Optimization And Analytics Of Decarbonized Forest And Biomass Supply Chains, Xufeng Zhang
Optimization And Analytics Of Decarbonized Forest And Biomass Supply Chains, Xufeng Zhang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
First, a data-driven holistic analysis framework was developed to aid the industrial development of forest biomass for bioenergy to promote the regional bioeconomy. Leveraging the existing but fragmented multi-source data, four components of industrial bioenergy development were integrated into the framework including spatial statistical analysis of biomass feedstock and bioenergy production, machine learning-based suitability assessment, bioenergy plant sites identification and ranking, and socio-economic impacts assessment. A case study was conducted for forest biomass to pellet fuel in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic region. Our results indicate that the great potential of forest biomass with high variation at the county level is primarily …
Transitions Between The Steps Of Group Iic Intron Forward And Reverse Splicing And Integration Into Dna, Claire Mae Smathers
Transitions Between The Steps Of Group Iic Intron Forward And Reverse Splicing And Integration Into Dna, Claire Mae Smathers
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Group II introns are ancient ribozymes capable of self-excision and mobility into new genomic locations. As the ancestors of both the eukaryotic spliceosome and eukaryotic retroelements, these simple RNA machines serve as excellent models for understanding the mechanisms of both gene splicing and retroelement activity in eukaryotes. Although group II introns have been studied for decades, knowledge of the most unique and arguably evolutionarily relevant class of group II introns, IIC, is limited. Our knowledge is especially limited in terms of understanding how IIC introns mediate the transition between the two transesterification steps of forward splicing and reverse splicing into …
Getting To The Root Cause: The Genetic Underpinnings Of Root System Architecture And Rhizodeposition In Sorghum, Farren Smith
Getting To The Root Cause: The Genetic Underpinnings Of Root System Architecture And Rhizodeposition In Sorghum, Farren Smith
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Plants are some of the most diverse organisms on earth, consisting of more than 350,000 different species. To understand the underlying processes that contributed to plant diversification, it is fundamental to identify the genetic and genomic components that facilitated various adaptations over evolutionary history. Most studies to date have focused on the underlying controls of above-ground traits such as grain and vegetation; however, little is known about the “hidden half” of plants. Root systems comprise half of the total plant structure and provide vital functions such as anchorage, resource acquisition, and storage of energy reserves. The execution of these key …

Athlete Attachment Style With Coaches As A Predictor Of Athlete Disordered Eating And Body Image Anxiety, Taylor Allen
Athlete Attachment Style With Coaches As A Predictor Of Athlete Disordered Eating And Body Image Anxiety, Taylor Allen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The coach-athlete relationship has been established as an important and significant relationship within athletes’ lives (Davis & Jowett, 2010; Jowett, 2008). There is also literature that demonstrates the impact of the sport culture environment and the quality of the coach-athlete relationship on disordered eating and body image anxiety in athletes (Galli et al., 2011; Petrie & Greenleaf, 2012; Reel et al., 2010; Shanmugam et al., 2013). However, much of the current literature does not examine this significant coach-athlete relationship from an attachment framework. Current literature supports the significance of the coach-athlete relationship and more recent research supports viewing coaches as …

Beyond What's Missing: Silence In Women-Authored Novels From Wollstonecraft To Shelley, Kelli Wilhelm
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation responds to and intends to subvert binary interpretations of silence, particularly women’s silences, as representing either submission or resistance to oppressive institutions and societal expectations. I examine five women-authored novels from British Romanticism. The first half of this dissertation focuses on three radical works of the 1790s, Mary Wollstonecraft’s The Wrongs of Woman, Mary Hays’s The Victim of Prejudice, and Charlotte Smith's The Old Manor House. The second half discusses two well-known early nineteenth-century novels, Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818). Through examinations of these novels, I discuss how silence functions …

Targeting Vulnerabilities In Cell State And Calcium Signaling For The Treatment Of Lung Cancer, Clark Jones
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Lung cancer remains the deadliest of all cancers due to the high mutational burden associated with the disease. Combating mutational drivers and drug resistance proves to be essential in the development of novel therapies to improve patient outcomes. A first-in-class cyclic peptide known as MTI-101 has been shown to induce necrotic cell death in a caspase independent manner. MTI-101 was derived from the linear peptide known as HYD1 that was found in a high throughput screen to block cell adhesion with the extracellular matrix. The compound was further optimized and cyclized to the currently used MTI-101 that was found to …
A Monte Carlo Simulation Of Rat Choice Behavior With Interdependent Outcomes, Michelle A. Frankot
A Monte Carlo Simulation Of Rat Choice Behavior With Interdependent Outcomes, Michelle A. Frankot
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Preclinical behavioral neuroscience often uses choice paradigms to capture psychiatric symptoms. In particular, the subfield of operant research produces nested datasets with many discrete choices in a session. The standard analytic practice is to aggregate choice into a continuous variable and analyze using ANOVA or linear regression. However, choice data often have multiple interdependent outcomes of interest, violating an assumption of general linear models. The aim of the current study was to quantify the accuracy of linear mixed-effects regression (LMER) for analyzing data from a 4-choice operant task called the Rodent Gambling Task (RGT), which measures decision-making in the context …

The Relationship Amongst Faith, Perceived Discrimination, Sexuality Acceptance, And Psychological Well-Being In Black Sexual Minority Individuals, Sandra Fanning
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The present study explored the relationship amongst faith, internalized homophobia, outness, perceived discrimination, and psychological well-being in Black sexual minorities (BSM). BSM participants (N = 211) completed an online survey assessing these variables. The result of this study indicate that faith is not related to internalized homophobia, outness, perceived discrimination, or psychological well-being in BSM individuals. However, internalized homophobia, outness, and perceived discrimination all independently predict psychological well-being. Explicitly, greater reports of internalized homophobia, outness, and perceived discrimination predicted worse psychological well-being in participants. However, the effects of internalized homophobia and outness were no longer present when accounting for …

Parenting Stress As A Moderator Of The Relationship Between Child Emotional And Behavioral Problems And Parental Readiness For Change, Connor Fais
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The current study applied the Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change (Prochaska & DiClemente, 1983) to parenting behavior, as past research has suggested that increasing parental motivation and readiness for change is associated with greater client participation and improved therapeutic outcomes (Dowell & Ogles, 2010; Karver et al., 2006). The current study attempted to replicate Jones et al.’s (2017) primary findings and add to the current body of literature on parental readiness for change by examining parenting stress as a moderator of the relationship between internalizing and externalizing child problems and parental readiness for change (Jones et al., 2017; Wade & …

Application Of Fiber Optics Das On Completion Design Optimization, Aliou Sylla
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Interstage communication during well stimulation reducing the effectivity of the well completion is known to be a concern in the oil and gas industry. The leading cause of this is fracture communication due to the presence of natural fractures where the formation is being hydraulically fractured. In this study, a technique was developed to map natural fractures, on a larger scale, underground to be able to avoid the high fracture intensity zones when hydraulically fracturing. This study developed a technique to optimize well completion designs by introducing the ability of locating natural fractures zones in the formation (Marcellus Shale) which …

Developments Of Advanced Cathodes And Stabilized Zinc Anodes For High-Performance Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries, Xiujuan Chen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Aqueous rechargeable zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have attracted considerable attention as one of the most promising energy storage systems for the grid-scale application owing to the natural merits of metallic Zn, including a high theoretical capacity, suitable redox potential, low cost, high safety, and eco-friendliness. However, the existing aqueous ZIBs are far from satisfying the requirements of practical applications. Significant challenges hindering the further development of ZIBs come from the low utilization and poor cycling stability of cathodes and limited reversibility of Zn anodes associated with dendrite growth, corrosion, and passivation. To date, enormous efforts have been devoted to developing high-performance …

Searching Harder, Localizing Better, Classifying Faster: Optimizing Fast Radio Burst Detection And Analysis, Kshitij Aggarwal
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Fast Radio Bursts (or FRBs) are millisecond-duration transients of extragalactic origin. They exhibit dispersion caused by propagation through an ionized medium, and quantified by Dispersion Measure (DM). Around 800 FRBs (24 repeaters) have been discovered; so far, 24 FRBs have been confidently associated with a host galaxy. In this thesis, we discuss multiple new FRB search and analysis techniques and the corresponding tools that enable us to search for FRBs harder, localize them better, and classify candidates faster.
We discuss five open-source software suites that can be used in FRB analysis. These suites are used to distinguish between FRBs and …
Asymmetry Risk And Asset Pricing, Jiahao Gu
Asymmetry Risk And Asset Pricing, Jiahao Gu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The dissertation primarily focuses on asymmetry risk and its role in asset pricing. Asymmetry risk is a crucial component of systematic risk. However, it does not attract much attention, probably because of the misconception that it is similar to other asymmetry measures (e.g., skewness). Chapter 1 defines the asymmetry risk. The risk indifference curve (RIC) predicts two asymmetry premiums in the return distribution rather than one in the downside. I also derive the risk-neutral measure of asymmetry risk.
Chapter 2 empirically investigates the asymmetry beta's return predictability and tail risk hedging ability. Consistent with the risk indifference curve, the asymmetry …

Comparing Common Procedures Used To Manipulate Reinforcer Magnitude, Michael Steele Yencha
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Reinforcer magnitude is one of several parameters of reinforcement. In the present study, it referred to the quantitative value of the reinforcer in terms of duration of access to a finite supply of grain pellets. Pigeons responded on concurrent-chain schedules earning one of several reinforcer durations depending on response allocation and experimental conditions. Experiment 1 consisted of relatively long reinforcer durations available for completing one chain compared to relatively short durations available on the other. Response allocation in the initial link determined the reinforcer duration, but responses in the terminal link produced no change in the upcoming reinforcer. This arrangement …

The objective of this research is to analyze composite plates using the classical laminated plate theory (CLPT), first-order deformation theory (FSDT), and higher-order deformation theory (HSDT) with the applicable finite element modeling (FEM) for each theory. This thesis investigates which theory is more efficient and accurate and evaluates the benefits of using an h-p-version …
Gas Phase Reactions Of Cyclopentadiene With Ch And Oh Radicals, Kacee Lynn Caster
Gas Phase Reactions Of Cyclopentadiene With Ch And Oh Radicals, Kacee Lynn Caster
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and carbon-based nanoparticles in combustion environments is driven by the pyrolysis and oxidation of abundant fuel molecules. The subsequent growth of these pyrolytic byproducts is then propagated by reactions with small free radical species like OH, CH, O atoms, and C2H. Cyclopentadiene (C5H6) is a significant five-member combustion intermediate that has been detected in many high temperature reactions, such as in the pyrolysis of jet fuels like JP-10. Experimental and theoretical investigations in the reactions of cyclopentadiene with these small free radical species are necessary towards understanding …
Topic Modeling And Cultural Nature Of Citations, Marie Coraline Dumaz
Topic Modeling And Cultural Nature Of Citations, Marie Coraline Dumaz
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Ever since the beginning of research journals, the number of academic publications has been increasing steadily. Nowadays, especially, with the new importance of online open-access journals and databases, research papers are more easily available to read and share. It also becomes harder to keep up with novelties and grasp an idea of the general impact of a given researcher, institution, journal, or field. For this reason, different bibliometric indicators are now routinely used to classify and evaluate the impact or significance of individual researchers, conferences, journals, or entire scientific communities. In this thesis, we provide tools to study trends in …

Nitrite Supplementation Restores Aortic Health In Chronically Stressed Mice, Tyler Coblentz
Nitrite Supplementation Restores Aortic Health In Chronically Stressed Mice, Tyler Coblentz
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Chronic stress increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease potentially via increases in elastic artery stiffness and endothelial dysfunction. Decreased bioavailability of the potent vasodilator nitric oxide (NO) describes a hallmark of endothelial dysfunction. Nitrite reduces into active NO, providing an alternative pathway of NO restoration. The effect of nitrite supplementation on aortic endothelial function has yet to be determined in chronically stressed mice. We hypothesized that nitrite supplementation would rescue chronic stress-attributed impairments in aortic endothelial function.
Mice at 18 weeks of age underwent an unpredictable chronic mild stress (UCMS; 5 days/week for 7 hrs/day) paradigm to elicit a …

In recent years, the advancement of industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing has made a large number of industrial process data attainable with the use of sensors installed in the machineries. This thesis proposes an experimental predictive maintenance framework for an industrial drying hopper so that it can detect any unusual event in the hopper which reduces the risk of erroneous fault diagnosis in the manufacturing shop floor. The experimental framework uses Deep Learning (DL) algorithms in order to classify Multivariate Time Series (MTS) data into two categories- failure or unusual events and regular events, thus formulating the problem as binary …
An End-To-End Face Recognition System Evaluation Framework, James Andrew Duncan
An End-To-End Face Recognition System Evaluation Framework, James Andrew Duncan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The performance of face recognition system components is traditionally reported using metrics such as the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC), Cumulative Match Characteristic (CMC), and Identification Error Tradeoff (IET). Recently, new metrics have been published to take advantage of annotation-dense datasets such as IARPA Janus Benchmark-Surveillance and IARPA Janus Benchmark-Multi Domain Face to describe end-to-end face recognition system performance. Unlike traditional (component-level) analysis, end-to-end analysis of a system produces a metric proportional to the experience of a user of a face recognition system. The End-to-End Cumulative Match Characteristic (E2ECMC) summarizes detection, identity consolidation, and identity retrieval performance. The End-to-End Subject Cumulative …
