Safety Of Front-End Loaders Evaluated By Workload And Performance (Simulator, Subjective Reporting, Physiological, Reaction Time, Vigilance)., Mehran Lotfi Najafabadi
Safety Of Front-End Loaders Evaluated By Workload And Performance (Simulator, Subjective Reporting, Physiological, Reaction Time, Vigilance)., Mehran Lotfi Najafabadi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The safety of front-end loaders should be given the highest priority in research since they have been involved in 27% of fatal accidents and 22.4% of non-fatal accidents in surface mining, second only to trucks. Operator safety was considered to depend on the workload, environmental stressors and the subsequent deterioration in performance. Operator workload intensity was established by analyzing tasks and stressors in each segment of the cycle. Deterioration in performance was measured by increases in reaction time and by frequency of errors. A physical simulator was designed and constructed to generate operational task demands in a controlled laboratory environment. …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the manipulation of the rates of specified teacher behaviors (specific observation followed by reinforcement) on the percentage of ALT-PE of students participating in public school physical education classes. A multi-element research design was employed to observe two classes of fifth grade students during a fifteen day treatment period. There were three levels of the independent variable: high (5.0 sequences of specific observation followed by reinforcement); low (1.0 episode or less of either specific observation or reinforcement); and mixed (5.0 occurrences of specific observation but 1.0 or less of reinforcement). …
Comparison Of Acquisition And Generalization Levels Of Manual Signing With Moderately Retarded Persons (Language, Parent Training)., Cynthia Sue Allen
Comparison Of Acquisition And Generalization Levels Of Manual Signing With Moderately Retarded Persons (Language, Parent Training)., Cynthia Sue Allen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Educators working with mentally retarded and other severely communication-delayed students have begun incorporating sign language into their curriculum to promote language development. In most instances, these methods do not facilitate generalization to the natural environment where the language is actually used. This study investigated whether acquisition of sign language with moderately mentally retarded individuals is attained faster when taught in home settings by the parent or at school by the teacher in a clinical environment. Six students, ages six to twenty, attending a public special education program in central West Virginia served as subjects. All were diagnosed as moderately mentally …
Dissolution Kinetics Of Hydrocortisone Into Polymer Solutions (Steroids)., Nahla Nassar Khoury
Dissolution Kinetics Of Hydrocortisone Into Polymer Solutions (Steroids)., Nahla Nassar Khoury
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A major concern of investigators during the last decade has been the evaluation of the relative therapeutic effectiveness of competitive drug products. The problem of bioavailability is further exaggerated for steroidal drugs formulated as suspensions because of low intrinsic solubility, and the addition of stabilizing ingredients, such as polymers, to the formulations. An in vitro evaluation of the dissolution rate of hydrocortisone alcohol and acetate from constant surface area tablets into dilute polymer solutions was undertaken since dissolution rate is a relevant characteristic concerning therapeutic availability for sparingly soluble drugs. Polymers of varying chemical type and in dilute concentrations, similar …
Structural Design Guidelines For Longwall Panel Layout., Sui-Min Hsiung
Structural Design Guidelines For Longwall Panel Layout., Sui-Min Hsiung
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Successful longwall mining requires a good roof control. A good roof control implies that: (1) no excessive pressue is built up in the face powered supports, and (2) chain pillars are designed in such a way that panel entries are well protected and interactions between adjacent panels are minimized. A clear understanding of strata behavior around longwall panels due to face movement is, therefore, the foremost requirement for achieving better roof control. This dissertation is designed to analyze the effects of strata behavior on longwall panels due to the mining activities. The following topics are studied: (1) the weighting phenomena …
Analysis Of Raw Material Extraction Through Simulation: A Timber Harvesting Example (Forest Engineering, Production Planning, Logging)., Leonard Roy Johnson
Analysis Of Raw Material Extraction Through Simulation: A Timber Harvesting Example (Forest Engineering, Production Planning, Logging)., Leonard Roy Johnson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Raw material extraction processes face problems that differ from those encountered in most production systems. Production steps are often quite simple, but material handling and inprocess inventory are complicated by a constantly changing environment. The factory that delivers raw materials must be mobile and flexible to handle variations that occur in the raw material environment. Techniques used to analyze problems common to factories at fixed locations are often inappropriate for extraction processes. A simulation model of the extraction process can be used to provide input to many production planning steps. It should consist of three components. The production process can …
Multivariable System Identification Coal Gasification Process., Ali Reza Delavari
Multivariable System Identification Coal Gasification Process., Ali Reza Delavari
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Obtaining information on the dynamic behavior of a system or process for ultimate use in control strategies is essential. Identification of a system in real time is divided into two areas, parametric and non-parametric. In the non-parametric method a model is not assumed for the system, while in the parametric method a prior assumption of a given model form with unknown parameters is necessary. The objectives of this research are: (a) Detail studies of various methods of parametric identification in transfer function form, developing and extending some of these methods and a new method for multivariable discrete-time systems. Many criterions …

A greenhouse investigation was conducted with corn and alfalfa to evaluate rock phosphate (rock-P) and fly ash as amendments to ameliorate toxic conditions in three acid mine soils. The extremely acid mine soils from Valley Point (VP), Westover (WO), and Lenox (LX) were each mixed with fly ash at a rate of 0%, 33% or 67%, and with rock-P at a rate of 0, 10, 20 or 40 g/kg soil in a factorial combination. In a corollary experiment, rock-P was replaced with fertilizer consisting of monocalcium phosphate (200 kg P/ha), KNO(,3) and KCl (112 kg/ha), calcium carbonate (225 kg Ca/ha), …
The Influence Of A Thermal Oxide Layer On Short-Term Degradation Of Silicon Mis Solar Cell Output., Abdul Rahman Alamoud
The Influence Of A Thermal Oxide Layer On Short-Term Degradation Of Silicon Mis Solar Cell Output., Abdul Rahman Alamoud
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Metal-semiconductor (Schottky-barrier) solar cells have lower open-circuit voltage than p-n junction solar cells. The open-circuit voltage of a Schottky-barrier solar cell can be increased by the use of an ultrathin oxide layer between the metal and the semiconductor. Fabrication and testing of MIS solar cells with steam-grown oxide layers shows that short-term degradation occurs (within six weeks) and is indicated by lowering maximum power output. Degradation occurs independent of environmental conditions. Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES) depth-profiles show that degradation is due to growth of a metal-oxide layer at the metal-SiO(,2) interface. This process occurs in a few weeks; with high …
A Comparison Of An Active And A Passive Relaxation Procedure For The Management Of General Anxiety (Relaxation, Stress Management, Sensory Awareness)., Jeffrey Alan Knight
A Comparison Of An Active And A Passive Relaxation Procedure For The Management Of General Anxiety (Relaxation, Stress Management, Sensory Awareness)., Jeffrey Alan Knight
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Relaxation training procedures have been used increasingly over the last 20 years as a treatment intervention for generalized anxiety. Treatment of anxiety is often approached from the broader perspective of stress management training using relaxation procedures as components of the treatment protocol. Historically, active relaxation techniques, such as progressive muscle relaxation, have been employed in stress management programs, although passive relaxation techniques, those not requiring muscle tension release, have also proven effective in reducing symptoms of tension and anxiety. The present study was designed to compare the efficacy of a clinically proven, but empirically untested, passive relaxation procedure called Sensory …
World And Being In Wordsworth's "Prelude" (Phenomenology)., James Preston Hissom
World And Being In Wordsworth's "Prelude" (Phenomenology)., James Preston Hissom
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study approaches the problem of the relation of man and nature in William Wordsworth's The Prelude from the phenomenological perspective developed in Martin Heidegger's early work, Being and Time. More specifically, I attempt to work out a detailed comparison between Wordsworth's description of nature as an environing and supporting presence and Heidegger's notion of "world" as an irreducible component of human existence. In contrast to most philosophically oriented critics of The Prelude, who locate Wordsworth's ideas within the metaphysical context of English empiricism or continental transcendentalism and idealism, I argue that the structure of experience presented in ThePrelude actually …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A technique was developed for the determination of total arsenic (As) in soil using differential pulse polarography. Soil samples were digested with a combination of HNO(,3) and H(,2)SO(,4). Total As was determined in M HCl after reduction of As(V) to As(III) with hydrazine sulfate. Soil and fly ash standards were analyzed by this method and agreement within one standard deviation between replicates was obtained. Approximately 99% recovery of As was obtained from spiked soil samples. Differential pulse polarography is also quite useful for the rapid determination of arsenite in solution during studies of As sorption - desorption by soils. A …

Using Preschool Peers To Teach And Facilitate The Generalization Of Decreases In Aggressive Play., Grace R. Kalfus
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The present study examined the effectiveness of a preschool peer mediator to facilitate generalization of social behavior change. Previous research has shown peers to be effective mediators in treatment programs, however, their efficacy as generalization facilitators is less clear. Preschool children observed to play aggressively with toys and speak in an aggressive manner were selected as subjects. The children were divided into two groups of two. The peer tutor did not engage in these aggressive behaviors. Peer tutor training consisted of discussion, role play, modeling, praise, and physical affection. A peer tutoring procedure in which the peer tutor delivered instructions, …
The Widow In Restoration Comedy., Beverly Cardwell Debord
The Widow In Restoration Comedy., Beverly Cardwell Debord
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The widow appears frequently on the Restoration comic stage, and yet, almost without exception, she provokes laughter only at her own expense. In the thirty-eight comedies examined in this study, widows suffer various types of abuse, from witty derision to physical assault. However, in virtually every instance--whether in her treatment by fellow characters or in her depiction by the playwright--the widow's exploitation involves her financial situation. Moreover, this common factor is a key to understanding why widowhood, essentially tragic, became comic during the Restoration. Traditionally an unwelcome reminder of death and the power of sexuality, even before the Restoration widows …

Ion-Exchange Properties Of Chemically And Physically Modified Graphite., Thomas Matthew Matviya
Ion-Exchange Properties Of Chemically And Physically Modified Graphite., Thomas Matthew Matviya
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Organic compounds capable of ion-exchange were adsorbed on granular graphite. The ion-exchange capacity of the graphite modified in this manner was found to be limited to (DBLTURN) 10('-6) eq/g of graphite by the available surface area of the graphite. Acidic surface oxides on the graphite interfered with the determination of the contribution of the adsorbed organic compounds to ion-exchange. An electrically conductive ion-exchange medium was developed by partially oxidizing granular graphite with strong oxidizing agents. The reaction of graphite with K(,2)Cr(,2)O(,7) in concentrated H(,2)SO(,4) was extensively studied. The ion-exchange capacity of the oxidized graphite for H('+) and divalent metal ions …

A Financial Analysis Of Private Liberal Arts Colleges, John Scott Cunningham
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study is an assessment of the financial condition of a consortium of small private liberal arts colleges. Its conceptual framework consists of an ex post facto investigation of audited financial statements utilizing ratio analysis procedures developed by Peat, Marwick, and Mitchell and John Minter Associates to research hierarchical relationships between two sets of ratios: the Balance Sheet Ratios, which describe financial results, and Operating Ratios, which indicate the causes of the results. Intragroup comparisons among the institutions of the East Central College Consortium and intergroup comparisons with two sample groups randomly selected because of geographic proximity to the Consortium …
Coal Mine Productivity Assessment As Influenced By Equipment Reliability And Availability., Francisco Lopez Viray
Coal Mine Productivity Assessment As Influenced By Equipment Reliability And Availability., Francisco Lopez Viray
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Feasible methods, measures and models which can be used to assess the availability of a continuous mine system are developed. The models, based on a simplified representation of room-and-pillar mining, are derived using the principles of Markov processes. A new measure of system reliability and performance, called the penalized availability is defined. This measure can be applied to any process flow system whose output may be derated due to failures of certain components. Three reliability indices which measure coal productivity in terms of equipment reliability and maintainability are defined. These indices are linearly related to the penalized availability by such …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of filmed modeling and distraction techniques in the modification of children's behavior during blood work procedures. Subjects were 48 children between the ages of six and eleven who were referred for this procedure by the Cardiology, Neurology, and Hematology Clinics. While reasons for referral varied, some common reasons included possible heart murmur, possible seizure activity and abnormal blood counts. Prior to their laboratory work, children in the Modeling group viewed a videotape that depicted two children experiencing the blood work procedures. The children's behavior and verbal remarks were characteristic of …
"O Mother, Mother: What Have You Done"?: Shakespeare's Mothers In Relation To Catastrophe., Betty Jeannine Norvell
"O Mother, Mother: What Have You Done"?: Shakespeare's Mothers In Relation To Catastrophe., Betty Jeannine Norvell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
As the title, "O Mother, Mother! What Have You Done"?: Shakespeare's Mothers in Relation to Catastrophe," suggests, this study explores the connection of Shakespeare's mother figures with plot catastrophe. As background procedure, Renaissance thought is studied in terms of its roots in the works of Plato and other Classical Greek writers, and of Augustine and Aquinas and other Medieval writers, particularly in terms of the significance of the concept of chaos and catastrophe, and its antithesis, order. Then Renaissance documents are analyzed to determine Renaissance attitudes toward women, and, in particular, mothers, and their relationship to the social and moral …
Some Aspects Of Fluidized Bed Coal Combustion And Their Effect On Fbc Modeling., Ranga Rao Pattipati
Some Aspects Of Fluidized Bed Coal Combustion And Their Effect On Fbc Modeling., Ranga Rao Pattipati
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Fluidized bed combustion offers a clean and relatively inexpensive method for coal combustion. There are various physical and chemical processes occurring in the fluidized bed combustor, some of which are investigated in this work. Devolatilization and combustion of a single coal char particle, minimum fluidization velocity at high temperatures, fluidization regimes, and SO(,2) release rates in FBC are the areas examined in this work. The mode of release of volatiles can be instantaneous or uniform depending on the relative magnitudes of mixing time and devolatilization time. The burnout time of large coke particles (> 2 mm) can be as high …

Motor Skill Acquisition As A Function Of The Post-Knowledge Of Results Delay Interval And Task Complexity., Jimmy Patrick Timmons
Motor Skill Acquisition As A Function Of The Post-Knowledge Of Results Delay Interval And Task Complexity., Jimmy Patrick Timmons
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Schmidt (1975) and Weinberg, Guy, and Tupper (1964) have expressed the expectation that post-KR delays in simple to complex motor tasks must increase as task complexity increases if the rate of acquisition is to be maintained. This study was an attempt to investigate that prediction. Nine treatment conditions were established by the interaction of three levels of post-KR delay with three levels of task complexity. Volunteer subjects (N = 10 for each treatment condition) were male undergraduate and graduate students at West Virginia University during the summer of 1979. Twenty trials were received by each subject; the first ten were …
