Four fleets of heavy-duty diesel engine vehicles were emissions characterized using the West Virginia University (WVU) Transportable Heavy Duty Vehicle Emissions Testing Laboratory chassis dynamometer. Diesel exhaust emissions are comprised of a mixture of gases, liquid aerosols and substances made up of trace elements. They contain complex products of combustion including; carbon (soot), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, aldehydes, hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), and water. Cytochrome P450 enzymes can exhibit non-Michaelis-Menten, or atypical kinetics. In particular, dapsone activates CYP2C9-mediated flurbiprofen 4 '-hydroxylation. However, the mechanism of activation of CYP2C9 is poorly understood. The activation of flurbiprofen, naproxen, and piroxicam metabolism by dapsone was investigated, fitting kinetic data to a two-site effector model, indicating that the CYP2C9 active site may have multiple binding regions. In addition the structural requirements for activation of CYP2C9 were explored using structural analogs of dapsone, with results suggesting that a sulfone group between two benzene rings is necessary for activation. c-Src and c-Yes are two widely expressed and highly homologous members of the Src family of non-receptor tyrosine kinases and are involved in a diverse range of cellular signaling pathways. They are frequently activated in human cancers, and thus represent potential targets for anti-tumor drug design. The high level of homology between these two kinases includes not only sequence similarity, but also overlapping regulation and function. Despite the redundancies between c-Src and c-Yes, however, specificity in signaling has been demonstrated between the two proteins. Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) is a potent anti-inflammatory neuropeptide that inhibits the function of activated macrophages, inhibits the production of proinflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNF-α and enhances production of the antiinflammatory cytokine IL-10 in lipopolysacharide (LPS)-stimulated peritoneal macrophages. The present study describes the effect of VIP on cell death resulting from LPS exposure on rat alveolar macrophages in vitro. The experiments show that VIP attenuates cell death in LPS-treated alveolar macrophages. The results suggest that the anti-inflammatory action of VIP in LPS-treated lungs may be important in limiting pulmonary inflammatory responses to LPS

My dissertation tracks the development of London's built environment through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, identifying the shared conceptual and narrative techniques employed in building literature (construction manuals, architectural treatises, and urban improvement tracts) and in literature about buildings (plays, poems, and novels) to discuss the evolution, dissemination, and significance of contemporary debates over urban expansion, urban planning, and spatiality. This study seeks to establish a benchmark on the perceptions of pre-service teachers (interns) in order to understand the factors influencing successful teaching of disabled students in the general education classroom. With the extensive body of research that indicates general educators request more training to teach disabled students, this study begins with four interns and generates information about the effects of a specific technique designed for teaching learning disabled students and observes the interns' perceptions as they teach learning disabled students. Research examining the relation between trauma and psychopathology has contributed to the identification of individuals who, following exposure to various potentially traumatic events (e.g., domestic violence, rape), may be at high risk for post-trauma difficulties (e.g., sleep disturbance, heightened displays of hypervigilant behavior). However, the validity of the definitional characteristics of trauma has not adequately been explored. For instance, few studies have targeted the extent to which reports of perceived life threat, injury, or peritraumatic responses of “horror,” “fear,” and “helplessness” are associated with various forms of trauma-relevant responding. A solvent extraction technique for removing mineral matter, including the inorganic sulfur, from coal has been developed by the Department of Chemical Engineering at WVU. The extraction is preformed at mild conditions (202°C and atmospheric pressure) using the solvent N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone (NMP). The waterflood performance of the dual five-spot pilot project in the Stringtown oil field, situated in West Virginia, has been studied. A numerical simulator, called BOAST98, was used for the simulation purposes, after developing a reservoir description.;The producing horizon in the field is the Upper Devonian Gordon sandstone, which is characterized by severe heterogeneity due to the depositional environment. Using available core and log data and geological analysis, a reservoir characterization study was done. Opacity and emission data were collected from heavy-duty diesel engines exercised through snap-acceleration tests and transient chassis dynamometer tests. Emission data were gathered using the West Virginia University (WVU) Transportable Heavy Duty Vehicle Emission Testing Laboratories (THDVETL) and opacity data were collected from two opacity meters; the Wager 650CP full flow opacity meter and the Bosch RT 100 partial flow opacimeter. Results showed that the Bosch peak opacity readings were consistently higher than the Wager peak opacity readings, and both meters showed little correlation with filter-captured particulate matter (PM). Bed experiments were conducted to treat acid mine drainage with Weirton steel slag which contained 72.22% as Ca(OH)2 equivalent. The Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) sample was obtained from the T&T site located in northern West Virginia. The pH of the solution was 2.56 and the iron content was 89 ppm. The bed was constructed with tin-coated aluminum sheets and was 11&feet;8-1/4&inches; long, 2&inches; wide and 2&inches; high. Evidence For A Systemic Embryotoxic Effect Of Early Luteal Regression In The Ewe, Beth Alyson Costine

Experiments were performed to determine if a short-lived corpus luteum was embryotoxic in ewes given supplemental progesterone and the route of transfer of embryotoxic products. Mated ewes were lutectomized or sham lutectomized on day 4 after estrus. Following surgery, ewes received saline or PGF 2alpha through days 6 or 7. Pregnancy rate was reduced after treatment with PGF2alpha (P < 0.001) compared to controls and was increased in PGF2alpha-treated ewes by lutectomy (P < 0.05). Mated ewes with bilateral ovulations were unilaterally lutectomized, and each uterine horn was ligated to eliminate intercornual flow on day 4 after estrus. Treatment with PGF2alpha on day 5 through 8 reduced pregnancy rates (P < 0.01), but embryonic survival did not differ in the uterine horns ipsilateral or contralateral to the regressing CL. The regressing CL is embryotoxic in progesterone-supplemented ewes, and embryotoxic luteal products have been shown to act by non-local pathways.

A study was needed to determine the extent to which subjective norms, attitudes, beliefs, Body Mass Index, and self esteem were associated with body image behaviors. The examination of aquatic environments for bacterial indicator organisms has proven to be a useful and well-established practice for the purpose of monitoring microbiological water quality. An ideal indicator of fecal pollution should be present in sufficient density to allow detection, present simultaneous with pathogen(s), incapable of aftergrowth in external aquatic environments, easy to enumerate, and exclusively of fecal origin. Unfortunately, none of the indicator organisms presently in use today meet all of these requirements. The encoding of vibrotactile pitch by neurons of the somatosensory system has been investigated at many levels of the neuraxis. These studies, however, have not extended to the spinal dorsal horn, which is known to process low threshold mechanoreceptive input. The studies presented here were designed to assess the possible role of the dorsal horn in the encoding of vibrotactile pitch. To accomplish this task, dorsal horn single unit extracellular recordings were obtained during periodic electrical and sinusoidal mechanical stimulation of their receptive fields. This dissertation examined roles of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, of which Glomus clarum is the primary species, in broomsedge (Andropogon virginicus) plants under limited Pi and elevated Al conditions in four studies. The inoculum originated from an acidic coal-mining site in Morgantown, WV. The inoculum of Glomus clarum from INVAM collection, which originated from an alkaline coal-mining site in WV, was also used in two of the studies. This dissertation revolves around Alexander von Humboldt's research on Indian origins. Humboldt conducted investigations on Indians during his precedent-setting scientific expedition to Meso- and South America during the years 1799--1804. Officially sponsored by the Spanish crown, the main purposes for this expedition were twofold: to examine, evaluate, and discredit Buffon's "degeneracy" claims about America and its inhabitants, and to gather empirical evidence on geography, climate, flora, fauna, and the indigenous cultures. In response to elevated serosal or mucosal tonicity, guinea-pig tracheal epithelium releases the non-nitric oxide, non-prostanoid, epithelium-derived relaxing factor (EpDRF), which subsequently diffuses to the underlying airway smooth muscle to initiate relaxation. Hypertonicity-induced smooth muscle relaxation via EpDRF involves epithelial Na+ and Cl- channels and is preceded by a depolarization of the transepithelial potential difference (Vms). Varroa destructor Anderson and Trueman is the most serious pest of the honey bee Apis mellifera L. Varroa mites transmit several viruses, bacteria and fungi to the bees, which results in a condition called parasitic mite syndrome. There are no completely reliable treatments available to control the mite. Fifty-one beehives were artificially infested with varroa mites by using three different methods. Observations on mite population growth during three infestation attempts were made. All colonies were inspected for the presence of the small hive beetle, Aethina tumida Murray, no beetles were found. Thirty-five colonies were used to establish the efficacy of …

The purpose of this investigation is to identify the differences in groups of high school students' achievement, attendance, and attitude as they move from a traditional schedule to a modified 4 x 4 block schedule. The population for this study consisted of all 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students at a high school during the 1998--1999 school year. There were four samples taken from this population, the first, second, third, and fourth quartiles of students. A survey questionnaire was used to determine student attitude.
