflict---the costs of war, incentives to cheat, the divisibility of stakes, the degree of democracy of the state, the presence or absence of a stalemate, and the timing and location of the settlement---and the degree to which states make concessions to the rebels. The relationships between these factors are …

Study Of The Dynamic Behavior Of Tablet Movement In A Rotating Drum Using Discrete Element Modeling (Dem) Method, Yongxin Song

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Particle shape is a very important factor affecting the accuracy of discrete element modeling (DEM) simulations. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine its effect on the dynamic behavior of tablet movement in a rotating drum. First, the shape of typical standard round tablets was represented using the intersection of three convex spherical surfaces. Contact algorithms for Tablet-Flat Surface, Tablet-Curved Surface and Tablet-Tablet were developed based on the geometry of this representation of the tablets' shape. Good agreement was obtained between the simulation results for the collision of two tablets and those obtained from experiments. In addition, simulation …

Characterization Of Self -Healing Composite Materials, Kevin John Ford Aug 2006

Characterization Of Self -Healing Composite Materials, Kevin John Ford

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Damage occurs in almost every composite material in the form of microcracks that develop in the epoxy matrix that binds the fibers together. Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign have recently developed a method to reverse the effects of, or heal, damage in the epoxy matrix. Their in-situ self-healing system uses embedded microcapsules and a catalyst that trigger a romp reaction in an effort to rebond the microcracks. Several models have been developed in an effort to predict how a composite laminate damages. One model in particular, the Continuous Damage Mechanics model, CDM that has been developed at …

Technical And Economic Effectiveness For Repair With Frp Of Concrete T-Beam Bridges: Case Study For Penndot-District 3, Daniel A. Brayack Aug 2006

Technical And Economic Effectiveness For Repair With Frp Of Concrete T-Beam Bridges: Case Study For Penndot-District 3, Daniel A. Brayack

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The bridge inventory of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation-District 3 (PennDOT-D3) includes 128 concrete T-Beam bridges built in 1920 to 1960. Due to deterioration over time, a significant number of these bridges are in need of repair or replacement. Traditional methods of repair require temporary bridge-closures and do not provide long-term effective solutions. Moreover, the cost of replacement is not financially viable. Thus, PennDOT D-3 sponsored this project to investigate the technical and economic suitability of a relatively new technology, widely used for seismic retrofit, consisting of externally bonded Fiber-Reinforce Polymer (FRP) for repair and retrofit of concrete T-Beam bridges …

The Study Of Selected Twentieth-Century American Piano Compositions Appropriate For Use With Freshman And Sophomore College Piano Majors: Performance And Pedagogical Suggestions, Li-Jung Lee

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Studying and performing twentieth-century compositions are important for piano students to become well-rounded musicians. This study presents a performance analysis of repertoire from three highly influential American composers: Four Piano Blues (1926-1948) by Aaron Copland, Excursions Op. 20 (1944) by Samuel Barber and Suite de Danzas Criollas Op. 15 (1946) by Alberto Ginastera. Although these works are not the most technically demanding works by these composers, the nationalistic character of the Argentine and American folk melodies and dances; the popular styles of ragtime, blues and jazz; as well as their incorporation into twentieth-century compositional technique will challenge students in their …

The Effect Of Reservoir Characteristics On Methane Production From Hydrate Bearing Formations, Sachin Gandra Aug 2006

The Effect Of Reservoir Characteristics On Methane Production From Hydrate Bearing Formations, Sachin Gandra

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Demand for natural gas is ever increasing and according to DOE [1], by 2040, 10 Tcf/yr of gas has to be imported. Interest in the potentially large deposits of natural gas hydrates and hydrate capped gas reservoirs is increasing because a conservative estimate of gas hydrate reserve potential of US exclusive economic zone is 200,000 Tcf [2, 3]. If 1% of this were recovered, that would be greater than the cumulative gas reserves of conventional gas sources (1000-1500 Tcf). Even 1% production of this recovered gas per year would make USA the exporter of gas.;Gas hydrates are solid, crystalline ice …

A New Reduced Order Model For Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Suryanarayana Raju Pakalapati

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Fuel cells are one of the promising eco-friendly and efficient electricity generators for future energy infrastructure. Rigorous research has been underway for over a decade to develop fuel cell technology as a viable alternative to the conventional energy sources. Numerical modeling has played a prominent role in such research endeavors. Detailed multi-dimensional models reveal important information regarding the performance of a fuel cell but they are computationally intensive. Relatively simple zero- and one-dimensional models on the other hand average out the details that could be critical. The topic of this dissertation is a new strategy for modeling fuel cells which …

Subsurface imaging technologies are part of the electromagnetic (EM) geophysical methods. EM technologies such as radio imaging method (RIM), ground penetrating radar (GPR), and drill string radar (DSR) have great application potentials in the mining industry.;However, the success for applying the EM methods to subsurface observations is largely dependant on the correct evaluation of the electrical properties (e.g., wave attenuation rate and dielectric constant) of the rocks in the domain of interest. Study of the electrical properties of rocks was performed in order to gain better understanding about their variations across the country. The study was done specifically for rocks …

Proton Coupled Electron Transfer Kinetics Of Redox Centers Attached To Self -Assembled Monolayers On Electrodes, Nicholas Madhiri Aug 2006

Proton Coupled Electron Transfer Kinetics Of Redox Centers Attached To Self -Assembled Monolayers On Electrodes, Nicholas Madhiri

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions play an important role in many biochemical systems and have been focus of great interest recently. These reactions can be represented by a general equation: Ox + ne - + hH+ ↔ Red.;Traditionally, these reactions have been studied by applying predictions from the stepwise model developed by E. Laviron in the early 1980s. This model is based upon treating the proton transfer step and electron transfer step as discrete steps. Proton transfer is assumed to be at equilibrium under all conditions. However, there is also evidence suggesting a concerted mechanism in which the electron and …

Government Hesitancy Amidst Industry Discord: Decline Of The United States-Flag Merchant Marine After World War Ii, Deborah J. Hennen Aug 2006

Government Hesitancy Amidst Industry Discord: Decline Of The United States-Flag Merchant Marine After World War Ii, Deborah J. Hennen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The American-flag merchant marine became the world's largest during World War II. U.S.-flag ships carried most of the nation's commerce, and the world looked to America for shipping strength. After the war, the different parties in the maritime industry began to fight for their individual interests as the American standard of living became the highest in the world. The federal government hesitated to step in and calm the growing discord, and several decades passed as American maritime policy stagnated. Only after the parties in the industry began cooperating with each other did Congress take positive steps to aid the American-flag …

Understanding The Psychosocial Development Of Neighborhoods: Implications For Situational Policing, Jeri Kirby Aug 2006

Understanding The Psychosocial Development Of Neighborhoods: Implications For Situational Policing, Jeri Kirby

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Community policing strategies are aimed at reducing crime and getting neighbors more involved. These goals of achieving safe neighborhoods seem just outside of the police department's reach. The police have been unable to achieve sustained satisfaction with the residents while also deterring crime and disorder. Research has suggested that collective efficacy within neighborhoods has a strong relation to the level of crime and disorder (Sampson, 1999). Assuming that neighborhoods have unique properties/characteristics, other researchers explored the idea that neighborhoods behave like groups and develop through identifiable stages (Nolan, 2004). Using qualitative methods inside the Pittsburgh Police Department and in four …

Establishing A Historic Benchmark For Rimrock Pine Communities At New River Gorge National River, West Virginia, Richard Stockton Maxwell Aug 2006

Establishing A Historic Benchmark For Rimrock Pine Communities At New River Gorge National River, West Virginia, Richard Stockton Maxwell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The structure and composition of a rimrock pine community was studied in the New River Gorge National River, West Virginia. A forest survey found that the overstory was dominated by Pinus virginiana, Nyssa sylvatica, Oxydendrum arboreum, Acer rubrum, and Quercus spp. The importance of Pinus virginiana decreased rapidly with increasing distance from the cliff edge and was replaced by hardwood competitors. Regeneration of Pinus virginiana (∼4,200 stems/ha) was deemed inadequate to sustain a pine forest except on the harshest sites near the cliff edge. A 108-year (1897-2005) fire chronology was constructed from 51 fire scars recorded by 23 pines along …

Modeling Small Business Growth, Migration Behavior, Local Public Services And Household Income In Appalachia: A Spatial Simultaneous Equations Approach, Gebremeskel H. Gebremariam Aug 2006

Modeling Small Business Growth, Migration Behavior, Local Public Services And Household Income In Appalachia: A Spatial Simultaneous Equations Approach, Gebremeskel H. Gebremariam

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In an effort to analyze the interdependences among small business growth, migration behavior, local public services, and median household income, this study developed a simultaneous-equation system under the assumptions of profit maximization of firm and utility maximization of households as well as the neoclassical assumption of equilibrium growth in a partial lag-adjustment growth-equilibrium framework. This model is an extension of the "jobs follow people or people follow jobs" literature and it improved previous models in the growth-equilibrium tradition by explicitly modeling local government and regional income in the growth process. It also explicitly modeled gross in-migration and gross out-migration separately …
