Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic neurobiological condition characterized by developmentally inappropriate attention, impulsivity, and, in some cases, hyperactivity. ADHD is a growing problem in the United States educational system with an estimated 3 to 5 percent of the school-aged population, or approximately 2 million children and adolescents affected. Substantial scientific research has been conducted to examine the effectiveness of stimulant medication as a treatment for ADHD. Little research, however, has been conducted to examine the preparedness of physicians to diagnose, treat, and monitor children with ADHD. This study determined what essential knowledge, attitudes, and skills primary care physicians …
"Out Of The Shambles Of Our History": Irish Women And (Post)Colonial Identity., Kelli Elizabeth Maloy
"Out Of The Shambles Of Our History": Irish Women And (Post)Colonial Identity., Kelli Elizabeth Maloy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Easter Rising of 1916 is often considered to mark the end of the colonial period in the territory now called the Republic of Ireland. Because for centuries preceding the Rising women were aligned with mythological and Christian images that glorified their saintly and maternal “nature,â€it seemed the rising would mark a period during which women would no longer need to represent the motherland and might assume some degree of autonomy in Irish society. The reality, however, was that independence in the republic prompted a state-sanctioned preoccupation with regeneration of the nation and a system whereby the national subject was …

Immunotoxic Effects Of Pulmonary Exposure To Isobutyl Nitrite In The Murine Macrophage., Avijit Roy
Immunotoxic Effects Of Pulmonary Exposure To Isobutyl Nitrite In The Murine Macrophage., Avijit Roy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Isobutyl nitrite (IBN) is a volatile compound that causes vasodilation and smooth muscle relaxation. A history of abuse of this compound by HIV positive homosexual men has been associated with an increased incidence of Kaposi's Sarcoma, a tumor whose growth is responsive to cytokines. Previous work with the murine pulmonary model has demonstrated that exposure to IBN can suppress cytotoxic T cell ability, reduce the production of nitric oxide by macrophages and impair their ability to kill P815 targets. The overall aim of this project was to further characterize the nature of the immune alteration in the murine macrophages. In …

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Studies Of Electron And Hole Traps Related To Optical Damage In Ktiopo(4)., Scott Douglas Setzler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and electron-nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) studies have been performed on flux-grown and hydrothermal-grown potassium titanyl phosphate (KTiOPO{dollar}\\sb4{dollar}, or KTP) crystals. Four radiation-induced tapped-electron centers have been identified and a complete angular dependence analysis has provided spin-Hamiltonian parameters for each center. Either near-band-edge laser light (355-nm third-harmonic output from a Nd:YAG laser) or 60-kV x-rays can be used to produce the defects. These electron traps are perturbed Ti{dollar}\\sp{lcub}3+{rcub}{dollar} ions, where the perturbation acts to stabilize the electron. Hyperfine parameters have been used to deduce that protons (in the form of OH-ions) act to stabilize the electron in …

The Relationships Among Teacher Characteristics, Student Learning, And Teacher Evaluation., Jason John Teven
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The past several decades have witnessed an increasing concern with the role of communication in the instructional environment. The primary purpose of this research was to identify the specific teacher characteristics or behavior patterns which communicate caring to students and to identify those teacher characteristics or "misbehaviors" that disrupt the students' perceptions of caring. This investigation demonstrated that teacher immediacy and the teacher traits of socio-communicator style (e.g., assertiveness and responsiveness) and tolerance for disagreement have a significant, positive relationships with students' perceptions of teacher caring, learning outcomes, and the way students evaluate those teachers. Respondents in the study were …

Evaluation Of The Flow Theory In Whitewater Kayaking., Christopher Douglass Jones
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The validation of the flow theory in an on-site whitewater setting is examined. A-priori hypotheses emphasized 3 concerns: (1) the relationship between a four channel model of flow and specific levels of flow indicators, (2) differences in the explanatory power of the four channel model and an original model of flow, and (3) the relationship between river difficulty and the frequencies of four channels (flow, anxiety, apathy, and boredom). On-site experiences of 52 whitewater kayakers were assessed with a series of single page questionnaires administered in the Cheat River Canyon in West Virginia. Sampling techniques involved a modification of the …

Influence Of Polymeric Additives On The Melting And Crystallization Behavior Of Nylon 6,6., Parvinder Singh Walia
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The goal of this research was to find polymeric additives that would significantly decrease the rate of crystallization in nylon 6,6, in order to enhance mechanical properties indirectly. Since miscibility was essential, different classes of materials considered included amorphous and semi-crystalline nylons, and other polymers known to be compatible with polyamides. These additives were blended with nylon 6,6 using solution and melt blending techniques. The change in thermal behavior of the blends was evaluated using data obtained with a Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) and Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analyzer (DMTA). Reduction in the crystallization temperature (T{dollar}\\sb{lcub}\\rm c{rcub}){dollar} during a non-isothermal DSC …
The Relations Among Daily Minor Stressors, Solicitous Spousal Responding, And Illness Behavior In Type Ii Diabetes Mellitus., James Curtis Findley
The Relations Among Daily Minor Stressors, Solicitous Spousal Responding, And Illness Behavior In Type Ii Diabetes Mellitus., James Curtis Findley
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Although persons with Diabetes Mellitus (DM) report more physical symptoms than do relatively healthy persons, the relation between blood glucose (BG) and symptom reporting in persons with DM has been shown to be idiosyncratic. Even in subjects that demonstrate and significant BG/symptom relation, the effect is not stable over time (i.e., greater than eight months). Daily minor stressors and solicitous spousal responding have been shown to be related to symptom reporting in other chronic illness populations and might account for variance in symptom reporting by persons with DM. Thirty-three participants with Type II DM monitored BG, physical activity, and stress …
Innovative Ultrasonic Methodology For Fatigue Crack Detection In Steel Members., Reynold Franklin
Innovative Ultrasonic Methodology For Fatigue Crack Detection In Steel Members., Reynold Franklin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The primary objective of nondestructive testing and evaluation in metallic structural members is to identify and quantify damages and predict member behavior. In this aspect detection of fatigue cracks is of great importance. Steel bridge members are subjected to heavy loads and large number of cyclic stresses. Weak zones, such as near a weld, may eventually develop fatigue cracks. Currently, a major obstacle for ultrasonic field inspection for detecting fatigue cracks is surface preparation (removal of paint and rust). This research describes the development of an innovative ultrasonic testing methodology to detect fatigue cracks in uncoated, painted, and rusted steel …
Investigative Interviewing With Children: Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of A Training Program For Child Protective Service Workers., Kurt Andrew Freeman
Investigative Interviewing With Children: Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of A Training Program For Child Protective Service Workers., Kurt Andrew Freeman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Conducting investigative interviews with children who were allegedly sexually abused is perhaps one of the most challenging aspects of child protective service (CPS) workers' jobs. Previous research suggests that training workshops on investigative interviewing conducted with front-line workers, such as police officers and CPS workers, may result in improved knowledge about appropriate strategies to use. However, limited research has addressed whether such trainings result in improvements in actual interviewing skills. The present investigation assessed the impact of a six-hour training workshop on CPS workers' knowledge about and performance during investigative interviews. Results suggest that the training impacted participants' knowledge on …

Concurrently, in a separate computer class, the students received instruction which focused on the use of …
Late Quaternary Fluvial Stratigraphy Of The St. Albans Archeologic Site (46ka27), West Virginia, Courtney Andreas Nugent
Late Quaternary Fluvial Stratigraphy Of The St. Albans Archeologic Site (46ka27), West Virginia, Courtney Andreas Nugent
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The St. Albans archeologic site, recognized since 1964, occurs on a low terrace of the Kanawha River. Stratigraphic and magnetic susceptibility studies at the site have lead to the development of a model for predicting artifact recovery potential that is important to planning future excavations at the site.;Charcoal fragments, reddened soils and fire-cracked rocks indicate that most high magnetic susceptibility readings are produced by fire. The association of artifacts in many of these high magnetically susceptible sediments indicates they are cultural fire hearths. When executed early, magnetic susceptibilities studies should help archeologists.;The waxing and waning of late Pleistocene glaciation caused …
The Relation Between Cardiovascular Reactivity To Stress And Family History Of Hypertension: Examination Of Overt And Covert Responses To Stressors., Nicole Lynn Frazer
The Relation Between Cardiovascular Reactivity To Stress And Family History Of Hypertension: Examination Of Overt And Covert Responses To Stressors., Nicole Lynn Frazer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Research has suggested that cardiovascular reactivity to stress may be a risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disorders (Manuck, 1994). Offspring of hypertensives have been hypothesized to be at greater risk for developing cardiovascular disorders through these exaggerated cardiovascular responses to stress, and therefore have been the focus of much research. Little empirical attention has been paid to the relation between other overt (e.g., verbal behavior) or covert (e.g., self-reported anger) responses exhibited during the laboratory session and family history status or cardiovascular reactivity to stress. The purpose of this investigation was to examine differences in overt and covert …
The Effects Of Reading Social Anxiety Words On Anxious Responding., Carrie Lynn Masia
The Effects Of Reading Social Anxiety Words On Anxious Responding., Carrie Lynn Masia
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Two studies were conducted to determine if repeated exposure to social anxiety words decreased anxious responding in individuals diagnosed with social phobia. In the first study, four participants were asked to read words aloud, and in the second study, three participants were asked to read words silently. Single-subject methodology, using an alternating treatments design, was utilized. Anxious responding was assessed via Stroop test color-naming time of social and neutral words, word-reading time of social and neutral words, heart rate during word-reading and color-naming, and self-reports of distress. Results indicate that repeated reading of social anxiety words reduces anxious responding, and …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Electrochromatography (CEC), a hybrid of LC and CE, is a recent and fairly unexplored method of analysis, but has already been shown to be a very efficient separation technique. This thesis comprises a study of the Knox-Parcher effect and its influence upon CEC. The Knox-Parcher effect, which has been established in GC and LC, describes the dependence of reduced plate height, h, on the ratio, r, established by the ratio of the channel diameter (dc) to the particle diameter (dp). This study was conducted using particles with a diameter of 60 mm and capillaries having inner diameters ranging from 246 …
The Influence Of Seventeenth-Century Anglo-Saxon Scholarship On Milton's Prose, "The History Of Britain", And "Paradise Lost"., Matthew B. Mccrady
The Influence Of Seventeenth-Century Anglo-Saxon Scholarship On Milton's Prose, "The History Of Britain", And "Paradise Lost"., Matthew B. Mccrady
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Was John Milton’s prose and poetry in any way influenced by seventeenth-century Anglo-Saxon scholarship? The answer is "yes." Just as John Milton was in dialogue with radical seventeenth-century political groups such as the Levellers and Diggers—a ground-breaking thesis first proposed by Christopher Hill—so Milton was also in dialogue with those academics and antiquarians researching and, in some ways, reinventing the Anglo-Saxon past. Through a close reading of Milton’s first Defense and other selected prose works, as well as the History of Britain and Paradise Lost, this thesis proposes to reexamine an old issue that has never been satisfactorily explicated. In …

Constructing Identities And Defining The Nation: Germany Since 1949., Frank Anthony Allevato
Constructing Identities And Defining The Nation: Germany Since 1949., Frank Anthony Allevato
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Not long after Germans began the historic task of dismantling the Berlin Wall in 1989, their country was again reunited after forty-five years of division. For the second time in less than a century, a majority of Europe’s Germans were brought together under the banner of a single political sovereignty. As the enlarged Federal Republic psychologically reorients and physically reconstructs itself, the event is likely to have continued European and worldwide implications. Understanding the new Germany’s internal development and its evolving self-perceptions is to conceive of the country’s role now and in the years ahead; central to understanding Germany today …
