Aspects Of Attention That Affect Compliance And General Behavior In Disruptive And Typical Children, Holly Ann Filcheck May 2000

Aspects Of Attention That Affect Compliance And General Behavior In Disruptive And Typical Children, Holly Ann Filcheck

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Currently, there is some controversy concerning whether praise affects compliance and behavior other than compliance (i.e., general behavior) in children with disruptive behaviors. It is unclear whether it is praise or other aspects of general attention, such as descriptions and enthusiasm, that influences children's behavior. The current study examined the effects of enthusiastic praise, non-enthusiastic praise, and non-enthusiastic description on child compliance (measured by the Compliance Test) and general behavior (measured by the Marble-in-the-Hole Game) in 15 children with disruptive behavior problems and 15 typical children. Results indicated that the participants had significantly higher rates of compliance in the non-enthusiastic …

Production Of Urban Space In Kenya: Central-Local Government Power Relations In Mediating Space In Athi River Town., Francis Tama Koti

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Centrally controlled political and economic systems are popular among Third World countries. They however, become problematic particularly in rapidly growing urban areas where different forces compete for scarce resources, hence calling for an understanding of the nature of the relationships between the different forces that produce the urban environment. In Kenya, the basic assumption is that urban space is mediated by the local state. The author uses Athi River town, as a case study, through which survey questionnaires and informal interviews are conducted with key personnel of Mavoko Municipal Council on one hand, and central government ministries operating within the …

The Effects Of Acceptance Versus Control Contexts On Avoidance Of 7% Carbon Dioxide-Enriched Air In Highly Anxious Females., Michelle P. Heffner

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Avoidance is a core problem among patients with panic and other anxiety disorders that is often targeted in treatment. The present study compared the effects of acceptance versus control therapeutic contexts on avoidance of an aversive interoceptive stimulus in a controlled laboratory setting. Previous research has demonstrated the ironic and paradoxical effects of control-oriented strategies. Therefore, it was hypothesized that acceptance strategies will be more useful in the reduction of avoidance. Sixty high-anxious females were exposed to carbon-dioxide enriched air, an anxiety analogue, and assigned to either a control-context, acceptance-context, or no instruction condition. The context of acceptance was explained …

LKR and LOX were measured in homogenates prepared from liver, kidney, pancreas, heart, brain, lungs, spleen, muscle, and intestine. LKR activities were 1000-fold LOX. LKR activity was highest in liver and intestine each approximately 63 µmoles/(hr*g tissue). Activity in other tissues was significantly greater than zero except for muscle. Muscle, liver, and intestine contributed about 70%, 15% and 6.5% respectively of …

A Hydrodynamic Model Of Semiconductors., Sixin Qian Jan 2000

A Hydrodynamic Model Of Semiconductors., Sixin Qian

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

We study the three dimensional simplified hydrodynamic model of semi-conductors where the equations of energy conservation are eliminated by assuming a pressure-density relation. The system is a combination of three hyperbolic equations coupled with an elliptic one. We prove the linear stability and the existence of local classical solutions to the initial boundary value problem for this system. The Neumann condition corresponds to an insulated boundary. Because a compatible condition is required in solving the Neumann BVP (Boundary Value Problem), a special iteration scheme is introduced to handle this situation. Based on the existence of the classical solutions to this …

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Childhood Sexual Abuse, Dissociation, And Eating Disorders., Patricia Marie Bailey Jan 2000

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Childhood Sexual Abuse, Dissociation, And Eating Disorders., Patricia Marie Bailey

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Researchers have documented a high percentage of eating disordered individuals with a history of traumatic experiences such as childhood sexual abuse (Abramson & Lucido, 1991; Oppenheimer, Howells, Palmer, & Chaloner, 1985; Tice, Hall, Beresford, Quinones, & Hall, 1989). To what extent these adverse life events may contribute to the onset, maintenance, and severity of maladaptive eating behaviors is widely debated among researchers and clinicians. The present study attempted to identify a spectrum of potentially traumatic life experiences in eating disordered individuals and their relationship with dissociation and eating pathology. Thirty-four female subjects meeting DSM-IV criteria for Bulimia Nervosa (n = …

A Qualitative Analysis Of The Socialization Factors Experienced By Induction Phase Physical Education Teachers From One University., Derek Jason Mohr Jan 2000

A Qualitative Analysis Of The Socialization Factors Experienced By Induction Phase Physical Education Teachers From One University., Derek Jason Mohr

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A topic of considerable interest in the educational research community is the process of learning to teach and the role that socialization plays in that process. Numerous educational researchers have focused their attention on examining these processes (e.g., Doyle, 1985; Graham, French, & Woods, 1993; Lawson, 1988; Schempp & Graber, 1992). Recent investigative approaches have attempted to broaden the perspective for viewing and interpreting teacher development, and socialization factors in addition to field experiences and student teaching have been examined (Graham, Hohn, Werner, & Woods, 1993; Widden, Mayer-Smith, & Moon, 1998; Woods & Earls, 1995). The purpose of this study …

Where The Stranger Bides: Resisting America With The Autobiographical Word., Lisa N. Muir Jan 2000

Where The Stranger Bides: Resisting America With The Autobiographical Word., Lisa N. Muir

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The recent republication of the works of Anzia Yezierska and Rose Cohen, as well as the first ever publications of the autobiographies of Bella Spewack and Rachel Cohen, demonstrate the current interest in the autobiographical experiences of turn-of-the-century female immigrant writers. These women were not politicos of the Progressive Era, nor were they literary revolutionaries in the stricter sense of writing against a patriarchal literary environment. Instead, these women pay particular attention to how ethnicity was constructed for them by cultural attitudes existing outside the text. Their autobiographical works confirm for the diverse readers of today that ethnicity is not …

Paradoxical Interventions With Severe Conduct-Disordered Adolescents: Research Of Treatment Effectiveness., Marsha Anne Mills Jan 2000

Paradoxical Interventions With Severe Conduct-Disordered Adolescents: Research Of Treatment Effectiveness., Marsha Anne Mills

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Paradoxical interventions are therapeutic techniques in which the therapist appears to promote the worsening or continuation of the problem rather than its removal. The objective of this treatment is to lessen or eliminate the problematic behavior through the unusual means of encouraging it. Only two previous studies have empirically evaluated these techniques with resistant and defiant youths; those results suggested that paradoxical interventions may be effective with severely conduct-disordered adolescents. This study applied the techniques of symptom scheduling and restraining with three conduct-disordered adolescents residing in a therapeutic group home. The experimental design was a nonconcurrent multiple baseline across participants; …

Dynamic Behavior Characterization Of Fine Powders Consisting Of A Homogeneous Emulsion, And, Synthesis And Decomposition Of Methane Gas Hydrate: A Reaction Engineering Study., Sridhar Narasimhan Jan 2000

Dynamic Behavior Characterization Of Fine Powders Consisting Of A Homogeneous Emulsion, And, Synthesis And Decomposition Of Methane Gas Hydrate: A Reaction Engineering Study., Sridhar Narasimhan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This work quantitatively characterizes the flow and mixing properties of aerated bulk fine powders between the minimum fluidization and minimum bubbling velocities (Umf < U < Umb). In order to accomplish this characterization, the viscosity of the emulsion phase was measured using the Maxwell’s model for the rheological behavior of complex bodies along with the set of rheological parameters proposed by Kono et al (1994). A unique property of the bulk fine powder called the relaxation time (t) was measured experimentally and this property was combined with another rheological parameter called the plastic deformation coefficient (Y) to give the viscosity of the emulsion phase as m = Yt. SECTION II This work describes the first homogeneous formation and decomposition of methane gas hydrates within several different synthetic sediments by using a highpressure batch reaction system. The pressure of the formation reaction was varied in the range of 6.8 – 13.6 MPa while the temperature was maintained constant at 273.5 K Decomposition of hydrate was accomplished through controlled depressurization starting at a pressure of 2.7 MPa, maintaining the temperature constant at 273.5 K. Overall reaction order, both for the formation and decomposition were also determined.

The Effects Of Supported Employment Level On The Psychosocial Experiences Of Integrated Workers With Mental Retardation., Jennifer L. Schwartz-Mitchell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Supported employment approaches may have a significant impact on the Psychosocial experiences of workers with mild and moderate mental retardation. The present study examined the influence of supported employment level (i.e., individual vs. group) on the depression, loneliness, and lifestyle satisfaction of employees participating in a vocational rehabilitation program. It was hypothesized that supported employment level differences would be reflected in the dependent variables of depression, loneliness, and lifestyle satisfaction reported by participants (N = 54). Additional predictions were made about relationships between these dependent variables and measures of social support and social skills. Supported employment level differences on depression, …

The Development And Validation Of Science Learning Inventory (Sli): A Conceptual Change Framework., Mehdi Seyedmonir Jan 2000

The Development And Validation Of Science Learning Inventory (Sli): A Conceptual Change Framework., Mehdi Seyedmonir

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A multidimensional theoretical model, Conceptual Change Science Learning (CCSL), was developed based on Standard Model of Conceptual Change and Cognitive Reconstruction of Knowledge Model. The model addresses three main components of science learning, namely the learner's conceptual ecology, the message along with its social context, and the cognitive engagement. A learner's conceptual ecology is organized around three clusters, including epistemological beliefs, existing conceptions, and motivation. Learner's cognitive engagement is represented by a continuum from peripheral processing involving shallow cognitive engagement to central processing involving deep cognitive engagement. Through reciprocal, non-sequential interactions of such constructs, the learners' conceptual change is achieved. …

Skeletal Muscle Injury, Fibrosis And Transforming Growth Factor-Beta., Cheryl A. Smith Jan 2000

Skeletal Muscle Injury, Fibrosis And Transforming Growth Factor-Beta., Cheryl A. Smith

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Several animal models were assessed for their ability to produce pathology with a potential for developing fibrosis. Pathology was determined using standard histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques. In a model of ethanol-induced myopathy, cytochrome p450 1A1/2 was induced in endothelial cells (i.e. capillaries) but there was insufficient pathology to produce fibrosis. Two models of overload, tenotomy of the gastrocnemius muscle and a tetanus toxin overload model showed morphological changes including: degenerating fibers, central nuclei, variable myofiber sizes, and an expansion of the extracellular matrix, but changes were non-uniformly distributed making this a poor fibrosis model. A tetanus-toxin model of repetitive strain …

Secession, War And Rebirth: The Civil War In West Virginia's South Branch Valley Of The Potomac., Stephen Garth Smith Jan 2000

Secession, War And Rebirth: The Civil War In West Virginia's South Branch Valley Of The Potomac., Stephen Garth Smith

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

West Virginia's South Branch Valley of the Potomac River played a crucial, but little studied, role in the American Civil War. Writing of the August 7, 1864, Battle of Moorefield, historian Robert K. Krick has noted that it “has received far less attention than it deserves.” In this work, it will be demonstrated that not only the August 7, 1864, Battle of Moorefield, but the conflict in the region in general is deserving of in-depth study. The geographic location and the plantation culture of the South Branch Valley favored its political and economic connection to Confederate eastern Virginia. Nevertheless, with …

The Numerical Simulation Of The Flow Of An Injected Grout In Underground Room And Pillar Coal Mines., James Mark Stiles Jan 2000

The Numerical Simulation Of The Flow Of An Injected Grout In Underground Room And Pillar Coal Mines., James Mark Stiles

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research was conducted to develop a computer program, Groutnet , to simulate the flow of a grout injected in a room and pillar coal mine. Previous rheological investigations have demonstrated that grouts composed largely of coal ash and water are Bingham fluids. Because the simulation of a large scale grout injection operation by solving the three dimensional equations of motion would be prohibitively expensive, the equations of motion were integrated in the vertical direction, and the unsteady and convective acceleration terms in the momentum equations were neglected. In order to achieve a closed set of equations, a uniform flow …

Part 1. Structure, Stability And Reactivity Of Small Organic Sulfinic And Sulfonic Acids: Toxicological Implications. Part 2. Role Of Charge Transfer Complexes In Oxidative Cleavage Of Benzpinacols By Iron(Iii) Trisphenanthroline., Serge Alex Svarovsky Jan 2000

Part 1. Structure, Stability And Reactivity Of Small Organic Sulfinic And Sulfonic Acids: Toxicological Implications. Part 2. Role Of Charge Transfer Complexes In Oxidative Cleavage Of Benzpinacols By Iron(Iii) Trisphenanthroline., Serge Alex Svarovsky

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Part 1. Structure, stability, and mechanisms of oxidation and hydrolysis of a number of thiourea-S-oxides (thiourea dioxide; N-methylthiourea dioxide; N,N′-dimethylthiourea dioxide; thiourea and N,N′-dimethylthiourea trioxides; and sodium hydroxymethanesulfinate) have been investigated by means of UV-VIS, stopped-flow; X-ray crystallography; molecular calculations; ESR; NMR; and oxygen consumption studies. It was found that oxidation of thioureas does not always proceed through the generally accepted successive addition of oxygen atom to the sulfur center. Instead, thiourea dioxides appear to be the major end product in these oxidations. Mechanism of hydrolysis of thiourea dioxides in basic media reveals complex chemical kinetics which involves initial heterolytic …
