Interpretation Of The Tandem Mass Spectrum Of The Novel Psychoactive Substance 5f-App-Pinaca, Px-2, Christopher S. Poulos

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Designer drugs and novel psychoactive substances (NPSs) are continuously entering the black market and causing serious health problems among users. NPSs present an especially difficult challenge to forensic chemists and toxicologists because they are not well characterized and often involve families of structurally related analogs. In crime laboratories, mass spectrometry is commonly used as a part of an analytical scheme to characterize and identify unknown analytes. Towards this end, tandem mass spectra of questioned analytes are often compared to reference spectra of standards that are either collected contemporaneously with the analyte or collected previously and stored in a database. However, …

Meiotic Recombination In Zea Mays And Its Contribution To Genetic Diversity, Jasmine Elizabeth Freeman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Meiotic recombination plays a vital role in shaping genome evolution by introducing genetic diversity necessary for natural selection. Recombination rates exhibit extensive variation within and between species, occurring in specific regions known as hotspots and coldspots along individual chromosomes. Maize, with its well-characterized genome, provides an excellent model for studying the nonrandom pattern of meiotic recombination. While retrotransposon activity contributes to significant intergenic variation in maize inbred lines, the genic space remains conserved in terms of gene order and sequence. To investigate recombination activity in the Bz1/Sh1 region, the maize haplotypes W22 and B73, which share genetic backgrounds but differ …

Use Of Carbonation For Treatment Of Coal Mine Drainage To Increase Limestone Dissolution And Generate Alkalinity, Dietrich Henry Kuhlmann Iv

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Abstract

Use of Carbonation for Treatment of Coal Mine Drainage to Increase Limestone Dissolution and Generate Alkalinity

Dietrich Kuhlmann IV

Anoxic limestone drains (ALDs) are a common component used within passive treatment systems for coal mine drainage (CMD). Contact between limestone aggregate and CMD results in limestone dissolution, producing carbonate alkalinity. Though ALDs are one of the least expensive CMD treatment technologies, alkalinity generation is limited by limestone solubility. This necessitates a long retention time (>12 hours) and sometimes results in net acidic effluent which requires additional alkalinity generation steps downstream. One way to increase calcite dissolution and alkalinity …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

To determine whether a questioned fire is the result of arson or not, forensic chemists will often attempt to extract and identify any ignitable liquid residues present in the fire debris. Forensic chemists use gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to identify ignitable liquids based on similarities between chromatograms of fire debris extracts and those of reference ignitable liquids that have been evaporated (weathered) to different extents. Casework samples often appear to be relatively unweathered (e.g., 40-60%) and conventional wisdom is that the apparent lack of weathering is the result of entrapment; a process by which liquid residues are absorbed into the …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Trajectory determination is a very important part of understanding and reconstructing a shooting scene. Conditions for the scene vary for each crime committed, but the evidence left at the scene required to make a reconstruction remains similar. The job of the examiner is to collect the evidence left at the scene and use that evidence to establish what may have happened during the commission of the crime. There is also important information that an examiner may not be privy to, e.g., the firearm and cartridge used. In this case, the evidence that is present, and other gathered information can …

Localized Delivery Of Gm-Csf In The Regulation Of Breast Tumor Oxygen And Anti-Tumor Immunity Through Macrophages, Nicole E. Mihalik Jan 2023

Localized Delivery Of Gm-Csf In The Regulation Of Breast Tumor Oxygen And Anti-Tumor Immunity Through Macrophages, Nicole E. Mihalik

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

GM-CSF has been employed as an adjuvant to cancer immunotherapies in solid tumors due to its ability to drive immune stimulatory macrophages and other myeloid cells that promote anti-tumor responses. However, GM-CSF does not always exert immune stimulatory effects on myeloid cells, and sometimes even drives immune suppressive phenotypes. GM-CSF effects on myeloid cells and the tumor microenvironment (TME) appear to vary across dosages and even cancer types. However, an optimal dosing regimen for GM-CSF has yet to be determined to-date, and this is further complicated by the fact that GM-CSF is often administered via oncolytic viruses or tumor vaccines …

The Influence Of Instrumental Sources Of Variance On Mass Spectral Comparison Algorithms, Isabel Cristina Galvez Valencia Jan 2023

The Influence Of Instrumental Sources Of Variance On Mass Spectral Comparison Algorithms, Isabel Cristina Galvez Valencia

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Current search algorithms for the identification of substances based only on their electron ionization mass spectra provide the correct compound as their top result approximately 80% of the time. One contributing factor to the ~20% deviation in the first-hit recognition rate is that traditional algorithms work by comparing the unknown spectrum to an ‘ideal’ or consensus spectrum of each reference compound. The inclusion of replicate reference spectra in a database has been shown to improve the probability of ranking the correct identity in the number one position, but the variance in ion abundances caused by different conditions or different instruments …
