Mixed-Mesophytic Forest Understory Communities And Edge Effect: The Role Of Canopy Gaps In Edge Composition And Structure., Cedric Edwin Landenberger Jan 1999

Mixed-Mesophytic Forest Understory Communities And Edge Effect: The Role Of Canopy Gaps In Edge Composition And Structure., Cedric Edwin Landenberger

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Temperate forest canopy gaps are generally characterized as spatially discrete patches whose biophysical properties are a function of gap size and age acting in conjunction with subcanopy composition and structure. The surrounding gap environment is rarely considered, although there are reasons to suggest that gaps may be influenced by adjacent canopy openings such as agricultural fields, roads, and timber harvests. Experimental canopy gaps (∼75 m 2) were created adjacent to silvicultural clearcuts (∼5 ha.) in second-growth mixed-mesophytic forest to better understand the effect of clearcutting on adjacent canopy gap understones. Gaps were created on west- and south-facing edges at 15 …

Labor For Bread: The Exploitation Of Polish Labor In The Soviet Union During World War Ii., Jean C. Bingle

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the summer of 1939, the Soviet Union signed a nonaggression pact with Nazi Germany, which not only reassured Stalin of Russia's security, but also sealed the fate of hundreds of thousands of unsuspecting inhabitants of Poland's eastern provinces who were subsequently deported to the Soviet interior between 1939 and 1941. Beginning with community leaders and their families, the arrests and deportations ultimately permeated the entire social hierarchy. The exact number of those deported will never be known, but the Polish survivors from the depths of the GULag do provide valuable information about the conditions under which they lived and …

Acoustic Signal During Hydraulic Fracturing., Jeremy Scott King Jan 1999

Acoustic Signal During Hydraulic Fracturing., Jeremy Scott King

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Well performance analysis using pressure/time data are historically collected over a time span of minutes and hours. Such pressure/time performance is controlled by Darcy type fluid seepage, and used to define the formation boundaries and permeability. A different pressure transient is used to determine the acoustic characteristics of the open flow passages of a well. A pressure transient can be induced by a sudden change in flow rate. The wave travels towards the casing perforations and back to the surface. The reflected signal contains the piping and fracture acoustic signature within it. The transient signal lasts less than a minute. …

The Effects Of Land-Use History On Plant Species Diversity And Abundance In Dambo Wetlands In Zimbabwe., Fortune Feresu Shonhiwa

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Land-use history in Zimbabwe has caused dramatic differences in erosion severity between Commercial and Communal Lands. High population numbers have been found to be positively correlated with the extent of eroded area in Communal Lands. Dambo wetlands are particularly vulnerable to this population pressure as they are isolated wet areas supporting plant growth during the six to eight months of the dry season. In Zimbabwe, they cover 1.3 million hectares of the country. This study examines the plant composition and seed bank of these wetlands and compares vegetation in dambos with contrasting land-use histories, communal versus commercial. Communal Lands are …

Texpert: Expert System For Evaluating Product Design For Worker's Safety And Health., Vikram V. Venneti Jan 1999

Texpert: Expert System For Evaluating Product Design For Worker's Safety And Health., Vikram V. Venneti

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Today, there is an increasing emphasis on the safety and health of a worker. Optimum resources are invested to ensure worker's safety. Most of the regulations, and other measures as suggested by NIOSH, OSHA and other leading safety organizations concentrate towards the steps that a worker needs to take to use a product safely. Instead, if the product itself is designed to be safe, and if the manufacturer of the product knows about the product's safety before usage, it would reduce a great deal of wastage of resources. This research is an attempt to implement the above ideology. The objective …

The program’s mission was to help bridge the gap for students who have the academic potential but not the academic credentials to be admitted. This study investigated the utility of the STEP program in regards to retention rate and psychosocial development of first-year at-risk students. Results indicated that participation in the STEP …

A Study Of Protein Interactions By Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry., Weiling Zhang Jan 1999

A Study Of Protein Interactions By Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry., Weiling Zhang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry is gaining recognition as a powerful tool for the study of proteins. It is a “soft” ionization source, which permits the preservation of noncovalent interactions prevailing in biological systems. It is able to form multiply charged ions, which facilitates analyses of very large molecules. The change of the protein conformations can be investigated by charge state distribution shifts in ESI-MS. The noncovalent interactions of proteins with other molecules can also be studied by ESI-MS because these interactions often change the shape of proteins. I examined the effect of various operating parameters on shape of the ESI-MS …

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance And Electron Nuclear Double Resonance Study Of Niobium(5+) Hole Center In Cadmium Tungstate., Catalina I. Dorin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR ) and electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) techniques have been used to characterize the Nb5+ hole center in CdWO4 In this center , a hole in trapped on an oxygen ion adjacent to a Nb5+ ion substituting for a W6+ Hyperfine and nuclear quadrupole interactions associated with the niobium nucleus (100% abundant, I = 9/2) dominate the EPR spectra. The measured g matrix confirms that Nb5+hole center is indeed a holelike defect. The ENDOR results provided a direct measure of the gNβN value for the nucleus responsible for the hyperfine, and served to confirm that a …

An Exploration Of The Relationship Of Nonverbal Aggression With Verbal Aggression, Nonverbal Immediacy Assertiveness, And Responsiveness., Jamie Leigh Geiser Jan 1999

An Exploration Of The Relationship Of Nonverbal Aggression With Verbal Aggression, Nonverbal Immediacy Assertiveness, And Responsiveness., Jamie Leigh Geiser

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A need to study the nonverbal aspect of aggression is argued because the inclusion of nonverbal aspects within the original conception of verbal aggression suggests that the role of nonverbal cues in the expression of aggression might be stronger than originally thought. To test the potential relationship of nonverbal aggression with other personality variables, a 30-item scale of nonverbal aggression was developed. A study of 179 college students is reported which sought to investigate the possibility that nonverbal aggression is related to verbal aggression, nonverbal immediacy, assertiveness, and responsiveness. Gender differences in nonverbal aggression was also investigated. The results revealed …

This study included 162 participants from a large Mid-Atlantic University. The results showed that fathers will gain less compliance from their college-aged sons using verbally aggressive messages. Furthermore, sons will not have a positive affect towards their father when verbal …

The Use Of Analog Functional Analysis In Assessing The Function Of Mealtime Behavior Problems., Peter Anthony Girolami Jan 1999

The Use Of Analog Functional Analysis In Assessing The Function Of Mealtime Behavior Problems., Peter Anthony Girolami

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Some children exhibit disruptive and self-injurious behavior during mealtime, limiting the positive interaction between care giver and child, and decreasing the probability of a nutritionally adequate intake. Research has demonstrated the utility of functional analysis (i.e., identifying controlling variables of problem behavior) for the development of effective non-aversive interventions for a variety of behavior problems. This study applied the methodology of an analog experimental (functional) analysis of behavior to the specific interaction between care givers and children exhibiting mealtime behavior problems. Five conditions that resemble feeding situations were constructed to identify contingent relations between the mealtime behavior problems exhibited by …

The Effects Of Thinning Intensity On Snag And Cavity Tree Abundance In An Appalachian Hardwood Stand., Aaron T. Graves

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Traditional silvicultural practices focus on manipulating forest vegetation structure for commodity production. Structural features important to wildlife, such as snags, trees with decay, and cavity trees are also affected by forest management, but these effects are often not quantified. This study measured the effects of different thinning intensities (45, 60, 75% residual relative densities, and uncut controls), heartwood decay resistance (resistant, slight), and time of formation (pre or post-treatment) on the density, basal area, and volume of snags and decayed wood in an Appalachian hardwood stand. Cavity trees considered useful to local woodpecker species were also measured. Results indicated that …
