The Influence Of Supervision Training On Supervisor Self-Efficacy Among Doctoral Interns At University Counseling Centers., Sarah Jane Haley
The Influence Of Supervision Training On Supervisor Self-Efficacy Among Doctoral Interns At University Counseling Centers., Sarah Jane Haley
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A group of 145 clinical and counseling psychology doctoral students interning at APA-accredited university counseling center sites completed the Supervision Self-efficacy Questionnaire (SSQ) to determine differences in supervisor self-efficacy among different supervision training groups (e.g. no doctoral supervision course, a didactic supervision course, or a didactic-practicum supervision course) during their doctoral training. The SSQ was developed for this study; it was adapted from The Supervisory Focus and Style Questionnaire (SFSQ) (Yager, Wilson, Brewer & Kinnetz, 1989), which is based on Bernard's (1997) discrimination model of supervision. A one-way, between-subjects ANOVA found no significant differences in overall supervisor self-efficacy among the …
Controllability And Anxious Responding: Experimental Evaluation Using 20% Carbon Dioxide-Enriched Air., Michael J. Zvolensky
Controllability And Anxious Responding: Experimental Evaluation Using 20% Carbon Dioxide-Enriched Air., Michael J. Zvolensky
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Although emotional control maintains a central role in contemporary models of anxiety pathology, particularly panic disorder, there is little understanding about the ways in which specific control processes alter anxiety-related responding. In the present study, offset control over eight 20% carbon dioxide-enriched air administrations was experimentally manipulated in a large nonclinical population (n = 96) varying in anxiety sensitivity (high or low) and gender. Dependent measures included self-reported anxiety, affective reports of valence, arousal, emotional control, and physiological indices of heart rate and skin conductance. High anxiety sensitive participants who lacked offset control reported significantly greater elevations in self-reported anxiety, …
Departure: A Novella And Other Stories., William Matthew Carter
Departure: A Novella And Other Stories., William Matthew Carter
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Departure: A Novella and Other Stories is my master’s thesis written during the fall semester of 2000. The novella and two of the stories are original works created during this time. The remaining stories were written during various fiction workshops. The stories and novella all deal with individuals coming to the precipice of a major experience in their lives. My work deals with the psychological or worldly concerns these characters must ponder in deciding whether to withdraw, act, or leap from their precipice. Some themes I explore in this work as a whole include addictions, homelessness, death, and physical, mental, …
The Relationship Of Interviewer's Communication Behaviors And Applicant's Evaluation Of The Interviewer., Seft George Hunter
The Relationship Of Interviewer's Communication Behaviors And Applicant's Evaluation Of The Interviewer., Seft George Hunter
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The present study sought to explain the nature of the relationship between interviewers’ communication behavior (willingness to communicate, self-perceived communication competence, and socio-communicative style) and applicants’ perception of credibility (competence, trustworthiness, and goodwill), general attitude toward the interviewer and belief that the interviewer should continue interviewing for her/his company. Results indicated that: (1) there was a significant positive relationship between perceived WTC, competence, goodwill, trustworthiness, general attitude toward the interviewer, and belief that the interviewer should continue interviewing for her/his organization; (2) perceived communication competence was positively correlated with competence, goodwill, trustworthiness, general attitude toward the interviewer, and belief that …
The Phenomenological Lived Experience Of Rheumatoid Arthritis., Monica Lena Iaquinta
The Phenomenological Lived Experience Of Rheumatoid Arthritis., Monica Lena Iaquinta
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Previous qualitative studies about the lived experience of persons with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have yielded common themes, such as becoming aware, seeking help, learning to live with the disease, and uncertainty (Brown & Williams, 1995; Ryan, 1996; Shaul, 1995, 1997; Yoshida, 1996). Gaps identified included lack of personalized guidance and support from health care providers, gender differences, and the active role of the patient in managing the disease (Brown & Williams, 1995; Ryan, 1996; Shaul 1995, 1997). This study addressed two of the three gaps previously mentioned: (a) personalized nursing care, and (b) patient as active manager of the disease. …
Defining Environmental Theology: Content Analysis Of Associated Literature., Robert J. Jacobus
Defining Environmental Theology: Content Analysis Of Associated Literature., Robert J. Jacobus
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Environmental theology is a term used often by religious communities describing theological doctrines concerning the relationship of deity and ethical conduct to the environment. After an extensive literature search, an operational or declarative definition for environmental theology was not discovered. The objectives of this study were to establish an explicit and scholarly definition of environmental theology and introduce deoview as a descriptor associated with the term. People have and will continue to act according to their belief systems: this paper has value in understanding beliefs, ethics, and behavior of people and people groups.
An Examination Of The Role Of Cognitive Readiness And Self-Efficacy In Parenting Stress And Coping., Ellen Winifred Leen
An Examination Of The Role Of Cognitive Readiness And Self-Efficacy In Parenting Stress And Coping., Ellen Winifred Leen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cognitive readiness and self-efficacy are similar in that they can be thought of as components of the secondary appraisal process of stress and coping, and each construct includes parental knowledge. We examined self-efficacy and cognitive readiness as they relate to processes of stress and coping, expecting that overlap between the constructs would be accounted for by the role of knowledge. Sixty mothers of toddlers completed questionnaire packets. Our data revealed that, while distinct, cognitive readiness and maternal self-efficacy relate in similar manners to problem-focused coping, and that relation was mediated by stress. This finding suggests that cognitive readiness and self-efficacy …
Vocabulary Cards As A Strategy For Vocabulary Acquisition Of English As A Second Language: The Learners' Perspectives., Maria Teresa Barbosa Das Neves
Vocabulary Cards As A Strategy For Vocabulary Acquisition Of English As A Second Language: The Learners' Perspectives., Maria Teresa Barbosa Das Neves
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The use of vocabulary cards has been advocated by various authors (Gairns and Redman, 1986; McCarthy, 1990; Schmitt and Schmitt, 1995; Hopkins and Bean, 1997) as a strategy to enhance vocabulary acquisition in both first language and second language acquisition. However, there has not been much focus on the students’ perspectives of this strategy. The present study examines the learners’ perspectives of the use of vocabulary cards as a vocabulary learning strategy with special emphasis given to the use of drawing as a strategy. Data were collected via a questionnaire, in class observation and interviews with both learners and instructors. …
A Comparison Of The Instructional Effectiveness Of Intensive And Semester-Length Courses., Marc C. Seamon
A Comparison Of The Instructional Effectiveness Of Intensive And Semester-Length Courses., Marc C. Seamon
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A broad research literature base on the instructional effectiveness of intensive-format courses often finds the intensive courses equal or superior to semester-length versions, but many of the studies from which those conclusions are drawn were theoretically or methodologically flawed. This examination of student characteristics and instructional effectiveness in one matched pair of educational psychology classes found that students in the intensive version of the course performed significantly better than students in the semester-length course on posttests of content and questions tapping higher-order learning. Despite indications of better learning in the intensive-course group, the two groups of students did not differ …

The participants for this study were drawn from a sample population of 177 individuals from three states (Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia) who actively participated as volunteers. The sample participants were active volunteers in six different organizations that assisted hospital patients, underprivileged or at-risk youth, church related concerns, schools, and other miscellaneous services. Answers to the research questions proposed in this study offered a start …
Student Preceptions Of Teacher Violations Of Expected Verbal And Nonverbal Immediate Behaviors., Amy M. Denson
Student Preceptions Of Teacher Violations Of Expected Verbal And Nonverbal Immediate Behaviors., Amy M. Denson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study examined student expectations of teacher behavior and how violations of those expectations are evaluated by students. The purpose of this research was to determine whether or not students hold certain expectations about their teachers and if so, which types of behaviors were expected or not expected of classroom teachers. Students were asked to complete the Immediacy Expectation Scale (IES) to determine if teachers were expected to use immediate behaviors and also to determine if teachers were expected to not misbehave. Students were further asked to read four scenarios that manipulated teachers as high or low in immediacy and …
Object-Oriented Expert System Design: Texpert., Maryam Farmani
Object-Oriented Expert System Design: Texpert., Maryam Farmani
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Object-Orientation is a powerful approach to managing complexity, which has received widespread attention in the past few years. Object-Oriented Design is based on a small number of basic concepts: object, classes, operations and relationships. Some important relationships are inheritance, message passing, and encapsulation. Different methods and notations have been proposed within this paradigm, and a Unified Modeling Language has been developed based on several of these methods. Most rule-based expert systems are not flexible enough to handle problems that mix logical deductions, rule-based inferences, and procedure execution, but mixed problems are common in modern society. Management decisions, for example, are …
The Relationship Of Motivation And Psychological Skills Of Senior Game Participants To Performance., Keiba Lynn Shaw
The Relationship Of Motivation And Psychological Skills Of Senior Game Participants To Performance., Keiba Lynn Shaw
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Involvement in physical activity and sports in the senior population has been shown within the literature to provide these athletes with improved health status and psychological benefits (McPherson, 1984). To date, few studies have examined psychological factors, such as motivation and psychological skills, in relation to senior athletes' participation in competitive sports. The sport psychology literature does include the measurement of the constructs of motivation and psychological skills via the use of the Athletic Coping Skills Inventory - 28 (ACSI-28) (Smith, Schultz, Smoll, & Ptacek, 1995) and the Sport Motivation Scale (SMS) (Pelletier, Fortier, Vallerand, Tuson, Briere, & Blais, 1995) …
The Effects Of Personality Traits On General Disclosiveness., Aaron Douglas Johnson
The Effects Of Personality Traits On General Disclosiveness., Aaron Douglas Johnson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to examine the potential relationship between an individual’s temperament and her/his general disclosiveness. This study utilized Eysenck’s model of temperament and the Five Factor model of personality to predict an individual’s level of general disclosiveness and the sub-components of disclosiveness. The results indicated that both models were relatively equal predictors of general disclosiveness. Both models were moderately strong predictors of the valence and honesty dimensions of an individual’s disclosiveness. A moderately strong negative correlation between neuroticism and the valence dimension of disclosiveness was established. Finally, psychoticism and three factors (openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness) of …
Exploring Out-Of-Class Communication: The Development And Testing Of A Measure., Jennifer Lee-Ann Knapp
Exploring Out-Of-Class Communication: The Development And Testing Of A Measure., Jennifer Lee-Ann Knapp
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to examine out-of-class communication (OCC) between students and instructors. More specifically, the study was concerned with student immediacy, instructor immediacy, student affect for the course and affect for the instructor, and student motives for communicating with their instructors outside of the classroom. Participants were students enrolled in undergraduate communication classes at two institutions, Canisius College and West Virginia University. 218 participants completed surveys regarding the instructor they talked to the most outside of the classroom (e.g. during office hours, on campus, or around town). Results of the study show that OCC is positively and …
The Relation Of Anxiety Sensitivity And Coping Strategy To Carbon Dioxide-Induced Anxious And Fearful Responding., Adam Peter Spira
The Relation Of Anxiety Sensitivity And Coping Strategy To Carbon Dioxide-Induced Anxious And Fearful Responding., Adam Peter Spira
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The present study examined hypotheses regarding the relations among anxiety sensitivity (AS), coping strategy, and anxious responding to a 10-minute inhalation of 10% CO2-enriched air. Elevated scores on several subscales of the Anxiety Sensitivity Index - Revised (ASI-R) predicted CO2-induced panic symptoms. In addition, avoidant coping strategies were predictive of CO2-induced anxious and fearful responding. A composite of subscales from the COPE Inventory predicted aspects of challenge-induced anxiety that were not predicted by the ASI. Although results support contemporary models of panic disorder, our findings also indicate that AS may not be as important to the development and maintenance of …

An Investigation Of Demographic, Psychosocial And Self-Reported Behavioral Influences On Career Maturity Levels Of College Student-Athletes., Rebecca L. Ahlgren
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Career maturity is operationally defined as the readiness of an individual to make informed, age-appropriate career decisions and cope with career development tasks (King, 1990; Savickas, 1984). The matched sample consisted of a total of 344 participants including college freshmen student-athletes (n = 107), freshmen non-student-athletes (n = 107), senior student-athletes (n = 65), and senior non-student-athletes (n = 65). It was hypothesized that there would be significant, positive relationships between the psychosocial variables of educational involvement (EI), career planning (CP), career decision making self-efficacy (CDMSE), and career locus of control (CLCS), and significant, negative relationships between these measures and …
Matewan Before The Massacre: Politics, Coal, And The Roots Of Conflict In Mingo County, 1793-1920, Rebecca J. Bailey
Matewan Before The Massacre: Politics, Coal, And The Roots Of Conflict In Mingo County, 1793-1920, Rebecca J. Bailey
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
On May 19, 1920, gunshots rang through the streets of Matewan, West Virginia, in an event soon known as the “Matewan Massacre.” Most historians of West Virginia and Appalachia see this event as the beginning of a long series of events known as the second mine wars. This dissertation argues that this event was, rather, the culmination of an even longer series of events that unfolded in Mingo County, dating back at least to the Civil War, and setting the stage for the second mine war. Equally important, while it is outside the scope of this dissertation, the conflicts in …

A Religious Conflict In Education: The King's College Controversy As A Historical Precedent To Separation Of Church And State, 1752-1756., Thomas Edward Carney
A Religious Conflict In Education: The King's College Controversy As A Historical Precedent To Separation Of Church And State, 1752-1756., Thomas Edward Carney
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The King's College controversy (1752-1756) was a battle for control of the first college in colonial New York. The historical experience of the province, from its founding by the Dutch until the 1750s, had generated an expectancy of religious freedom among the religious and ethnically diverse population. These people envisioned a non-sectarian college, but members of the Anglican church under the leadership of the Reverend Samuel Johnson (who would be the first president of the college) moved to exert control over the college. The opponents of the Anglicans, led by William Livingston, carried on an extensive attack on the Anglican …
Generational Factors And Resource Availability: A Study Of The Key Components Of Social Capital Formation., Jeffrey Jay Himes
Generational Factors And Resource Availability: A Study Of The Key Components Of Social Capital Formation., Jeffrey Jay Himes
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In this study, we join the discourse concerning social capital and its formation. Social capital has been identified as a key ingredient to the creation of interconnected community. We theorize that access to resources plays a more prominent role than does membership in a particular age set in the production of engaged and involved community members. In our study, we categorize individuals by age set and resource level and make comparisons between groups and upon individuals among the various (5) indicators of social capital. Our analysis of the Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation data implies that individuals who are resource low …

An Investigation Of Teachers' Temperament And Students' Perceptions Of Teachers: Communication Behavior And Students' Attitudes Toward Teachers., Kristin Marie Valencic
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study examined relationships among the way teachers communicate in the classroom, teachers temperaments, and perceptions of teachers by students. Specifically, the first goal was to determine to what extent a teacher's levels of extraversion, neuroticism, and psychoticism can predict students perceptions of task attraction, immediacy, assertiveness, responsiveness, and credibility. The second goal was to determine the relationships between teacher temperament and teacher evaluations, affective learning, and cognitive learning. Self-report surveys of 52 teachers and 1242 students across seven disciplines at West Virginia University were collected. Instructors received measures of extraversion, neuroticism, and psychoticism. Teachers were asked to rate themselves …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The diet quality of children in today’s society has been a growing concern to health officials. The incidence of childhood obesity is on the rise and with this comes the increased risk of future disease. West Virginia is known to have the highest rate of obesity in the United States, the third highest rate of self-reported hypertension followed by a mortality rate for cardiovascular disease that is 21% higher then the national average, and the fifth highest rate for smoking (Barnette, et al., 1998). Over two-thirds of West Virginia is considered to be a rural area (Barnette et al., 1998) …

Brain Injury Survivors: Effects Of Targeted Family Counseling., Geoffrey Granville Grimm
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The incidence and prevalence of brain injury are on the rise, posing increasingly serious public health and economic threats. Often, brain injury leads to chronic physical and psychological challenges that require survivors and their families to adapt, to minimize disruption of their family relationships, social networks and quality of life. Counseling can help families adapt. This study used counseling intended to optimize family relational patterns, especially patterns that may affect survivors' adaptive social behavior. The method lent itself to a pre-post design that used two sets of standardized measures, and treated each family separately using eight, one-hour counseling sessions. The …

All CAAHEP accredited entry-level undergraduate athletic training education programs were surveyed. Respondents to the survey were program directors and full-time on campus clinical instructors serving in these programs. The Clinical Instructor Behavior Instrument, developed by the researcher, …
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Families Choosing Alternate Management Approaches., Christina Mary Lavorata
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Families Choosing Alternate Management Approaches., Christina Mary Lavorata
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder affects approximately two million American school children by making them distractible and impulsive, and by causing them to have a short attention span in both scholastic and social situations. These characteristics generally result in the students receiving poor marks in academic subjects, being reprimanded frequently, and being labeled as disruptive and difficult to control by both their parents and teachers. Pediatricians and psychiatrists most often prescribe psychostimulant medications to control the syndrome, and this is an effective treatment in sixty to seventy percent of cases. There are questions about the safety of long-term use of medication, …
