Sex Segregation And Young Adults' Gender-Typed Attitudes About Occupations, Lisa M. Didonato
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The present study examined the relation between the prevalence of sex segregation, or the division of men and women within social interactions, and young adults' gender-typed attitudes. Specifically, gender-typed attitudes about the occupations that are preferred for the self and viewed as appropriate for others were investigated. The objectives of the current study were partially based on the suggestion that gender-typed attitudes may be a consequence, as well as a cause, of sex segregation (McHale, Kim, Whiteman, & Crouter, 2004). The gender-typed personality traits of expressivity (i.e., traits typically associated with femininity; e.g., being emotional) and instrumentality (i.e., traits typically …

Are Strict Churches Really Stronger? A Study Of Strictness, Congregational Activity, And Growth In American Protestant Churches, Rebecca Ann Flynn
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to determine whether strict churches are more likely than others to experience growth and what role congregational activity might play in the relationship between strictness and growth. Using data from the Faith Communities Today (FACT) 2000 survey, I tested Dean Kelley's (1972) claim that strictness is an important factor in church growth and Laurence Iannaccone's (1992) assertion that strict churches grow because they reduce free-riding, or increase congregational activity. The results lend only limited support for the idea that strict churches are more likely than more lenient churches to experience growth and do not …

Applications Of Krische Allylation Towards Natural Product Synthesis., Melvin Rajaratnam
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A short asymmetric synthesis of the anti-cancer natural product Rugulactone has been attempted. The synthetic route begins with a mono-Krische allylation of 1,3-propane diol resulting in (S)-hex-5-ene-1,3-diol. Acylation followed by ring closing metathesis (RCM) led to the desired α-pyranone core. Similarly, we focused on the bis-Krische allylation, selective acylation and the RCM sequence towards total synthesis of various αpyranone natural products and their analogues. The progress toward this synthesis is described.
